Title: Another Brain Interview - More About Remixes & Next Album...
Post by: sofine11 on July 19, 2010, 02:44:35 PM

I made an interview with the Guns N' Roses drummer Brian Mantia for my Guns N' Roses website GNR-Online BR. Check it out:

-You told me in 2009 that you would tour with Guns N' Roses on the upcoming tour, you would play the new songs, and Frank Ferrer would play the old songs. How was that decided and why didn't it happen?
Brian: I guess they couldn't pull it!

-Are you out of the band? If so, did you get any official confirmation? Give us details about that.
Brian: i'm out of the currant touring band. i hope i can still be a part of the recordings!!!

-In February 28, 2009, when asked if you were still in the band, Axl said "Last I checked. Brain works on several things with Guns either from his home or in the studio." How does that work?
Brian: i'm doing some top secret shit right now!!!!!!!!

-You brought a new style of drumming to Guns N' Roses. Before Josh Freese and you, the beats were very simple. You have kinda a alternative rock and funcky style. Did Axl ever asked play "like that" or "like this" or just played what you think would fit in the band?
Brian: he want's you to do you... and i love that!!!

-Did you rehearsaled with the band on 2009?
Brian: no i didn't rehearse

-You wrote The General. Despite very few people having heard it, it has become a legend in the Guns N' Roses world. What do you think about that?
Brian: it's an awesome jam... i hope it's released soon!!!!!!

-How would you feel if you found out that it would never be launched?
Brian: it will come out... the shits to good!!!!!

-There's a sample of 16 seconds that has been floating around for sometime, it's called Checkmate and some people claim it's The General. You confirmed that it's you playing, but is this bit really from The General?
Brian: i don't wanna give it up .

-Apart from The General, what other songs that didn't go on Chinese Democracy you helped to write?
Brian: a couple others, but i don't know what the working titles are.

-Many songs are left from the Chinese Democracy sessions. Do you recorded in all of them?
Brian: yes... most of them.

-Are there any plans on releasing this material? Would you know if there were plans?
Brian: no i wouldn't... i leave that shit for the suits. i'm just into makin' the MUSIC!!!!!

-Do you know if Frank Ferrer and Bumblefoot will re-record all of yours and Buckethead's parts?
Brian: you never know.

-How was the recording process? Each of you recorded your part alone? Was it common, in recording or in rehearsals, to the whole band play together, all each of you recorded and rehearsaled alone?
Brian: it was a combination of all those things... pretty much just like every recording i'm involved in.

-Let's talk about Buckethead. You recently workd with him on The Dragons of Eden and Iconography. Do you currently have any other projects with him?
Brian: we just recorded a five disk set called "Best Regards"

-Since Buckethead brought you to Guns N' Roses, how did you feel when he left?-
Brian: Pretty bad... He's my friend so it was very hard... I felt like I was losing a friend more then a band mate.

-You said that Axl asked to re-record note for note of Josh Freese's work, on the early 00s. When did you first record the "genuine" Brain?
Brian: Right after.... I did the josh thing then jumped right into brain!!!

-When did you last wrote or recorded something to Guns N' Roses?
Brian: Been doing some cool re-mixes for guns!!! That shit is sick!!! It's gonna rip peoples faces off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-What were your highlights with Guns N' Roses and which was the biggest frustration?
Brian: the live shows were always a highlight for me!!! i'm just bummed i'm not a part of that anymore.

-Thank you very much for the interview. Any message you would like to give to the fans?
Brian: Love Ya Guys!!!!!!!!!!

Why is Brain so talkative about GNR all of a sudden?  Whatever the reason may be, I like it.

Axl confirmed that the real title is "Jackie Chan" (maybe a working title anyway), so it has nothing to do with "The General".

Wasn't Axl sarcastic/ironic with the title "Jackie Chan"?.

Always thought that he was kidding...

So in a way Axl admited it was part of "The General" and also denied it?
I love being a GN'R fan who likes word play  :)

Yes.

No. Jackie's always been a HUGE Buster Keaton fan...and The general is one of Keaton's most famous movie. And since Jackie is Chinese...you know...Chinese...Chinese democracy...

Great interview but I was under the impression Brain was not a member of the band any longer....I saw his performance in Dublin in 2006 and then saw Frank in London the following month and I'll be honest, I don't want him back....Frank is a better live drummer and if he's performing live with the band he deserves to be their drummer

It depends what you looking for....

If you're looking for techinique, maybe Brain is the answer. But if you're looking for strength and power, Frank is the answer.

I see Brain as a studio guy. He seems to know a lot about loops and all about that...

Frank is my favourite. Damn...the way he hits the cymbals...

What rumour? what is there to even suggest they could be on rock band 3 to create a rumour? and what happened to the so called announcement you said the rock band guys were gonna make a couple of days after the thread you created at mygnr?
You start rumours with no bit of factual or indication whatsoever that they could even become reality!

Yeah, compare a outdoor festival show with a indoor own Gn'R show. That's really fair.

I agree. It was wrong to create the thread, all the talk about the Rock Band 3 was pure especulation and probably bullshit, although many people confirmed it. But that was the last time I came talking about nonsense rumors out of nowhere.
This Q&A is real, believe me. Ask Brian if you want, he will confirm you.

Cheers.

It seams that Brain still has a role to play in GNR. He`s not a member of the current touring group, but from my point of view he`s more a studio drummer. It would be damn cool too see both drummer on stage at one point! That would be awesome!

To be honest, I have always been secretly hoping this is the same deal with Buckethead. That he would still be a big part of the studio recordings and just isn't a touring member. That would please me greatly. It makes me so fucking happy that for all time, Buckethead will have his amazing contributions forever sealed in GN'R history for his amazing work on the masterpiece that is CD. I really hope CD isn't the end of Buckethead appearing on GN'R albums. Buckethead for me is THE reason I didn't give a fuck that Slash quite the band. Big trade up for Axl and GN'R. Boo fucking hoo Slash isn't in GN'R. But just fucking listen to Buckethead douche.

It must have been hard for Brain, to have the person who introduced you to GN'R, Buckethead, to just up and leave. I'm glad that Brain stayed close to GN'R and that he was the drummer for GN'Rs' comeback in 06.

Axl knows a good musician when he sees one, that's why he's keeping Brain and Robin on good terms. Axl even seems very complimentary towards Buckethead as of late, so who knows if he's leaving channels open for the future.

But as of now with the touring line-up, they are on fire and seem to up their game every show. I must say I feel that DJ, Bumble and Frank are doing Robin, buckethead and Brain very proud, at least live.

Wheres the proof that Robin left on good terms?

When asked if Robin was still in the band to tour, Axls' reply was that once GN'R was ready to tour, they would see where Robin was at in relation to touring.

Also Axl has since complimented Robin on a solo he has done on an upcoming song, he said it was like a Stevie Ray Vaughan solo.

I think that's enough evidence to suggest that Robin and Axl are still on good terms.  :)

With all due respect i dont think that suggests anything to be honest with you.. Complimenting a guy's work is not the same  as  being on good terms.

He complimented Slash's work before in 1999, he's not on good terms with him...
