Conventions off to rockin' starts with Camp Freddy concerts

June 25, 2012

Kicking off both the Republican National Convention in Tampa Bay, Fla., and the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., is rock supergroup Camp Freddy, made up of Billy Morrison (from Billy Idol's touring band), Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney, Guns N' Roses' Matt Sorum and Donovan Leitch, son of the folk singer Donovan.

"Camp Freddy is bipartisan so we talked to the guys and said, 'Hey, will you guys play both sides of this?' They were like, 'We'd love to,' " explained Jamestown Entertainment's president, Freddie Wyatt, whose D.C.-based company is planning a pop-up nightclub in Tampa and various events at the NC Music Factory in Charlotte, including the Camp Freddy shows. What will differentiate the two performances, taking place the Sundays before the conventions, are the musical guests the band will jam with. "We don't know who they'll bring," Wyatt explained. "There's a couple of people that we requested, that we've put into the mix, but they don't really tell us until we get to sound check, which is actually kind of fun."
