Title: Shadow Of Your Love - reactions
Post by: Spirit on May 04, 2018, 07:20:09 PM
Reactions from the press (Most articles focuses on detailing the box set, but some took the time to say some words about the single).

Because holy shit, ?Shadow Of Your Love? rips. The band is using a remastered, no-crowd-noise version of the song to serve as the single from the box set, and it?s a total blitzkrieg, fast and nasty and powerful. It shows just how much punk rock was in the band?s early DNA, and it shows a group of musicians truly locked-in and Axl Rose?s out-of-control howl in peak form. It sounds dangerous.

https://www.stereogum.com/1994653/guns-n-roses-shadow-of-your-love/music/

The song features on their massive new Locked N? Loaded box set, and is taken from the band?s recording sessions by Appetite producer Mike Clink from December 1986 ? one month before the actual album sessions themselves. Badass.

Guns N? Roses have unleashed an absolute juggernaut of an unreleased recording: a studio version of ?Shadow Of Your Love?, taken from a long-lost December 1986 recording session with Appetite For Destruction producer Mike Clink.

Dating back to the days of Hollywood Rose ? the 80s LA group that, at one point, included four out of five future GN?R members, Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler ? the song, captured while the band honed the material that would feature on their legendary debut album, Appetite For Destruction, rips along at a breakneck pace. Axl Rose?s unmistakably wall-crumbling vocals and the band?s utterly unfettered performance encapsulates everything that made GN?R such a magnetic force in the mid-80s.

To give fans a taste of what will be included, the band has shared the previously unreleased song "Shadow Of Your Love."  The song is as wild and furious as the Sunset Strip was back in those days, combining punk and metal. Fast paced guitar, adrenaline-fueled drums, and Axl Rose's spirited vocals are on full display. Listening to the song that will make you wonder why it didn't make the final cut for the album.

Triple M debuted a brand new Guns N Roses track from the upcoming deluxe re-release of Appetite For Destruction today, and it?s an absolute cracker.

Shadow Of Your Love is a searing piece of quintessential gunners, harking back to the menace, pace and brashness of the original album in 1987.

Check out how the Triple M crew reacted to the new track here:

"Holy balls to the wall... I?ve just stepped back to 1987. What a cracking tune? Nightrain meets Welcome to the Jungle. Happy Friday indeed!"
- ?Dangerous? Dave Williams

"New @gunsnroses - bigger, louder and more offensive than I ever imagined"
- Becko

"@gunsnroses track ?Shadow Of Your Love? is so good I just played it on Triple M TWICE"
- Ugly Phil

"How good! Vintage Appetite-era Gunners with Shadow of Your Love..."
- Ewan Giles

The song is holding up very well in mainstream radio and media and amongst casual hard rock fans.
85 - 90% of Youtube comments are ecstatic. Local radio DJs are praising the song. Gnr is giving the masses, casual fans, and mainstream rock fans exactly what they want and expected out of a "new" GNR tune. From a business and PR stance, this makes sense. The band was smart enough to release "SOYL" because it would be "impossible" to say that it "didn't sound like Gnr."

I also think their decision to release SOYL as their "first single" is a very symbolic move. It speaks to both the causal rock fan on one level and to the hardcore fan on another. To the casual fan-- it says "we're back!" GNR takes one of their best yet most obscure old songs and polishes it up. To the masses it would sound fresh and new and leave no room for debate about whether or not it "holds up" to the classic GNR sound and canon.

To the hardcore fan- SOYL is a very symbolic statement- They are going "back to the start" where it all began. We know that this is the first song they ever played together and it goes straight to the bedrock of GNR.

This is definitely a statement that "more is to come." They are starting at the beginning. They are "making up for lost years (94 - 2000) and reclaiming their legacy. They are exposing their catalogue to show that they do indeed have an expansive catalogue that can hold up to the other aspects of their legacy. Their limited catalogue is usually the only criticism against GNR.

In some ways this was a smart move--- this is exactly the kind of song mainstream rock radio and the causal rock fan needed from GNR. It guaranteed the classic GNR sound so that there would be "no debate" about whether or not it did or didn't "sound" like GNR. They came charging out of the gate, sounding like 1987 GNR, leaving them satisfied.

One thing is clear-- GNR are making very strategic moves. They are honing in on "the big picture" of their ultimate legacy now. They have a masterplan and are on a mission. Releasing SOYL as their "comeback single" wasn't some last minute, spontaneous move. They are making a statement.

SOYL is clearly an Appetite caliber song. Compared to the rest of GNR's catalogue it might seem"average," or "generic," but it's not. Compared to 95% of current rock songs, it's big, fast, and loud and easily lives up to the classic GNR groove and swing. Hearing it on the radio instead of an iPhone or computer in your basement makes you immediately realize how bad ass the song is.

