Axl has gotten better press in 2016 than he has since...well, since maybe ever.

Even at his UYI prime, he was seen a juvenile asshole.  You might have to go back to 1988 or so to see when he was last spoken about as favorably as he's been in 2016.

If Axl didn't have the ego maniac rock star persona from day 1... This site would not exist.

It is part of who he is ... Stop whining about the reputation he has .. There would be no GNR without everything that comes with Axl and what made him who he is.

I totally agree.

I also think you really have to work the persecution complex pretty hard this year.  It's just one good review after another, from all corners.

Agree

I have stopped being bothered about some media painting Axl as a "madman". As you say there are now overwhelmingly more positive reports from the media, more than ever I think. People have more access to the media, and I think the casual fans are seeing right through theses "negative" reports. Likely more than a million people will see GN'R live in the US this year, they will form their own opinions... it will be a positive one. Guaranteed.

The large majority of these reviews are hugely positive... I think most people need to get used to the fact that most of the writers and tv media members (especially the local ones we read after each of the individual nights) does not care about 01-14... for the most part they are either pretending it doesn't exist or really do not know the volume of shows played over that time frame... You are going to see a lot of 'first area show in 23 years' type headlines. Embrace the positivity unlike anything we've seen since the UYI era and be happy... there is always going to be a shot here or there about the CD tunes or CD era members. Bitching about it after each of the next 20 something shows isn't going to change it (definition of insanity and all)

I think when you're referring to "their reputation", you're thinking of the national cable channel "Fox News". The ones doing the reporting in the article is not the same channel. I don't know for sure, but I don't think these local channels have the same reputation.

Not important really, it was poor research anyways.

They've still been doing good crowds. Football stadiums hold upwards of 80,000 people. 80,000 people is a tough draw for any concert these days.

For end-stage concerts it's more like 50,000 though. Still big.

I know you guys are joking but KC takes its BBQ very seriously. Had Ron tried pimping that hot sauce around there(pretending for a sec he's in the lineup), he'd get booed when hitting the stage.

If a fan were to take a bottle of that hot sauce into a restaurant there you'd likely get thrown through the window.  :P

I do like how GNR are marketing things to specific regions and its not just generic merch through the whole country. They have put a lot of thought into this. Anyone saying this is a worthless "cash grab" or GNR doesn't care about the fans can eat shit.

I still find that strange because a lot of tickets were sold on the upper deck. There weren't nearly enough empty seats in the lower sections to accommodate for that.

I have a theory they want to pack the lower sections first, thus upgrading the first upper deck people coming to the stadium. When it's packed in the lower bowls and field, they open the upper deck.

Does anyone know what the ticket sales look like for this show?

Going by ticketmaster it should be pretty much sold out.

Looks like they closed the upper deck again(similar to DC). Will still be a great show I'm sure

If you are correct i hope that happens in Arlington. I would gladly take an upgrade from 434!

They just posted this on the GNR twitter.  They posted the same thing at the previous shows.  I'm guessing it's for a seating upgrade even better than where the upper deck people are being moved to??

If you're at @arrowheadevents tweet your seat, section & row with #GNRKansasCity! You never know...

Not bad at all. Of course i'd prefer every seat to sell out. However, if the upper deck being closed results in getting myself better seats i won't be complaining!

Really really hope they sell out all seats in Philly.  My seat is small section under the top upper deck in the back.  We picked the seats because we could be in the front row of that section with no one sitting in front of us.  If they put us in the back of the next section down I'll be sure to throw a hissy fit for at least 5-10 minutes!  ;D

Strange indeed.

Days ago there were clusters of seats available in all sections of the stadium, upper deck as well. But each bowl was at the least 85-90% sold, and with the amount of seats displayed as sold in the upper deck there weren't nearly enough empty seats in the lower bowls and field to accommodate for all those upper-deck people.

I'm not sure those Ticketmaster maps are accurate.

Ticketmaster has been doing a lot of resale tickets, just check their website. On top of that if you check StubHub or any other scalpers site you're gonna find plenty of tickets for all the shows.

I think that's a underestimated guesstimation.

