Title: What Gn'R song could you NEVER get into that you should have loved?
Post by: Thorned Rose on February 08, 2016, 02:04:02 PM
For me there's a few. (please note I'm talking about the more well known songs that most people like. saying you couldn't get into "My World" or "Shotgun Blues" is kinda missing the point here.)

"Yesterdays" is one of them. It's a good song, but I just don't like the vibe that much and I never liked Axl's "juicy" over the top rasped vocals in this song. They just sound different in this one that his other songs that are in the same vein.

"Estranged" is another. I used to like it quite a bit. It's very poetic and very good, and the Slash solo around the 5 minute mark of one of my favorites. Over time I've just kinda skipped it a lot. It's really dark and dense. Very deep and thick for me now. I can't dig it too much. I listen to it occasionally but I mostly skip it now.

"There Was a Time" is kinda like Estranged for me. It's really dense and feels thick to me. It's great and the guitars are awesome, but its just one of those types I don't dig into too much. I still kinda like it.

"Better" while it is interesting and good, that main riff just seems very generic to me. It's still a cool song to crank up and I like it quite a bit, but it was just one of those I could never sink into too much.

I like almost all their songs, event the two I'm about to name :

- Get In The Ring
- Sorry

In both cases, I love the music.  There is a great riff on GITR, and the guitarwork overall on 'Sorry' is top notch.

But the lyrics, my god.  So fucking juvenile.  It detracts from my ability to enjoy both songs.  I cringe.

Yeah. Like I said for me it is usually the denseness of the song if that makes sense.

Get in the Ring was almost one of those for me, but I like the anger in it. I like the in your face shut up kind of stuff.

"Sorry" has always been a favorite of mine though.

The cover of "Live and Let Die".  I have always HATED that song, no matter how often they played it live, or how many GNR fans hail it as a great cover song.

I can't stand "Patience" either.  Yes, that's right, I said it.  I don't care how many people love it.  For me, the slow pace and infernal whistling are absolutely unnerving.

I can't stand the alternate version of "Don't Cry" either.  Not sure if that falls under the thread's title of "I should have loved it", but the lyrics are mediocre and uninvolving.

Yeah Live and Let Die is up there for me too. I don't like the verse riffs, but the chorus and stuff has a mean bite to it.

Knockin' on Heaven's Door-album version.

I love that this band covered a Bobby D song, but I don't love the album version. Too big for what the song is supposed to convey-in my opinion. And the phone call thing in the middle is very cringe-worthy. Also, I'm pretty sure they don't play the Am chord in their version which is unfortunate. However, I do love it done live in all of it's different incarnations from the 80's, 90's and on up through the different versions done by the new lineups. Very cool in fact.

You Ain't the First - It felt like they were trying for some kind of country sound that just didn't do it for me

The only GN'R song to follow a 3/4 Waltz time. Crank it up at the next ballroom dance.  :smoking:

I used to sing this song to me ex girlfriend... swear on my life.

She'd get furious... and i'd laugh... good times.

I always go to the bathroom during Patience. Just not my thing. Chinese Democracy is also up there for me... but I couldn't miss the opener  :)

Anything Goes just never did it for me

Off of CD - I hate SOD - don't know why, because I love piano driven rock songs - but this one always has and still does just bore this crap out of me

I loved every Gn'R song since the first time listened until a good amount of years later... but today I can't stand things like LALD, SCOM (live), Civil War, Out Ta Get Me, November Rain and Don't Cry.

Prostitute. Many consider it the best or one of the best songs on CD. Not me. Couldn't stand it the first time I heard it.

"Seems like forever.....and a day"

and just gets worse from there. I listened to CD again a few months ago and didn't hate it to the extent I did years ago(the guitar work is pretty damn good) but I just cant get into it.

Sorry's music is incredible but the lyrics make me cringe. Bucket is outstanding on this track. Gave it exactly what it needed.

Scraped......horrific intro and just feels like a wannabe anthem. Even though I hate it, it would've been interesting to see how this song would've went over with the general public as a single had CD been released in 01-02. A wannabe anthem in 08 might have been a real anthem at that time.

TIL...terrible solo. I can only imagine what Bucket would've brought to this track. Listen to songs like Padmasana, Sketches of Spain, etc. and something like that was needed for this song.

CITR.....amazing lyrics though.

UYI II version of KOHD....wish it had not been on the album. The Marquee version that somehow wound up in constant radio rotation on Top 40 radio in 88-89 was much better. I can see why they would record it and use it for that soundtrack but it should've been left there IMO.

You're Crazy from AFD...while I do consider AFD the greatest album ever made I could easily live without this song. The only song worth skipping IMO. The Lies version is incredible though and my favorite song from Lies.

The cover of "Live and Let Die".  I have always HATED that song, no matter how often they played it live, or how many GNR fans hail it as a great cover song.
I agree and disagree as Bill Clinton would say.

I HATE the polished version on the album but think it sounded much better live on that UYI tour. I do think it needed to be retired from the set many years ago.....even before the CD era. By 92 it should've been replaced with something else from UYI.

Off of CD - I hate SOD - don't know why, because I love piano driven rock songs - but this one always has and still does just bore this crap out of me
I thought the 2002 version was incredible. 2006 and beyond it had been neutered.

I was kinda like that. It was a good track but never really dug it until recently. I think it is one of the best ones now.

My World is fucking trash. There's no artistic feel to it... there's no avant-garde inside of it. It's just a mental freak song.

Prostitute is okay at best. I hate the intro of it. It's so lame. And heavy in feeling.

Hmm very interesting topic.  Lets see, I would have to say "Live and Let Die" fits the bill for me.  Live it is pretty cool, but I never really liked the studio version.  Also not a very big fan of "The Garden."

This is going to be a pretty unpopular opinion, but here it is, I don't like the guitar intro to "Sweet Child O' Mine."  I don't hate it, but I don't really like it all that much either.  I love the chord progression, verses, vocals, guitar solo, you name it. "Sweet Child" is one of my favorite songs ever.   I just don't like the intro/main riff that much, and its arguably their most famous guitar part.

Honestly, there's only one. Street of Dreams.

I liked the live version from day one, when it was still called "The Blues". And I had high hopes for the studio version, but for some reason it just sounds "flat" and boring to me. I was really surprised when I listened to CD for the first time, SOD is easily the weakest point on the album. And why oh why did they change the name to such a clich?? :hihi:
