How can they Not Play in Melb??

Meldrum is a very reliable source but Townsville makes no sense at all to me. Especially over nearby Brisbane and also Melbourne.

Perhaps there is a festival I'm unaware of? My guess is he rang around his contacts and got some reasonable info but it is really hard to fathom.

Interesting to say the least.

Axl and the band really disliked to main concert arena in Perth last time round from memory. I'm going to start saving for Adelaide just in case. Two shows would be amazing.

I would just like to voice my opinion or should I say disgust at the fact that GNR will be NOT playing
in Melbourne Australia this December.  I understand they're being paid a small fortune to headline
the V8 Supercar Race in Sydney (and something to do with contractual obligations not to play within
a certain radius) but to include Melbourne within that radius (1hour plane trip/8hour car drive) is obsurd.
I'm in my forties and I've never missed a GNR concert - 1988, 1993 and 2007 ! 
We, in Australia, are always squeezed into any world tour - it's just not fair !!!
To agree to not play in Melbourne (music capital of Australia) is disrespectful to all loyal fans - not everyone
has that flexibility with work and family to drop all and go to Sydney.
Any thoughts and/or comments ?

I find it very hard to complain to be honest.
Go back 5 years and I bet most Aussie GnR fans would have thought they would ever see Guns again, let alone 2 tours (07 and 10).

I am flying to Sydney for that show and will be doing the same to Adelaide (Townsville is a bit tough for me).

I try to focus on the positive of the band currently being active and the fact we have an opportunity to see them if we choose rather than getting upset that they cant make it to Melbourne this time.

I have no expectations so therefore am over the moon when something happens.

Besides, its not like Axl said "fuck Melbourne, we aint gunna do it", its just how things have worked out this time around.

Be happy that there is a Guns n Roses in 2010 and be excited that they will be in Australia this year!  ;D

People can talk shit about nu-metal all they want, KORN are awesome. Only seen them live once, but they were great. Incredible energy. To see them AND Guns the same night? Would be a dream come true, except I live pretty much as far away from Australia as you can get.  :crying:

I remember from the two GNR shows I saw this summer they played some Korn over the PA before the show started. Damn I wish could go to this.  :drool:

I flew to Adelaide via Melbourne from Canberra to see them last time round and it was worth to four flight trip plus accommodation.

I booked Adelaide when the East coast dates had sold out only for more to announced after my booking, still didn't complain. Its a gift, they don't owe us shit. Take it or leave it.

On the flip side I still can not for the life of me what made the promoter consider a Townsville show at all, dude must have way to much money or way to good drugs.

The city has a population of barely over a hundred thousand. GNR have played bigger crowds then the entire populace. I can't see any more then eight thousand tickets being sold, maybe ten with regional travelers if the tickets were cheaper. I'm not even sure where the will hold it, the 16,000 spot football stadium? Might as well play my backyard. Where-as Melbourne for example is the largest urban sprawl in the southern hemisphere. Even Canberra would be a more suitable bet with around four hundred thousand people and half decent venues. Again, I'm happy for the QLD fans just find it hard to fathom why the decision was made in the first place.

Sydney tickets already payed for, Adelaide next week. I'm leaving for QLD from southern NSW tomorrow, should have holidayed in December instead.

As far as I know, it's up to the promoters to decide where to hold concerts.

They find the spot, book the band and the band plays.

I guess sometimes bands can make suggestions on where to play.


But just because a city is bigger than another doesn't mean they'll sell more tickets. It's not always that easy. Maybe the other place has a more suitable venue? Things like that can affect the decision on where to play....

My understanding is the NSW government forked out big dollars to get them to perform at the Telstra 500 and they have the say where they can and can't play and how many shows!

is that a normal thing for Australia? Seems like you're leaving out a huge potential fanbase. I've been to two GN'R shows this year (Hamilton/Toronto), Iron Maiden, and Megadeth/Slayer, and there was a good number of younger fans at all of 'em... but most shows in Canada are all ages unless it's a small bar/club show that don't have a separate drinking area...

Seems a little strange yes. One would think an "all ages" policy should apply for such big venues.

Speaking of big venues, this concert in Perth will apparently be held on a motor racetrack.

Perth Motorplex is a motorsport venue located at Kwinana Beach, Western Australia. It caters mainly for drag racing and speedway, although other events are held there regularly. Over 275,000 patrons attend the venue each year to many varied events. The Perth Motorplex holds rounds of the ANDRA Drag Racing Championship and World Series Sprintcar championship.

Yeah kinda a strange venue from where big concerts like this are normally held over here.  Surprised also that an outdoor event like this is 18+, often they have separate "wet areas" set up so they can make sure it's all ages.  Not that I have had to worry about ID for a few years.  :hihi:

They get respect from me for making the effort to come all the way over here to the west coast, many bands don't bother.

Seems to be a real "motorsport" orientated theme to the Oz tour.

They are both on the same day as the first concerts just late in the arvo with the original concerts on that same night. 