Filled to the brim, for concert setup, the place holds roughly 57k (because Kenny Chesney set the record for a concert there at 57,300-ish).

If you close the uppers, you lose about 15k, maybe slightly less, in that stadium.  That drops you to 42k ish.   For attendance to "only" be 25k, the place would have had to have looked half empty.  Did it look half empty to anyone last night?

I'm guessing attendance was more like 35k+ and the writer was just taking a stab.

Firstly, judging by the photos, it looks like you're losing more than 15,000.  Secondly, it wasn't just the uppers that were closed.  That entire back section behind the stage was also closed, top to bottom.  Flip back a few pages, those photos DO make the place look half-empty if you really look.  During the show photo, the empty sections are not lit at all, so it's easy to miss how many sections are really closed.  Based on the photos, I can believe that only 25,000 fans were there.  But that's still a lot.  I personally never expected every single show to produce 40,000 fans.  I think it's going to fluctuate more than people think.

Yeah, but it wasn't just the uppers that were closed.  That entire back section behind the stage was also closed, top to bottom.  Flip back a few pages, those photos DO make the place look half-empty.  The empty sections are not lit at all, so it's easy to miss how many sections are really closed.  Based on the photos, I can believe that only 25,000 fans were there.  But that's still a lot.

The upper deck is roughly 20k capacity for football. Thats not a guess, its whats listed. You lose about 1/4 of those seats "behind the stage". Thats about 15k. 57-15=42.

Closing the seats behind the stage is normal for a concert setup. Was the same for Chesney's show. Most stadium shows in the states do this, thus why capacity is 57k and not 74k (which is what it is for football games).

Again, if it were 25k, about half the open and available seats would have to be empty. Did it look that way to you? Did you see roughly 17k open seats, not including upoer deck and behind stage? I don't think i do....

I think sub 30,000 in a major city is disappointing.

It would likely still be a money maker for everyone involved.

And for a mid western town, on a wednesday night, in late june?  Not too shabby, imho, even if it were 28k or so (and i don't think it is).  Its still WAY too big a show to do in an arena.

On a Wednesday night? No, it's not a bad number. Keep in mind that doing stadiums isn't just to fill them but rather they need a place big enough for that type of set up and big enough to handle a crowd that an arena otherwise couldn't with that set up.

That said, check out @arrowheadevents on Twitter at some of the pics and it looks like there was probably more than 25k there.

I was there in person last night, and I'd say it was 25,000. There were scattered open seats by my friend and I all over our section C, and open seats in the stands. I wouldn't call it a disappointment though, GNR have played KC 3 times since Nov 2011. It was an awesome show and I'm thankful I went, and I drove 5 and a half hours to get there. Fans are just going to have to regret not going.

Also keep in mind that Kansas City is a relatively small market. The city proper may be "big city," but the 14 county MSA is just over 2 million. That's a small market. Detroit is a 5 million plus MSA and that's just 3 counties, not including all over lower Michigan which is within a 2-3 hour drive. In addition, KC is an isolated MSA. Remember, most arenas hold 10,000 to 20,000 people and a lot of big, classic bands do t always sell out every arena, especially smaller markets. Again, if this were an arena tour they would have quickly and easily sold out in every market !
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_metropolitan_area

Also- Pittsburg's MSA is simply too small and too close to Philly, Cincinnati
In addition, I think they could have eliminated one of those shows- central Indiana will go to Chicago, and most of the population in Pensylvania is clustered on the east side of the state neat Philly, so most Pennsylvania fans are going to Philly. If you head west of Pittsburg, those people would be drawn to Concinnatti or even Detroit. To top it off, if you go south east of Pittsburgh you're getting really close to Landover show. Many would simply go to the Washington DC/Landover concert. Simply put, too many stadium shows spread too thin in too many markets.
Take out the Pittsburg and KC shows, and all are selling well.

