Slash Speaks After Hollywood Walk of Fame Dedication

Energized guitarist feels he's 'cresting a wave'

JULY 11, 2012

Slash was honored yesterday with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Coming just three months after his induction with Guns N' Roses into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it makes for quite a year ? tributes that would cap many a rocker's career. But Slash, who turns 47 this month, is feeling quite the opposite.

"I definitely feel like I'm cresting a certain wave in my career where I'm having a really great time, I love what I'm doing, I love the people I'm working with and I'm feeling very energized," he told Rolling Stone after the star ceremony. "I haven't had that feeling since when Guns started."

He's feeling so motivated, he and his current band, featuring Myles Kennedy on vocals, are already looking ahead. "We've got the tour that's gonna go into next year, we're starting work on the next record," Slash says. It will be with the same band with which he made the current Apocalyptic Love album.

"It's kind of a Cinderella story," he said. "I had no idea this was going to be a band I was going to do things with ? I thought it was a pickup band. It turned out to be really, from the get-go, this kickass band, and now it's more like a group."

He traces all this enthusiasm to the work he started on his first solo album, Slash. "Ever since I went and did the solo record, it's all been hugely forward-moving, energetic," he said. "I've been really enjoying it."

It was a welcome change of pace after the drama of Velvet Revolver, which he said wasn't entirely the musicians' fault. "There wasn't necessarily pressure internally from Velvet Revolver, but it came from external, from management and all this kind of shit, and it got really crazy and hard to control," he said.

The hype that surrounded that group from the outset didn't help matters at all. "When we were putting it together word got out, and that awful fucking term, 'supergroup,' came up," he said. "We were fine, but then somehow that distorted a lot of different things and it just became a really unpleasant situation."

Ugh, not too excited to hear this.  Just what we need another half assed record thrown together.  Quantity over quality seems to be what Slash is aiming for these days.  The self titled album took some time as did "Contraband" and those turned out really cool, this last record, not so much.

I'm really enjoying Slash's new album! Great to run to, aswell.

In the absence of a new GNR album it certainly keeps things moving on aswell - any song is better than no song.

It's really obvious that he has no interest in VR. I didn't even buy the last Slash record because of Myles' vocals.

Is it that bad that there's no VR? I say no.. personally, I'm enjoying the Slash and Loaded albums a lot more then VR.. altough Apo Love doesn't do much for me. But we still got Loaded 8)

Only thing missing is the icing on the cake, a new Izzy release :P

I think Slash really enjoys writing and playing new music.  I am all for it if its what he wants to do.  I wasn't a huge fan of Apocalyptic Love, but its a solid effort.  The first solo album was incredible.

Cool to hear he doesn't plan on slowing down.
Apoc Love has some really cool moments on it. Myles inability to write creative lyrics keep it from being a great record, but I still enjoy it on the whole.
It's still better than 99.9% of the bullshit labeled as "rock" today, and the band rocks live.

Not losing any sleep over the end of VR, but would definitely like to see Slash and Izzy working together again at some point.

Yeah, at the very least, Slash could bring in Izzy or Steven as guests on separate tracks.  Either way, I'm also glad he isn't waiting around for anything else to happen, he's just going full-throttle.

seconded... for me, its the pathetic other band members, the bass player and the drummer that are ruining it. The vibe they're building is really cheesy 80s crap. I think Slash and Myles are both icing but both need to be with some sort of 'cake' underneath. that's pretty inarticulate but you get my point

oh yeah i agree...how about Slash feat. Izzy Stradlin - Apocalyptic Rock n' Roll Fuckfest!
Izzy doesnt hit me as the kinda guy that want to be the main man in anything big, so the "feat." suits it well.
seriously though, Slash and Izzy together on record again, it would be HUGE!
i've never heard 2 guitar players melt together the way they did, ever...in history..

I'll be honest with you guys, I haven't purchased any of the Slash solo albums, but have heard them via a friend who loves Slash. The first album was ok, some standout tunes on that one like By The Sword and Starlight. But regarding his latest effort... I couldn't wait for it to end when my friend braught it around my house.

Every song is generic, boring and standard rock n' roll... and it just goes on and on and on.  :-\

I haven't got a clue why he is now doing a 3rd album, and especially with Myles... Seriously the latest album is probably Slash's worst album since Slash's Snakepit. Not a fan at all...

