Title: Tommy Stinson To Deliver One Man Mutiny Next Month
Post by: jarmo on July 13, 2011, 11:01:17 PM
Michelle Roche sent over news about the new Tommy Stinson album and a special residency in NYC: Stinson, founding member of The Replacements, and current bass player for Guns N' Roses and Soul Asylum, will release his second solo effort, One Man Mutiny, on his own Done To Death Music label (distributed by Redeye) on August 30, 2011.

Stinson will donate a portion of the net proceeds from the sale of the album to the Timkatec Schools in Haiti. Last summer, Stinson held an on-line auction and raised over $40,000 for the schools, which have housed and provided skilled trade education for abandoned and orphaned youths in the P?tionville district of Port-au-Prince for over ten years.

The schools' fund-raising needs have drastically increased in the wake of the 2010 earthquake, and as a result Stinson remains committed to his on-going effort to raise funds for them.

One Man Mutiny is Stinson's most fully realized effort to date in both production quality and craftsmanship of song. "I'm finding it a lot more interesting to make music these days," says Tommy. "Especially given the musical climate as of the last few years ? there are a lot of people complaining about how bad it is. I am actually embracing the challenges." This album is also a family affair for Tommy ? his fianc?e Emily Roberts sings harmonies on many of the songs and lead on his first ever duet, "Destroy Me," while her uncle Chip Roberts' slide guitar playing flavors the album from beginning to end. The album was produced by Phillip Broussard, Jr. (who has worked on records for such groups as Red Hot Chili Peppers and Weezer as well as Tommy's 2004 solo effort, Village Gorilla Head) and recorded at Tommy's Bipolarbear studios in both Los Angeles and suburban Philadelphia. The exception would be "One Man Mutiny," which was recorded with Guns N' Roses members Dizzy Reed and Richard Fortus in the restaurant of the Conrad Hotel in Brussels, Belgium on a day off from their 2010 world tour, which was documented on video (along with all sorts of other adventures on the road with GnR) on Tommy's website. The album was mixed by Sean Beavan (GnR, Nine Inch Nails, Village Gorilla Head).

Stinson, whose career began at the tender age of 13, has spent his entire life thus far making music and touring incessantly, leaving an indelible mark in the world of music and pop culture. After the Replacements stopped playing in 1991, Stinson went on to form his Faces-flavored group Bash & Pop and the more straightforward Perfect. His first solo release, Village Gorilla Head, was released in 2004 receiving praise from the critics and the fans. In 2005, Stinson also scored his first movie ("Catch and Release" with Jennifer Garner) with BT. Stinson is currently helping Soul Asylum put the finishing touches on their upcoming release and is touring with the group this summer.

Stinson will hold a Thursday night "residency" at the Bowery Electric in New York City on August 11, 18, and 25.

Tour dates include:

Thursday, August 11 Bowery Electric New York, NY
Saturday, August 13 The Note Westchester, PA
Thursday, August 18 Bowery Electric New York, NY
Wednesday, August 24 Maxwell's Hoboken, NJ
Thursday, August 25 Bowery Electric New York, NY (CD release show)
Saturday, August 27 Met Caf? Providence, RI

Tommy Stinson Returns With Solo Album

Tommy Stinson is best known as a founding member of the Replacements, but next month, he'll return with his second solo album, One Man Mutiny, and SPIN is premiering one of the standout tracks, "Meant to Be."

Tommy Stinson, "Meant to Be" >> DOWNLOAD >> http://www.spin.com/audio/download/90698/03_Meant_to_Be.mp3 (http://www.spin.com/audio/download/90698/03_Meant_to_Be.mp3)

Stinson delivers a bright, poppy rocker featuring gorgeous boy-girl harmonies and swooning slide guitar. That's his fianc? Emily Roberts singing in the background, and while Stinson's lyrics have a dark take on relationships ? "It's about the awkward and tragic side of dating people you shouldn't be trying to date," he tells SPIN ? it doesn't sound like there's any trouble in his own personal life.

"I really think that Emily?s background vocal idea set in motion a new direction for the entire record," he says. "I had long wanted to have a female voice to sing with, and had finally found one."

One Man Mutiny is out on Stinson's imprint Done to Death Music on August 30.

