They are always my band of the year and especially this year after the joyous time I had in Vegas. However I'm not sure they have been active enough to win this- especially as it's a UK publication. My Money is on Black Sabbath. Their comeback has been pretty special. The Album rocked.

Not hating here, but what did the band do in 2014 to be considered band of the year?  12 shows in SA, Vegas residency and a dvd release to me don't equal enough to be considered band of the year.  Don't get me wrong, they are the band of my life, but just not sure 2014 was the most appropriate year for this.

I think probably The Black Keys or Sabbath deserve it this year, both releasing albums. Sabbath's (13) was even highly successful. The presence of so many oldies acts is however a bit depressing: 'Sabbath, GN'R, Metallica, Queen, Maiden'' - this list could have been compiled in the 80s! Where is the next generation of rock bands, in the classic blues based tradition, coming from?

Tour in South America, tour in USA, residency in Las Vegas, Golden Gods performance, Axl Rose gets props for his vocal range, Duff rejoins the band for shows, Axl gets Golden Gods award, Axl and giraffe "controversy", "Axl vs RHCP Superbowl show", Appetite For Democracy released...


The band and Axl's been in the public eye for quite a bit this year.....

The only one of those things I saw talked about outside these boards was the Axl's vocal range thing, which was all over the net.

Not disputing they had an active year by GNR standards, but not really sure they had the world talking.

Ok Debbie Downer, but maybe the rest of the world doesn't matter since the nominating was done by Classic Rock magazine.....

Many of the things I listed could be things that kind of magazine might actually write about.

But you introduced the "in the public eye" part.  Other that the Axl vocal thing, which was all over the place, what else was all that public?

I know around here we like to equate the Golden Gods with the Grammys, but in actual fact, most people don't even know they are a thing.

I would think that is the first requirement.

It is a depressing list really: from those acts, the only bands to have recently released albums are Sabbath and The Black Keys. Metallica are going through a rather strange 'Guns N' Roses' phrase of, not really showing much inclination on entering the studio basically (ironically, their last 'proper' studio album was released the same year as Chinese Democracy); if you go on the Metallica official board, their fanbase are pelting them with the same sort of abuse, Axl receives. In Maiden's defense their last album was just 2010 and they have had a lot of live dvds and things to keep the fans happy but it is still essentially an 'old farts' list.

Yeah, someone linked a Metallica forum over at MYGNR, or one of the other GNR sites.  It sounded like us. 

Well, mostly like us.  In their case, just about everybody over there was unhappy.  There was no contingent telling them how good they actually have it or to go follow some other band if they don't like it.

Many of those things were reported by mainstream media.

The difference is they had Lulu (which is perhaps a mixed blessing!) and Beyond Magnetic. They also have had a number of film/dvd projects. They also played a new song live, Lords of the Summer, but do not seem to be in a hurry to record the thing. It has just been a case of aimless touring really (much like Guns). The fans are restless.

So it's obvious "Band of the Year" isn't album of the year.

Time to drop that grievance and try to be positive about the nomination now. Too much to ask?

Hey I voted (for Guns n Roses in case that wasn't obvious).  Is that positive enough?  : ok:

No grievance exists. I merely voted for someone other than Guns N' Roses because I believe they have had a superior year to Guns N' Roses. You have to remember, the bands that have released albums (Sabbath and the Black Keys) are playing live also, except, they are doing so in support of a new album.

Yet I am sure all the 'positive people' on Metallica's forum will be voting for Metallica and all the positive fans of Maiden will be voting for Maiden. What then is the point in these polls if everyone is simply voting in mindless fan blocs? I personally voted for the band who I thought, most deserved it.

Usually the positive fans want "their" band to succeed. That's what I read on the Internet, so it must be true.

If that's the case, wouldn't it mean they'd vote for their band in polls such as this one?

I rather agree with Jarmo.

Truth be told, I tend to vote for my favorites.  I'm a huge Roger Federer fan.  And before every Grand Slam, ESPN puts up a poll on a winner.  And I vote for Roger, almost regardless.

Yes but ''band of the year'' is the title of the poll, not ''favourite band ever''. Also, by fans from the forums bloc voting for their favourites, it renders the outcome somewhat invalid. The outcome merely reflects the number and persistency of each respective fan base, not a true reflection on, who has had, the best year.

But could you vote for Roger in a poll, ''tennis player of the year'', if he was low in the seedings and ended the year without a grand slam to his credit? 

Hmm, that's a good point.

For that one, I do vote for the guy that truly had the best year overall.

Most of these polls are just cases of which artist has the most active fans.

Somebody decided GN'R was worthy of being nominated, so therefore it's safe to assume it's ok to vote for them without having to feel guilty about it.  : ok:
