Neil Young, Guns N? Roses Lead 2012 Bridge School Benefit Concert Lineup

Neil Young continues to draw the best in music for his annual Bridge School Benefit. Now in its 26th year, the benefit will feature Young and his band Crazy Horse headlining both nights, with primary support from Guns N? Roses and Jack White.

The lineup was revealed late Friday night (Sept. 7), with Young, White, and GNR also being joined by the Flaming Lips, Sarah McLachlan, Foster the People, Lucinda Williams, Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, k.d. lang and Siss Boom Bang, and Gary Clark Jr. on the bill.

The organization posted a video featuring some of the students at the Bridge School using their language technology to reveal the participants in the year?s event. The non-profit organization?s goal is to ensure that youths with severe speech and physical impairments achieve full participation in their communities through the use of augmentative and alternate means of communication and assistive technology applications.

The lineup was revealed once donations reached $10.000. Additional donations can be made for the Bridge School here. This year?s event takes place Oct. 20 and 21 in Hillsborough, Calif. Ticketing details will be announced soon.

Man I love Axl and GNR!! I know Axl has mentioned before that doing benefits for some artists is more for the publicity. And that is probably why he has stayed away from them. Sticking too private donations.  But I so love that they choose too be part of this. I am wondering if Mr. Jack White didn't have something to do with asking them to take part. I would so love to see this. I know it has been aired on tv a time or two. That would be great! And a big Thank You too Neil for all his dedication too this cause!

We've been to some Bridge shows previously; the performers do a generally 'unplugged' set and there's a lot of guest jamming.  The only thing I'm a little concerned about is that there are kids from the school seated on the stage the whole show...will this inhibit Axl?!?  I presume that they will be last or nearly last so hopefully the young'ns will be in bed by then!  I betcha BOTH Jack White and Neil Young will jam with GnR!!

He has special needs kids right on stage with him, that can be overwhelming for some people. GNR's not headlining, and it's not going to be a full set. When Metallica played, they broke out a bunch of cover songs to start off with, then did some of their songs. Reznor had some kids playing strings on a mostly "Fragile" set. It could be a setlist of songs Axl's never done, and we don't know if someone like Izzy or even Neil will be making a guest appearance. Brain's a SF guy, so he might join in on percussion with Frank, and if Lars isn't touring with Metallica, could also show up. Hopefully Axl's in the loose knit spirit of things and not being a "cinnamon girl" about it.

I'm not sure who else in the Bay Area has GNR ties, or why they passed on SF for the past few tours. I think Joe Satriani's a friend of Axl's.

I think they wrap the shows up with them all getting together, which Axl hasn't done since the Freddie Mercury show. But it's Neil fucking Young. It's possible they might all jam Paradise City, or Axl wil sing a Neil Young song the way McCartney did with him. A GNR meets Crazy Horse or Jack White playing with GNR would be pretty awesome. Or Axl singing part of Seven Nation Army.

The school is a good benefit, kids finding ways to communicate. We might even get an interview from Axl out of it, the kids do a Q&A, but it's questions they'd ask.  I'm sure DJ, Ron, Richard and Frank are going to be doing the most hanging with the kids.

I don't remember the shows being expensive, always wanted to go, but shit kept coming up in my life to head up there.

Neil headlines both nights, and brings everyone out at the end, they could do a GNR song at the end. I don't see why they couldn't do Paradise City to end one of the shows, but it would be kind of cool to hear Axl singing Rockin in the Free World or Down By The River. Flaming Lips are there, and they love trying to get people to collaborate with them. Maybe Neil will come out and do After the Gold Rush with them. But a Jack White/Neil Young (Neil and Jack..how Kerouacian) guitar duel...that's prob. going to be the one people are hoping to see happen.

Not at all. As the organizer and primary donor this is Neil Young's event - he has been doing this for 26 years and nobody, not Metallica, not Bruce Springsteen, not Guns N Roses should go over him

This is a great opportunity to hear GNR do some real special material, maybe add in some covers (new covers) or acoustic reworkings of old songs....I think the usual Greatest Hits set would just be null and void at such an important occasion as this, they need to add something really special into the set

How things have changed, eh, remember when GNR were playing nothing and going nowhere....and look at them....

Do most bands play just one night or both, and do they state which before tickets go on sale? It'd be my first time going to one of these, and I don't know if I should get tickets for both nights or just one. Obviously it goes to a great cause no matter what, but it's easier on the wallet for me if they're playing just one night. So excited, everything about this makes up for the six years of no northern California shows!

Do events like this ever get streamed over the internet?

