Is the booklet the same as the Red Hand cover? Or is it a third alternate as well?

It's weird how these "easter egg" versions of CD keep popping up in random stores.  I wonder if they'll ever get around to putting these out so everyone can see the correct booklets.

Axl said the one which went out originally was the draft one.

Well, he said the "real" ones had all artwork. Not sure about this particular one (grenade) since someone says it might be fake. He did mention a "How are you - Grenade" cover.

The "red hand" cover is real, that's the one used in Rock Band. The booklet is all artwork and contains a letter from Axl.

Anyone read German that could give us some more info?  Or at least ask him for better quality scans or at least a pic of the back.  Still skeptical.

the german dude went to a "Media Markt" store in Germany just to look for some discs and/or DVDs. when randomly searching through "G" and "Guns N' Roses" there, he found 2 sealed copies of "Chinese Democracy" CD with an alternate cover. he asked some dude working there about it and he meant smth. general that it wouldnt be anything special with (mostly bigger) bands releasing CDs with alternate covers, he said Michael Jackson's "Invincible" did have 4 different covers (obviously that person didnt know s*it about GN'R  :hihi:). the fan then asked him to look out if there'd be more copies in the back of the store (this is a BIG technique store here in Germany by the way) but there weren't.
the german fan bought both copies, opened one, scanned and posted some of the booklet/info. codenummer/EAN of the disc is "6 0251790609 9"

asked some dude working there, he checked the EAN-code in the computer system and that one aint registered there.
when asking him about why not having a CD there being released about 3 years ago, he said they could order it to me but only the normal version  >:(

Seems too me that if these were fake someone went too a lot of work. And if your going to fake them why plant them in a store at store price? lol The other ones that came up on ebay went cheap. Cause no one saw them. No one posted on a board that they were on there to get a high bid. Looks like the person that sold the others had no idea what they had.

No, he got two copies. There will be more, since nobody just makes two copies of something.
They are imports, that gus had unbelievable luck to get those. There are probably more copies out there somewhere. I guess you need to be lucky to get one.

i did ask that dude in the german forum for some good quality pics of the discs and booklet. lets hope he "can" do it and is up for doing that.

If it is real, I like the artwork for "Catcher" though I prefer the "original" one with the distressed human form holding his head.
The "Sorry" skeletons are cool too, but again, prefer the original with the open skull.

And the new "Prostitute" artwork doesn't do anything for me at all.  In fact, I find it pretty lame.  The "Prostitute" artwork in the real booklet is fantastic.

And I really like the grenade cover, though I prefer the bloody hand one.  Would be nice to have the choice though.  Would be cool to get different versions of the album with the different artwork in each one.

Pretty sure that sku was available from BB (and a couple of other retailers) back when CD was released.  I remember the discussions, when trying to preorder, about the different cover variations (A, B, and C...but with no pics).

I wonder if the plan all along was to release a re-issue with new cover art ,etc. Or if not, was the artwork we got on CD, a "quick solution" and was the only artwork available at the time of release, even though Axl wanted these?.

I was just thinking, all of these new alternate covers are what I actually imagined the booklet to have looked like before the release.

I think that was "A" plan at one time.  Who knows if the band and record company were ever on the same page on any front though.  It sure doesn't seem like it.

Hmmm. While I enjoyed reading 'Axl's' little essay on China, I'm sort of glad that it didn't make it into the CD booklet that was released. It would have given people the idea this was a really 'political' album when, as a whole, it really isn't.

I don't think they're fake or a bootleg at all... too much coincidence... and it certainly doesn't look like a bootleg.

Second of all it's pretty damn a coincidence everyone starting to actually getting this cds in the same period of time.

So here's my opinion... and i'm sure a lot of you will say that's not possible and i'm sure no one will actually think I'm making sense, but here it goes anyways...

I think the people that have been selling this on ebay or say they found it in the store, are actually people that were offered this cd's by the band/camp themselves, and now they're just making a buck or two with it or showing it off on websites, because i believe from what i could gather this covers releases are coming out really really soon!

The band's answer is the typical answer of a band suggesting you to buy the album with the covers when it actually comes out OTHER then buying the album from this other people who are trying to make a quick buck or simply just showing it on the boards.

I know for a fact that there were a couple of guys that got the cds with this covers from the camp, cause they knew a member or certain people in the camp. This actually happened back in 2008.

With CD alternative covers coming out to the stores real soon, they're just trying to show it off or make a quick buck before it's officially released...

That is my 2 cents.

We will all be able to buy them soon in our local stores, just be patient. And they will cost a miserable amount of 15 euros or 12 dollars or so.

I would buy loads of copies of the album if it was re-released... because I would know in my heart that this was the version that Axl wanted, compared to the art that was released. Regardless of the album art though, this album is no doubt the best album ever in my book, so another excuse to purchase CD is very much welcomed.

Also I want to add that I work at Birmingham Airport at World Duty Free, and I usually have a few hours spare to start my shift. So every night I listen to CD all the way through, and I can't believe all of the noises and sounds that are hidden under the overall layers. It's definitely worth listening to CD multiple times, because you will be surprised at what you discover!!!!!.

I agree, playing around with equaliser setting then play CD on the hifi often yields a surprise or two each time I hear CD

Regardless, I wouldn't re-buy a cd just because it had a new album cover. It would have to contain unheard or remixed songs for me to consider buying an additional copy.

Once I have an opportunity to pick up the album, I'll buy whichever album cover is available at that time.

I'm guessing if the other booklet(s) were released there would be substantial royalties to pay the artists, which may mean the band or label could lose money.

But it would be a cool thing for the fans. I'm sure best buy could shift some of it's remaining stock too if they switched the booklets without having to slash the price.

Not to my knowledge no, but it has been widely known that CD's release was rushed through too quick. And there was various mistakes in the booklet I believe, which would indicate this to be true. So I'm guessing that it's not that far from the truth that Axl and GN'R felt that the release was rushed through with little promotion. So if the CD was to get re-released, one would think it would be a much more "accurate" portrayal of what Axl wanted this CD to look like with all of the album art included...
