20 years!

That's amazing really, the albums are holding up really well. A lot of classics as well as many underrated gems on those records.

My first GN'R record was actually UYI 2.

The local Buffalo station (1033 The Edge) played 6-8 tracks off UYI 2 yesterday (including Estranged and Locomotive!), which is exciting because as of a few years back they N-E-V-E-R played GNR

My first GN'R record was actually UYI 2.

It was my first cd  : ok:

I can't believe it's gonna be 20 years tomorrow. I remember till this day skipping school to wait for the record store to open. Bought both on CD, LP n' cassete. I remember that when I first got it in my hands I saw Live And Let Die at I n' Yesterdays at II but I was so excited that I didn't relate the name Yesterdays to those precious seconds where Axl is singing with Wes on acoustic guitars so I thought there were a McCartney song in one n' a Beatles song at the II ! lol.

Seems like yesterday I was in the sixth grade and my Dad went to the Midnight Sale at Flipside Records to buy them for me! My mom yelled at me for waiting up for him to get home. Then when I woke up, I only saw UYI 1 on my desk...found out he took II to work! And that year it was my first CD!

20 years, holy shit.

My father picked up UYI on CD for me the day it came out. Only problem was, I didn't own a CD player yet!
Had to wait until next day to return it for cassette.

I remember going to the local (overpriced) record store with my mother and - I was 14- and when I walked in the store there were tons of promotional items and cases of the two CD's in the old long boxes. Great memory, great albums.

Mad Season was a side band Layne Stanley had at the 90's - there's a song called "Long Gone Day" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCl108Lxav0

Illusionone, do you have this image with some good pixels? I wanna make a tattoo of this soldier/guy but I can't find a good one!

One of my favorite songs. Tough to beat Staley and Lanegan on the same track!

I'll check that out. I may of heard it but don't know it by name. The image is from HTGTH - it was one of the options that are available for your avatar. Jarmo will probably have that.

I remember skipping school first thing in the morning to go get this TAPE!  I got detention for it too...

Love Mad Season, find myself playing it on the guitar occasionally.

I remember buying it from the local store, "Record Stop", on Long Island on the Friday before it's official release...Who would have thought Nirvanas Nevermind went on sale that day as well...There was a line of people waiting for the UPS guy to bring in the boxes o' UYI CD's...Chain outlets opened at midnight to sell them.. Boy times have changed...Chinese Democracy really missed out on that excitement due to leaks, internet sales etc...

I need to drop by this thread to say my sentiments for these 2 albums...

These albums have helped me through so much in my life. At a time when I needed something more softer than Appetite, these 2 albums let me get lost in a world of ballads, rock and pure melodic greatness. I must have spent a whole year listening to these albums non-stop when I first discovered them, and now they are still listened to along with GN'Rs whole catalogue.

Axl's lyrics, Slash's solos, Duff's basslines, Matts drums, Izzys superb rhythm and songwriting, along with Dizzy's brilliance. All of them made a truely unique album, and UYI 1&2 still stand the test of time, and will go down in history no doubt.  :)

Probably not as this is GN'R and not the usual mega big band.

Probably my two favorite albums of all time. Don't get me wrong, I obviously LOVE Appetite and Lies, but these just added so much more depth and truly showcased Axl's musical genius. I've also never agreed that they should have been broken down and released as one album instead.

I hear that. Out of all the GNR records, if I were to go to a dessert island and only got to take 3, it'd be CD and both UYI's

I got mine from record stop also , 2 weeks before the release, I went to sachem HS, so it was right down the street. The oweners took prepayment, and called when they had it in, and it was a full 2 weeks before.:)

UYI deserve a

Where else can we find songs that will catch all your attention, lasting over 10 minutes, and not even one second is boring or repetitive?

And...

What other bands can write and record 2 and a half hours of music, not containing even one "filler"?

UYI sure is epic

Agree with everything that's been said - both albums are works of art that continue to amaze and delight my aural senses 20 years on.  :)

I was on holiday in the US at the time, travelling up the west coast, and on the day the records were released I was in San Francisco.  I remember walking the city to find a record shop and the excitement with which I slipped the first cassette into my walkman.  I had both albums on continuous loop in my ears for the remainder of my trip and still regularly listen to them today.

I'd heard 'Estranged' live in Germany a month or so before and it'd given me goosebumps then, but even so I wasn't prepared me for the intensity of hearing the albums in their entirety.  As far as I was concerned, UYI elevated Axl from being an outstanding frontman with a unique vocal style, to a musical genius and lyrical poet.  A viewpoint from which I've never waivered and one which I felt was more than substantiated with the release of CD; an album of unsurpassed excellence.

I think if Gn'R condensed UYI and released it as 1 album it'd be just as historic as AFD is.

Not exactly the songs I would have picked, but I imagine these are the songs that would have made the final cut.

Right Next Door to Hell
Don't Cry
November Rain
The Garden
Don't Damn Me
Coma
Civil War
Yesterdays
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Estranged
You Could Be Mine