It's a GREAT song. Two more weeks to Bowery Electric!

half-joking side note:

Anyone else find it ever-so-slightly ironic they refer to Tommy as a 'founding member of the Replacements' and NO mention of him as the bassist of Guns N' Roses? Perhaps Spin is still holding a grudge from "Get In The Ring", even though Bob Jr has long departed?

I like Meant To Be. One Man Mutiny was nice too, in a Dylan way.
Great background vocals on Meant To Be too!

Edit: I found the CD cover on Amazon in good quality, I added it to the first post (hope it's ok Jarmo!)

Nice article.

Tommy Stinson's One Man Mutiny

August 4, 2011

Tommy Stinson lives in my basement. That is, he used to. Until he moved from the Philadelphia burb of Media to New York?s bucolic Hudson Valley. I even wrote a song about it which I thought was exceedingly clever. It began: "Tommy Stinson lives in my basement. He says he used to be a Replacement." Meanwhile, Tommy was writing the real songs and bringing them to life just a few steps down from my kitchen table just about every day he wasn?t off on tour with Guns N Roses or Soul Asylum. He and my husband, guitarist Chip Roberts, spent hours and hours these last two plus years submerged in a dark room that was filled with guitars and basses and ukeleles and drums and tambourines and marimbas and all sorts of stringed instruments from other countries with exotic sounding names and lots of recording equipment. Every so often, I would venture downstairs to throw in another load of laundry or to give a listen to a riff they?d just come up with. One time, Tommy put me on the big marching drum with a tambourine because they were into a groove that needed a loud ringing beat. He kept yelling, "Hit it harder! Bang the rim!" When we were done, half the jingles had been banged off the tambourine and there were wood shards from the drum flying everywhere.

When our niece, Emily Roberts, told us she was seeing the bass player from Guns N Roses and that he used to be in The Replacements, we knew the name but we didn?t know what to expect. Would he be all punky and snarly? I have to admit that somehow I missed most of the Replacements era and really just had a passing memory of a band that passed out a lot. And drank a lot. Maybe not quite Sex Pistols but close. So it was with quite a bit of stunned delight that the night we first met Tommy in our kitchen, he shyly gave his "Aunt Deb" and "Uncle Chip" a warm hug. Hair still spiky, shirt and skinny pants still ripped, but a sweet guy that we knew right off the bat we would love.

When Emily and Tommy?s daughter Lulah was born, we watched a deeply involved dad take shape before our eyes. We got to know Tommy?s other daughter Ruby, a lovely young woman and there?s nothing like watching American Idol together around the dinner table to set off that daughter/daddy dynamic. Especially when your daddy is a rock star. We got to know Anita, Tommy?s mom, who dealt with a lot from all those early years, and we got to know Tom, Tommy?s stepdad. We see this daily side of this guy who was recruited into a band by his big brother Bob at the tender age of 11 and learned about life on the road. Literally.

I mention all this because it all factors at some point or another into the new album One Man Mutiny which has been four years in the making. Everything up till now has shaped this record. Paul Westerberg?s voice sometimes comes out of Tommy?s mouth. The spirit of Bob Stinson is always hovering nearby. There was a lot of craziness during this time. There was also a lot of joy. There was a lot of silliness that went into making this record. When visiting our Uncle Albert in Hudson, NY, Chip and Tommy broke out into a country tinged lament about drinking one too many and all of a sudden, yodeling became involved. Albert told them to get out to the back porch and write a song so they did. I?m happy to say the yodeling made the cut on the record  ("Zero to Stupid"). When making the video for "Don?t Deserve You," Tommy had a dream  about an evil rabbit and so he found an Energizer bunny type costume for Chip to wear with spooky makeup. What does it have to do with the song? Doesn?t matter. Creative ideas were popping up all the time and plugged in wherever and whenever. On this record, there is the most heartachingly gourgeous song that began as Tommy singing solo and harmony with himself. He made his voice sound so much like Emily?s that he realized he should actually use HER for the harmonies. "Destroy Me" ended up as a duet that Emily worked and worked on for so many rough nights and then one night it completely clicked and if it doesn?t make the hair stand up on your arms, you?re not human. "It?s a Drag" was written on a road trip down to the Chesapeake Bay and was pretty much fleshed out in the hour and a half it took to get down there. When the album was being worked on in LA, I was visiting and actually got to do a few ?woo woos? throughout the song. Talk about a Stones rave-up. It feels like "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Gimme Shelter" mashed together. "Meant to Be" is a masterful piece of songwriting. In fact, Tommy is one hell of a songwriter. He?s always jotting lyrics and thoughts into numerous notebooks and when he was rehearsing for one of his mini-tours, there would be lyrics of many songs of his, new and old, printed out. I continue to be amazed at his command of language. Around our house, in the car and at shows, we were all listening to John Doe and Queens of the Stone Age and Cheap Trick. All of it figures in.