And BTW, I never wanted to hate it at all.  :P

I do agree that sometimes Slash goes for quantity over quality.  He always seems to be in a rush to get an album out and get touring.

Still though, in my humble opinion, he has released better songs than any current or ex gunner.

I think Slash's first solo album is the best material the current/former members have produced since UYI, so I don't necessarily have a problem with him sticking with the solo route.
This won't be a solo record, though. Regardless of what it's called, it's a band.
Slash and Myles is a cohesive/solid record with some really cool moments but overall underwhelming lyrics.

Am I psyched for the next record? No, because I think Myles is what he is.
Good voice/range, light on content.

Thing is, there aren't many singers out there that we know about today that aren't light on the creative side.
People that once wrote good lyrics, don't anymore(Scott).

Should Slash wait around for the perfect frontman?
I'd personally like to see him collaborate with Stockdale, Cornell or Lanegan, but outside of that no one really excites me.

I'd prefer to hear him play rock n' roll than make Jeff Beck type records, so..
His playing is top notch on the last record, and I'm excited to hear what else he comes up with.
This band is also great live, though I'm partial to last years setlist.

I hear ya dude, I wanted to love it and I didn't.  Its alright, I think there are some good tunes on it, but as a whole its somewhat disappointing for me.  I have already stopped listening to it, unlike the first solo album that I actually still play every now and again.

You're just trolling as usual. I don't think every song is good and the previous albums certainly was better, but there is a lot of solid work on this album. There are a lot of good riffs, good lyrics and good hooks. So if you think 'every song is just boring, standard rock n' roll', maybe you are looking for the Linkin' Park or Katy Perry forum, perhaps?

Not every song on an album has to be a #1 hit, for it to be good.

Slash said the collaboration is likely to continue with another record once the current world tour is over.

?We are working on material, gathering ideas for another (record) at this point. We are sort of like in those early stages where I?m just recording different guitar ideas and I turn Myles on to it,? he said. ?He?s thinking about his stuff and what he?s going to do with it and so on.?

Rapid City Journal

"It's definitely the most fun I've had writing and recording a record since probably the Appetite for Destruction days," Slash says. "It was one of those situations where you just go in and have a really good time and feel like you're in your element, without a whole lot of outside distractions. I don't have any record company people or other weird pressures on me."

I saw VR 4 times live and Slash with this band twice, a third time coming in Sept, and I must say that any Slash concert kicks ass and is an event of major proportions in my life (lol). That said, the Slash solo album was really good (great), but the latest did not do much for me. I loved Contraband and Libertad was not bad either. If I had to choose, I would prefer to see VR back together than the incarnation of the band with Myles fronting. His range is admirable, but he lacks stage charisma. He is fine, but not close to great.

SLASH 'Gathering Ideas' For Next Album - Aug. 11, 2012

Andrew Cutler of the Rapid City Journal spoke to legendary guitarist Slash ahead of the VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES axeman's appearance at the Sturgis motorcycle rally.

"I just think Sturgis is a great event," Slash said. "I remember being excited to do it with VELVET REVOLVER [in 2007], and finally getting there. It was my first time there. Now I'm really looking forward to it, because VELVET REVOLVER with [lead singer] Scott [Weiland] was always like a hit-or-miss proposition. Whereas with this one coming up, I know it definitely is going to be a monster gig. It's going to be great to be in that environment."

Slash's second album, "Apocalyptic Love", came out in May and the ex-GUNS axeman has been on the road consistently with his band, MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS.

The group will head to Australia and New Zealand this month, but will return for a fall headlining North American tour that will begin on September 4 in San Diego and wind down on October 3 in Los Angeles.

"[The album has] been really well received and I was really pleased with the record in the first place; it's great," Slash said. "You never know what exactly is going to happen and I never have any what you'd call expectations, but once it's out there and people sort of dig it for the right reasons, it's always a good feeling."

Slash recently revealed that he and singer Myles Kennedy have already begun working on music for the guitarist's next album, to be recorded sometime next year.

"We are working on material, gathering ideas for another [record] at this point," Slash told Rapid City Journal. "We are sort of like in those early stages where I'm just recording different guitar ideas and I turn Myles on to it. He's thinking about his stuff and what he's going to do with it and so on."