The Perth one is actually in a different location too.  That's great I will get to see GNR twice in the same day!  Just wondering if anyone can confirm if this is accurate.  I mean if it's on their myspace then I assume it's true?  I just can't find tickets to the Perth one that's all, or any mention of it anyhwere else??  The link on myspace only takes you through to purchase tickets for the Motorplex gig that night which I already have my tickets for, I can't find where to buy the Supreme Court Gardenes one?

I think they just changed the place/time but didn't delete the original info?

Hmm maybe?  The Adelaide one certainly implies what you said.  The newly added gig is at 5:00pm and the second one at 7:00pm - same venue.  Seems like they just moved it forward??

Police to mingle with fans

Site manager Tim Bradsmith with Perth Motorplex general manager Kevin Prendegast... ?everyone who attends the Guns ?N? Roses concert should feel safe?.

POLICE will have a ?strong? presence at next month?s Guns ?N? Roses concert at the Perth Motorplex in Kwinana Beach but say they expect no problems like last month?s bikie brawl.

The complex management, police, the Town of Kwinana and the promoter will finalise security plans in the coming days for the concert on December 11, which is expected to draw up to 15,000 people.

Peel District Office Inspector Peter Hatch said police were working closely with all parties to plan for the event.

?There will be a strong police presence at the concert to deter any potential offending or antisocial behaviour,? he said.

?However, for operational reasons it is not proposed to elaborate on the numbers of police attending or the areas they will be drawn from.?

A brawl between rival gangs at a motorcycle drag event last month left three Finks gang members in hospital.

Motorplex general manager Kevin Prendergast said the ?level? of the incident was not yet known but concert-goers should feel safe at the complex.

?That was a one-off incident,? he said. ?We are obviously disappointed but we are working our way through any issues for the concert with the police and events promoter.

?We take on board anything we learn from it but we don?t believe it has impacted this event. It could have happened anywhere.?

Mr Prendergast said the motorplex hosted about 120 events each season attended by 250,000 people and had recorded 2.5 million visitors in 10 years.

?The concert is a great event to have for us and this region and we look forward to it,? he said.

Kwinana officer in charge Senior Sergeant Trevor Troy said police had no information to suggest a repeat of the brawl.

He said police would maintain a presence at the event and surrounding suburb, but would only play a supporting role to motorplex security staff.

?We will take our lead from their security,? he said.

?We don?t expect any problems and police would most likely just patrol the gate and car park area,? he said.

About 150 security staff were expected to be at the event.

V8 Supercars Australia has announced popular rock band Spiderbait and talented newcomers, The Delta Riggs, have been added to the Saturday 4 December concert bill.

Guns N? Roses will headline the gig which will take place at ANZ Stadium after all the thrills and spills of the day?s racing.

Going to the Adelaide gig and am really excited about it, sadly I think the Entertainment Centre is a pretty crappy venue....if only it was Thebby Theatre :) oh well.

My mother has always liked GNR and is a bit of an Axl fan I think. I told her she was welcome to come and I'd buy her a ticket and she went ' no , no, I'm too old I would look out of place" and I said "Mum the fact you are in your 60's and wanna go to a GNR gig makes you cool so anyone with an issue can fuck themselves". Nearly lost her a year ago and she was in intensive care for 10 days so will be proud to taker her out....can't wait.

Not entirely sure....Thebarton Theatre is just that a theatre's capacity is 3000 or so and the entertainment centre is about 15000. Logistically it has to be the entertainment centre but as far as sound quality and mood there is no comparison IMO.

I saw GNR a few yrs back at the Ent centre and the band was great but was far too quiet and Axl was barely audible.....which for me is just totally unaceotable that the main attraction of the band is inaudible. Plus this time I expect the crowd to be a little thin, and smaller venues have a more intimate feel where you feel like a friend of the band rather than an observer.

I'll be at Homebush by ten thirty, watch the  V8 top ten shoot out at half past eleven then be at the nearest watering hole until the race starts at two thirty.

More importantly though, what time are the stadium gates opening? The website doesn't give times rather says after the race concludes.

I want to be front and center but don't want to make the wifey camp out at the gates for hours only to sit through a horrible and a mediocre opening two sets.

Anybody recall how many people showed to the last two Sydney concerts? That will give me a rough idea.

Axl Rose landed in Sydney this morning for the Australian leg of the Guns N' Roses tour

THE illusive Axl Rose obviously prefers to let the music do the talking after his subdued arrival in Sydney this morning for the Guns N' Roses tour.

A polite Rose quickly pulled himself up from dropping the ``f'' bomb when asked if he had any message for his loyal fans, simply telling them to ``have a good show''.

The band were briefly in transit before heading to Townsville by private jet for the opening concert on their four-date tour.

Rose and his entourage are expected to return to Sydney tomorrow to prepare for their headlining set at the Sydney Telstra 500 championships on Saturday.

The current line-up of the Gunners includes Tommy Stinson on bass, Dizzy Reed on keys, Bumblefoot on guitar, Chris Pitman on keys, DJ Ashba on guitar, Richard Fortus on rhythm guitar and Frank Ferrer on drums.

