Mysterious Guns N? Roses Teaser Hits Movie Screens Nationwide

Guns N? Roses fans who have hit cinemas this weekend to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens are getting a pleasant surprise. According to several eyewitnesses, including one of our editors, three brief clips of ?Welcome to the Jungle? are being played over black-and-white crowd footage during the pre-trailers programming ? with no further explanation.

In other words, either something big is up with Guns N? Roses, or they?re going for the world record in classic rock trolling. Combined with the band?s recent website redesign, these new videos make it seem clear that the group is teasing a major announcement, although there?s no indication of exactly what?s in store yet.

On Thursday, Guns N? Roses updated the cover and profile photos on their Facebook page with black-and-white shots of a crowd similar to the one in the videos, including the one embedded below. There is no explanation given.

i saw the movie this past tuesday and didn't see anything like that. possibly something that was added just this weekend when there are bigger crowds at movie theaters will have to see if anyone else noticed this. Meaning behind it who knows.

Well, something seems to be happening.. there's endless possibilities. Original 5, UYI, hybrid, Robin n' Bucket, brand new line-up, CD 2, Stay of Execution... one thing is sure though. If they start airing teaser videos, something is bound to happen within a relative short period of time. They can't just bring out the curiosity and then wait weeks and months until something is said, the element of intrigue would have vanished then, it would be a waste of money for them.

Oh, I liked him. I think he'll be more badass in the last two movies.

I'm seeing Star Wars in the US (Boston Area) tomorrow, so I'll update if I see it. A friend of mine saw the movie today and didn't see it, but he didn't see all of the trailers... Based on the description of being 'pre trailer' that could mean it is only in certain theaters (like AMC, Lowes, etc...).

I don't know how I will react when and if this is announced officially...

Only a band like Guns N Roses would have done this back in the day, and now it seems like they are instantly the biggest band in the world again.  This is so exciting!

The guy who recorded the clip answered me on instagram, he saw this in a theater in Illinois

The advertisers have to pay according to the number of ticket holders for the screening as far as I know.

By picking Star Wars, the ad(s) they are running can't be cheap.

But, by running more "teasers" without telling us anything, keeping it cryptic... there's bound to be even more positive exposure. And, by keeping the teaser-run short, 1 week+, the exposure doesn't turn sour because nothing comes out of it.

I think, since Coachella is an AEG Live event, and AEG is GNR's concert promoter in the US, it is fair to say that if they want to announce US dates, the promoter wouldn't want to announce a GNR tour now leaving a gap for the festival and then sort of spoil the announcement for Coachella a little later.

Seems to be US only, but First Look is wider than just Regal... They also have a subsection of the company that focuses on 'events' , and have shown 'live' concerts and things like boxing matches and UFC fights in movie theaters. Maybe they will have exclusive rights to a 'launch' show or one off hybrid lineup show.

Guns N' Roses are back. Slash is back! Axl is back. Yeah! Slash was and is the real deal. All that "liars-gossip" was bullshit. I mean, they solved the problem. I'm cool with whatever Axl does. Axl is loyal as fuck. From the bottem of his heart he is a great human being. He just tends to stand in his own way.

I'm pretty excited about what's to come.  However, I'm trying not to get my hopes to high so that I won't be crushed.  Going to see Star Wars tomorrow at a Regal cinema location.  Hopefully the teaser still will be playing.  Exciting times for all!

If it does happen... I look at it as Slash & Duff rejoining Axl's existing band.  That means CD II is still in the works, with maybe Slash & Duff adding a few touches to some tracks.

A friend of mine that lives in Minnesota just told me that saw the teaser before The Hateful Eight on theaters yesterday

Random thoughts:

• Perhaps the First Look ad buys hint toward some kind of concert telecast into theaters?
• Coachella booked AC/DC last year and OutKast the year before, so 'revivals' seem to be their thing lately.
• The site and fan marketing seems to be still operated by Team Brazil (Fernando & Beta) and WonderfulUnion.  Some places to watch for clues.
• As usual, never a sure thing till you hear those five magic words...

The $ that will be spent (ridiculous amounts) to see this will be spent to see Axl / Slash / Duff perform together again. Would be even better if Izzy and Adler were there , but the rest is window dressing. Could care less to see Bach latching on to this...and would agree with previous comments regarding Sorum..he has a wash-woman's mouth and it may come back to bite him here. Fascinating watching this whole thing unfold, to say the least.

