Title: Non-Gn'R songs you would like for them to play?
Post by: Thorned Rose on April 16, 2016, 04:15:27 PM
Might be a fun topic. Just what songs would you guys like them to play? Any cover.

In the case of a cover song being played, it would more than likely replace another cover, or sadly another CD or UYI song. Which would suck.

Still fun to talk about.

I was thinking I'd love to hear "Am I Wrong" by Love Spit Love in there. I think it would be really well done by Axl.

Doing covers right now is the "big thing" in rock,e.g. Disturb's "Sound of Silence," Shinedown's "Simple Man," and Five Finger Death Punch's "House of the Rising Sun" ALL very GNResque moves by those bands. All bands, who by the way, are HUGELY influenced by Gnr. Rock fans are hungry for epic songs and good song writing. There is a huge window of opportunity for GNR right now. It is now or never. This is their last chance to fill the void. If they want it, it is there's for the taking. In the past, I always thought House of the Rising Sun and/or Sound of Silence would be great GNR covers.

Axl would tear up "Cross Eyed Mary" by Jethro Tull or "Locomotive Breath"
"Bomber" by Motorhead (time to tribute Motorhead)
"Behind Blue Eyes" The Who
"Fortunate Son" CCR
"it's a Long Way to the Top" by ACDC
"Black Mountain Blues" by Bessie Smith and Janis Joplin
"Mama I'm Coming Home" by Ozzy

Love Me Like A Reptile by Motorhead.  Axl has enough venom and snarl in his voice to just tear that one up.

Thought it was a possible choice, but doubtful.

Yes, doubtful.
But Kris Kristofferson's "Shipwrecked in the Eighties" would be fucking perfect GNR gold!! Even the title "Shipwrecked in the Eighties" fits Axl and Gnr. The quintessential eighties rock band.
The lyrics are very Axl-esque and the melody as an epic Estranged feel to it. Besides, all the musical greats cover Kristofferson sooner or later. Take a listen and just re-imagine all the country/honky tonk harmonica as Slash's weeping guitar solos. It would be brilliant. Read the lyrics below. It they don't sound like the angst and existentialism in an Axl Rose's lyrics/songs I don't know what does

Well you fight like the devil to just keep your head above water
Chained to whatever you got that you can't throw away
And you're shootin' through space on this river of life that you're ridin'
And it's whirling and sucking you deeper on down every day
So you turn to your trusty old partner to share some old feelings
And you find to your shock that your faithful companion is gone
And the truth slowly dawns that you're lost and alone in deep water
And you don't even know how much longer there is to go on
[ harmonica ]
Like an old Holy Bible you clung to through so many seasons
With the rules of survival in words you could still understand
When they prove something wrong you believed in so long you go crazy
And you're so close to folding the cards that you hold in your hand
Singing Holy Toledo I can't see the light anymore
All those horizon that I used to guide me are gone
And the darkness is driving me farther away from the shore
Throw me a rhyme or a reason to try to go on

They recorded a couple versions of Jumpin Jack Flash which were pretty good. Considering they dusted off Whole Lotta Rosie, which is another oldie from their club days, might be nice to hear JJF too. Sympathy for the Devil would be ... odd, surreal to say the least. But it would give them some closure on that chapter and would probably rock pretty good.

Some VR or Slash songs would be nice...because I think it'd be a cool "close the loop" gesture, and because Axl could sing the shit out of those songs.  Like Beggars and Hanger Ons or Slither.

There's so many great rock tunes they can play.

I think Simple Man by Skynyrd would be phenomenal if played with a bit of fire.  It'd be cool for Guns to bring back that southern rock feel and would sit great next to Civil War.  Also something like Ride On by ACDC would add another cool sound to the setlist and be different enough from everything else they play.

That said, there's no reason why they can't drop all the covers and just play music that they have written themselves during their tenures inside and outside of GNR, after all they have more than enough material between them.

Axl could pull out some unreleased tunes that he's had on the back burner during the CD era, and maybe Slash can bring something like Back in Cali, Promise or Starlight.  They have such a rich musical legacy between them that this wouldn't be a problem for them.

Incidentally, I hope they ditch KOHD from the setlist for now.  I feel it lacks the spark that made the 90's version so special.  I get frustrated with the way the chorus is sung.  The only part I find interesting is Fortus' single note leads with some his jazzy note choices and chicken picking.

Agreed, I'll sit and enjoy it but would like something else instead of the 10 minute drawn out chord progression.

Heavens Door specifically just sounds like a Guns song, it always sound 'funny' to me when I hear the original (or the Clapton Version)

What I would love to hear them do is celebrate the history of the band by working in an older club cover along with a something like Shadow of Your Love

Man, I agree that KOHD is recognised as a GNR anthem but I think the 90s way of playing it was far superior.

In fact I can't think of any rock song more perfect than this!  :peace: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFX_gmELnNE

I suppose they can adjust it for each occasion though and perhaps not have as much bombast in it unless it's a special occasion, like the Freddy Tribute was.

Agreed. I've known people who were surprised Knockin' was a Dylan song and even that LALD was McCartney. I'm all for anything that makes this a little more pushing forward and a little less nostalgia focused. I wonder if they found the right cover to play live we could possibly at least get a single of it. And Guns covers have a good record of being hits.

Guns N? Roses To Pay Tribute To Scott Weiland

Guns N? Roses are rehearsing a cover of Velvet Revolver?s ?Slither? according to a new photo of guitarist Richard Fortus? gear. In addition to ?Slither,? The ?alt.? song list for the setlist also includes ?Nice Boys,? ?Think About You,? ?Used to Love Her,? and ?Perfect Crime.?

Slash and Duff McKagan were members of Velvet Revolver with Scott Weiland from 2003 to 2008, with a one off reunion show in 2012. The legendary frontman died from a drug overdose at the age of 48 on December 3, 2015, with Slash and McKagan eulogizing their late bandmate at his funeral.

Velvet Revolver?s surviving members released the following statement last year when Scott Weiland died:

We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of our old friend and bandmate, Scott Weiland. We experience a good chunk of life with Scott, and even in his darkest times, we all had hope and love for him. His artistry will live on, of that, there is no doubt.

Deepest condolences and sadness are for his children, Noah and Lucy. We all travelled around this world together on tour; our band, wives, and kids?and we grew to a big family that still remains to this day.

It?s just so sad and brutal from any perspective.

Rest in peace Scott.
