Have not posted since I went to GNR Miami 2012 at Gleason "Up Close and Personal, but I have followed everything on the site for years.  I love waiting for the show updates.   It allows us to feel like we are there at times.  Thanks for all the posts everybody....Greatest Rock Band ever and they are still a BAND!  Axl is the best ever.  He is worth so much money and he still tours.  He does it for the fans.  No hate to the people who complain either.  I understand how they yearn for Axl to be perfect and change set lists every night...etc.  I really understand the point of view of all opinions.  It is what makes this site the best!  So, I am sitting here in Miami waiting for the setlist and imagining what it is like there.  Sometimes that excitement is better than the actual you tube vids.  LOL

Have a great time all of you who are at the show....

Eu amo o Brasil

My spelling is awful so I just try to copy EXACTLY what Jarmo posts but sometimes I get confused.  He wrote "Bras" on his update.  I thought he meant girls were throwing their bras onto the stage but turns out "Bras" is short for Brasilia!!!  :hihi:

looks like each show is getting longer than the last- they have gone from 16-21 songs already, following a similar pattern as 2009 when they started off in Mexico with a short show & gradually added songs as the GnR train got rolling- that is Axl's voice gets stronger & the band gets tighter- I would expect to see more & more songs popping up & being the perfectionist AxL is, we will prolly hear those new songs when he feels they can nail them  : ok:

Yeah the crowds there are impressive... GNR clearly has a stranglehold on this country...

is it because of Axl's people are from there? im sure that s a small part of it, and maybe because GNR has been a big part of Rock N rio's history too, but i wonder why there GNR is so big compared to other places

As far for the interview...

The reporter started saying it's a diferent line-up and that Axl doesn't look like the trouble maker he once was haha. They talk about ''Sweet Child'' being the most famous song of the band, the record sales for Appetite.

DJ Ashba: ''I'ts amazing to know that 80% of the crowd doesn't speak english even though they sing every song.'' He says Bras?lia is the rock capital.

Axl:''It's always good to be in Brazil. The crowd is always passionate and welcoming.'' Then he says jokingly:"The crowd knows the songs better than I do''. At the end Axl says is good to be back on the road.

Dizzy: Thanks the brazilian fans for maitainig the rock alive.

That's basically it guys.

Some additional notes:

Tommy is introduced as Tommy Rotten Stinson.

Axl says Dizzy's solo is his own composition.

At the end of Catcher Axl says his moves makes him think of the Muppets and part of the theme is played by Bumblefoot.

Jam before November Rain features "Babe I'm gonna leave you", made famous by Led Zeppelin.

Heaven's Door is dedicated to Beta's dad.

. True however " Scraped" live does not sound nearly as good as "Sorry" "Better" "Maddy" "TIL" & "ITW" which always sound killer live & really hope "ITW" makes it back in the reg rotation- love it live!

I think Chinese Democracy is the best song to open a gig. It was always one of my favorites highlights, with the pyros...the scream...and Ashba over the drums. Very powerfull song  8)

Funny, cause I think CD is a killer opener!  The beginning music gets me pumped...  As far as set list, it is a winless battle.  When you think of Axl in 1997, would you ever have imagined he would be playing a setlist like last night in 2014???
It is almost a miracle that the band is as good as they are, and how about the crowd???
I wish American crowds were as into it.
In Miami, so many people sit through the show.
I don't know how they can stay in their seat.  The energy axl still brings is incredible.  I wish his voice was as raspy as it was back in the day or in 2010, but it seems as if he chooses when to bellow it out and when to sing, example...end of paradise city when he screams..."hommmmmmmmmmmeeeeeee.. Yeahhh"

Love GNR!  Dying to see Civil on you tube.... Anybody???
Lol

Really glad to see Civil War back in the mix... always seems to be a song that nobody dislikes

5 CD songs is great too... they cant play enough of that record!
. True however " Scraped" live does not sound nearly as good as "Sorry" "Better" "Maddy" "TIL" & "ITW" which always sound killer live & really hope "ITW" makes it back in the reg rotation- love it live!