So you understand first hand. I lived in the Columbus area at one point, so understand a little. Pittsburg is unique. It's not really a gritty midwestern rust belt city, however, it's not really an old east coast city either. It has its own "feel" and vibe. Although, I do wonder about the Cleveland market. I think the planners were assuming that the Pittsburgh show would pull heavily from the Cleveland market, which is pretty big and a reasonable assumption. I wonder if they do some more marketing up in Cleveland at the rock stations there if they would push some more tickets. I would be curious as to your thoughts about Cleveland, D-GenerationX. Or, a lot of Cleveland fans identify more with the grittiness of Detroit and wanted to be at the "first show."??? IDK.

Ideally, the concert promoters would have had one big blow out in Cincinnati and scrapped Nashville and Pittsburgh. Then scrapped Kansas City and Glendale and just had a big blow out in Denver (Glendale is simply too close to San Diego and LA, too much competition). That would have been more strategic. Also, scrapping Nashville would have been better for the Atlanta market. Atlanta's MSA is pretty comparable to Detroit (5 million) and will pull from even further out.

I know Duff is the original and archetypal GNR bassist (Ole, sorry dude!) and I really like what he did in GNR, VR and during his solo career.
but I've also always loved Tommy in GNR and he always was the archetypal NewGNR bassist. can't say much about his solo stuff, I never was a Replacements fan and maybe only Motivation is a catchy tune.
hard to say. I'd love to see Tommy doing a guest appearance with GNR. Duff could have a guitar for the time.
both of these guys are just class acts.
do you remember those times?

Folks, it the weekend before the 4th, a Wednesday and in KC. I was there and it was great!! Lower and 2nd bowl were full (minus behind stage). People are whining about GNR pulling in 25k, with no new album, in 2016? Give me a break. Enjoy the tour, the boys are back, very fun times.

I'm still pretty convinced 25k is a little low on the estimate side.  Especially now that info is trickling in that Fed ex and Ford Field were 40/41k ish (Trunk, USA Today, and other reputable places). I'm still thinking we're somewhere more like the low to mid 30's.

Guess we'll just have to see if a more official report comes out.....

A little tribal knowledge to address your point about Glendale and SD/LA; having driven from CA to AZ several dozen times, I really can't see people driving that far to see a show. It's basically a 5 hour drive one way (not counting LA traffic if you choose that show) and unless you bought your Southwest ticket a month ago, flying is out. Both shows are on a Monday so that could cut both ways--I guess you could head out Sunday or Monday and drive back Tuesday perhaps? Airbnb to keep the price down? How many people would take one or two days off work to see a show I wonder. As to LA/SD fans, from San Diego to LA on a Monday it will take you again, literally 5 hours. No joke. Maybe more. Getting through downtown LA is a nightmare. There's a reason Axl sang "this traffic is hell" in Bad Apples. You'd have to take off early from work, say around 2p and tailgate or get dinner around the stadium to make it work and don't forget you'll be hanging around the parking lot afterwards for a while as it empties. All that and then you get to drive back to SD (luckily it will be 1a so no traffic--yay!)

In short, LA fans may have traveled to SD--there's less people and the train will drop you pretty close to Qualcomm and it's a short trolley ride from there, but SD fans will most likely not to attempt to get to LA. And interstate travel is probably not very likely either.

I understand that if pushed, many, many people would brave the traffic and again, burn a precious vacation day to see this act if it was one night only in one location. But I think they were very smart in choosing these three locations IMO. That being said, I do wonder if they can pack Dodger stadium two nights in a row. I sure hope so! :)

No way, man, the Georgia Dome is gonna be freaking packed. I'm hitting that show as well, coming in from out of town. This will be the first time the boys have played there since the late 80s as I recall (not counting the post-Slash incarnation of the band). Plus, Atlanta is a concert town! That's my two cents anyway.

The lower and middle decks seemed pretty packed to me. I think around 30,000 is a good guesstimate. It was a good crowd given the price of the tickets and that it was a Wednesday night. They would have gotten more casual fans if it was a weekend and the tickets were cheaper.

When GNR played KC in 2011, I'm pretty sure they closed off the upper deck of the Sprint Center. When they played the Midland in 2013 (3,600 seat capacity), they didn't sell out. I'm just happy they chose KC rather than skipping over it. Awesome show.
