Title: What do you want a next album to sound like?
Post by: CherryGarcia on January 27, 2016, 09:36:30 AM
Myself, if they could produce something between AFD and the UYIs in sound, it'd be epic. Something along the lines of their version of "Innuendo" (by Queen) - some hard rockers, some epics, and a couple of experimental pieces. Imagine say, Locomotive 2016, basically, followed by Slash and Duff's take on a Shackler's type song, followed by an It's So Easy type mid rocker, with an acoustic ballad thrown in there somewhere.

I say let it out naturally.

Im sure Slash has matured, improved, and learned stuff in the past 20 years, let the sound come out naturally. Don't try and reproduce anything, don't try to ''BURY" anything.
Just have fun creating music. Play off eachother,  learn to Jam with Richard and Frank.

I would like an album that sounds light. One track for each instrument. Possibly 2 tracks for Axl's vocals MAX !

Shoehorning Slash over some songs done 10-15 years ago, who knows how that will sound?

I know you meant that as negative thing , but I would have no problem whatsoever of they did that.  If all of these songs are done sitting around why wouldn't you want to go through them with Slash and Duff and see what happens?  I also believe a song is "done" when it's released to the public.  Before that they are just ideas.  Sure they might be mixed and mastered ideas but only when they get released to the public are they "done."  That's when there is no going back from it .Until then you can change anything you want.

Slash?s Snakepit + Axl?s CD-like ballads + his 2010 voice ? and it?s brilliant.

Oh, I'd be for anything that gets us new material.  Up to, and including, taking hostages.

I'm speaking just from a style standpoint.  Honestly, if they go that route, I would say erase the guitar track entirely and let Slash lay down his own take on it.

I'm cool with whatever they try honestly. If will be good at the least.

As far as sound goes... I would want Civil War meets Don't Damn Me meets 14 Years meets Nightrain...

Just good old piano/hard rock. In that vein of piano like rock with fast and hard beats. Like the songs I wrote above^^^.

I'm always good for 1 or 2 Axl ballads too. I still think "This I Love" is a top 10 Guns N' Roses song.

What does 'like Guns N' Roses' sound like, though?
Jungle sounds way different from Estranged. Estranged in turn sounds way different from Shackler's Revenge. So what does GN'R sound like?

The Stones can be broken down as Mick vocals, Keith riffs, jazzy backbeat from Charlie
Led Zeppelin could be broken down as wails from Robert, epic guitar riffs from Jimmy, dark, brooding or jazzy keyboard parts from John Paul, and thunderous drums from John,

Yeah it is tough to do. They really are their own sound.

AFD was very Stones meets Aerosmith in a lot of ways when it came out, then UYI stuff really changed that.

It gave them their own sound with 70s rock roots I think. Very cool.

Book of Souls is indeed fucking excellent, but I don't really want Guns N' Roses to sound like that.

I'd love to have a new album - whenever the songs were written and whoever plays on them, as long as it sounds good I'll dig it.  Maybe more likely would be a best-of album with a couple of new tracks as bonus material.  That way they get new songs out, but don't need to write a whole album if they don't want to.

1. modern and sharp as f**k. ChiDem (the title track) was close to that.
2. epic stuff. like Estranged, Coma, TWAT.
3. totally classic RNR riffing with a drive like a locomotive. like Nightrain. and Locomotive.  :hihi:
make a damn mix of all these and you're there!

What?

I can only speculate. But I think some people have the impression that they (Axl, the band) didn't know when to finish the song, when to stop adding stuff to it? so in a sense its like the songs sound like they are not finished, thus they sound like demos.

I think that's what he means by that.

Further thinking... maybe imagine Slash's Snakepit's "It's 5 o clock somewhere" album with Axl on vocals right...

then add in some CD tone to it. and that would be great

nah, I like 5OCS, but it was far from GNR. it was closer to for example Gilby Clarke's solo albums, only a few GNR-ish moments like Back and Forth Again. and Axl already said in the past, that he didn't want to do songs like Be The Ball, which I completely agree with!

It'd be interesting to hear a mix of material updated from post UYI, Chi Dem, and new stuff! I could even see a side A that is more RnR and a side B that is more experimental/ theatrical.

I don't think hoping for a certain style or even an evolution in a particular direction equates to trying to be someone else.

So What does Guns N Roses sound like?? I thought they were a band that couldn't be pigeon holed?

Of the various styles that they have done so far (AFD style rock, Piano ballads, Lies style semi acoustic, electronica Silkworms style, etc etc or perhaps a more modern best of Slash rock album with Axl singing aggressively. Or a completely different direction.)

If an album was to turn up tomorrow which style would you likely enjoy more? your answer of 'Like Guns N Roses' seems to be a non answer.

I would love to hear new kickass music with whatever they want to write. Be it power ballads or straight foward hardrock.

I can also talk about mixing: Id love to hear the mixing more simple. It's ok to have layers, but let the song breath more. Let Duff's bass show up like the old days. Put the guitars in stereo, with Slash always on the right speaker. You know, simple stuff like that can make even epic songs like Coma and Estranged to have a common identity aside from Axl's singing.

Not necessarily. But I saw comments about who people wished they would sound like album X or band Y.

Some say Appetite sounds like Aerosmith mixed with punk, some say Oh My God sounds like Nine Inch Nails.
To me it all sounds like GN'R: :)

Fair enough comment but I guess people use that as a point of reference. I mean if the colour green just became visible for the first time it may be described as a bit like mixing blue and yellow. Doesn't mean that doesn't have it's own unique properties. All points of view I guess.

As for my preference I need to think about that for a bit to consider what would be a cohesive sound.

Something that Slash and Duff will bring to the table, if they ever do record something, is something that Chinese Democracy lacks: fast-paced songs.

Its not unusual for bands to become confused, paranoid and schizophrenic  when it comes to their sound. The sound of the next album.

What they should not do is listen to the fans.

Built To Spill, a small band released You in Reverse, an album that had a bit of a contrast or departure from their previous releases, it had longer songs, it had  great electric guitar work that prevailed throughout the whole album, a bit of a jam and rocking feel to it.

Its one of my favorite albums of all time. However most fans didnt like the album, they wanted  the "old sound". What the band did on the followup to You In Reverse was try to please the fans, and released an album that in my opinion was terrible, but most fans where happy because it sounded more like what Built to spill should sound like to them.

This reminds me of the new Star Wars, the studio gave fans what they wanted, a beautifully wrapped ''star wars movie'' that looks great on the outside, but once you peel the surface, there is nothing of substance in there.

Pretty sure Slash blew his wad on the first VR album.  But who knows what can happen, if the juices start flowing again.

I doubt Slash has potential hit-songs laying around, he would've used his best material for each album he's done I think.

Maybe riffs or chord progressions he didn't know how to proceed with...

Izzy is there helping them write new stuff. That is what we hear. Nothing confirmed as stated already.

I want a Use Your Illusion album for sure. They can mix it up and add some CD feel to it. That's fine. I just don't want CD II with Slash and Duff at the helm. That would be fairly disappointing to me.

Use Your Illusion I and II were somewhat experimental with the piano stuff mixed in. It was kinda a surprise ya know? Hard rock with a piano and harmonica that rocked. Loved it.

Bad Obsession meets You Could Be Mine meets Right Next Door to Hell meets November Rain

that style of music is what I would personally love to hear.

It's completely possible that Axl, Slash and Duff were greatly inspired once they became a band again, thus creating new stuff out of the blue. It can happen when you're in an environment with a high level of energy and passion.
