Title: Just a Note of Personal Thanks
Post by: BumbleBuzz on February 12, 2011, 04:07:46 AM
Recently I got a guitar pick sent to me in the mail by Ron Thal.

Unbelievably, a man who has toured the world with perhaps the biggest band of their generation and beyond, took the time to go to the Post Office when he got home from the Middle East and put a piece of plastic in the post for me. He didn't even have to be reminded, like I would dare, and remembered me asking him to do so 3 weeks earlier while he should have been lying in the sun in Australia. While it essentially was a simple act this particular act of kindness did not go unnoticed - Ron is one of the reasons I got a Distinction in my final year college Radio project as well - so he has helped me out more than once.

I don't want to boast about this, that's not the point of this thread, it's just to say a further personal word of thanks. I think it speaks volumes when you can connect with these musicians on a one to one basis - it simply says a lot about their attitude and kindess towards fans - from being able to shake DJ's hand in Dublin to Ron taking the time to do all the interviews he has for me.

A lot of people bandmouth GNR, give negative criticism and press, but the truth is that just like you and me they're is a very human element that takes away the stardom and the supposed glamour. It's this element that I enjoy most about GNR, about being able to simply connect one to one, and share experiences and times and places.

Thanks guys, I owe you a beer at least!

That was really kind of him! Im not a fan of Ron's solo albums, they're a little too System of a Downish for me, but i love how Ron is always nice to everyone on tour, and how he connects with the GNR fanbase and his own solo career fans and obviously his work in GNR.

Great Read!  : ok:

It's great. Congrats!

But I think you should say "thanks" via private messages and not publicly because, are you aware that thousand and thousand of people will ask Ron for a pick after this story?

Lol, poor Ron.  :hihi:

But once again he has showed what a great person he is, doing the little things is what makes him great with the fans.  :)

Sure, I thanked him privately a few months ago, the reason I'm posting now is because the run of picks he had made for the last tour are probably all gone so anyone asking now will be out of luck - tough, but fair - until the next bout of touring

Of the two shows I went to on the recent tour the chances of catching a pick literally depended on who you were prepared to smack in the face to make sure you caught it. That kind of stuff annoys me and I don't like to injure someone else in trying to catch a piece of plastic. So I get most of my picks direct from the artists themselves.

That's cool.  He signed one of those paper wristbands for me after a Guns concert in Worcester, MA several years ago.  He took the time to shake a lot of people hands, take pictures, and sign a lot of stuff for people.

I think, if anything, people will bombard him with comments about how nice of a guy he is..

Like we don't already do that enough.....lol