Fans of Perfect and Bash and Pop and Tommy?s 2004 solo outing, Village Gorilla Head, will find many favorite songs on the 10 song One Man Mutiny. There?s a great pop sensibility running throughout the record. The playfulness of "Match Made in Hell" with its happy go lucky rickety tickety gait is an ironic look at relationships for better and worse. The title song "One Man Mutiny" was written while on tour with GnR in Brussels and recorded at 3AM in the dining room of The Conrad Hotel with Guns mates Dizzy Reed and Richard Fortus. The album was originally going to be called All This Way For Nothing but when this song came along it spoke volumes about where Tommy was in the moment. Frank Ferrer, also from Guns, lends a hand on drums on this record as does George Manney, a Philadelphia musician and film producer.

Most notable on this record is the presence of Tommy?s fiancee Emily Roberts. Her voice is a perfect complement to Tommy?s. Sometimes it?s hard to tell where one stops and the other begins. And Uncle Chip brings his slide guitar and personality to many of the songs on the album. (Basement breaks usually consisted of a trip up the street for a "snack" or upstairs for a cooking lesson. Tommy?s quite a whiz in the kitchen too, it turns out.) Producer Phillip Broussard, Jr. worked with Tommy previously on Village Gorilla Head and spent many a late night session in Tommy?s Bipolarbear studio in LA after Tommy finished up Guns daily rehearsals.

One Man Mutiny will be released on Tommy?s own Done To Death music label and will be available digitally as well as on CD and vinyl August 30. You?ll be able to find it everywhere you can find records and through tommystinson.com. and it?s being supported by several shows sprinkled through the summer (dates listed below).
A portion of the proceeds from this album will benefit Timkatec, the educational organization in Haiti that helps get kids off the streets and into school. Tommy has been involved with fundraising efforts for this incredibly effective project for several years now.

A cool review of the CD from The Morton Report:

Tommy Stinson, One Man Mutiny. Really and truly, this one-time Replacements bassist should have replaced Bill Wyman in the Rolling Stones. Nothing against the Brits choosing Daryl Jones to take that position, but they really missed the boat. Because if ever someone could have been a Stone, it was Stinson. He joined the 'Mats when he was only 12, and lived for rock and roll like only a few ever get to. Plus the rocker had the real attitude. He may be a generation or two behind Keith Richards, but no one ever came close to matching that swagger and soul like Tommy Stinson did. And lucky for us, he still does.

There are songs here for every occasion, from the Stoneseque knockabout of "It's a Drag" to the crushing ballad "Come to Hide." No one is writing or playing better rock right now than Tommy Stinson, and while he was never the frontperson in the Replacements, he kept the fires burning probably knowing it was only a matter of time before he'd have his chance. After his Bash & Pop and Perfect bands, One Man Mutiny puts him smack dab in the middle of the action, and he doesn't waste a moment.

It is said that we will all have our moments if we are patient and put in the time. Stinson never backed off, and no doubt had his dedication tested over and over. But that's rock 'n' roll for you: quitters need not apply to the profession. It's a life that chooses you, not the other way around. Minneapolis might be buried in snow when the young boy had to carry a bass taller than himself through it to practice in freezing basements; the light shined down on him and showed the way. The beauty of this new music proves that light never goes out if you believe. Tommy Stinson is a believer.

Sorry to bump an old old thread, but this seemed better than starting a new one as there's already a lot of info in it.

Anyway, I just bought the title track from OMM in iTunes - the one that was recorded in an hotel in Brussels, Belgium during the last Euro leg - and like VGH I really like the mood of the music.

My question: my iTunes account is almost empty, gonna have to recharge. In the meantime, can you guys help me with 4 songs off the album that are your favourites? That way I know what to buy :)

Thanks!
