Title: Chinese Democracy + the production of Oh My God: Better or worse?
Post by: duga on November 14, 2010, 06:11:11 PM
Just listened to Oh my god for the first time in maybe a year. What I really like is the production + the voice of Axl (as always).

What do you prefer: the production of OMG or CD?

I think if Chinese Democracy was released in 2002 - 2003, the production would be very much like Oh My God. I think during 2006-2007, Axl changed his direction in what he wanted Chinese Democracy represented in terms of style. I think Axl changed alot during those years, with also changing his clothing style from Jerseys to unbuttoned classy shirts.

I think Axl wanted to go in a more Classic Rock direction rather than industrial/experimental which we saw in 1999-2002. I can't say if I would have prefered a production like Oh My God on CD, as it's hard to say only having heard one song produced like that.

But I'm happy with CD, and I feel it's the best album ever.  ;)

I think OMG had a really rushed-in production and the result was a really busy track with almost no stereo effect in the mixing. That helped a lot to make it sounding like a mess, but there's so many cool ideas there is not even funny how they fucked up with it.

The song has processed guitars that sounded like a heavy turbine. There's an accoustic guitar in the intro that almost gets buried. There's tons of overdubbed vocals laying extra tracks almost sounding like keys. There's synths with eerie sounds that blended with the processed guitars. Way too much stuff IMHO.

Please, dont get me wrong: I LOVE Oh My God. It's a great song and a trully hidden gem nowadays, with a fenomanal performance from Axl, Freese and Tommy. I just think it could have done better if it got stripped down a little.

Chinese Democracy (the album) is much more intelligent in terms of sounds - you can listen to the instruments and Axl's voice much better. Even Riad, which has a similar arrangement because of the drums and rhythm guitar with wah, sounds better.
