I think that's the best Axl has sounded on TWAT ever.  It's not perfect, but it works for me.  Slash really did the solo justice too.

I can't stop watching the TWAT video. It's like the band never split up and Slash has been playing it forever. Really does sound like an evolution of classic gnr, like the next level of gnr. Slash and duff fit right into it. They fit right into that twat like they belong in there. These live performances will surely garner more popularity for cd material. Must be fun for Duff and Slash too, to change it up and play some stuff that's relatively new to them. Don't know that of course, but that'd be my guess.

That's the best TWAT performance yet...Slash is a amazing! Hope I get to witness this live.

Amazing TWAT performance. Axl's voice it's at an incredible level. Loved also Duff's backing vocals. Slash does a decent job in the track, much more considering it's his first time live, but this is one of the cases it should be Richard the one that performs the solo. Not Slash's style, and the virtuosism of that extended second solo is the heart of the song, and Slash cant provide that.

Im very happy the band is, little by little, playing ChiDem songs. The GNR fans that have spent years saying ChiDem was not GNR must be very confused after seeing Slash and Duff playing them very zealously and proudly :)

I think, besides routine rhytm guitar, he's there to play those wacky BH/BBF solos that obviously aren't Slash's cup of coffee at all. + "casual fans" would probably cause a shitstorm, if Richard played some classic rock-ish solos instead of Slash :)

Richard is very good, i like his guitar playing, but he's not BH or BF...just listen to his sloppines when he plays the very short solo on better before the "so bittersweet this tragedy" part: this happens when you want to play note for note something doesn't belong to your fingers, and that particular lick is an easy one for a virtuoso...That's why slash approach to the songs is better and his well known superior taste is more likeable.  : ok: ... Richard is not a virtuoso, maybe is a little faster than slash but is not that clean or accurate as a virtuoso should be  ;)

Very very good performance! Axl's vocals are very good, especially during the 2nd part of the song. Better than on the album, more raw. I also like Frank's drumming, he has a nice vibe.

On last night's setlist... if that was played in Nashville, I'd be happy sure. I mean I'll take whatever I guess, but I'd also be alittle bummed.

"Civil War" is probably my favorite Gn'R song, it is definitely in the top 5. "Coma" I've never heard live obviously and I like that song a good amount. TWAT is a good song, but I've never been a huge fan.

Never really cared for "Yesterdays". So far for me, this is the worst setlist they've done. It's still a really good setlist yes, but we all have our preferences and I'd be missing Civil War and Coma at the Nashville show over these.

I for one am not confused at all.  I think they like the challenge of playing something new, it probably keeps things fresh and interesting for them.  I also think Axl was/is pretty adamant about including non-original-GNR material.  Excluding that material would kinda be admitting defeat.  And of course, those songs are probably pretty important and personal to him.

However, TWAT can never be the best GNR song ever written, for all the obvious reasons !

Since this happened...that was the one song from CD I was looking forward to the most. I always thought Slash would take the song to new heights. So cool.

In a way it almost bums me out that they (Slash and Duff) missed out on CD and couldnt compromise on 12 songs at the time...but no point in looking back now! Hearing and seeing Slash crush those songs make me so excited about the prospects of him collaborating on unreleased songs like it's been rumored.

First off, that is cool. Love Slash's touch on the newer songs. Makes them better in my opinion, but liked them before too.

I bet Finck, Bucket and Fortus also think it is cool to see Slash playing their parts. I bet they are also thinking, lets see how Slash likes playing other people's parts:)) Funny how that all works out.

there is no "obectively" best song. just as there is no objectively best color or best flavor. if you want to go by what people think universally, isn't that the same as saying the most popular music is the best music? you can see what road that logic would take you down (a road i would only walk down with earplugs in). i think when it comes to things like art, there is not really such a thing as best. people just like what they like, and for all kinds of different reasons.

I couldn't agree more! I know people wanted to know how Slash would play those songs. Well now we all know he has been great. And Axl knows it now. He probably wonder about it as well all these years and he got an answer. Now it's time to play AFD and UYI songs we didn't hear often.

I think they've struck a nice balance.

Personally, I wouldn't play any.  I'm not dug in and ready to die on the hill over it.  But if there was not one CD song in the setlist, I would shrug.

But 3 songs is a nice balance.  3 songs of a 22-24 song setlist.

They added Don't Cry and Yesterdays as well... I don't see the problem with four CD songs.

Last night they played 4 of the 14 CD songs and 14 of the approximate 50 GNR songs off the rest of the GNR albums.

So they're doing about an equal percentage - about 3.5% of CD and 3.57% of the rest.

When you put Slash ( & Duff) on them and hear his take it really takes them to the next level. So for me 4 CD songs I have no problem with at all. Personally I like hearing GNR songs from this century mixed in with the classics.

Coma is a pretty deep cut...hardcores know it but I would imagine most of the people at these shows don't.

A bit less for TSI?, and even less for CD.

If you look isolated at the one setlist, they didn't add those songs to the previous setlists. They did replace Civil War and Coma, so the number of UYI songs in the setlist didn't increase.

No complaints here though, we can see the videos from all the concerts.

I dunno. I think Slash playing on Chi Dem songs as well as he does on Better & TWAT, is an utterly fascinating look at what could have been.  I was captivated the entire time in Vegas, but paid extra attention to Slash's guitars when he played the Chi Dem stuff.

But seriously, Axl and Slash on the same stage?  I'd pay just to hear them do Andrew Lloyd Weber hits together.

Yeah, his solo on that is blistering.  I think it's obvious that the next release has him all over it, but wouldn't be shocked if Axl "re-tooled" some of the Chinese Democracy tracks with Slash and Duff as well.  Might help give his favs a fairer shake too.

I personally think that TWAT is in the top 5 of GNR's best songs. And I would always choose Estranged over November Rain or especially KOHD. Just because a majority is thinking that something is better doesn't make it automatically true. Never been that way.

I am happy that they are doing CD songs because it is a GN'R record. And it deserves to be played live.

As much as I like discussions and as much as I respect the opinion of other fans, I really hate it when discussions are starting to be filled with stuff like this: "blind CD supporters". What should that mean? Everybody liking a song off CD is a blind CD supporter? C'mon!!

I'm thinking they may have rehearsed lots and lots of songs, then choose which ones to put up as alternatives for each single show. Meaning the alternative-list can change from show to show, opening up for songs we haven't seen on any list yet.

Im glad I got tickets for both nights, listening to TWAT was great, but i think they're still working in it. Didnt sound 100% rounded. Yesterdays, that was a beautiful gift.

I just did a Top 10 list at another board.  I have TWAT at #10.  It's the only CD song I have in the top 20.

I am happy they are doing CD songs because it heads off the "outrage" if they weren't.  I'm am all about pacification in this particular case.

I think it's because they want to play them - no matter what the reason is. I am just happy that the band sounds pretty tight, Axl is sounding awesome and the shows are selling well. More than I could have imagined to happen.

That part is bold is far and away what is important here.  I think this is a great time to be a GNR fan and we should be happy and enjoying it.

My fear would be that if CD was completely ignored, there would be a segment of fans that took serious issue with that.  And every show thread would be polluted with battles between people that think their exclusion is a travesty of justice vs. the people that give precisely zero fucks they weren't being played.

If the price for fan harmony is to play a few of those tunes, then I say, yes...play a few of those tunes.  Keep the maximum amount of people happy.

Even with Axl sounding better, I still think 'Perfect Crime' is a tough ask.

Well these first batch of shows... a lot of die hards travelled from all over the world to Coachella and Vegas... we all got a kick out of the CD songs ..especially seeing them performed by Slash.

This summer... I think there will be A LOT more fans that never gave CD a chance... they won't care as much for them. They will be there to see Axl and Slash do Jungle, SCOM and PC. I am going with a group of 10 people to the Metlife show... 7 of them won't know the name of any song other than those three and November Rain.

Yeah I mean there's no problem with a cap of 4 CD songs. I really really hope they don't go over that.

Guns N' Roses have a grand total of 50 songs from studio stuff pre Nu Gn'R and 15 songs post Nu Gn'R

I think their will always be a more songs grabbed from that 50 pool for obvious reasons.

Just like the situation we have now that people are complaining about maybe too many CD songs there would have been an outcry of people if there wasn't at least 1 song off CD. Pretty sure it would have been that way.
Although I do like CD, I wouldn't count myself to those people who would have complained. I simply enjoy the time now.

Right now it is much easier to be a GN'R fan than a couple of years ago. :)

Wow perfect crime! So yesterday's was not an alternate last night interesting.

The setlist they've been playing is a overall pleasing one. They are playing all of the hits/popular songs and a couple fan favs. "Coma" being in there really just adds a new level. There's a lot of other UYI songs that need to be played. "So Fine" in the place of the New Rose/Attitude would be great to here.

Axl wants to make a point and it is interesting to see what Slash can do to this songs, but I don't think four songs per show is really necessary. Anyway, I loved they played Yesterdays and Axl is sounding so great.

It's just really sad what happened to the fans in the bus. To think that those people were probably dreaming to this day as we all are, left their homes hoping to see their dreams come true, have a great time and then...that happened. It's sad.

I have to say, Slash's solo on TWAT is probably the most reserved and tasteful he's done in a while. And I say that as a big Slash fan. He's just been going so shredder-style lately, he seems to have lost his bluesy groove and forgotten how to play slower solos like Nov Rain. Good to see him playing more like he used to.

IMO they should play as many CD songs each night as they like. For better or worse it's part of their history. There are people who love those songs too just like there are those who love the classic stuff. So why should they deprive people of songs they love simply because they weren't written by Slash/Duff/Axl. They weren't written by Ron or Dj either but they still played them. Remember what Axl said at RIR 3 about the old stuff? He said he never did or had any intention of keeping songs from the fans that they enjoy. So why would he do it with CD just cause Slash and Duff are back? That's ridiculous.

They had it on the setlist in 2006/2007. Band (-Axl of course) even played on the soundcheck couple of times.

Honestly I thought TWAT was a mess here. Richard should play Bucket's spot. Slash couldn't even get the first solo right and it was almost tailor-made for him...

Richard should take all the ChiDem solos. Slash just... cant. If you mute the band while he's playing the solos, you can never guess what he's playing. He looks like he's playing random stuff, improvising, and the final result is an absolutely amorphous ball of sound. What he did the last night at Mexico was horrorous.

Richard is a much more skillful guitarist, and he would fit better than Slash in the more complex stuff like ChiDem.

By the way, im in love with Duff's backing vocals in TWAT. Duff looks very happy and compromised with the band and the newer stuff  :beer:

Personally I think Slash did a good job on the Bucket TWAT solo. Maybe the one CD solo he does which closest to the original also.

they might be just trying how it goes. remember 2002 and 2006 tours - different guitarists played different solos through time, until they found the perfect combo :) the only problem now is, they only have 2 guitars to choose from + general public wants Slash to play everything and don't give a fuck about "that other guy", which is a shame (just check any bootleg recording - screens always show Slash playing, even if Richard is playing the solo, mostly the same about bootleg videos)

its just neat for me to hear a new take on it. it's the closest thing to new music we've got in a long time. i also think he'll improve over time as he did with til.

as for the cd songs being too numerous, i don't think anyone (or very few people) will not buy a ticket because of it. i see it as axls way to acknowledge the cd fans instead of leaving them high and dry. it wouldn't be nice to leave behind/disregard the people that followed him and loved his work during the time that he was less popular just because he's now, for lack of a better term, a cool kid again. sure, you can look at it from a business pov (although it probably doesn't actually affect the business stuff too much), but from the whole integrity standpoint (which he seems to be big on), cd songs in the set are understandable. i would definitely have been less interested in the whole reunion thing if they dropped all the cd stuff. sure, they don't "owe" me anything, especially since I'm just watching from home, but I appreciate the gesture and like the signal it sends out to the fanbase: cd happened, it aint going anywhere, I'm still proud of it, it means a lot to me, new music may not just be afd part 2, etc...

There's always going to be this divide between the old lineup and the post 1997 lineup. I hate it, but it is almost unavoidable.

Foro sol had a 1 am curfew from what I heard. I can understand them having a strict curfew based on how many police officers were on site I ve never been to a show with a police presence like that. Rows and rows of policia in riot gear with shields.

I don't think it was tailor-made for him. Robin always had weird choices mostly on the time he hits the notes. It's not something really in Slash's style. Actually, I think that's why he rather play stuff in his own way.

CD for the fans that never heard it will actually increase sales.  For my friends who only know GNR with Slash, now are saying, "wow, I am gonna buy CD because of the shows with Slash playing it.  Slash legitimizes CD for the typical fan who is not on these sites.

I always felt if Slash was on the album it would have done better and been more well received. Not that it would've BEEN that much better, but people are fickle and refused to give it a fair shot because of the drama surrounding it, etc.