A few of the band members will attend a meet-and-greet BBQ for fans at the Billy Hyde store in Mona Vale on Friday afternoon.

The story says Axl flew into Sydney today and makes out like him and the band are flying together to Townsville, the rest of the guys have been there for 2 days! Obviously they flew in early and he's travelling alone!

I'm super pumped now.
I'm flying from Melbourne to Sydney on Friday and coming home Sunday then off to Adelaide on Tuesday and back on Wednesday.
Going to be an awesome/hectic week.

A POLICE escort and a guarantee of no red lights should ensure Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose is delivered from his hotel to the stage on time for his show tonight

Rose was expected to arrive in Townsville late yesterday ahead of one of the biggest rock concerts North Queenslanders have seen this year.

Promoter Andrew McManus, who inspected the Reid Park site yesterday, said everything was organised to ensure Rose arrived on time and Guns N' Roses hit the stage at 8.30pm in front of an expected crowd of 15,000 people.

``He'll be on stage on time,'' McManus guaranteed.

``The brilliance of the guy on stage means everyone will forget if he was five minutes late, which he won't be.''

The American band's worldwide manager Doc McGhee said Rose had never missed a show and didn't plan on starting now.

Fellow band members Dizzy Reed and DJ Ashba took a quick media call yesterday before they set off to explore Townsville.

``We've been looking forward to the Australian tour for a long time,'' DJ Ashba said.

``It's going to be fun and I can't wait to get out there and play a lot of the new album and the old stuff as well.''

Chinese Democracy is the band's latest album.

DJ Ashba said Townsville was a beautiful place and he wanted to go scuba diving.

Reed said it didn't matter if Guns N' Roses played in front of 50 people or 100,000 people, the show would still be the same.

``It's quality rock 'n roll music and there will be good times all round,'' he promised.

Tickets were still available to tonight's show and Reed encouraged everyone to go.

``Don't be that fool who doesn't go to the show,'' he said.

Reed said Australians had embraced their music more than Americans had.

``We've been received very well,'' he said.

McManus said it had taken a week to set up the stage, which came from Korea and 35 trucks carried the equipment.

It takes more than 250 people to run a production like this from the truck drivers to roadies, cleaners and stage crew.

The band plays the V8 Supercar Championships in Sydney on Saturday and Adelaide on Tuesday.

Guns N' Roses play at Reid Park tonight. Gates open at 4pm. Shihad play at 5.50pm, KoRn 7pm and Guns N' Roses 8.30pm. Tickets still available and range from $110-$200 plus booking fees. Phone 4727 9797 or they're available at the door.

Awesome, can't wait for the Sydney show. I saw them at Acer in '07 and it was the best concert I've ever seen (and I've been to a lot).

With all due respect to the race fans, I'm going there for the concert. I was also thinking that 4pm should be a good time to get there and I don't mind waiting for two opening acts if it means I'll be sure to get front row places.
Does anyone know at what time the gates open?

I really like Axl's calm and respectful nature, he is a legend but still remains grounded and aware of certain things. 

Absolutely,  the camera guy probably had good intentions. But still must be pretty annoying if someone is filming you from that close while you don't feel like being filmed.
Just need to pull through for the time it lasts or tell him to jizzoff but then the gossip people would get some more material. So there's not much of a choice I guess.

Very glad they are on the road again though... exciting times are coming...

Guns 'N Roses ready to rock Perth

THE wait is finally over with Guns?N?Roses set to rock the Perth Motorplex in Kwinana Beach tomorrow night and police say they are not expecting trouble.

Crews began transforming the drag strip into a stage on Wednesday and will complete it tomorrow morning with containers used to bring the production across the Nullarbor from Adelaide.

A spokeswoman for promoters Andrew McManus said about 12,000 fans were expected to flock to the Motorplex to get a taste of the band and enigmatic front man Axl Rose, who have sold more than 100 million albums since 1985.

She would not confirm rumours Rose would fly to the Motorplex by helicopter but said, ?it was being seriously considered?.

Kwinana will be the last Australian concert date for the band?s Chinese Democracy tour.

Police will have a strong presence on the evening with 40 officers patrolling the venue and surrounding suburbs, including rail and traffic police, and officers posted at the  gate and assisting security.

Kwinana Police officer-in-charge Trevor Troy said police were also considering using a booze bus and police van.

Senior Sergeant Troy, who will be among the police contingent, said he expected no repeat of a violent bikie brawl at the Motorplex in October, which left several Finks gang members in hospital.

 ?We expect the event to go smoothly, but anyone who behaves badly at the concert can expect us to act and charge them for their troubles,? he said.

?We will be mindful of the incident recently involving the outlaw motorcycle groups who came to loggerheads? we will have staff in the area and behind the scenes, at gates and in the vicinity to assist with security.?

Sen Sgt Troy said revellers should organise a designated driver, taxi or use public transport to get to and from the concert, as police would be tough on intoxicated drivers.

Hard rock bands KoRn and Shihad will also play at the concert.

A free bus will run to the concert from the Kwinana train station from 4.30pm and back following the concert.
