Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! Post by: Mysteron on April 27, 2012, 07:14:32 PM But they never sing the Classic Def Leppard song, 'Rock of Ages'?
It is all too cliche imo. Ending with 'Don't Stop Believing' is quite desperate (Glee have done that already). Catherine Zeta Jones singing is also a name buster, nothing more. She released one single in the UK, it flopped. It is a good mix of songs though. Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! Post by: Annie on April 27, 2012, 10:09:01 PM The musical was awesome! I'm not so sure about the movie although I do like Russell Brandt : ok:

She released one single in the UK, it flopped. It is a good mix of songs though. The musical didn't have the rights to Def Leppard's songs, and they granted it for the film. The beginning of the musical is David Coverdale's voice mentioning it. It's possible "Rock of Ages" is in the closing credits. You can't compare it to "Glee" because it predates the show, and "The Sopranos" hadn't made the final episode yet. Anything that's turned into a musical has that risk of running high camp, and they're going with a genre of rock that was known for being campy. I think it's cool that one of the biggest actors in the world is taking it on and singing it. Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! Post by: LordRazZ on April 27, 2012, 10:32:04 PM Really? Did I really need to read this? Ya know, I would have died happy having never known this had existed.
Thank you...really...   Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! Post by: lynn1961 on April 28, 2012, 12:59:35 AM Well, damn! I was hoping to hear it! Didn't someone around here say that they thought Cruise's character in this movie reminded them of Axl Rose? I remember reading that, somewhere, here.
Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! Post by: raindogs70 on April 28, 2012, 03:06:55 PM The scenes they're showing seem like Axl Rose meets Frank "TJ" Mackey from "Magnolia". He's one of the few actors that was superfamous when the story took place and living in LA, but it was a scene a clean cut "kid" like him wasn't a part of.
At least we have "Decline of Western Civilization II..." Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! This is a peculiar subject really. :hihi: Part of me regards alot of these songs as sacred and noone else should sing them. Yet, at the same time, I am interested to hear what other versions sound like. Rock of Ages is iconic Def Leppard for me, it is one of their key songs, and only they can sing it correctly. I think that way about Paradise City too. Axl's voice is perfect for the song, his interpretation is the interpretation I want to hear. Perhaps the reason I, maybe, want to hear other version is it reinforces my opinions about the original songs. It is interesting to think about anyway. Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! Post by: cyllan on April 28, 2012, 08:01:25 PM Never have been able to see the attraction of Tom Cruise myself. Russell Brand, however, is made for this film and should make it worth a look. Although on a purely selfish note, I wish he'd stop fannying around in Hollywood and get his arse back over here and do some more stand-up. :D

Nothing takes away from the original, but there's a time when it might be used to build a whole other story, in this case, a musical where the songs are part of the story, and not really about the bands of that time. It also plays a part in people wanting to hear the original. I think it's incredible how a band can have something that has material that becomes bigger than they could ever imagine. I'm sure when they were recording it, they weren't thinking it would be something you could find in every major city in the world... or maybe they were? They had a bunch of songs, they recorded them, and the world's enjoyed it ever since. Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! It's possible this movie could end up being just lame, and I'm not really a Cruise fan, but it actually looks like it could be kind of good. I'll probably go see it. Since I'm old enough to say I lived through the 80's rock era, I think it could be kind of a fun movie - with the music and the characters. Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! Post by: lynn1961 on May 01, 2012, 12:47:56 AM Well, it did look like it had a Glee vibe to it, too. I'll be waiting until it comes out on DVD, of course. Not rushing right out to the theater or anything. :hihi:

I see what you mean, but man, I saw Def Leppard sing Rock of Ages maybe five, six years ago, and they were awful. It was a televised event. Can't remember what for. I guess that would be the exception. Axl can still bring it on PC. Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! "Rock of Ages" the play is a huge deal here in NYC, and this movie has A- listers all over it. I think it will be pretty cool. Think DLR+Bret Michaels+Vince Neil+David Coverdale. He is not supposed to be anything like Axl Rose. Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages ! Better than Fergie, not better than Myles. But I'm not sure that really pertains to how well the song is hm? I want to know who they got the recreate the "Appetite" sound....guitar players have been chasing that for years and apparently they just up and got it done haha. Title: Re: Tom Cruise sings Paradise City at the soundtrack of Rock of Ages !