Just going by what I found on You Tube, it appears they are filmed, plenty of Pro Shot video from previous years.

Did they change the venue configuration?  I went a few years ago and there was GA but it was in the back area.

Awesome, if it doesn't get streamed live I'm hoping we get to see the guys playing. New pro shot material is always welcome.  :)

There's still the lawn GA up in the back, but for some reason they don't list it as purchasable on the Ticketmaster/Livenation pages for the events yet, though I've heard on other sites it's $35 for one or $99 for a four-pack, both on the lawn.

Will they announce which bands are playing both days or if any of them are just playing one before the tickets go on sale? I'm stressing about that a little bit haha.

The Bridge Benefits have been streamed for a few years running now so I have fingers crossed that we may get to see this in any eventuality!

I'm not sure why you're saying the lawn isn't purchasable.  The show doesn't go on sale until Friday.  I've sat on the lawn for other Bridge School Benefits there, so it will be purchasable.

Oh yeah I didn't mean it wasn't purchasable period! Just that they hadn't listed everything by what level it was, just the price, though I'm assuming the $35 range on the ticketing sites is for the lawn, since every show I've been to at that venue has utilized the lawn even if I haven't sat there.

Jack White is one of my favorites and I am so ecstatic that both he and G N' R are going to be playing the same event. Let's also remember it is not about who is "headlining" or any of that non-sense. This is for a great cause.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for a performance by Jack and Axl together. Maybe jam with Neil Young on a Buffalo Springfield song to end the night?

In 2012 I would say Jack White is probably the bigger draw, at least in the US. I know some of you hate to hear that.

I think at benefit concerts its no so much the usual festival pecking order like at Reading, etc.  Jack White, Neil Young, GnR - all huge names, arguments for them all at the top.  it could also come down to logistics of set/whose guesting with who - who knows.

It's a mouth-watering line-up whichever band plays first or last and everything in between  :peace:

What do you base that on?

I should have clarified that. A bigger draw amongst the under 30 crowd. But this benefit may be not be that, considering it's Neil Young. So who knows? I may be way off. But it doesn't matter, all for a good cause.

I've been to 20 or so concerts at that venue, and I've never seen a show go past 11pm pacific. Usually they end around 10:30, I think theres a strict 11pm curfew for the venue. Assuming Neil Young plays last, I don't see any reason GnR wouldn't be done by 10.

If anyone is getting tickets last minute, it looks like they started selling some more of the lower level seating on Livenation! (still fairly far back in that level, though) So excited for tomorrow!

I couldn't find the scheduled time for GN'R, but it says the first concert starts at 4PM PST, so it would be around 1AM (Sunday morning) CET. I guess GN'R will play around 8PM PST or something like this? Hope we'll be able to see the recorded show on PPV too because I don't know if I'll stay up until 6AM lol.

So what time will GNR be on in CST? Thats Chicago time.

Guns N? Roses? acoustic set at this weekend?s Bridge School Benefit concert is one of the most-talked-about additions to Neil Young?s annual event and marks their first appearance at Shoreline Amphitheater in 21 years.

It?s particularly sweet for South Bay fans after the aborted Chinese Democracy tour resulted in the cancellation of GNR?s New Year?s Eve show at the HP Pavilion ten years ago?and they haven?t been seen here since.

Guns N? Roses bass player of 15 years Tommy Stinson showed up in San Jose Thursday night and shot some pool at South First Billiards with Anya and The Get Down guitarist Matthew Gonzalez, then rolled over to the Blank Club where it was, ironically, ?80s night.

Stinson?s former band, the Replacements, helped displace electronic Brit-pop as the dominant music of that era, launch the alternative rock movement and inspire bands like Green Day.

GNR?s longest surviving bass player, Stinson is no stranger to the valley, having played One Step Beyond, Cactus Club and the Blank Club as a member of the Replacements, with his 1996 band Perfect and more recently as a solo artist. This will be his first time stepping out on the Shoreline stage. And he?s looking forward to the non-paying gig, which supports a school founded by Neil and Pegi Young to teach communication skills to disabled children.

?It?s about the kids,? he says. ?Of all the different types of things we do, charity stuff is the most fulfilling.?

Stinson has been prolific recently; in addition to performing with Guns N? Roses, he?s completed three recording projects, including his second solo album (?more rootsy than Guns stuff.?) and a new Replacements effort.

A Minneapolis native, he joined his brother?s band when at age 11 and was a touring professional musician in his early teens, with all the rock star abandon. He remembers one time in London, ?they gave us our per diem in pound coins. We didn?t really understand what they were. What the fuck is this? We were yelling the mantra, where?s the pot roast and Cadillacs? We were whipping the coins off the roof of the hotels like they were pennies and dimes. It was a week?s worth of pay.?