Slash has moved on from VR, unfortunately. He is having a blast with this band, and he has enough money to do what he wants. Good for him!

BTW, this last album is really weak. I thought Libertad was so so, but in comparison to both his solo albums it rocks.

Are you serious??!!
Apocalyptic Love is filled with killer Slash riffing and great soloing. Libertad sounds like a pop album next to it.

Based on the quality of tracks like Halo, Standing In The Sun and career-redefining awesomeness of Anastasia, I'm really looking forward to more Slash & Myles tunes than a VR reunion.

Apocalyptic Love is very weak compared to the Slash album.. that one contains killer riffing and great soloing 8)

I love Slash's playing but I hope the next one will be better.. to me it sounds like he's not pushed to his boundaries on AL, not playing wise but writing wise. To many cool guitar parts that are followed by weak fill parts.

Also I don't like the mixing on AL, go back to the solos-in-the-centre and forgot about playing them live all in the right channel, it's too sloppy.

I was never really sold on Myles and I don't think I ever will be. I just don't like his voice. Sucks because I love Slash's guitar style. Myles just ruins it for me.

Obviously Slash is done with VR, he likes this current gig with the solo stuff and he seems like that is where he wants to be. Its been said before, but it would be cool if the rest of VR moved on without him. A tall order due to Weiland's baggage but I can always dream......

Yup!

Could care less about VR but I wanna see Duff write some music with a talented frontman. Say Corey Taylor or someone.

The more I listen to the new album the more I like it. It is a very solid album, and some songs are addictive. I especially like Not for me, No more heroes, Far and away, Anastasia, and Halo. Those are the songs they play live and now I find them the best. You're a lie is an obvious single but the other songs I mention are even better. Funny, when Contraband came out I did not like it at all the first few listens, and then I saw VR live and loved the album. The same thing with Apocalyptic love. Just saying.

If Slash can keep up the strong writing, I look forward to a 3rd album soon.

Definitely disagree about Corey Taylor, but I think you're spot on regarding AL. I can see how some might not love Myles, but I still think the album is really good as a whole, with some awesome guitar moments for Slash. I'm excited for more music from this current lineup. Also a hell of a lot of fun to see live!

yeah, slash forgot what it is... it's just pandering to 80s conventions with songs about LA, chicks and drugs. that was rebellion in the 80s, but its mainstream and cliche now. and slash hasn't been a rebel for so long that its all just a bit hollow.

he's still got an unbeatable ear for solos but there's no real "rock" energy to the album, it just feels a bit like it's going through the motions. there's a couple of good moments i guess.

Some of u are nuts

AL is AMAZING.

Some of the best guitar playing of his career and the songs kick ass.

I think some forget what "Rock" really is.

Please stop with the Corey Taylor shit.. that guy sucks.

Opinions, old Donald. Music is subjective. You should know since so many disagrees with you.

I could not listen all through AL. MKs voice ruins it. Put it on now while writing this, turned it off as soon as he started singing.

Could not care less if it's Slash's most skilled record guitar wise or whatever. Myles voice make my ears bleed so I can't appreciate anything with it. I bet I would've liked it with some vocalist I like.

I didn't bring up Corey taylor for Slash nor VR. I mentioned him because it's obvious that Slash is all dedicated to this thing for the long run. I'm fine with that.

It is my wish that Duff gets to work with some great vocalist. I've always liked Duffs song writing but not so keen on his voice. I want him to get recognition away from Slash and Axl. It is a fact that Duff really liked Corey when he was writing with VR and those feelings were mutual. One of them even said they wanted to do something together in the future, I think it was Duff. I've seen Corey live in concert 4 times. 3 with slipknot and once with Stone Sour. He's one of the best frontman today. Energetic and his voice is pretty much always spot on. However I'm not a big fan of his latest releases with Slipknot or Stone Sour and that's why I'd like to see him with Duff.

I am actually a bit surprised that you hate on Corey that much, figured Stone Sour's melodies would fit your taste. Maybe you don't like his voice the same way I don't like MK's. Listening to Stone Sour's new record now, full of hooks but not really my thing. Too "anthemic" I guess. Too "radio friendly" maybe. There's also some ballads and I'm not a ballad kinda guy.

