Slash Sets the Record Straight on His UK Birthplace, Premieres New Track

Nov 7th 2011

"I've had live albums out before, but this is my fist one with the solo band," says Slash. The legendary guitarist is on the phone with Noisecreep promoting his upcoming live album (his first), 'Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy: Made in Stoke: 24/7/11.' Recorded in Stoke-on-Trent, England this past summer, the album was a sort of homecoming for Slash, born Saul Hudson on July 23, 1965.

"Just to set the record straight, I wasn't born in Stoke-on-Trent. I was actually born in Hampstead, London. But I was raised in Stroke-on-Trent until I was six and I loved it there. I'm actually from a small town within that called Blurton. Believe it or not, Stroke-on-Trent was famous for its pottery," laughs Slash.

The guitar hero looks back at his childhood in England with fondness. "I had so much fun during that time period. When you're that age, you really start taking in a lot of information and I think that's why I have many vivid memories of England.

"It was cool because everyone knew one another. It was a cozy and homey type of place. Then we also had that brilliant English weather there too, but that's OK [laughs]. But the countryside was beautiful and I remember being in school with our little uniforms and the lollipop lady walking across the street. That kind of stuff I'll always remember."

Noisecreep is stoked (see how we did that there?) to bring you the exclusive premiere of 'Beggars & Hangers On,' from 'Made in Stoke 24/7/11.' Check it below along with the rest of our interview with Slash where continues to tell us about his childhood in England.

Slash tells Noisecreep his first glimpse into the rock 'n' roll subculture came during those early years in the UK. "My dad used to take me into London all the time by train. It was such a different world there. It was interesting to see the whole art, music and hippie culture, happening there and then going back to my little life in Blurton."

The Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver guitarist's parents are both in the arts. His mother Ola was a costume designer who counted David Bowie as a client, and his father Anthony created album covers. "My mom is from Los Angeles and she met my dad in Europe. I think I was conceived in Paris. Anyway, we eventually moved to Los Angeles because the entertainment industry was there. It was a huge culture shock for me once we did get to L.A. The energy level there exploded, where in Blurton it was so much more quiet and familiar. So it took time for me to get used to the vibe in America."

Although he's lived most of his life in Los Angeles, Slash admits that he still misses the small town charm of Blurton. "To this day, I still have deep feelings for that place. I do miss living in England, specifically Blurton, because that time was so sweet for me. But I have no regrets about moving to Los Angeles. Most of the things in my career are a direct result of me living in California and the things I learned there. I wouldn't change that for anything."

I like the chorus.  The ending was cool, but  the rest is kind of boring.   Maybe it's better if you are watching the video.

I agree. For the most part, I thought Dover was a hack, but Beggars is one of the tracks he got right.

It was great having a chance to hear this live though in Boston and Jersey.
Myles voice wasn't as dominating live, and it was actually one of the highlights for me.

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced the U.S. release of Slash's (VELVET REVOLVER, ex-GUNS N' ROSES) first-ever live solo album, "Made In Stoke 24/7/11". The double-disc CD, and a special-edition 2CD+DVD package (featuring five bonus tracks and an exclusive interview with Slash) hits stores November 15.

The iconic, Grammy-winning rock guitarist and songwriter Slash has perfected the science of the six-string for over 20 years as an integral component of GUNS N' ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER and as a hugely successful solo artist. On July 24, 2011, he made a very special visit to in the British town of Stoke-On-Trent, where he was raised until he was five, at the end of the 2010-2011 tour in support of his globally chart topping and critically acclaimed self-titled solo debut.

Captured at Victoria Hall as part of an intensive world tour, this 21-song set is a celebration of a legendary career. Joined by Myles Kennedy of ALTER BRIDGE on vocals, Slash ripped through cuts culled from his GN'R days, VELVET REVOLVER, SLASH'S SNAKEPIT, and his solo album, (including the single "By The Sword"). His band lineup included bassist Todd Kerns, drummer Brent Fitz and guitarist Bobby Schneck.

Not really a fan of Myles' take on it, but that's one of Slash's best solo songs, Eric Dover goes off on the studio version! : ok:

Slash Shows Off His Band's Chemistry on New Live Disc

On Slash's 2010 self-titled release, the guitarist worked with some of rock's greatest singers ? Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy, Chris Cornell and Iggy Pop, among others. When it came time to tour, those vocalists obviously had other committments, so the guitarist recuited Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy, as well as bassist Todd Kerns and drummer Brent Fitz, to travel around the world with him.

He wasn't looking for this to be a long-term band, but the chemistry was undeniable. "It was one of those moments where from on high you get sort of a blessing and get all the right people without looking for them. It just happened," Slash tells Rolling Stone. "From the onset we clicked. We just got better and better over time."

That cohesion is on display on Made In Stoke 24/7/11, a live chronicle of the guitarist's return to Stoke-on-Trent, the town where he was raised until the age of five. Featuring a mix of Guns N' Roses tracks ("Rocket Queen," "Sweet Child O' Mine," "Mr. Brownstone"), Slash's Snakepit tunes and material from Slash, the live album shows the quartet has melded into a real band.

Making it official, they're already at work on an untitled album due in April of next year. Slash knew very early this was the group to make his next album, he says. "I learned way back in March of 2010, when we did our first show at the Roxy, [and even] before that, when we were rehearsing, there was something that clicked with those guys," he says. "It was just always a lot of fun, and I decided that?s who I wanted to do the record with."

Thus far they've recorded three tracks, with 14 more to come in December and January when Kennedy gets off the road with Alter Bridge. Slash is pumped up about what they've done so far, calling it "fucking rad." "On the last record, creatively it was pretty open-ended. This one is very diverse, but it?s one band," he says. "It?s really cool. It rocks really hard. There are some cool epic songs and a couple of really cool ballads. I hate calling them ballads ? more bluesy tunes. It just covers a lot."

I don't know if it's simply the personal attachment for me with that song but I absolutely love it, and it sounds awesome live. There's so much hate/frustration in the riff that it just rips one's heart out. The tempo seems a bit too high, but otherwise, amazing.

No, you cannot.  You can only do the reverse:  play DVDs in Blu-Ray players.

I bought the live CD version, and I love it!  I love the fact that Slash is including all areas of his career in his setlist (GNR, VR, solo, both versions of Snakepit).

I was floored by how well Myles handled all the vocals on the old GNR songs, and I thought all of Slash's songs sound better with him on vocals.  I think it's a good move to have him take the mic for all the songs on Slash's next album.

I got the DVD for christmas, and I'm liking it.. a lot!

A great selection of songs, I like the sounds, the production, all of it. Myles is not a perfect fit for all the songs as his voice is kinda thing at times, but seeing as most of the songs weren't designed originally for him, he does all right. The band sounds good, and I'm really glad they did this.

Hope to hear something new from these guys soon!
