Title: The Live Versions: #1 - Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Post by: Spirit on November 26, 2015, 09:34:50 AM
A new series of threads... "THE LIVE VERSIONS".

Let's take a look at the different versions we have of the different songs when played live from all eras of the band. Not all songs are vastly different, so we'll concentrate on the obvious ones.

Starting off with the song which has been through the most changes, KOHD.

What is your favorite version of the song? The straight forward version played in the '80s, the horn-section extended solo version of the '90s or perhaps the revamped "back to the original" version of the early '00s? Feel free to post youtube links of the version you like the most.

Personally I'm a huge fan of the version played in 2001. Love Axl's very different vocals on the song, Buckethead's solo is beautiful and the song isn't too long. It's much calmer and softer than the album version, and I really like the mellow vibe to the whole thing. In the future I wish Axl will take it back to something similar when playing it live.

The late 2000s and early 2010s (2006 - 2014) is good. It's layed back

The 90s version was more hard core, more rock n roll

Can't go wrong with the ritz version

Ritz 88.
And both Rio 91 versions.

Probably favorites because of the nostalgic part, more than "best" version 😊

Paris 1992 and Chicago 1992.

I prefer the version with the full circus going on with the dancers, the reggae part ect.

All the versions of 2014 were awesome too.

I loved the 80 and 90 versions.

The 80 was very raw. And 90 was more powerfull.

And dont like the original version, seems a little boring to me.

So if i have to choose 1. I pick the album version.

Freddie Mercury Tribute 1992 and Rock Am Ring 2006 are my favorite versions. Don't like the Ritz version nor the studio version.

If I had to choose one version, the freddie mercury tribute is the best ever.and the 1st time it was played in Marquee '87.
But frankly now,it bores me.Maybe it's time to drop it on the next tour, whenever that is. In those 15 boring minutes ,you could fit 3 killer songs.

hated bobs version. when i saw that clip from the versace show i fell in love. 2001 version was beautiful too.

the one from afd dvd blows me away. the vibe is unreal. to me it really shows off just how amazing the guitarists and everyone else was. whereas better felt too crowded, too much being shoved into a small time frame, too fast, kind of  a clusterfuck, no time for axl to catch his breath, kohd was the opposite. everyone gets their time to shine. love how ax does the oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh part.

i would kill to hear a studio version or more music done in this style from gnr. i think they could pull off mellow stuff really well. would love to see a slow laid back version of better done like that.

Freddie Mercury version, including Only Women Bleed intro, is by far my favorite. Great solo's, cool reggae part, some singalong and not too long like they would usually do during the UYI tour.

My favourite version of the song, which gave me a new appreciation for it at the time, is from H.O.B 2001. Axl's vocals were so different to what we were all used to. I also really liked the 2002 version. Ohh, and I really liked the 2006/2007 version. Ummm but overall, I guess H.O.B 2001 would be my all time favourite version of KOHD... maybe... probably.

Fuck, now I can't decide.

This one is special to me, it sounds more like Dylan's version but is superb.

Anyone remember the rumor (?) that GNR had recorded 4 different versions of KOHD in the late 90s/early 2000s, and among them a reggae version as well.

If true, I wonder if they were thinking about alternate versions during touring.

Well they did.

They started without the reggae part in 1991, they started occasionally jamming some reggae on it during the summer 1991 tour.

Then when Gilby came they added the backing vocal melodies, and the ''gimme some reggae!'' part.

Then in the skin and bones tour they did the acoustic version.

Paris PPV, for me.

I prefer it with the 'Only Women Bleed' intro, and I think that show has the best version of it.

Freddie Mercury tribute blew my mind the first time I heard it, also loved the Inland Invasion version in 2006 great scream at the end

Don't have a favorite version I guess, I have the opposite though.

Hadn't listened to the RIR2001 version for years. I actually liked it now, didn't really care for it before.

It's a good song for crowd participation but not a song that I really care for on the set list.

Sometimes Axl has sung it with an almost cowboy/countryish voice. That's the "unfavorite" version.
