I received an e-mail confirmation when I made the donation.  They also mailed me the nicest letter.  :)

It reads:
     I think it is great that you chose to honor Axl Rose by sending (x) as a gift to Covenant House.  Your donation will go towards helping us take care of the thousands of young people who come to our doors each day.
     Because of your support, tonight homeless, forgotten, hungry young people will sleep in the safety of our shelters.  And tomorrow they will wake up believing that maybe their lives aren't over at such a young age.
     I hope you will remember our young people in your prayers.  You are in mine.

After spending nearly 30 years in the rock spotlight, hell-raising GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose turns 50 on Monday (06Feb12).

The singer grew up in Lafayette, Indiana before moving to Los Angeles in 1982, when he began plotting his path to superstardom.

Just a year later (83), Rose formed the legendary band with Tracii Guns, merging his group Hollywood Rose with his friend's L.A. Guns, and he has been regularly grabbing headlines ever since.

From his tempestuous love life to his famous temper and rumours of rampant professional perfectionism, Rose's time in the spotlight has been far from quiet, and even as he reaches the age of 50, it is doubtful the wild man of rock will be settling down with a pipe and slippers any time soon.

To celebrate Axl's milestone birthday we present 10 fascinating fact about the rock star we all love to hate. Happy birthday Mr. Rose - keep on rocking!

- Axl was born William Bruce Rose, Jr., but his last name was changed to Bailey after his mother re-married. He legally changed his name to W. Axl Rose in 1986.

- He acquired the nickname while singing in a band called Axl.

- After moving to Los Angeles, the rocker worked as night manager of the Tower Records store on Sunset Boulevard.

- The first release by Guns N' Roses wasn't the hugely popular Appetite for Destruction, it was actually a four-song EP called Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide, which hit shelves in 1986. The songs were later re-released on the band's 1988 album G N' R Lies.

- Axl Rose is currently the only remaining original member of Guns N' Roses left in the band.

- The singer made a brief foray into acting with a cameo appearance in Clint Eastwood's 1988 Dirty Harry movie The Dead Pool. Rose played a musician attending a funeral.

- Rose withdrew from the spotlight after the original line-up of G N' R collapsed in 1997 and he was considered a music industry recluse by the end of the 1990s. He resurfaced with the band in 2001.

- The rocker kept fans waiting more than a decade for the band's last album, Chinese Democracy, which was eventually released in 2008, 15 years after 1993's The Spaghetti Incident?.

- Rose was married to Erin Everly, daughter of Everly Brothers singer Don Everly, and he wrote hit track song Sweet Child o' Mine for her. They divorced after less than a year of marriage.

- The star also dated supermodel Stephanie Seymour. They became engaged after two years, but separated just three weeks after the proposal.

Axl Rose Turns 50

Believe it or not, on this day in 1962, the man behind Guns N Roses, W. Axl Rose (born William Bruce Rose, Jr) was born, making the iconic front-man the ripe young age of 50. With the original lineup of his beloved band in the late 80s-early 90s, he garnered great success with the classic album Appetite for Destruction, which not only featured the megahits ?Sweet Child O Mine,? ?Paradise City,? and ?Welcome to the Jungle,? but also sold 28 million copies worldwide and became the best-selling debut of all time. Axl is almost as well known for his off-stage antics as he is for his performances on-stage. Let?s take a closer look at the different facets of Rose?s monumental career.

Studio Albums- Of course, Appetite is talked about the most (as well it should be), but GNR did release other mega records, with all six studio albums going platinum. The Use Your Illusion albums were heavily anticipated and did end up living up to the excitement, featuring such songs as ?You Could Be Mine,? ?Estranged,? ?November Rain,? ?Don?t Cry,? and ?Knocking on Heaven?s Door.? The Spaghetti Incident, an album of covers, was the last album released for fifteen years until Axl?s new lineup finally came out with Chinese Democracy in 2008.

Videos - Most of the early videos are simplistic in nature, either featuring the band in a small place (?Sweet Child O Mine?) or concert footage (?Paradise City?). My personal favorite is ?Garden of Eden? which has the band just singing to a single camera but you can?t help but smiling as you see all the fun that?s going on. Rose lost a lot of metal-heads (and band-mates) with his trilogy of videos (?Don?t Cry,? ?November Rain,? and ?Estranged?) that were actually short films that combined, would make one autobiographical narrative.

Personal Life - Rose?s domestic disputes with past girlfriends Gina Siler, Erin Everly, and Stephanie Seymour have almost become public knowledge over the years. He was sued by both Everly and Seymour in 1993-1994, due to allegations of physical assault. Even Siler testified that Rose could be ?violent and irrational.? Don?t worry- Rose hasn?t had any tumultuous relationships since the mid-90s.

Legacy - Certainly, Rose?s periods of authoritarianism and fascism has annoyed many people over the years, causing musicians and managers to leave the band. Thankfully, he has made peace with almost all the original members of GNR, except of course for Slash. Despite a volatile past, Rose is consistently ranked as one of the best front-men of all time, and Guns N Roses will finally be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Dear Axl. Hi. My name is Rafael Tavares, I'm 24 years old and I live in Rio de Janeiro. I would like to congratulate you on your 50th birthday and say that over these years you have been a major (if not THE MAJOR) influence in my life. More than family members and close friends. When I was young and discovered GNR back in '93 (yes, I discovered and became fan of the band because of "I Don't are About You" by the time I was 6 years old...no sweet child here!haha) a new world had opened for me. A few years later, when I was 11, I decided to look for the translations of your songs, since I didn't know how to speak English...and I ended up translating ALL the GNR's songs to portuguese, and I would listen to the records over and over again reading the book of translations I made. When I realized I was 18 years old, fluent in English and working as a translator to, guess who? SEBASTIAN BACH! Now I teach English and I'm graduating in Languages...all because some day I wanted to know what you were singing about.

You gave me a career. But that's not it. You gave me life as well.

You see, in 2008 I was under a very strong state of depression that went up until 2009/2010...I tried to kill myself a few times during that time. But when the whole fuzz about CHIDEM and Dr. Peper started to pop out, something was telling me the album would be released that year...and this gave me the strenght I needed to try to stay around for a couple of more months. I still remember the day I bought Chinese and listened to it. I cried like there was no tomorrow...and songs like Catcher in the rye, There Was a Time, Scraped, This I love, Prostitute and specially Madagascar helped me to get over my depression. I don't know how you managed to do it, but you did. Chinese Democracy got me over my depression and my will of killing myself. So thank you for that!

Later on I was diagnosed as Bipolar, so I still suffer from these depressive states, and when I'm like this I put your songs on, because it's like they're speaking to my soul and taking away all my problems. Coma, Estranged, Catcher and Madagascar are an amazing combo for when I'm down in the gutter...

What I'm trying to say is that you didn't give me a reason to live just once...everyday you give me a reason to focus, to go through, face whatever I have to face and, most of all: not to take shit from ANYBODY, and BE TRUE to what I believe it's right. So thank you for that too.

You've really changed my life, and you still do even not knowing me. But I love you as a member of my family, and I'd like to wish you a very happy birthday, that all your dreams come true and that you keep on rocking for other decades, because you're the only rocker with balls remaining in the scene...and we need guys like you. You're a genius, and you still have a lot to give.

Hope to have the privilege to meet you someday. Then I can die happy, because I'd had met GOD. You are my god, and GNR is my religion.