The Replacements disbanded when Stinson was 27, and his brother, Replacements lead guitarist, Bob Stinson died less than four years later.

Tommy moved to Los Angeles and was recruited by Axl Rose in 1998 for the marathon 10-year effort to produce the Chinese Democracy album. After a rocky initial return to touring, GNR began a heavy touring schedule, with more than 100 dates in 2010 and 2011. ?We went to Moscow, Israel, Istanbul, Romania, South Korea, all kinds of crazy places,? he says. ?And India?s coming up.?

He moved to New York state last year with his wife Emily and their four-year-old daughter. He recently recorded an album in his home studio with his 22-year-old daughter, Ruby, who works in the Manhattan fashion industry. ?I played all of the instruments. She did all of the singing. I?m just hoping my four year old doesn?t want the same path, because I?ll be too old by then,? he laughs.

This summer he recorded an EP with former Replacements bandmate Paul Westerberg that has fueled speculation of a reunion, something Westerberg hasn?t ruled out. ?? I?m closer to it now than I was two years ago, let?s say that.? Westerberg told Rolling Stone earlier this month.

Stinson said the EP, recorded to benefit former Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap, who had a severe stroke, went well. ?It?s like 21 years hadn?t passed. We didn?t overdub anything. We just played live, like we were doing a show almost. The way we used to do things.?

?When Paul and I get together and play, there?s a certain chemistry that?s undeniable. It?s just a very special, finite thing that we have. Many bands never get that. They can get in a room together and play, but that?s it. There?s a certain chemistry that he and I have that goes beyond that.?

I was wondering if they might "tone it down" for this event.  Seeing as it's a charity event for kids.  Maybe they won't play some songs with suggestive lyrics.  I don't know, just a thought.  Would make choosing songs somewhat difficult  :hihi: though I'm sure they could work it out.  I'd love to hear "You're Crazy", and "Used to Love Her" is a solid acoustic tune as well.  But if the content matters, those songs could be out.  Again, I could be way off, and content isn't even considered.  We'll find out soon enough.

Can someone help me out, Im wanting to watch gnr from ontario, eastern time, when will they be on? and are they on right before neil young?

Not complaining....just being honest.  Axl never really sounds that great when a tour starts and it's no different here. 

Sincerely enjoying the show, I just don't think Axl sounds all that great overall. Hearing Better acoustic was awesome, though.

I wish Axl would get back to that raspy sound he had and has.  He has been singing higher the last couple years.  Even on Sebastions solo album he sounded more like the old voice than anything on Democracy.  Please I mean no hate and by the way patience is sounding really good.  

I know nothing about singing, but it seems Axl can struggle sometimes when he's trying to hit those high pitches, but when he's able to sing more naturally, like on Patience, he sounds great.

Has nothing to do with Patience relaxing him.  He sings Patience in his every day voice.  When he tries to go high, he simply can't.

This is a simple, imprompto set. a quick set change. axl sounds fine and it really is a different and new feeling for a gnr "gig."

You hear his stronger voice when says "look Out" and like "beat it" in paradise.

Axl sounded decent during some stuff and not so great in others. He still has the rasp when he goes up in the higher registers, but seems to lose it in his regular singing voice. I listened to the Rose bar sessions from 2010 and he just killed every song that night, so I know he still has the capabilities to do it. Not sure if its just that he needs to do more vocal exercises or just the first show cobwebs kinda thing, Not bashing him at all, the show was good last night

I had been looking forward to watching this show all week.  I thought the band sounded great, loved the interaction of DJ/Bumble with the kids but Axl really sounded bad.  There were a few moments where he sounded ok, but overall he had that "Mickey Mouse" sounding voice that everyone hates.  It's going to be a long month in Vegas if he can't do better than last night.

It was the usual rusty performance after a lay-off. Worst 'Better' ever tho. Jungle was a mess too.

Had fun watching. My computer actually was good too me last night. Too bad some of the bands had trouble with the sound. But thats what you get with so many set changes. Axl and the boys did a great job of just going threw it and doing the best they could with what they had. Looked like they were having a lot of fun. Couldn't stay wake for Neil. And I really wanted too see it. Aren't we suppose too be able to view it yet today?

I think Axl sounded amazing and so did the band.  If there was any strep throat Axl did not show it.  The band sounded great too.  Loved that acoustic bass sound.  Who is ready for Vegas?!?!?  Some idiots may want to hate on a great cause and that is their loss.  I had a magical evening watching this.