i love all those songs... but they almost never play scraped if ever right?

and i know im gunna get slaughtered for this... but the track Chinese Democracy is the weakest song on the album... i dont know why they open the show with it....

but i guess it means something to Axl

I think Chinese Democracy is the best song to open a gig. It was always one of my favorites highlights, with the pyros...the scream...and Ashba over the drums. Very powerfull song  8)

ha yeah obviously its subjective ... like the pyro and stuff.... but not the song lol

Sadly, I think the overlong delay and excessive tweaking hurt this particular track on the album track we wound up with.

People over on the 'other' GnR sites are being pretty negative but that WTTJ video was awesome, let's be honest, if you weren't there, don't you wish you had been?

God I need this band back in the uk ASAP!

And CD is the perfect opener, seen em live 4 times now and when the lights go down and you heard the twang of DJs guitar and then POW! Lights on and there he is! 'Don't really matter!' - awesome!

It should be taken with a grain of salt, absolutely.

Often times, that place can be as over the top negative as this place can be all sunshine and rainbows.

The best bet, I've found, is to never fully commit to either position.  Both are pretty unrealistic.

Ali
.  Yeah the way Axl's voice sounds varies a lot- if u r to close it sails over u completely sometimes depending on how high the stage is & often there is a wall of sound created where u can't hear a anything clearly- there is always a "sweet" spot that u gotta trade for being close- YouTube is nearly impossible to determine how he sounds- way to many variables- but I know one thing; in London- the show with Duff- I was up against the barrier with a low stage right in front of Duff when he appeared & AxL's voice was so fuckin powerful & he held notes ridiculously long for over 3 hrs- Incredible! Still gives me goosebumps thinking about Axl's voice ripping me in half! It's nearly impossible tho unless ur there to know what he sounds like unless he is sick or just plain awful that nite- but when he is on & ur in the right spot it's fuckin unreal! :smoking:

From what I could hear of Jungle, it sounded fine.  The only thing is that during the 2nd (?) verse, it sounded like he could use a bit more breath support.  But, otherwise, I thought it was fine.  Certainly not as bad as some have made it out to be.

Great setlist! The videos look great, and I think Axl's voice is more than good!

My 6-show jorney starts tomorrow at Sao Paulo! Will attend Sao Paulo, Curitiba, Florianopolis, Porto Alegre, Buenos Aires and La Paz! Give me a setlist like this and I'll be eating from the band's hand!

I still love the original 'Chinese Democracy' we got at RIR III.  Its a tight, 3 minute rocker.  That's the version I put on playlists.

Sadly, I think the overlong delay and excessive tweaking hurt this particular track on the album track we wound up with.

I agree with you, but it's still one of the highlights of the set and one of the best rockers in the GNR catalogue.

Also, I really really want this band to play Riad. I'm sorry if i'm repetitive, but Riad is a colossal song that GNR is not exploding live.

I think CD is a solid rock song with blazing guitar work but not in the same league awesome as Nightrain, OTGM, Jungle etc.off Appetite but other than YCBM off UYI, CD's rockers like Rhiad, Better, CD, Scraped are better than rockers what the UYI's have to offer, but they have many incredible epic tunes like Estranged & Civil War

I have a few DVDs from 2002 shows where the band plays Rhiad, it just doesn't translate to well live- that's prolly why they don't play it- it's got a great angry agressive vibe & AXL sounds awesome on the CD tho

You see what you want to see.

I have several comments in this very thread that are both positive and refuting some of the complaints.  Hell, in one I even said I was wrong and perhaps a bit unfair initially.

But, naturally, you don't want to talk about those.

To paraphrase the big chief, I guess its "cool" to only focus on the stuff you don't like.

