Title: The Flashback: My World
Post by: CherryGarcia on November 21, 2015, 11:06:30 AM
Am curious at the thoughts of the board on this little ditty. I think it's an interesting idea and would've worked as a longer track, amped up synth bass and with some guitars added.

Dizzy was asked in a interview if they were on acid when he and Axl made that

Dizzy wasn't involved in making My World:

Keyboards, Drums, Effects: Axl, Johann Langlie
Vocals: Axl

Erm... definitely one of those "What the hell was he thinking?" ones for me.  As far as I'm concerned it is utter drivel with no redeeming features whatsoever.

I consider some peoples' posts utter drivel with no redeeming features whatsoever, but I really like My World.

Aren't opinions great? :D

Already discussed recently here:

You sure do love the attention you get from starting new topics .

BBA?......I think it is neat....should NOT have been on the album....it would be an interesting B-side.

It's an interesting track I think. UYI albums threw a lot of different musical ideas about. Was interesting hearing stuff like this from a band like Guns n' Roses. Bands sometimes get criticised when they try different things and change the format. Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, U2... GnR. Some people don't like that band playing a different style song. It's not a song I'd put on right away but I dig it at the end of that album. It's dirty

I was surprised when I heard it the first time.

But it shows how Axl was already into the use of synthesizers and so on already back then.

It's always funny reading people go on about how Axl wanted to go industrial and/or electronic with Chinese Democracy. There is an earlier example of that.  :hihi:

Given that this is a discussion forum, can we not just assume that pretty much anything written here is going be opinions and subjective and all the rest of it?  Can we not just take that as read?  Is it something that needs pointed out whenever something critical is said?

Axl was into industrial before a lot of his peers on the hard rock scene. I remember I think it was one of the Metallica guys saying Axl was playing them NiN and they were still listening to Slayer...some quote along those lines, but he had his ear to the ground with whatever was new and hot in music, at least in the 80s and 90s. He was promoting Soundgarden and Faith No More even before the 'grunge' era started...As early as 1989 he was saying "Faith No More is the future of rock music."

Nine Inch Nails opened for GN'R at two shows in Europe in August 1991. Way before their big breakthrough.

Axl was wearing a NIN shirt at shows in 1991 as well.

He always wanted to do a project with Trent Reznor and Dave Navarro. That's one of the things I wish would've happened. Axl, Trent Reznor and Dave Navarro collaborating on a project would've been killer. He also said around '93 he had a big urge to hear Dave and Slash together:

"Trent Reznor from NIN is one [guy I want to work with], and Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction is another... I've talked to Trent about working with me on an industrial synth project, at least on one song, and I definitely want to work with Dave on something. I've always been curious what he would sound like working with Slash on something."  (Axl, Hit Parader, 1993)

Great find.  Also, this has to be one of the best quotes ever.

?They were there to rock; what they didn't want was some homo-looking dudes playing noisy synths and they made that very clear to us. There were thousands of people standing there going [raises middle finger] and there were bits of sausage on the stage. I've tried to block it out."

NIN as a band was really different to the other opening act, Skid Row.

Maybe a few years later in like 1992-3 it would've worked better.

But yeah, just shows that Axl was into that kind of stuff even before people started talking about how he wants to go industrial, techno or disco....

That happened to GNR in 2006 at the metal fest I went to see. :(
It was also a shame cause they where great.

interesting track because it's the last of the last albums of the old band.
it's really short so when I want to listen to it I do it in repeat mode.

curious about the lyrics, I wondered if it was a hint at the future sound of the band, or a solo Axl LP.

I think My World is so awful and cheesy that it?s funny.
But it really couldn?t seem more out of place on the Illusions.
I think if anywhere, it should have been on an Axl solo album, since it?s basically an Axl song.
or maybe a hidden track, that you have to fast forward a few minutes to get to.
Basically a courtesy buffer to give listeners time to safely turn the player off before My World begins.

A very small gripe, but always felt the the track order on UYI II could have used some tweaking.
I always considered My World to be a joke, sort of making Don?t Cry (alt lyrics) the last song on the album.
As much as I like Don?t Cry, it?s not the most effective closer. Estranged or YCBM might have made more sense.

I think My World is great. First time i heard it i thought that there was something wrong with my cassette  ;D

Its a great finish to the Illusion, it creeps you out nicely :P.

Axl also wore a NIN shirt in the 1992 Tokyo dvd/vhs during You Could Be Mine.

Always my feeling too.  Just a total joke of a "song".  And what was the point?

As for NIN not being enthusiastically received, keep in mind this was 1991.  NIN wasn't anywhere near what they would become, and frankly, neither was that genre.

If I'm not mistaken, things didn't do much better for Soundgarden in late 1991/early 1992.  Same reasons.

Q: - What the hell was My World?  lol (I've always been curious)

A: Great question and here goes for all your inquisitive minds with a bit you aren?t aware of but is the real story?

Unfinished 1st run 1st dabbling/experimenting all in fun demo that became Duff?s favorite song at the time telling me how he loved to blast it at his house with Ice T and the Bodycount guys before Illusions came out and before it was decided to be on the record. I wanted to try and develop it and wanted guitars of some kind but Slash felt and his words at the Record Plant in all seriousness were ?It?s perfect? and Slash and Duff were the deciding factor to have it on the album. :O

Personally I feel Duff legitimately liked it but I can?t say Slash did in the same way. In fact I feel he was keenly aware some would take issue with the track and against me so for him in that sense it was ?perfect?.  Imo Duff wasn?t aware or part of that and was ?used? unwittingly for support in talking me out of developing it or not including it which at the time I had no real intention of using as is.

All I found about NIN opening for GNR were two dates.

I read that NIN did 4 dates in Germany, 1 with GNR and 3 were club dates.

They met up with GNR again at Wembley, which was also Izzy's last show as an official member. All I found was a bootleg and this (for the VMAs, maybe Skid Row and NIN footage exists?)

Yeah, I don't think you really got the point there, Emily.

I think you are missing the point as well, he clearly said that any 10 year old child with a computer could make a comparable song to My World, so I asked for proof.

You then go off on your usual tangent, and ask if he can create it under Axl's name, which is a pretty bizarre request-
But I'm sure you had your usual anti-Axl Agenda in mind.

Next time you decide to white knight and play keyboard warrior for someone else, at least have a valid approach in mind.  :-*

Always the same boring stuff...When you have to defend mr Rose it's always the same old story... My World is nothing more than a filler, wanted or not. If you don't understand that it was a fun thing from mr Rose, if you don't understand that 1:34 min song with 20 secs of lyrics on it is nothing more than a joke, well, you should enlarge your musical panorama, really.

It?s just raw expression ? just putting ideas together. We just go in, say ?what do we want to do? and get to work. We completed My World in three hours. It?s something that I need to get out of my system, but it?s not something I want to base my career and future on."