It was the best mix in the sound being you could really hear Axl.  That was a complaint I had with most of the last tour. 

Where's your evidence?

Did he have the same problem all through the tour this year and in 2011?

Does he just try to rest and tough it out, or does he (or local promoters) call a local doctor to get him through the show?

It was great to see them live and the crowd loved them.  To nit pick vocal performances is pointless and the other point is that the new material(Better) is very difficult to do vocally.  I had a great time, as did many others and it was for a great cause.  To say he didn't practice or didn't do this or that is pure speculation.

I'm not interested in fabricating things because I need to feel important on the Internet.

I report what I hear and what I know. If I'm only guessing, it's apparent that I'm only guessing.

It's ok Ron, it was a bit confusing anyway to stream only one night I think. ;)

I was at the show last night and here is what I noticed:

GNR got a huge round of applause from the entire stadium when their names were mentioned. Every song seemed to be received well, and I probably heard their name mentioned the most in passing. Things like "I've never seen Axl in person, but that was incredible!" The vibe was completely positive.

The band interacted with the kids which was awesome.

I saw a post concerning the swearing in "You're Crazy," it seemed he omitted some words in the first chorus, but at the end it just came out. No one noticed, and I'm sure he's not the first one to swear at this show. These are tough kids, a word won't hurt them :)

Playing "Used to Love Her" was hilarious as the second song. It just made them seem so badass. Also, they probably had the nicest acoustics the whole night. The guitars were so rich and full, and the bass during "Paradise City" was incredible.

Axl's voice was amazing. Strep throat or not, my god was he on. The first verse of "Jungle" was spotty, and he ran out of breath, but that's to be expected on a cold night. I heard no complaints, and the mood was exceptionally positive for them.

Most of the voice was a high-falsetto, which was very interesting for "Better." They slowed the tempo down and it sounded very exotic. His voice on "Sweet Child" was heavenly, and like another poster said, by far the best version I've ever heard of it.

When he did let the rasp out, it was soul-piercing. Especially on "Paradise City," when he would yell "beat it!" it was almost demonic. When Axl does this he is beyond comparison. Unique, incredible and inspiring, to say the least.

I've seen them 4 times, all during the '06 tour. I'd say this was the best show I've seen of theirs. Something was magical about it, and it was so much fun. I was in the lawn, and they were the only show where I never looked at the screen. The crowd, their energy and the whole deal was just amazing. Axl seemed to be in a great mood, and ended by thanking everyone for inviting them to play.

I don't know how it was on video, but they dominated the stage. For an acoustic show to have that much energy and bite, it was breathtaking.

I'm sure tonight will be just as good, if not better  :beer:

How many kick ass shows has Axl performed? If he was off because of strep cool, if he was off because he was just off cool. The guy plays 3+ hour shows when they tour, plays his heart out, and sounds awesome 99.99% of the time. Show me someone who is that consistent with their job !

Axl sounded just fine. If anything it seemed as he was holding back. BUt when he wanted to let it rip, he did, and it sounded good. Also, so much for my theory of them not playing UTLH. Opening with Crazy was awesome. It's not like any of those kids have never heard "fuck" before.

It's sure funny how some people like to critique on how people should sound, when they probably haven't even hit a note before.  Axl had strep throat... Imagine having a job and communicating with that condition, let alone have to sing.  Give credit where credit is due.

Well said, Gonzo Axl! I agree with everything you said, and now that I'm watching the videos from the stream I can understand some of the complaints (mainly in Welcome To The Jungle than anything else) because the sound really isn't as good from the stream as it was hearing it in person. Sure, Axl didn't sound perfect and I'll admit that, but it was kind of hard to care too much about that while being about four rows back from the stage. Had a GREAT view of DJ since he was mainly playing on the side my seats were on, and he even came over onto the far right close to the rows there for a bit, which was awesome, as well as seeing him and Bumblefoot interact with the kids of course! I can't speak for the audience as a whole, but it seemed like a fair bit was rocking out, my row and the ones around me were certainly getting down haha. I don't know, it was way more than cool enough for me to see them in an acoustic setting like that no matter what they sounded like, and the lineup for the entire show was amazing. For anyone going to today's show, enjoy the hell out of it!

Exactly. I'd imagine using your voice to the fullest, while having strep, isn't going to help anything. All in all he sounded good. He's got a lot of ahead of him, so why risk it. Notice at the end of Patience he really let it go, and sounded amazing.

If he really has strep throat give him a break. Talking with strep throat is hard enough never mind trying to sing and hit those notes. Anyone who's had strep throat will know just talking you sound like you have something stuck in your throat.

Yes, Axl *did* perform with strep throat, not easy to do. And there are 2 months of shows coming up to consider, you can't push and risk damage for the rest of the touring. Kudos for him pulling it off :)

Rather than judging, let's remember the whole point of this, which is to support those kids. It was about the smiles on their faces, and they had fun :) In my world this was the most meaningful and successful show we've done. Anyone who wants to join me in that world is welcome to, room for all :)

As a person with a disability, I'm glad Axl did this event!! Also, I think credit goes to Neil Young for setting this up and not using a disabled child as a poster child. It's something that Jerry Lewis and his foundation STILL needs to learn. 

I do feel it's very hard to play certain songs and do them justice using just acoustic. For example, when your used to hearing WTTJ with blistering electric guitar screams, and distortion and crunchy power chords. GN'R did an awesome job and so did Axl, everything was done to perfection it seems. But it's so strange to hear the sound of some songs, when done all acousticily for a change.  ;)

Watching the video now. For a man with strep he sounds pretty good imo. The mess up during jungle it doesn't appear he forgot the lyrics it seems he just couldn't get them out. He appears to reach for his throat cause he's having trouble singing.

On a side note, I really enjoyed watching all the backstage stuff with the kids. Their interviews with the bands were awesome. :) Jack White killed it too. :) Very Happy Guns were apart of this.

Seeing the guys interact with the kids is priceless. It shows you what this is all about. Not how good or bad axl sounded but about the band supporting a great cause and the kids enjoyment of it. The rest is trivial.

I did actually think it was a cool thing for a few of the kids to be sitting behind the set, seeing their reactions to the music was really heartwarming.

Saw some comments about GN'R being late yesterday.  I was there both days and didn't have an issue with when GN'R took the stage last night. For the record, tonight Guns took the stage 25 mins after Jack White finished his set, no Eddie Vedder opening.  Axl struggled at times last night but tonight he killed it. Very cool to see Neil Young on stage with the boys. Loved Axl's comment that Neil was gonna join them and "Kick my ass".  Can't wait to see them in Vegas on the 23rd and 24th.

Seems axl was feeling better tonight that he even joined on the final jam. Hope we get a audience recording of this show.

Everyone fucks up lyrics from time to time. He was referring to his voice, which is what most of the criticism has been about. Haven't heard anything from the second night, which by all accounts was far better, but his voice for most of the first night was pretty awful. Especially during Better. But it's kind of understandable if he was performing with strepthroat.

I do believe that performing with strepthroat is the fastest way to make sure you lose your voice completely and he probably should have cancelled to give it a chance to recuperate. But I also know what the reaction to cancelling would have been, and understand why he wouldn't have to put up with all of that again.

Nearly every review of the Bridge School this year is the same. "Short on Thrills" is a popular one. I really think 'journalists' just recycle whatever the first review happens to be, no matter how cynical.

This was my first true Bridge School show (I went once before when I was around 10), and I can't understand the negative reviews. Everyone around me in the lawn was loving it, and the whole atmosphere was great. $5 for a lawnchair, with some Blue Moon brew, and perfect weather all night. I bought a ticket because of GN'R, but I loved the whole show. I had never heard of K.D. Lang, but she was amazing. Neal was great, and I think the only band that I didn't enjoy was Flaming Lips. But even they weren't offensive, just not my cup of tea.

I understand the nature of reviews, but something feels terribly wrong about being overly critical of a benefit show - where the musicians don't get paid - for kids. Negativity sells though.

Anyways, thanks to the whole band for performing, and working hard to make it memorable. You could tell they were happy to be there, and that power showed on stage. I loved it, the crowd seemed to love it, and they are the most talked about band of the weekend. Cheers  :beer:

The negative people want to post their same shit over and over and over. Not only that, but they want to pass their opinions off as fact. But the moment someone with actual knowledge of the situation comes online and posts something (Jarmo, Ron, Beta, etc) they MUST be lying. Makes total sense....or not.

I do respect this post alot to be fair, at least jarmo is admitting that sometimes his posts can come across as harsh. But that's only because of the fustration of seeing people attack the band for pointless reasons, all because they want something to moan about. I can see things from both sides, I can appreciate a real fan having a legitimate reason to worry when they are genuinely concerned about whatever "issue" with the band. But I can also appreciate that sometimes those reasons are fantasy, and posting all of this negativity when you don't know the facts, is extremely ignorant as you are basing your "truths" on something you know nothing about...