This is indeed great times, hope everything goes smoothly if our suspicions are confirmed and a reunion of the appetite band (well some, not all members) goes ahead. Smooth sailing is all I ask :)

why would all this momentum not be used to support some kind of release? that would be such a waste. i think we will hear something about a release soon. i think axl cares about cd and its fans way too much to let its for us long awaited follow up be buried under a reunion tour. theres no reason we cant have both, and i think he has all the negotiating power in the world right now if a reunion is really on the table.

I disagree with the people who think it starts and stops at Slash/Duff/Axl, I get their point that they are the main draw cards and all, but anyone who thinks having Izzy and Adler up there with them isn't a significant step up in terms of what a reunion means is kidding themselves.

In saying that, If this goes ahead and it's Axl Duff, slash snd whoever else from the later lineups then I'll still be buzzed.

The best part of this 'news worthy item' is they go into how it was written on his bass amp back in the day, but they somehow miss that it is tattoo'd on the inside of his left wrist which you can see holding the neck of his bass guitar in that very picture.

So, there is a rumor that there will be an announcement tomorrow? am i right?

Nobody is sure whether Trunk meant this Tuesday (the 29th) or the following Tuesday (the 5th).  The Jan 5th date would jive with rumors about a Cochella appearance, since that's the date they announce their festival line up.

People were saying the 5th... So when Trunk says Tuesday I'm not sure if that is tomorrow or the following Tuesday rumor that was being thrown around before. Something tells me that on Wednesday the 6th we are going to be talking about a day in February.

Very curious how they would make this type of announcement ...

I can't envision them standing up on a podium answering questions on how this all came about ha.

I'd be a little surprised if it was tomorrow...mostly because I don't think Slash would want to steal the thunder of the Conspirators gig on New Years eve.

But, at this point, anything is possible.  That trailer that started playing this weekend means there is 100% "something" going on with GnR.  It's no longer idle speculations that something is happening, etc.  Nobody shells out those kinda bucks....and make no mistake, those kinds of trailers in front of Star Wars ain't cheap...without a good reason. And without concrete plans of what, when, and how it's going down. That's not someone trolling the fan base...or some vague line from Trunk...or some clickbait link/headline from some tabloid-y type site. It's much more tangible than any of that.

We can, I guess, argue what that "something" is.  CDII release, another tour with a revamped lineup, a reunion, something else.  But it's SOMETHING.

And...I mean...I would say this pretty much jives with what Fernando said awhile back. Right?  I mean....this sure seems to be leading to some sort of announcement.

Nah, I doubt we get a full blown presser quite yet.  Maybe eventually.

Probably a joint press release, with some quotes in it from the principal players.  And maybe, at roughly the same time (or following, closely), some press releases from any festivals they're booked at.

i guess the next step may be the teaser hit gunsnroses.com. and some tiny updates on the site until they the main announcement is made.. if there is an announcement coming up in the near future.. we dont know for sure yet..

But...I mean...we know it's something to do with GnR.  Pretty much FOR SURE.

The fact that Metal Sludge still exists in 2015 is perhaps the saddest thing on the net. No one there has any inside info at this point - Stevie's just playing the odds.

The new material rumor is the only thing that has my attention so far. As a huge fan of the most recent lineup, and having seen Guns numerous times, it's hard to get excited for a tour without that. So, fingers crossed.

I completely agree 'something' is happening, but with decades of experience watching this band, I have to laugh a little though at the idea that things are going to go smoothly and meet timelines. If a third party (Coachella for example) is responsible for the announcement then yes, it will go down on a specific date... However I can't help but shake the feeling though that this 'teaser' is going to bite someone in the ass. Either the band doesn't meet a date and or deadline, or the teaser wasn't fully baked and signed off by WAR and gets pulled back (like the HD commercial, the DVD's, etc...). Something about that teaser just doesn't seem polished, which make me wonder if First Look or someone else in the chain just pulled the trigger. That type of thing seems to happen to GnR/Axl more than any other major act.

I suspect....and we'll see if it's true...that the teaser playing was for Cochella (paid for and put together by them, with GnR's blessing and input).  I've seen Cochella teasers before, running in theaters, so they have the contacts to do it, and a history OF doing it. It's similar to their artistic style of previous teasers (which didn't focus so much on a particular act, but on the festival, itself and the "experience".)  ASSUMING (and you know what they say about assuming) GnR really are doing Cochella, that is.  

That's my wholly unfounded theory.  Hopefully, we'll see within the next week or so.

But no matter who it's "from", it's a brilliant teaser, IMHO.  And it's obviously been effective, because...well, look at the coverage it's getting from EVERYWHERE.

I don't think GnR (the band) pays for and puts together that teaser.  I mean..they could, I guess..but it's far more likely for something like that to be done by a promoter, a label, an event/festival, etc.

And those things/folks don't spend that kind of money on a teaser in front of the biggest movie...well, potentially EVER, but at the very least this year..without the i's being dotted and the t's being crossed.

No, that doesn't preclude something going haywire, and I get the caution in buying in since...as you pointed out..there's previous evidence of things going sideways on occasion (yes, I'm being a bit sarcastic).

But I'd say it's about as positive a sign of some sort of activity as we've had since, at least, the end of June 2014.  And it's a GOOD sign...because (to my way of thinking) it's gotta be something pretty big to warrant this kind of run up.  We've not gotten anything like this for previous tours, festival appearances...hell, even CD's actual release.

Now, maybe this is just someone "doing it right"....and it's the promotion we all moan about there being a lack of, running up to something less "world exploding" than a reunion.  Totally possible. Hell, maybe they're doing a retrospective documentary about GnR "through the ages" and this is the first teaser.  I sorta doubt it (film making isn't secretive enough to keep that under wraps, IMHO), but...at this point, as I said, anything is pretty much possible.

But...even so..even with that uncertainty...I think at this point we can all agree it's "something".  Folks spend a lot of time bemoaning the lack of information, or activity, or whatever.  Well, here you go.  We got something.  And, IMHO, that something is being presented in a pretty cool, remarkable, way.

I know I should be happy with the sudden movement, even if there is a top secret 'riddles' like feel to all of this... but ironically with the placement of the teaser, i just hear Admiral Ackbar in the back of my head yelling ''It's a trap!"

Somehow don't see a teaser before the largest movie opening ever, being done to let the world know that Axl is back on tour with 2 new guitarists that nobody ever heard.

Exactly. It certainly seems that there are far too many small coincidences thst all tip the scales toward something big, ie. A reunion. That, or it's one of the greatest practical jokes of all time.

Then again, I've learned over the years that anything can and will happen with this band. So I'm trying not to get too excited. It's getting tougher every day though.

Anyone been able to figure out which advertising company who made the cinema teaser? Sometimes you can find out more info about their projects on their websites. If the teaser is part of a campaign, we might be able to find posters, radio spots etc.

I've been looking at some they've used before, but nothing. It seems they often use a different company for each campaign.

I'm no expert on this, but have been looking a little bit.

Ad time at movie theaters aren't that expensive actually. Some places you pay according to the number of visitors, and other places there's a flat rate per week per screen. I've seen $250 mentioned some places for the latter example.

I don't know how many screens they've been displaying, but let's say 1000. That could be $250,000 for the week.

In comparison that's less than what you pay for one 30 sec tv spot during prime time tv.

The gnr spot wasn't that. It was part of the previews reel.  Those are national buys, as they accompany a particular movie, along with the rest of its preview package. For example, star trek was bundled with star wars in the first week.

Those buys typicall cost mega bucks (often a million plus), depending on the movie they are tied to. Anything tied to star wars is pretty much at the top of the price point, too.

Edit: this wasn't a full trailer...it was teaser length, so that might bring costs down a bit.

Also ncm has 1350 theaters. Assume about 1500 screens for star wars, minimum, in those chains.

I might be wrong, but I think I read somewhere that the trailers were shown before other movie(s) as well....

When you say preview reel, do you mean it was in between the movie trailers? Because other people have said it was shown before the trailers began, among other normal commercials.


Looking at FirstLook's website, their pre-show reel lasts for 20 minutes so I think that's before the lights dim.

Leading into the movie trailers. Thats what i heard from someone in a theater, yes. It was like the first thing on the preview reel.

Now, maybe they were wrong, and it was running with the block ads (the "normal" commercials). But thats not what i had heard.

Yeah, i hadn't seen that. And the two people i know who actually saw it, that i know irl, said they saw it once, just as the lights dimmed (different theaters in different places).

 If so, your prices are more in line...a little low considering what was showing in front. If jarmo is right, and it was also showing in front of other movies, figure 300-400 per screen, and prob between 1500 and 1800 screens.  A buy of around 500 -750k. If it was every screen in every one of the 1350 theaters....you'd be looking at roughly 5k screens but prob with a lower buy in per (that would be roughly 250 per). Or about 1.25 million.

It should be mentioned that Coachella is an AEG Live event.

