Title: ayy yo! dontcha try and stop us now!
Post by: ice cream sand pig on April 30, 2016, 12:22:14 PM
ayy yo!

cuz i just refuse!

is gnr the biggest rock group in the world right now?

seems like it to me, with the reunion hype going around.

don't know much about what is going on in the rock scene nowadays, or if there is even such a thing...

but guns seems to be the biggest rock thing going on lately.

what do you think?

i haven't heard anything about them recently. but then again,  dont really know whats going on with music lately, besides gnr fan sites.

i bet gnr could take  'em with a new album though!

Probably RHCP and U2 are bigger.

Maybe U2. Definitely not RHCP. Doubt they could sell out a 5,000 seat auditorium.

Ac/dc, Metallica, bon jovi, and The Stones might be as big, in terms of ability to sell tickets.  But with the reunion, right this second, i dont think there is a BIGGER live rock (though i guess it depends on your def of rock) right now. Only "as big".

There might be "bigger" bands, but GNR are the "hottest" band RIGHT NOW. They are one of a few bands around the 100 million records sold status who are currently active.
The rock genre right now is very narrow. It is a niche genre centered around heavy, angry, stiff bands with no groove, blues, or sex appeal. For example, the biggest bands in "rock" right now are probably Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, and Shinedown. But they are very limited in scope. Rock isn't a universal genre anymore. It isn't the "music of the kids." It's for young, angry, angst ridden macho guys or pissed off "metal heads." GNR, when at the peak of their game, rock n roll was the music of a generation. GNR were had a universal cultural impact. They had sex appeal, groove, attitude, and were pop culture icons.

But, GNR's Soldier Field show is selling way better than Coldplay.

Guns N' Roses are probably the only currently-active rock band I listen to (mostly I listen to metal), so I'm a bit out of touch with the rock scene, and my suggestions were just guesses, really.

you always write such great posts!

incredible that they sold better than coldplay. i remember when i saw coldplay live during the viva la vida tour, chris said they were the biggest band in the world at that time.

Yeah, neither u2 or RHCP would sell out stadiums in US now.

RHCP was never a stadium act at any point.

U2 has been, and would be one now too.

You don't think U2 would?

Checked their 2015 tour, and they did 36 arena dates in 10 cities (including Canada), all sold-out. Including 8 nights in a row at Madison Square Garden, with a total of 150,000 tickets sold there.

I trully don't know, I should have make it clear. But if its the case, to me is really weird. I don't even see them as relevant now and their last album was really a snooze fest.

And 36 dates all sold-out? wow

They last did Stadiums in the US in 2011 and sold really well then too. I'm not sure why fans need to tear down another band to prove 'their' band is better... U2 is not my cup of tea, but it is hard to argue their success.

What? Im not tearing down U2 to make "my band" looking better. I was only stating my opinion. I dont live in US, I only visited a couple of times a year. I just didnt know because where I live, people do like U2, but it's hardly something "trending". I didnt say they were not good.

Edited to correct the Android keyboard fuckups.

^ it really is amazing. and just last year people were saying he was going to retire.

i was also surprised u2 is still so big. nothing against them, but just haven't heard anything about them in a while. wonder what's been keeping them so big for so long?

RHCP certainly played stadiums in Europe about ten years ago.

Sorry, that wasn't a shot at you... Your question of U2 was valid especially around the iTunes mixup and the severely lackluster sales of their last album... It just made me think about the need 'some fans' have of trying to argue that no band on earth belongs in the conversation with Guns N' Roses.

Probably should have clarified that it wasn't an inline response to you.