Just wondering Beta.... It must also be incredibly difficult to to go from singing in front of thousands of fans, with some pretty loud assed music, to toning down songs like "Jungle", "Better" and "Paradise City", and trying to sing them in a more subdued voice. And that's no knock on Axl. I thought the show was great. A guy I work with who's always been one of the anti-GnR guys caught it, and was also pretty impressed by the new lineup after the benefit. I just think what Axl tried to pull off is hard as hell (Just for fun I tried it with Better today...and I can sing..and that shit just wasn't happening...lol), and I think he did pretty damned good.

And as for the guys running down Axl? I've been critical before, I fully admit it. As a fan, it happens from time to time. But unless you've picked up a microphone, done some recording, and played live shows, and actually know what the hell you're talking about, keep the shit talking to yourself. What Axl does, time and time again, ain't easy gang. It's easy to sit in an armchair and run him down for his voice on a difficult night for him. He's also human....just so happens he's way more awesome than you'll ever hope to be....like....ever......I mean ever....

Ali thanks so much for the updates, they were much appreciated!!!  I would however not encourage the haters by suggesting Axl's voice was not as full on Saturday night and that he flubbed the lyrics.  "The truth" is he did a kick ass set and sang in a different style that most aren't accustomed to hearing these songs acoustically.  Also people need to get over the lyric thing at the beginning of Jungle.  We have seen Axl perform hundreds and hundreds of times and I don't think anyone is better than Axl at reciting correct lyrics.  I know your're as loyal a fan as any Ali, I just don't want people getting the wrong idea with the way you phrased it! : ok:

You really do not know me. If Axl fucks up, he fucks up, period. FYI, during RIR Axl had 104f temperature and if you remember, we played under a lot of rain and lost more than half of our gear. You also should call hotel and ask name of the doctor that they called for Axl at the time, they love to give out information. You are just of one those people that love to shit on him and please don't call yourself a fan because that is the last thing you are. No matter what you say, they did an amazing thing and, judging any of the artist that were there, should be the last thing anyone should do because it was/is an amazing cause. I think this point is being overlooked by too many people.  People are so focused on how Axl sounds, what he looks like, his workout regimen, what he does when he's not on stage.  Lost in all the Monday Morning Quarterbacking is the fact that GNR was part of a GREAT cause.  And I for one, could not be happier about that.  Watching the videos of those kids, just shows you how tough they have it.  And for a few nights, GNR was able to bring smiles to their faces and everyone seemed to enjoy the show.  That's really the point of this whole thing.  Not whether or not you believe Axl was sick, or ever gets sick.  Not whether he doesn't care about the fans, or has poor conditioning.  They were part of something amazing for two nights, and for that, I couldn't be more pleased.  :peace:

I think the band need to be given huge props for playing as well as they did acoustically. I've said this before but it can be really hard to make a song still sound powerful when done acoustically, and all the guys pulled it off. As soon as I saw Richard rocking the fuck outta Your Crazy, I knew the band was all going to be on top form.

I was at both shows, and they were great. Great cause, great atmosphere, great performances, everything. Highlights for me were Guns performance the second night, which was amazing, Jack White the first night and celebrating the SF Giants win with people on the lawn. It was really nice of the weather to hold the rain until I got to my car. No need to be negative about things :peace:

They played for the kids and they sure loved it much more then that nagging so called fans who wants more and everything better.
You don't hear the kids nagging because they can't have what the most people are having and getting or can do.
I love bands who are giving themselves for those kids who love some special time.
These kids appriciate it more and you get more love out of them, then out of nagging persons.
Enjoy life of what you get and don't expect more out of it.

I gotta say Axl had some difficulties with WTTJ and I also think Better should be moved out from the setlist because it may be too difficult song to sing live nowadays. Otherwise the band kicked ass and Axl did a brave thing here, he didn't let all those kids down and that's what I like. I also loved to see the guys on the stage with the one and only Neil Young.  I'm really hoping that Axl gets well when the Appetite for Democracy tour starts!  : ok:

If  the band were to sound just like the record, they'd be miming, now THAT would piss people off  :rant:  I love hearing live music when I go to a show, its not about performance for me (unless its real bad) but the occasion, being there is far better than youtube or even a DVD, they for me are a distant second given the choice.

Anyone is entitled to a bad night periodically. It's too bad that this event got a bit more publicity than the average Guns gig - it's certainly not doing them any favors as far as public perception.

A: That's fair enough, if it's true. I just find it too much of a coincidence that the start of the tour sees his voice no where near his best, and mid-tour it gets miles better. You can say that touring will improve his voice, and it will. But it is similar to practising everyday for a month before a tour. If that is done, then he could be at his best from the beginning of a tour. Which, in the past, he has not been.

If you say he was sick, fair enough. But there are other examples of beginning of tours where he seems ill-prepared and things don't pick up until mid way through. Can the excuse always be 'he was sick'?

There are, granted, instances where he is strong and in full-voice from the start. Which is great - and is what I love to see.

A: No, I'm afraid I'm not 'one of those people'. I am frequently positive yet am frustrated because I want my favourite band to be the best they can be. That is all. I don't want others to see Axl on an off night. I want them to see him at his best. I've listened to the band since I was 11. I am a supporter of the new band, but want to see them achieve as much success as they can.



No matter what you say, they did an amazing thing and, judging any of the artist that were there, should be the last thing anyone should do because it was/is an amazing cause. If you have such a problem with Axl's voice, do us a favor, stop listening to him. There is nothing constructive coming for your post and, I am done talking to you, have a great day.

My opinion:

- I do think Axl sucked this particular show, but we all know how his voice grows and goes stronger with the pass of the shows, reaching skyrocketing levels at some points for example the last 2006 shows, or the last shows of the southamerican tour -in comparison to Rock In Rio- (I think my opinion here is valid because I attended them all).

- Is it the most important thing how good/bad were Axl vocals at these two particular shows? No! Not at all! The cause, the children of the Bridge School did!

- I dont think Axl's voice was THAT terrible like some people say. I just *think* (I can be wrong, I know) he did not rehearse enough. Acoustic versions of these classics songs need some reaccomodation / readaptation and it was pretty clear the band rehearsed a lot (the instrumental base was tighter than ever in my opinion) and Axl maybe didn't. I say *maybe* because Im not a part of the camp to state this as a fact, but common sense indicates that.

Anyway, I love Axl, I love the band (it's not *MY* band but I love it anyway), I want to see the guys live again (see them 10 times, cant never get enough) and I'm 100% sure Axl's voice will sound demoniac as always with the pass of the shows. Its always been this way.

I attended both shows and Axl did have trouble the first night... No doubt about it, but the second night KILLED! I will post the show as soon as it uploads completely!

If Axl wasn't in the best condition it didn't show so much at the opening.

Axl stands as the last real rock star alive. I wish I was there to watch this acoustic sets live n? I can?t believe how come some of the ?fans? behave just like the worst kind of lying press in the world. Apart from his voice (considering how bad he was as regards his throat he kicked some major ass! Axl in sick mode kicks Vince Neil in his top performances ever! Lol ), the whole idea of performing for the kids n? teenagers at the Bridge School is a beautiful n positive thing n? to play in the conditions he was? It's not rocket science. You can't deny that his voice gets better as the tour goes on.

Why isn't he close to his best from the start then?

Surely a more rigorous practising method pre-tour would allow for this?

Treating the month before a tour as a 'dress rehearsal', if Axl were to do something like 15 'mock', full shows  - just with the band and no audience, then his voice would be at the level it usually is mid-tour. Except it would be from the start.

If he does do something like that, then fair enough. I don't think he does. There is such a massive improvement between show 1 and show 10 that it seems unlikely.

Jarmo, you can try and push me aside here and belittled all of my arguments, but this is merely a discussion.

I - as a FAN - want Axl to be at his best. He is not always at his best.

He was not at his best at the Bridge Show. Beta says he was sick, fair enough. I feel that while that could have been a contributing factor, he did not prepare adequately.

That is not a knock on Axl. Like I say, I want him to be at his best. I don't mean to tell him what to do, I'm just suggesting. Don't take it personally.

I still believe that they know what they're doing and most people on the Internet have no clue. No matter how many years somebody has been a fan, how may bootlegs they've collected, how many hours they've spent on Youtube etc. Most people still don't know what it takes to do shows or tours.

Why? Because nobody does what Axl does except Axl.

There's only one Axl Rose. That's a fact, and unfortunately it's often forgotten.

Pay for it? Sure the rest of the band rehearse without Axl. That's well-known. How much extra is it to add in a singer? They have studios among them. Use them?

So you don't know about their rehearsal schedules then.

The band doesn't rehearse for weeks before every leg of a tour. Sometimes you only have two-three weeks between legs. Plus gear needs to travel to the next continent etc. People need to go home and see their families etc. How on earth do you manage your amount of rehearsals in this case?

The band needs to rehearse their parts. Then you want to add those dress rehearsal shows to that. It all adds up.

I don't think it's a matter of being naive if you think that in many cases people doing the actual work know best how to do it and achieve their goals. Especially if we're talking about somebody whose tool is his voice.

If the goal is to peak at the first shows, maybe you need to prepare differently than if your goals is to finish a two-three month tour, without having to cancel shows because of issues with your health!