AEG Live is also GN'R's tour promoter in the US.

And as someone mentioned earlier, AEG is a client of NCM (the company running the movie teaser).

You are correct, heard this from a few people at different movies over the last few days

went to an AMC movie theater tonight to watch Joy and saw it, I kinda tricked my wife to go to a regal or amc theater cuz i heard its where they were showing the teaser, I arrived early so I won't mis it, and then bam! the riff of welcome to the jungle on the screen with the crowd, but just lasted a second or two, then a few commercials of new tv series, then bam! a little longer clip and right after "you know where you are....." cut!....then i thought ok, this is killing me lol, I was the only one in there that jumped right when i hear every clip, my wife even slap my arm because she got scared when i jumped of the chair, and after another round of commercials finally, the full teaser came out, it is awesome. I enjoyed the movie but to be honest i went to see the teaser so the movie was just a plus.
Since the first time I heard Guns n Roses what was I was 14-15 years old and sweet child o mine played on MTV I been a big fan of this band since then, that is why this is a big deal for me, I had the name of the 5 members write on my jeans and they became a big part of my youth. I love this band since then, I loved the new GnR too and saw them live and enjoyed every show, but the reunion, even with the 3 of them, or 4 or 5, its like going back to that very first day I heard the music that changed my life.

Is this only being shown at regal theatres for the Star Wars showing? I'm about to drive 40 mins out of the way just to see it, because there is only one of these in my area or are other theaters showing it now as well?

There's a bunch of theater chains, and independant theaters, that use NCM.  Our small, local theater does (Cinerom) as do a bunch of the chains (an old Hoyts thats now independant, AMC, and Regal).

They provide content to about 1350 theaters around the U.S.  You can find a local theater they provide content to (and thus, you might see the teaser at), here:

It's not really tied to a specific chain, but to a specific advertising network/agency that does business with a bunch of U.S. theaters and chains.  NOT EU, though, as far as I can tell.

IF the ad, itself, is really for Coachella featuring GnR...and that's my operating theory...since it's a US based festival, I don't think they do too much advertising outside the US.

If it's for a tour or album...I'd expect those ads to start popping up abroad, shortly. Somehow.

I would't rule it out entirely, however if this is being paid for by Coachella I wouldn't think that they would spread a ton of money overseas. While yes there will be people who travel there, I would think that a significant portion of the audience is going to be US based so just looking at 'bang for your buck' I would think these stay focused in the US.

You can only announce the reunion once, after that it is the reformed band additional shows.  Bit like pulling a cracker  at xmas, if it doesn't go bang then you just don't get the same anticipation next time round, but you still get the gift and joke..

I think you only need to announce it once. Not to put down the CD era lineups, but when (IF) they take the stage at Coachella this will be the core of Guns N Roses on stage for the first time together since 1993. It will be picked up internationally from there because the bulk of the media and music listening public views Axl, Slash, and Duff as GNR. Trust me you won't miss the coverage of this (IF it happens).

It will be the biggest news the band has made since Clinton's first term.

In the past week I have had at least 10 people call me or text me who have never visited a GNR message board in their life and never will go to me "have you heard about GNR??"

An official announcement would be epic.

It is indeed a big figure for this "promotion", even if it's just like 5/ 10/ 15 seconds trailers, but I'm wondering why they didn't add a logo or website address? I'm not sure what they're trying to say with this trailer. A live pic of Axl/ Slash/ Duff over the crowd shots would have been a lot clearer...

You also could have been a lot clearer if you put Godzilla or Cloverfield in the first trailers too.

But a little mystery marketing can work too.  You are pretty sure you know what's there, but still stay tuned because you want that big reveal.

I guess there's really two ways to look at it... But if you choose the "mystery" road, I guess you'd have to solve the mystery pretty soon. 10 days after the first trailer (Coachella announcement?) seems a bit far for me, at the age and time of social networks.

I think if they've put the Coachella logo in the teaser, they would've ruined their own official line-up announcement.

They could've had the GNR logo, but I don't think it would have served much purpose. Everyone knew it was Guns N Roses. Only thing is they would've established that the teaser indeed was FOR Guns N Roses, and not just a generic thing which just happened to have a GNR soundtrack.

If there is a reunion, I don't see the need for 3... none of the classic material was written for 3 guitars. They had to force tradeoff's (like the SCOM solo with DJ handing off to Bumble)... in 2002 at points Bucket just stood on the left hand side of the stage (from the fan view) and stood hunched over like he was 'turned off' while he wasn't needed for a quick noodling solo during the Appetite stuff. Even the CD era material that 'suits' the classic line up only really needs two guitars (TIL as an example).. would love to see Slash's take on that solo if they agreed to play an CD material here or there during a tour.

