Title: Axl giving the die hard fans their dream! What is greatest set list ever?
Post by: gunsbetterthanever on June 07, 2014, 11:46:32 AM
Okay, so after 4 years, a major change in the setlist.  Singing Yesterdays has to be a dream for more than me.  Prostitute, Used to Love her, and TWAT, plus civil war.  Even riff raff.  Plus Axl left all the other songs in the list.  When you look at last night's setlist, is it not the best set list of all time?  Thoughts?

This is number one for me.  Especially since his voice is $$$ right now.

I thought Prostitute last night was as good as any song he sings live.  I am blown away by the power at 3:00 and 4:20

Yeah...  I don't think that will happen.  That's Slash's.
I would love to hear COMA!

That's why they don't play any of the classics, cos they are slash's... Get real won't you, when NR is playing and the solo starts, the iconic image of slash on the piano strumming his stuff doesn't enter your head? The two are inseparable... Everybody knows this. Slash is a major part of the set-list, saying it isn't so is BS. And Axl knows it. Its no different when Miles sings PC, sure he might have wished he wrote it but everybody know he didn't.

The truth is everybody has history, you either accept it and move on or try and forget it and bury it. Coma in my view, isn't played because having seen live recordings of it show that it fucks Axl to sing it. In the studio, in theory you could sing one syllable a month and eventually you could get it pitch perfect, live no such luxuryv ;)

Really?  I disagree.

The June 1991 version in Cleveland is a little ragged, but so is a lot of that tour.

But 2.19.92 in Tokyo?  4.9.92 in Chicago?  Both very solid.  Axl nails it, even the long passage at the end.

4.10.93 in Omaha is also good.  That's the one that wound up on the Japanese 'Live Era'.  I know a lot of 'Live Era' is comically enhanced in studio after the fact, but I actually felt that track sounded very natural.  And again, a very solid performance.

Coma is not avoided because it's one or the other's..it's avoided because it's not the best fit for a live show (Humble opinion, of course)

Personally, Coma is some of my favorite of Axl's singing of any song ever

I got to see Coma in Chicago in 92 and it was phenominal! I always figured it wasn't played more because it's difficult to sing live.

With all the stops and starts and tempo changes, I'm sure its not easy.

I just always thought they were pretty good at it.  And I could see a whole production with video screens.  Guy on a gurney, doctors looking over him, etc.

No doubt...that would be phenominal! It's such an epic tune!

2 sets, no encores, do away with WTTJ, SCOM, and PC. First song would be Night Train, last song would be Coma.

I bet they do Coma again at some point.  He pulls out some UYI tracks each tour.  In 2006, Don't Cry was not played, but now it is.  Estranged also.  Then Civil war in Nashville.  Then with Izzy 14 years.  Yesterdays......I guess my whining about setlists doesnt look too good now.

Axl on these last few shows was about as good as we could ask for.  SO thankful.

UYI stuff is cool and I'm glad it shows up, but I want Axl to press forward with what he was doing with the new band, get more Chinese Democracy tracks in there, unreleased stuff that hasn't seen the light of day, something to push the whole idea of the new band forward.

People would have a fit.  Bet you 70% or higher comes for just those songs!

Hell if were entering wish land here.....imagine they played CD from start to finish and then walked off.....I'de pay double to see that, but next tour I want my Rocket Queen, Estranged, etc. back in the mix....

KOHD was ok in the 90's when their "new" live version with different chords, reggae time etc sounded fresh and enjoyable (the UYI version wasn't that good) . But fuckin with the original version of the song for about 12-13 min or even more is just too much in 2014  ;D. LALD is good but not that great, imho. If it weren't for the pyros and axl's scream you wouldn't even notice that song was played at the shows  ;D.

The setlist is straight but you can even put here and there some song  ;D. That's just the core =D

I agree on the lenght of it. It's too long, but Axl's creative voice-acrobatics makes it a must to me. The diferent tonalities he added to it from 06 and on is simply godlike and is (arguably) the whole point of listening to the gnr-version of it.

It is a good song, but yeah; Axl's screaming on it is basicly the main reason.

Probably gonna get h8 for this, but I hate PC :hihi: Also would have added shacklers revenge in the set.

btw, <3 the lald-intro from rio06

If he did a Vegas residency again and one of the shows was "One time only: Chinese Democracy in its entirety, special guests Brain Mantia and Buckethead", it would be interesting to see what ticket sales would be.

Okay, here's my dream setlist....played by all members who were once part of GnR. So played by the artist that performed it on the recording:

Welcome To The Jungle (nothing better than that opening riff getting you pumped)
It's So Easy
You Could Be Mine

Dust N Bones
Bad Obsession
You're Crazy
Pretty Tied Up
14 Years
Sweet Child O Mine
Breakdown (am I the only who likes this song?)
Civil War

Don't Cry
November Rain
Estranged
Coma

Chinese Democracy
Attitude
So Fine
Better
Ain't It Fun

One In A Million (I'd kill for this one to be played live - and no, I do not agree with its lyrics, it's just an extremely powerful song)
Patience
Dead Horse
Street of Dreams

There Was A Time
Since I Don't Have You
Catcher In The Rye

Rocket Queen
Paradise City

One In A Million (I'd kill for this one to be played live - and no, I do not agree with its lyrics, it's just an extremely powerful song)

It's a misunderstood song imo. It questions a societal matter and has strong language. Also wanna hear it again (not gonna happen I am pretty sure tho) cause the song is pretty good musicly. Axl at the end...:headbanger:

Breakdown (am I the only who likes this song?)

No :smoking:

Coma

You gonna give Axl a heart-attack :hihi:

Would be a good song for the band, but imo he didn't do this song justice live in the 90' so not sure if it would work.

I think it's a misunderstood song (One In A Million), but it lays bare the fact that Axl was just a 'white boy' learning how the world works. I would love to learn his current opinion on this song.... Buy yeah, One In A Million is the only song in the world that makes me feel like I am not the only one who struggles with all this shit you get thrown at you every day.....Therefore, I love it.

If I were allowed to choose a set list for one night here is my dream setlist.  This is also considering that I have seen the band a bunch of times already, if it were my first or second GNR show my setlist would look nothing like this.

Pretty Tied Up
Shacklers Revenge
Back off Bitch
If The World
Rhiad N The Bedouins
Yesterdays
Right Next Door to hell
Locomotive
Oh My God
Prostitute
Breakdown
Perfect Crime
Dont Damn Me
Dust N Bones
Shotgun Blues
Bad Apples
Dead Horse
Garden of Eden
Reckless Life

Encore

There Was A Time
Coma
Get In The Ring

I just listened to Coma about 5 times in a row.  If I ever saw that LIVE and they pulled it off....man I might die.  Such an epic song.  They must have known it wasn't a touring song when they recorded it.