I think Axl is too old to give us the rasp he once had.  I am impressed that he can sing all of the same songs in key.  Most artists at his age need to either retire, or they cannot hit the high notes.  He hits every note still.  He just is not as strong a singer as he was at 28.  The youtube vids do not do him justice either.  Civil War from the other night sounds pretty awesome.  Also, when you think of the setlist, the first 4 songs he sings close to perfection!  It is a great first 4 to start the show off.  So much energy.  that setlist from Brasilia was an awesome order of song selection.  Not sure what else Axl can give at this point.  I happen to love his voice today.  He still puts on a dream show.  I truly never thought I would see Axl still rocking out in his 50's!

He's not.

I think its just that his "hook", which was that rasp in his voice, was so distinct that it sounds so different now.

CD, ISE, MB all seem like easier vocal tracks and make sense played early.

The outlier is WTTJ.  That's a tough second song.

No, the point being made is that he's trying to shut down a conversation he doesn't want to have.

I'm not really trying to compare the two.  I'm trying to establish that you don't need a ticket stub to weigh in.

And that your goto retort to anyone telling you something you don't want to hear is not to try and big time them.

Well, if he was wanted to shut down the conversation, I think he could literally shut down the conversation or thread, as it were.  He hasn't done that, though.

Regardless, I think there are degrees.  A soundboard recording would be much clearer and higher quality from an audio perspective, and a much more informed position from which to state an opinion on the performance.  But, a lot of these videos in the threads on recent shows are audience recordings, which are always variable in quality.  So, there is value in actually being there, especially when talking about a show in is totality.

And I can roll with all that.  All very reasonable.

But...since the reality is that we are fans spread out all over the world, the lion's share of the time, we are going off videos that people post.

And I've never seen anyone that linked a video and labeled it out of this world be told they can't go by that.  Have you?

No, not if it's good quality.  But, honestly, some of these audience recordings are pinched and it's hard to even hear over the crowd screaming some times.

Ok fine.  But there are people who were at the show, and have commented on here that Axl sounded "ok", the show started late, and fans were booing.  That's not really a ringing endorsement.  Where's the response to those comments?  Are they just disregarded because they also had a good time?

Late...really, are we going there?

Whenever the band before GNR gets off, DO NOT expect GNR to jump on stage.
We all know it's gonna be an hour.  Go get a drink, washroom, smoke, whatever....

If you want punctuality and a 7pm start try Chicago.
They even do a 20 minute intermission half way through their set.
Don't ask why or how I know this....lol

Late...really, are we going there?

Whenever the band before GNR gets off, DO NOT expect GNR to jump on stage.
We all know it's gonna be an hour.  Go get a drink, washroom, smoke, whatever....

If you want punctuality and a 7pm start try Chicago.
They even do a 20 minute intermission half way through their set.
Don't ask why or how I know this....lol

I think it was closer to two hours, but that's not my point (I've been to several Guns shows, they've always been late, but whatever, more beer for me).  My point has more to do with the fact that we're constantly reminded that our critiques are worthless because we weren't at the show, but yet critiques from people that were at the show get ignored and disregarded.

Also, I'll assume a friend told you about the Chicago intermission (wink).

Ok fine.  But there are people who were at the show, and have commented on here that Axl sounded "ok", the show started late, and fans were booing.  That's not really a ringing endorsement.  Where's the response to those comments?  Are they just disregarded because they also had a good time?

Okay let me start with the started late/fans booing...and I'm guessing you've been to at least one show ...  Any GNR fan who has 'followed' the band FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME between say 25 years ago up to the last tour, has to be fully aware of the strong possibility that the band won't hit the stage anywhere from like 1 to 3 hours AFTER the opening acts finish.  During the change-over time, the fans get restless or whatever and boo.  Now it doesn't matter if it's only takes an hour, some fans are going to start booing the second the opening acts finish (sometimes even while they're still on).  Anyways.....  Intro starts.  Booing stops.  Axl hits the stage.  Fans go insane with excitement.

Fans coming away from a show saying they had a good time obviously is what you'd hope for at the end of the day.

Some fans coming away saying they thought Axl sounded "ok" is fine because that's their opinion.  You're never going to get a 100% ringing endorsement.  People are looking for different things when they go to any show.  But I'd bet you a dime to a dollar if you asked those same people if they'd attend another show if they had the opportunity, 99% of those people are there with (cow) bells on!!!  ;D

Yeah all three of those MSG shows, def was a blast, I bought tix for the first show 12-9-91, and scalped the 10th and 13th and waited out the scalpers, lol I didn't buy till almost 11pm, and they thought they were getting over on me! Selling me the tix for half face value, and GNR hadn't even gone on yet.lol But yeah each show was amazing. I look forward to a decent pro-sound recording of this Brasilia show.

Jarmo ive been in 3 gnr shows, Madrid 2006 and 2010 and Mallorca 2012 and the voice was different in 2010 than 2012,in youtube,at staduim and in the moon.

Axl is not singing like 2010,or like he used to sing. Most of the songs were recorded with rasp, you can sing it without rasp but its pretty obvius that would not sound the same.

I really enjoyed 2006/2010 gigs and 2012 i realized how weak he was sounding

Checkout the setlist from the 91' Greensboro show-my first. It was about a month before the UYI's came out so we were hearing most of songs for the first time  & they played almost almost all of them- also played 9 of 12 from Appetite. At the time it was their longest- they had 4 separate encore performances, the last of which only a couple of hundred people were left cause they were sure the show was finally over including myself who was nearly out the arena door when I heard Axl say "Greensboro come on down!"  & a select few were treated to an up close & personal performance of PC. Had to pinch myself.  I Was seated in the rafters &  was now a couple of feet from this band that I fell in love with on MTV. I love the new band & shows but that experience will never be topped-thank god I saw that line up at least once! :smoking:

.  Ur absolutely right- I have not seen an official setlist or any info posted anywhere other than MTV at the time saying it was the longest show they had played the next day (later that day) I also have tons of bootlegs from shows around that time & I have seen no footage whatsoever & it was before the age of Internet/ forums so I have not heard of anyone else who was there. But yeah it was fuckin Heavenly- I was stunned with how much energy they all had- Slash was Criss- crossing the stage leaping off 5ft ramps while playing all nite & Axl was just insanely awesome- Izzy was still in the band also- it was amazing hearing songs like Double Talkin Jive- Coma- Estranged- Breakdown & Perfect Crime to name a few, for the 1st time. I felt so bad for a number of people that got tossed out after Skid Row for fighting since they were to drunk to handle waitin 2+ hrs for GnR - yeah Heavenly for sure - it was the fuckin ultimate concert experience!

There is no objective analysis of his vocals between now and then and not see a drop off.  Its just not possible.

Now, if you want to get into how you can still live with it, fine.  That's a different argument, one of rationalization.  That's something each individual needs to do and make their own peace with.

But you sound like a fool trying to say there is no change evident here.

His voice now is not even close to some shows from 2006-2010.
However, NO youtube clip captures what it is like to be there.  For some reason, when you are there, his voice sounds way better than on youtube.  Even now, if you are there, how well he sings is not as important as the energy of the show.  But I would not be able to say his voice was not sick in 2010 London compared to 2012 London.

I love Axl and am thankful for him continuously touring for the last 5 years.  I do wish to hear some of the old axl, but I have not seen that.  I will take his voice now and getting to see him over not touring any day though!

If its not surprising that his voice isn't what it used to be (I'm not saying that, I'm not at the show), then why are we forever discussing this?  What is your need for everyone to agree?

Was the 2006 show recorded with the same phone in the same environment with the same crowd members?  Its not possible to compare.
You can watch the exact same performnce of a song recorded by two individuals and it can sound totally different!  Yes or NO?

If someone fucks up a verse, then Yes we can say a verse was fucked up (God forbid!), but these endless tone discussions are a bit monotonous and silly.

Do we all need to wait for tonight?s show and then watch the YouTube clips of a 2.5 hour concert searching high and low for a missed note to discuss at nausea tomorrow?

At least the setlist discussions (as silly as we got) were about wether a song was or wasn't performed.

Couldn't you just as easily turn that around though?

If anyone dares say he doesn't sound good, that comment gets stomped on like a fire you are trying to put out.  Is that not the same thing you are describing, trying to get everyone to agree?

It seems to me that most of the talk about his voice are in response to people telling us all is well.  Its a reaction and a counterpoint to what is given to us.

Bottom line is that people don't post videos here and start out "wow, he sounds like shit".  That happens elsewhere.  Not here.

But if people want to start down the road that he sounds awesome, just look at this clip you stupid ungrateful haters...you need to prepare yourself for possibility that not all the responses will be enthusiastic nods.

Step 1 we buy a ticket to the show.
Step 2 we attend the show.
Step 3 we give the show a personal rating out of a 100.
Step 4 we can discuss whether the show deserves a 84 or 87.
Step 5 we can agree to disagree and give it an 86.5.

Now what....?

I agree.  After Rio 2011, I thought it was over.  But how about Philly 2012.  And how come on Your Crazy, he is able to sing like 2010....  His voice is the most complex human instrument ever....
No one, and I mean no one can cover Axl and truly match him....Hopefully his voice gets stronger.
Jarmo, do you think Axl's voice right now is as good as 2010?

Title: Re: Bras?lia, DF, Brazil, March 25, 2014 updates
Post by: Ali on March 28, 2014, 03:52:50 PM
Personally, I will take the show I saw in 2011 over the show I saw in 1992 any day as far as Axl's vocals.  He did not have very good control of his voice back in '92, with little to no vibrato, and a tone that was so over-the-top in terms of raspiness, that even I found it abrasive.  His cleaner tone, while maybe not as appealing to many fans, is less abrasive to the ears.  In that sense, it is a welcome change for me.

I think he was as good in 2012 as in 2011 at the shows I saw in Vegas.  I'll see how he compares this year when I attend the shows in Vegas again.  It'll be at the same venue, so barring any changes in the mix the audience hears, it should make for as close to an apples-to-apples comparison as I could make.

Im talking about that you realize how the voice is in the show, yes it sounds weaker in youtube becuase you dont have a PA in home, but im talking about my experience in that 3 shows ive been, the last i can say i realize how he was singing, and sorry but is my opinion, i prefer him to sing like 2010 or 2006 rather than how is singing nowadays.

I dont know if he has a throat problem ,i think he has, there is videos of him showing pain while sreaming like that benefit show ( cant remember de name) and at the beggining of welcome to the jungle LA 2012 i think.

But for sure, something happened from 2010 to 2011,for the peaple who love that voice, good for you.I realy expect him someday to sing like 2010.

What show did you see in 1992?
GN'R and Metallica in Orlando at the Citrus Bowl.

In 2011, you think Paradise City and YCBM  sounded better than 92....Anyone else think this?  I do not see how.  SOunds like Denial.  Paradise in 2011 better than 92?...  I LOVE AXL and loved his shows in Miami in 2011 and 2012, but Paradise?  It was not like 2010 nor the old days.

No denial.  There is an uploaded PC from Indiana 1991 that you can listen to as an example.  That is an example of the type "over-the-top raspiness" that even I mentioned before that I found abrasive.

Oh, no way.

Not one performance since he came back holds a candle to his prime.  I mean, let's be honest.

I still think he sounded good in 2001, 2006-07, and 2009-10.  But even the best shows of those years can't really stand up to any number of shows from the glory years.

Agreed.

The summer of '91 tour had great setlists, but Axl sounded rough.  8.03.91 is the best setlist EVER, but his voice is shot by then.

But I think everything from December 1991 to July 1993 beats out anything since the relaunch.  Pick any old 'Paradise City' you like.