I'm ignoring the silly "some forget what rock really is" part of your post.

Slash is having a rush with this band and especially with Myles. It seems to me that he is going to go with it for a while, and that VR is not even a consideration now...

yeah its easy for him, and thats fine, he has earned the right to do what he wants.  But at the same time, fans like us have to suffer because he is just going to be giving us more generic rock n roll.  The first solo album was great and interesting.  You can hear especially with the song with M Shadows that these guest artists really pushed Slash out of his comfort zone, and i thought that was absolutely great.  What is the point of another record with Myles, what new ground are they going to break that they didn't break on "Apocalyptic Love"?

VR made one good album and one bad one, I would have liked to see what the third would have sounded like.

I buy any record Slash puts out, and will buy this next record as well, but I am not thrilled with the direction.

The point (if there is one) is that Slash isn't trying to make a point.  Slash has made his mark on the music world.  He doesn't need to spend the rest of his life trying to "break ground".  Now he is simply doing what he wants and not trying to relive his 20s.  Musical taste is always subjective, some will like it and some won't.  Personally, I enjoyed his second solo effort more than the first, and am looking forward to another.  I would also like to see a third VR record happen, but if the breakup of GNR taught me one thing, it's to never sit on my laurels waiting for a band to reunite.  Slash is coasting along painlessly and doesn't want to even try to deal with the horseshit of trying to reunite with Scott to do another VR album (even if Scott wants it) and I understand and support him on that.

Once an artist stops "breaking ground" that is when I lose interest.  All of my favorite bands are the ones where you hear a certain song and you can place what era of the band that it came out in.  I don't like bands where when you listen to a song you have no idea when they recorded it.  This is why I dislike bands like AC/DC, I like hearing a band evolve and their progression over time.  Which for example is why I am such a big GNR fan, AFD sounds nothing like the Illusions, and the Illusions sound nothing like CD.

I can picture in my head exactly what this next Slash/Myles collaboration is going to sound like, so once again what is the point?  As much as I disliked Libertad, I do appreciate the fact it sounds nothing like Contraband, and I do still listen to it from time to time.

Slash is brilliant when he pushes himself, that is why I get so bent out of shape over this.

Well that's clearly not true, because Bad Religion has been making the same record for 30 years.

It's cool though, Social Distortion has been selling me the same record, and countless concert tickets to the same show for as long as I can remember!

Anyways, I think it has more to do with your dislike, or disdain for Myles Kennedy, because AL doesn't really sound like GN'R, VR, the solo album, or Snakepit.
It sounds like a rock n' roll record, and if you can get past Myles voice, there's nothing to dislike about Slash's playing on it.

Unfortunately, Myles and company aren't quite on Slash's level.
It's cohesive, it sounds like a "band", just not with very exciting components I guess. Slash's playing is the highlight, and not much else about them is terribly interesting.
I think they rip live though, and there are far worse albums being spit out than AL.

I'd probably prefer another VR record at this point given the choice, but wishing Slash back w/Scott is no less selfish or delusional than Axl to Slash..
Either way it's a rock record to look forward to, and I can count on one hand the amount of bands putting those out these days.

Ha, I said my favorite bands, Bad Religion is not one of my top bands, but I do enjoy them, as well as Social D, but those bands never switch it up.  But I do like a lot of punk bands because lyrically they are not singing about their hangover, how much pussy they are going to get or how much they like to "rock".  I loathe that shit.

I dont hate Myles Kennedy, I liked him in small doses with Slash, and I really do enjoy him in Alter Bridge.

The last record was a very generic rock record with the exception of "Anastasia."  There are countless bands like Hinder and Nickelback making generic radio rock, we don't need Slash to contribute to that.

I personally prefer AL to the first solo album.  And in general, I prefer Slash's playing these days to the VR days when he was stifled by Scott.  Not knocking Scott... he is an incredible frontman but he lacks range and that makes it harder for a guitar player like slash.

Overall Id be prefer a 3rd solo album over a VR reunion.

I also prefer Slash's playing on the solo records to the VR records, but I'm not sure I'd blame that on Scott.  Hell, in his book, Slash blamed his reserved playing on Contraband on the small ass studio he chose to save VR some money!