I seriously doubt there will be many "casual fans" going out to buy CD because they heard Slash play some of the songs now.

I mean you have to be EXTREMELY casual to not realize that Slash is NOT the one who is playing on that studio album. Plus, in all fairness to Slash, it's hard to compare playing live to a recording that was done in a studio and mixed and mastered even if you were the one who wrote the material - which of course in this case he didn't.

I do agree however that Slash will help legitimize CD songs as GNR songs for the casual fans and die-hard Slash fans now that he is playing them regularly.*

Uhm, what exactly are we talking about here? So many people enjoy the music without knowing who plays what. This stadium tour, so many stadiums and so many great games played there already. GNR coming to town is not historical at all. Go to a game and ask someone at half time and they will not have any idea. They'll probably ask you if you remember that whatever game.

Do a blind tasting, give them Slash or Bumblefoot or Ashba or anything, they won't know the difference.

I was specifically talking about that IMO not too many people will go out and buy the album (CD) just because they're hearing Slash play those songs on tour.  I do not think he will have any impact on sales because he does not play on the album.

Totally agree.  I have made that same point many times before because I'm one of those people who couldn't tell the difference.

Edited to clarify:  I probably couldn't tell the difference who was playing if I couldn't see them.  I do know the difference between Slash and Bumblefoot and Ashba if I'm looking at them.  :P
 

Different bands have/had different level of popularity and recognizability. GN'R happens to place on the top half of the score board in this department.

I consider GN'R to be on the second level when it comes to recognizability. Bands/artists ranking above them would be the likes of Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Elvis, Elton John, Rolling Stones, Rihanna, Madonna, Eminem.

Music videos on youtube is a clue. When GN'R videos have hundreds of millions of views, there is a good chance people know who Axl and Slash are. I'd say way more people do than don't ? if you are, or ever were a fan of them that is.

The majority of the GN'R fans happens to have become fans through the peak-era of the music video (on TV), that helps a great deal as well.

There is a very good chance they know that group. They've heard of them, they will recognise the images. If you go around Europe displaying only Duff's pic most people would say no idea but looks like some rocker. Then you tell them GNR, ahh that band of course I know.

As for buying CD no way in hell. Or of course, why not buy it if you can find it somewhere. I do some research sometimes in shops here in central Europe and haven't seen CD ever.

(I've bought six CDs over the years and I will as sure as fuck buy one more if someone is willing to sell.)

As for images, I purposely only mentioned Axl and Slash as I think only those two would represent GN'R to most casuals.

If they were to listen to the band:

Chinese.. yeah, looking at it isolated, where you disregard any news events surrounding the band, I agree with you. Although Bucket's guitar style is very different to Slash's, many casuals would probably think Slash is capable of such technical playing without even thinking about it.

The news about both the breakup and reunion of GN'R were fairly public though (the reunion likely more so than the breakup). Many casual fans did probably snap up the fact that Slash has been out of the band for a couple of decades. Far from all though.

But yes, give a random casual fan a listen to Chinese and he/she will probably think it's Slash on guitar and Guns N' Roses did just choose a new musical direction.


If none of the casuals had known that Slash ever left the band, I think Chinese would have performed way better on the charts. I think the fact that many people knew about it, combined with poor marketing, was the reason it never became a big seller. (Although, it didn't tank commercially either).

Did they break up? When at Leeds in 2002, I assumed Slash was just being shy and grabbed the first thing hide his embarrassment. Issy was there 'cos there was a black haired guitar player too.  Fuck had I know this wasn't the real deal I'd have asked for my money back.... :P

I don't get this thing about casual fans. If we are trully considering a show to make them happy, it would only have November Rain, SCOM and WTTJ. They could care less about the other stuff. If you play Better or Coma, they won't know the difference about who write what.

Honestly, they play Coma or those CD songs and are considering deep cuts like Perfect Crime because of us (and I assume because they also like to play). Isn't that enough? Why would they need to please only the casual fans who would be happy with the setlist as long as it have the hits anyways?

I liked more the second night, we enjoyed the concert from the seating area and also they included "Don't Cry" and "Yesterdays" in the setlist, the only drawback is that my wife slipped on the wet floor when we walked into the access, ironically now she has hurt her foot  :-\

The first night was amazing, being in the front row also has its drawbacks because I was more concerned to see that many people took unconsciousness or suffocated, and I had to be aware of my wife, but she was fine the whole event.