Same thing happen in another field where people are dependent on their bodies performing: Sports.
Sometimes some athletes/teams peak early in the season, while others peak when the championship is won.... Do people get annoyed if their team loses a couple of games in the beginning of the season and then goes on to win the championship?

I have to pick up Jarmo's sports analogy here. Because it fits.

If practicing would directly lead to being 100% fit, why doesn't every team do it?
And a rehearsal can never give you the same feeling as playing in front of an enthusiastic crowd. That gives you an extra push.

When my favorite team loses a game, I am not satisfied, but I am not losing faith.
When a current or former member fucked up a solo, or Axl fucked up some lyrics, my fun watching the show wasn't spoiled. It just shows that we are all human. People make mistakes, so what?!
When Michael Jordan missed a final free throw and the Bulls the lost the game, I wasn't satisfied, although I watched the games from 3 am in the morning and needed to go to school the next day, because I knew that they would kick ass next time.

If you want a 100% perfect song, instruments and vocals, listen to the studio versions. Songs played live sound different, but you also get a show to enjoy, you get pyros and whatever, plus you can enjoy things with thousands of others at the same time!!!

Back to the theory that rehearsing leads to being on spot when the tour starts:
I think rehearsing is needed, but only to a certain degree. Maybe to get some stuff working like a different solo or a new song or simply to get some stuff back working. The longer a break between tour legs is the more a rehearsal is needed.
If there is only a month or 2 break then I don't see it being needed. Plus like I wrote before some things can't be rehearsed. You can't copy the live show feeling in a studio, let the guys incl. Axl improve themselves while on tour.

Each member of the band is so damn well sure what the best is for each of them.
I am pretty sure that none of them is taking it easy, and none of them is ignoring their own bodies or whatever.
They have the Las Vegas show coming up, then the next booked dates, a lot of stuff is in front of them, plus a lot of anticipation of fans and of those who aren't. A lot of people are waiting for things to happen just to be able to point their fingers at Axl or the guys.

Normally I am not taking the position of anyone, but here and now I have to back up Jarmo 100%.

Even if Axl would show his medical file here like someone asked for, some people would assume it would be a fake.

I, for myself, am looking forward to enjoying a lot more "not perfect" shows done by the band.

The main flaw with what you are saying, very simply, is that people with a strep throat struggle to sing, you can actually Google that one. No amount of practice would change anything

Secondly, think about this. You  are attempting to advise Axl Rose, a vocalist with 25 years plus experience, how to prepare his voice for touring.  :hihi: In the big scheme of things, please think about how ludicrous this is. Axl, if he wanted to, could access any number of vocal experts from anywhere in the world to assist with his vocals if he felt it was necessary.

It is a shame, because your sentiment cannot be questioned, you are not wanting to see Axl underperform and be criticised. I think this is fair enough, but please don't let your pride overwhelm your sentiment

My reference wasn't solely in relation to Bridge School - like I say - if he was in fact sick, fair enough. But preparation has without doubt, in my mind, been a factor in the past. It may still be, it remains to be seen.

I acknowledge that he is 25 years in the business, that's fine - and by all accounts, he is likely to know better than me. But, I don't think he uses that experience/access to his advantage as much as he could.

I'll happily discuss this with you Mysteron as you're at least open to accepting my POV. Some just feel he can do no wrong.  :hihi:

Even without a bad throat, Axl's voice just isn't there at times.  I went back and listened to the Rose Bar sessions and it is completely different than it was even on the last tour.  During that time (Rose Bar sessions), he has that deeper and raspier voice on a consistent basis (like he had when he was younger, and at certain times over the last 10 or so years).  I saw GNR early this year in Philly and it was even deeper and raspier.  Then, only a couple months later (after having April off), he came back with that higher voice again when he started touring oversees.  You listen to paradise city, sweet child o mine or better for example.....you will hear that much higher voice. 

Anybody who is familiar with singing...do you know why this is?  How can your voice go back and forth like that?  Or is that deeper raspier voice actually developed from drinking and smoking?  Does he have a much higher voice when he's healthier??

What ever it is....I absolutely loved those Rose Bar sessions and early 2012!

Listen to Shout at The Devil (motley crue) and then listen to Dr.Feelgood. It's like two diferent singers. Axl always had a high falsetto in addition to his deep, raspy voice.

Once he is warmed up his performance tends to get better. I think WTTJ, Better and PC isn't unplugged-songs at all tho. It's not Axl or the band so much (just listen to You're Crazy), it's the songs that is ment for electronics. Imagine The Prodigy unplugged. :nervous:
