Title: Madagascar vs. The Blues
Post by: JustWckd on November 22, 2002, 12:26:59 PM
This is my first thread and yes i know that this question has been asked before but the discussion was always a hot one...personally i love madagascar and that is probably one of my favorite GNR songs of ALL time...the Blues is great..especially the Rio version but Madagascar just has that magic that Axl can create..if u know what im saying....

Madagascar and The Blues have that special vibe that got me into GNR in the first place. The songs are more than just simple rock songs. Especially Madagascar, I never heard anything that compared. That was some feeling with November Rain and Estrange. I guess only Axl can make such awesome songs.

Madagascar is better to release but the Blues is a Masterpiece.

That's very hard coz I think that both of them are masterpieces. But if I had to choose I'd probably pick Madagascar but only very very closely.

Id say The Blues - Its got more of a hard rock/bluesy classic Gn'R sound to it.

Both are awesome, and I mean that.

But I'd choose The Blues for personal reasons (lyrics).  :)

I just can repeat my saying: Madagascar is my hymn. The best song I heard in years. I fell in love with it when I heard it for the first time in January 2001. Simply amazing. And I can't wait to hear more new songs aka Big Guns ... well, Madagascar is one of the biggest guns ever, IMO.

Marginally better than estranged? I'm not trying to dog Madagascar, but Estranged blows it away, IMO. By the way, I also prefer The Blues to Madagascar, partially because I own the Rio bootleg and I think that The Blues sounds alot better than Madagsacar on that record. The other reason I prefer it is because of the beautiful piano work.

Gotta go with Madagascar.  My only complaint is the audio clips during the solo.  It does add to the song (esp. MLK's "Free at Last..." lines at the end), but it drowns out what could be an incredible solo.

Post by: RyanMFGs on November 25, 2002, 11:23:03 PM
They did both VERY well at Cleveland last night...

Axl started singing the blues in his old scratchy Axl voice, and it sounded really awesome. He should experiment with that.. I forget what new song he was singing but he was doing it a little differently, think it was Blues, and I liked it. I like the Osaka version, too.

anyways, the question. heh, I love em both. I think Madagascar is gonna be amazing in studio, but I like The Blues better live, I think.

Also, Chinese Democracy sounded REALLY cool last night. Axl's voice was great. Damn, the more I talk about this show the more I realize I need to go to another one.

I disagree on that. I mean, Madagascar (and also The Blues) are great songs and definitely prove to me that this GN'R knows how to fuckin' play, but better than Estranged and November Rain... So, I don't wanna talk bad about Madagascar coz I really love that song and it's probably at the moment my favourite song from the new Guns, but I have to agree with UziSuicide, Estranged blows it away...still. [yes]

Agreed..."Madagascar" however has gotten better since the lifeless Rio version.

"The Blues" is easily my favorite new GNR song.

As you might have noticed I love these "The Blues" threads.

1. The Blues - Quick
2. Madagascar
3. The Blues - Ballad

Actually, The Blues is one of my favorite GNR songs ever! Can?t wait for a studio quick version (I hope it exists and gets released somehow).

The Blues is by far the best. The audio clips in Madgascar really annoy me after a while as they seem to go on forever and you can't hear the solo.

I would have to go with Madagascar.

The lyrics are beautiful ('bless them that they may grow old')

I like how his voice sounds in it.

It shows how Axl has been experimenting with music (in a non-industrial-sounding way), and I'm impressed with the results.  : ok:

Technically (lyrically, musically, etc.), 'The Blues' is the best song I've ever heard. But emotionally, 'Madagascar' is something of a higher-being of some sort. At some point, in my life, it crossed the line from being a "song" to an "experience". That may sound sappy, but that song has meant more to me than anything I've ever heard. It's so emotionally gripping.

I think he studio version will be unbelievable (esp. from the little cut we heard on the boston promo with the old school Axl voice) -  I have no doubt it will be on the album ('soon')

I love both songs.  It's hard for me to choose between the two.
As for album version vs. live performance versions, for me I was heavily biased as I listened to the early Blues and Madagascar performances a lot.  The RIR Blues and Boston '02 Blues/Madagascars were incredible...along with one portion of a Madagascar live performance from somewhere in Eastern Europe in which Axl put this awesome added vocal in towards the end that was just fucking perfect.
Final album versions, I love 'em both.  It's a tie for me.
I will say, I really thought both tunes suited Axl's performing voice from '02 very well.  Not every old AFD tune was suited for that voice, but these 2 songs sure were in my opinion.

I love all of the CD final studio versions, but in saying that I especially wish that these two songs were closer to their 2002 versions. I think Axl's high voice suited these ballad songs much better, and I've also noticed that they've took a lot of synth out of Street Of Dreams which rocked. I still love those songs with all my heart, I just preferred the earlier additions and vocal style.  :peace:

Tough to put TIL in the comparison though because it wasn't performed live prior to the release of CD.
Maddy and "The Blues" were staples for years prior to the final version being released.
(That said, I freaking LOVE This I Love, both studio and live...probably live more.  There are some epic live performances of the song out there)

It's obvious that both songs were tinkered with a lot during their gestation. We may never know if the studio versions from the early 2000's were better or worse than the versions that appeared on CD.

What I do know is that, even after having first heard Muddy nearly 13 years ago, the voice collage makes the hairs on the ask of my neck stand up every time!  8)