Back in the early nineties everyone used to talk about his voice and how it wasn't good at particular shows, so this is nothing new but give the guy a break. The people at the shows are clearly having an awesome time and at the end of the day they're the people that count, not us judging him on youtube!

They would be happy even Axl just standing and waving to them, while music goes from tape....

How come when many of us say we think His voice is as good or better than "back in the day" we are labeled as  in denial? I couldn't care less about just always saying Axl sounds awesome-as pointed out - his high rasp sounds awful at the riot show- sounds real rough on the UYI vids from Japan & is again horrible at times at the Ritz - I think his voice is way more powerful, holds notes longer & is just more listenable then back in the day. Of course his performance are no where near the energetic- psycho frantic- angry  pace & style he had back then. He has mellowed just a bit with age & yes slowed down- but in any case you can't take your eyes off him when he's on stage- for 30 years he has been giving it everything he has got up there & is ALWAYS ELECTRIFYING! That I think we can all agree upon

If he did mean that, he should go and burn all of his GN'R CDs.

First off, NCrazy didn't say or suggest that in any way, shape or form.

Second, why do all you negative ninnies think that the rest of us can't totally enjoy GNR in 2014 and 1986 GNR and everything in between?  ::)

NCrazy didn't say it.  D-GenerationX did (even though it had absolutely nothing to do with what NCrazy was saying).

If someone says something positive about GNR 2014, people like D-GenerationX and others twists it into something it ain't.

If someone says something positive about GNR 2014, people like D-GenerationX and others twists it into something it ain't.

So there was some other way to take this :

Quote
How come when many of us say we think His voice is as good or better than "back in the day" we are labeled as  in denial? I couldn't care less about just always saying Axl sounds awesome-as pointed out - his high rasp sounds awful at the riot show- sounds real rough on the UYI vids from Japan & is again horrible at times at the Ritz - I think his voice is way more powerful, holds notes longer & is just more listenable then back in the day.

Come on now.

But this is exactly what I was talking about in the another thread.

No one comes here and just posts "wow, Axl sucks."  All my devious twisting is in response to someone else's comment.

He asks why people think he's in denial.  Well, its right there.  That is why.  Suggesting his voice is more powerful and just more listenable now versus then is going to get you that sort of label.  That will be the extreme minority opinion from now until the end of time.

But it was also pointed out how there were just as many criticisms (vocals & music) of live performances back in the day as there are today.

I'd bet if you listened back to the '88 Ritz and '92 Tokyo shows, you can find 20 seconds of the band being "off" in your opinion too!  ;)

Thanks for proving NCrazy's point so quickly!  : ok:

Absolutely! You did prove my exact point very quickly indeed- You took my words an immediately jumped a mile the wrong direction - Ya I am burning my Old Gnr CDs now because this weeks shows make those pale in comparison- WTF Dude? Where the hell did u get that from? It's pretty funny a actually because that Ritz Show on MTV in 88' was the first time I had ever seen GnR Live in any capacity- I was so shocked, amazed & inspired by what I was seeing & hearing on that stage - I was blown away by the intensity emanating from The entire band but especially Axl- I lived in a small, very boring town at the time but I had about half the show on Vhs that I must have blasted from the big screen TV hundreds of times just to get a feel for that intensity & excitement missing from my life even just from a lousy VHS over just a TV. It made me feel alive & established what would be now about a 30 year love for being entertained by my favorite Lead singer & best songs of all time. But yeah, I noticed Axl was losing his voice a lot & was  not anywhere near pulling off how incredible he sounds on Appetite. I have many DVDs & have been to shows in both eras & I wittohout a doubt prefer his style of SINGING from between 2006-2012- havent really heard much of 2014 to have an opinion. I was absolutely fucking floored & still in mind blowing awe of what I witnessed in London 2010 as well as Greensboro 06'. In no way shape or form did I say that I have not been astonished & massively entertained & inspired by my favorite singer- band & songs for the last 25 or so years so stop twisting my fucking words for your own baffling reasons please! Btw; u still didn't answer my question