The classic songs do have enough guitar tracks for 3 guitars, it's more that you'll have to leave out certain things when playing live with 2 guitars. Slash and Izzy didn't just record one track each for the songs. There are fills, additional rhythm etc.


Edit to add: When playing live with 2 guitars, they play the essential notes, so it's not a BIG difference from the studio version, mostly subtle.

I could see Better & TIL be the only CD songs in the set list.  I would be very surprised if there's a 3rd guitarist.

I should have said guitarists more than guitars... That is true of most acts, but when performed live they improvise. The CD material was written for 3 guitarists (with actually more than 3 guitar tracks recorded)

My point though being, your can't deny that early on in the 2000's live, bucket would literally play nothing for stretches of time. Robin and Paul/Richard covered the meat of the classic tracks.

This is my opinion (which may or may not be shared with others) but taking the vocals out of the equation entirely, the RNRHOF performance of SCOM is the best that song has been performed under the GnR moniker since the 90's... While Axl owns the name and his version of the band is Guns N Roses, for 3 songs and 20ish minutes that was Guns N' Roses minus Axl Rose and most HBO viewers (in the US not sure how it was broadcast internationally) would agree. It was done with 2 guitars, and while I enjoy Gilby, I am drooling thinking of what Slash and Richard would do with those tracks live (if the rumors hold true).

I could see SOD... that to me has a very 'old', 'classic' (trying to avoid original) line up feel to it.

If the tour does happen, I wish we could have old favorites from the UYI era back in the setlist that hasn't been played in decades, like Locomotive, Double Talkin' Jive, So Fine and Yesterdays. And why not.. Coma.

Honestly, as far as a reunion goes, there's no bad choice to open the show, except maybe November Rain.  Hell, Slash can walk out with the opening chords to SCOM and it would be absolutely deafening. People have been waiting a looooong time for this.

Yes very true. I just don't want to see Jungle as the opener anymore. For people who have followed the new band the past 15 years I think something different would be great. I know CD has been the opener then then they went straight Jungle. Also to then go right into It's So Easy and Mr. Brownstone I don't think there's been a single show in the past 15 where they didn't play Jungle, ISE and Brownstone back to back to back. It would be fresh if that was mixed up.

It would be great if they bring back Pretty Tie Up and So Fine. I love Locomotive and Coma but I agree that most likely it won?t happen  :(

The one thing we do NOT know is....what this weekend will bring.  Maybe another, longer trailer? Maybe something else to keep the mystery progressing?
 
But even if not, I don't think 10 days is "too long", considering WHAT we're talking about (a trailer in front of a movie).  MOST of the time, those types of things are not going to get the kind of press and attention this one has.  Your exposure rate on this type of ad is, relatively speaking, lower than say a TV ad or even an online trailer on youtube.  The advertising guys may very well have figured it would take 10 days or so to reach critical mass.  Maybe they were (and I'm sure quite happily so) wrong about how long it would take to get enough eyeballs on it to be effective.

Axl has been using 'Nightrain' to close shows for 15 years.  

Might slide that back is as an opener, like back in the day.

100% agree with this! Watched Slash do a 14 minute rocket queen in Sydney and it was simply epic. It would provide a good break for Axl if he needs it at some point in the show as well.

Did the same thing today. Went to see Star Wars with my wife, who's never seen any of them so she really had no interest. We got there about 20 minutes early and after a few ads, the 1st GNR tease came on. I gave her a nudge and it was over in like 5 seconds. We were both like, "that's it?" But then a few minutes later the longer version came on. I too, think I was the only one in the theater who knew anything about it and I was clearly the most excited guy in the theater at that moment. Movie was great too, so like you said, bonus! Now the Billboard news. Can this day get much better?

I hear that. I had both my phone and iPad going last night simultaneously getting all the updates. I started freaking out a little when they both started to run low on battery. I got to see the teaser today at a Regal cinema before Star Wars. It's funny how just a little skeptic one can be until they see it with their own eyes. Definitely made me more confident about the future of Guns N Roses in 2016.

Today in an AMC in the Chicago suburbs, trailer played before the Disney/Pixar "The Good Dinosaur."  Kind of funny to have Axl tell he kids it's "time to die!"

I went to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens at Carmike Cinemas but no GN'R "teaser" was shown.