I have to be honest though: that Slash solo sounds "way too now"....its vibe reminded me of the Contraband stuff. Not sure if Slash was already able to play like this in 86....

Funniest reactions are from people who think its a new song.  ;D
They are lucky in a way.

Me too. I already thought of it when I heard the riff he plays in the intro. It's killer tho.

I think he meant style and not skill. His style has changed or grown a bit with time.

That's what I meant indeed. I know he had the chops back then, but the way he plays now is on a whole other level and this solo sounds way more "current" Slash. Meaning speed, flow, playing style and the sound itself. Back then he was a lot more sloppy, and this solo sounds tight.

I think the word "able" belies that, but in any case, he played just that clean on AFD.

Also, the exact same version was already out in lesser quality:

Ah, so I was wrong. The sound itself seemed more modern but I guess it really is the re-mastering then.

It really is incredible how good the quality is for something from 1986. I definitely agree it sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday.

Not exact same version. There's one overdubbed Slash lead in the intro. Izzy and Slash's rhythm are different in some areas too. And the solo is not the same.

True. Although many of Izzy's parts are just lost in the mix of the old one. They are nearly the same though, so I think it's more likely just different takes from the same session or something. Isn't it supposed to be from the Clink Session? I can't imagine they would re-record parts and try to pass it off as the original recording though, when they could just include both the original and a re-recorded version if they really wanted to.

Guns N' Roses Make First Mainstream Rock Songs Chart Appearance Since 2009

5/11/2018 by Kevin Rutherford

Plus, Skindred scales the chart for the first time since 2005.

One veteran of Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart makes a grand return after nine years, while another act makes its first visit in 13 years.

Guns N' Roses debut at No. 31 on Mainstream Rock Songs (dated May 12) with "Shadow of Your Love," released May 4 to promote the upcoming reissue of the band's debut studio album, 1987's Appetite for Destruction. The song, written by frontman Axl Rose and childhood friend Paul Tobias before Guns N' Roses even came to be, earned 1.1 million audience impressions in three days of airplay across all rock radio formats in the U.S. in the week ending May 7, according to Nielsen Music.

"Shadow" is GN'R's first track to crack Mainstream Rock Songs in nearly a decade and its 22nd entry overall. The group, which boasts eight top 10s, had last charted with "Better," which hit No. 18 in January 2009.

"Shadow" is the band's first radio single featuring its original lineup of Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler since "Patience," which peaked at No. 7 in March 1989. It's the first with Slash, Stradlin and McKagan since "Sympathy for the Devil" (No. 10, 1994).

The reissue of Appetite is due June 29 and features 73 songs among four discs, plus a "Locked N' Loaded" edition that also includes the release on vinyl and digital formats, among other perks.

If you look at the album on iTunes, the version that was released as a single is listed as Shadow Of Your Love. There's another one that's listed as Shadow Of Your Love (1986 Sound City Session), which is still unavailable to listen to since it's not out yet.

I guess people get confused because this version was previously unreleased, it sounds great and the title doesn't specify that it's from a specific era (Mike Clink session in 1986)....

Why? People are talking about Slash rerecording some lead guitars. Some otheres are talking about Axl and Duff adding overdubs. Nothing in this article suggests anything different.

The more I listen to this song, the better it gets. It grows. And grows. And grows. The song was instantly good, but then it keeps growing. Usually "growers" don't impress at first listen. They seem "meh" at first listen and then grow. However, SOYL seemed pretty damn awesome at first listen, but with each listen it seems to get better and better. It went from "pretty damn great" to a "hard rock masterpiece"?? The more I hear the opening riff and drums and those harmonies during the chorus, it's just starting to sound and feel like a masterpiece and instant classic. This could easily become a "radio staple" of mainstream active rock radio.
I think this tune has some legs and is going to stick around awhile; could make top 5. In fact, the more I hear it on the radio, the song has all of the "traits" that made GNR great:
1. Hard and heavy, yet groove
2. lose, yet tight
3. catchy, melodic even with a strong "pop sensibility": GNR's gift was that they essentially made really hard and rocking "pop songs" They had big, larger than life swooping choruses and catchy melodies while never losing their "edge"
4. Axl's raspy "classic" vocals

However, we can't forget that it was GNR's balladry and soft side that was their real claim to fame and bread and butter. Historically speaking, GNR never did as well commercially with their harder material. It was their softer stuff that performed best on the charts- SCOM, NR, DC, Patience,

Finally got around to listening to this new version. As far as my ears are concerned this is a new recording. Axls vocals are definitely not mid-80s. They?re excellent but more reminiscent of what he showed on the NITL and AC/DC tours. The recording and mixing sound completely new. Guitar sounds like mature Slash. The guy who counts out the start of the song is not Steven, although I suppose it could be Rob Gardner or one of those early drummers. But I?ve listened to the b-side version and several live versions and this really doesn?t sound like any of them. Pretty cool, I think this is the first new studio recording since CD.

I have no knowledge, but the song sounds like its from 1986. No overdubs done after 1987 atleast.

Thats my take on it.

yeah, mine too. a mix of differents takes from 86 and a good remastering.

well, of course it sounds good, it's from GNR golden era.

on the other side, I'm not sure what it says about the current status and projetcs of the current band. if any.

Weird that no one has said anything about this track, Fernando ? Anyone?

Btw the guy talking at the beginning sounds like Duff.

I played it on repeat for over an hour the day it was released, still not tired of it, listening to it every day.

Do you think they have other unreleased recordings that sound as good as this?  If so, I sure hope it sees the light of day.

Remember this version is from another session than the other versions released of the song. And just that day Axl sounded like this. He still sound different from one day to another.

/jarmo

Ok, but I am still confused (apologies for my ignorance).  So does the version of SOYL that was released contain any "new" recordings (vocals, guitars, etc.) or is it all from the 80's?  It sounds like it's all from the 80's.

Really like the song, btw.  Just heard it (again) on Octane on Sirius.  Glad it's getting some airplay.  Would be cool to hear them play it live on their upcoming tour.

That's the debate. Some think it's been touched up.

To me it sounds like it's from 1986 as well, just a different version than what we've heard before.

Just listened to a new interview with Adler, and thought I'd transcribe this. He seems fairly certain it ISN'T him drumming in the recording, which is interesting.

"I've heard a version of it and I'm telling you, that's not me. That's not me. I don't know what they did.....I don't know what the heck they did with it. I heard the drums and I was going 'that's definitely not me'. I know how I play and sound and it's not me.....I don't know who the hell it is."

Im telling you guys, there?s nothing in that recording that sounds 32 years old. Honestly I pretty much memorized the LALD b-side version. I?ve listened to it hundreds of times since it in whatever, 1997 or so. I?ve heard some live versions. This one is different. Axls voice sounds great but it?s not how he sang in 86. His phrasing on this version is more controlled. Some of the vocal effects are slightly forced. The tempo is a bit slower, the playing is more precise. And I don?t think that?s Duff counting into the song, he?s got a slight lisp. Plus the drummer usually counts in.

There are no new parts in the song... All tracks comes from the 80s.. Slash's solo is CLEARLY old (i can hear licks he dosn't use anymore) and Axl's voice  is far from what it is now, the texture is very different. Probably they have just put togheter the better parts of the different takes they already had,  but that's it. It all sounds "fresh" because they haven't used (or they have removed) all the stuff they would have used in the 80's, like heavy reverb or not putting the lead voice in the foregorund like it is now.

Yeah.

They recorded the song with Mike Clink, but since it was never released, maybe it wasn't properly mixed and/or mastered until now.

Maybe that's why it sounds so amazing? Compared to if it had been released in the 1980s, it might have a different sound....

I lean more towards it being a cleaned up old track, but the first few times I heard it I was convinced it wasn't Adler drumming - and now he doesn't think so either, I'm not sure what I think!

I would find it strange that they would bother re-recording bits of this track really, as there seems to be no point in that, if it existed in decent quality already.

There are undoubtedly things they can do to tracks now to make them sound 'new', so perhaps it's just been altered quite significantly in the studio, without actual re-recording of parts?

Most footage I've seen of bands in general are counted in by the drummer, which makes sense as the timekeeper for the song. But yeah, Duff has counted in on those songs you mention. I agree and that's a good point. And we have his "to the bar" thing at the end of You Aint the First. So I could easily be wrong about all of this, and especially that part, but I still think the guy doesn't sound like Duff to me, even if it actually is Duff. Maybe he's using a deeper voice or something. In terms of the vocals, I'm thinking about how amazingly good Axl sounded in NITL shows for certain parts of songs, for example the shrieking chorus in latter third of ISO. And even more than NITL, he was knocking it out of the park in the early AC/DC shows, sounding so much like his mid-80s voice. I honestly couldn't believe my ears. But even with the force and tone he was displaying then, he sounded much more in control than what I've heard from the mid-80s. And some of the effects, like his growling vibrato, had a different feel than way back when. And that's what I'm detecting in this new recording. I mean, maybe it's an old recording. Maybe they brought Clink back for a new recording. In any case the band shows no sign of revealing much about it, so we're left to speculate. All in all, a great treat for longtime fans of that magical period from about 86-88.

