Title: Greatest Hits Tops The 5 Million Mark.
Post by: MR.BROWNSTONE on June 08, 2011, 03:39:22 PM
Guns N' Roses' 2004 compilation Greatest Hits tops the 5 million mark in sales this week. It's the band's second album to reach this plateau. Its 1987 debut, Appetite For Destruction, has sold 5,082,000 copies since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. (It sold millions more copies in its first four years of release.)

I thought I heard people say that CD topped 5 million in sales, is that not correct?

Not in the US.  But, I think that was meant as a worldwide figure.  Soundscan does not track worldwide sales.

Should this be in a different section? Just repeating what's been given!

I know that not everyone was happy about the release of this album, including GN'R members. But I have say that I think it served it's purpose really well, and I definitely feel it made millions of more people GN'R fans around 2004-2006.  : ok:

Didn't both Illusion albums each pass 5 million in the states.  I could have sworn they both did about 7 million each.

Yes your right...

Both Illusion albums have gone 7 times platinum I think, so it would seem like the above article just failed to realise/notice this.  :P

Or..

It depends on when in 1991 Soundscan started monitoring sales. The UYI's came out in september of 91 and could easily have sold a couple million a few weeks ahead.

Soundscan started prior to the Sept 1991 UYI releases..I recall due to Soundscans way of tracking Skid Row's Slave to the Grind was the 1st rock album to chart at #1 duting it's 1st week of sales..