Bottom line, for me.

I think it sounds awesome.  Even if not 100% organic, it sounds like "classic Guns N' Roses", the band I became a diehard fan of.

And even if it's touched up...who cares, if it sounds good.  When the Stones released their deluxe version of 'Exile On Main Street', those are new vocals from Mick on the supposed old tracks.  He just sung them in the style he used from that era, best he could.  And they sound great.

Not sure if anyone is debating the song itself when talking about the supposed re-recording. It's just fun to discuss.

My first reaction when I heard the snippet of the song in the AFD unboxing video was: that lead guitar sounds too fresh. Not just Slash's playing style, but his tone too. When I heard the full track, had the same feeling throughout the whole song.

I guess they could re-amp the master track much like Axl and Caram did in Chinese Democracy. But then again, the original recording wasn't made like that, he recorded straight to the tape with all the effects back then. They could add a reverb or delay in the mix, but it wouldn't make the guitar sounding that different IMO.

Not sure about the drums and vocals. But all I'm saying is that this is the original 1986 recording with *SOME* recent overdubs. Maybe the original mix wasn't polished enough to release as it was and they wanted to add some extra stuff?

I think its probably not a new recording of the vocals. If it was, why keep quiet about it? Better not to say anything and let fans wonder and give the impression that its all new.

Still though.. those vocals sound ODDLY ODD  ;D Like maybe its not from 1986, but maybe he tried rerecording in 1991 for the Illusions...?

To be honest, I hope that they are new vocals.  Totally new vocals.

It would mean he could still sound like that, albeit in the context of a controlled studio setting and some soundboard magic.

Which...is pretty much how I viewed his work on 'Angel Down'.  That sounds like classic Axl.  Even if he wasn't able to pull that off even 2 years later, live.

Angel Down...and here I thought I was the only one who bought that album.  I was surprised that Back in the Saddle didn't get more airplay.  It seems that everyone else who did a cover (which is a lot of bands) got way more publicity.

Anyway, SOYL is great, regardless of when the vocals and parts were recorded.  I got to think if it was done recently, we would've been told that because it makes GnR that much more relevant.  Really hope they play it live this summer.

Yeah.

Exactly this.

Hard Rock masterpiece?

Sorry, but it was a leftover they didn't even want to put on UYI like Back off Bitch, which was barely good enough to make the cut. The whole chorus is just chugging one chord. I will say, I've come to appreciate it more than I had thanks to this excellent recording, but let's not fool ourselves.

Maybe you've forgotten how Axl's vocals were actually cleaner in the early days. This very much fits his sound in that time.

I would say it only matters outside of message boards.  On the youtube comments on the first day I saw a lot of people thinking it was a new song and were all excited.
Then the deeper level fans started to comment saying its actually an old song...

and then there's the deeper deep level fans discussing on HTGTH messageboards whether its a remastered demo, a remastered demo with new parts or a whole new recording of an old song  :hihi:

I definitely haven't forgotten. I'm talking about very detailed subtleties that I hear when I listen to the new release on headphones. I have the same sense of these vocals as I did when Live Era came out, and new vocals were obviously dubbed into certain parts of WTTJ (the single from that release) and a couple other tracks. This is not a 'line in the sand' by me... basically I just really like the track. But there's just something really really interesting about the vocals. Maybe it's the modern mastering technology revealing stuff we couldn't hear back then, or maybe my ears are really hearing what I think I'm hearing. To me, either is fine.

Live Era was clearly put together from different parts, very little effort was spent to try and mask that.
This SOYL if different case. Personally I hear the vocals are original but to me the middle and solo guitars are fresh.
Sounds resembles Slash?s later sound and style.
That doesn?t bother me at all. On the contrary, I think it?s really cool he?s been listening the old recordings and decided to re-record wanting it sound best possible.
Axl?s part is perfect, there is no reason he would have wanted to redo those.

This is cool song, I want to hear this live at summer. Other wish from me: please do Jumpin? Jack Flash, maybe replace some other cover with that one!

However, I do think it's possible, even likely, that it's an amalgamation of different takes or even different sessions in order to create the ultimate version of the song, and that's why it doesn't have any particular session attached to it.

Disappointed it wasn’t played but maybe was for the best. Axl’s voice generally improves after a few shows and will probably to that song justice when he’s on form. Slither was great addition to the setlist though

The version released off of the Live and Let Die single you could listen to backwards and it said Oh Antichrist over and over in the chorus.  Anyone know if this newer version does it?
