Libertines, G N'R for festivals

Rock giants Guns N'Roses, Arcade Fire and Blink 182 will be the headliners for this year's Leeds and Reading Festivals.

And cult favourites The Libertines also confirmed they would play the twin-show event after finally burying their differences.

The show by G N'R will be the first ever appearance at Reading, although the group - fronted by Axl Rose - did play Leeds in 2002.

The shows, lined up for the August Bank Holiday weekend, will be the band's only UK festival appearances of the year.

Although Rose has continued to perform with a varying line-up, he had not released an album for more than a decade until last year's long-heralded return Chinese Democracy.

It is the Libertines reunion which will probably be more keenly anticipated by many festival-goers, as frontmen Pete Doherty and Carl Barat agreed to perform together once more.

The quartet fell apart in 2004 when Barat fell out with his joint frontman because of Doherty's wayward behaviour as he battled with drug problems.

The Libertines continue to have a fascination for fans and their 2002 debut album, Up The Bracket, was named the best British album of the past decade in a survey of musicians and music industry bigwigs by music magazine NME.

Arcade Fire have not played the UK since 2007 when they toured acclaimed second album Neon Bible. Their shows at Leeds and Reading will be their only festival slots over here.

Punk trio Blink 182, whose hits include All The Small Things, reformed last year and these will be the first UK dates since then.

It may be part of the contract that GNR's only UK dates are the festival appearences - it makes the tickets that more in demand and also from looking at the headliners, GNR are by far the biggest draw.  Maybe a summer on the festival circuits and then to the USA

One report says these dates are the only festival appearances for gnr, whereas another says the dates are tho only UK dates for gnr.

I was all signed in and when I did the final click to pay, it didn't go through. :rant: But then I went on Viagogo and found 1! It cost a little more, but they are going to send it to me in the US. What I find mind blowing is Weezer opening for Paramore and Blink.  Too bad Weezer isn't playing the same day as GNR since I know both bands are fond of each other.

Then again, having Queens of the Stone Age and GNR back to back is pretty sweet.  Lucky Brits!

Actually it says 'Only Festival appearences in the uk' not general shows.  Nothing stopping them doing their own thing - just depends whether this is a few dates or part of a big Euro tour.  Time will tell.

They could always add more shows like they did docklands in 2002.  They could sell out o2 arena in a day.

probably not, i think it was spirit that posted about these were the only 2 gigs in the UK, which means it most likely in the contract for playing this show that they can't play anywhere else

Some news reports says "UK festival apperance" and some says "UK apperance".

By contract, I believe they're not able to be on any other UK festival bill, but I don't think anyone can prevent them from scheduling their own headlining concerts.

Seems different sources are saying different things. I guess we will soon know anyhow.

Yeah, I guess that's true. I think I read somewhere though, that the general rule for bands playing a festival in the UK, was that the festival would get exclusive rights in the UK to the bands playing on their bill. Meaning a band can only play one UK festival every year.

I don't think this general rule does apply to the bands playing their own concerts.

Got my Leeds ticket confirmation, I'm very excited. Every other band thats there that weekend, I'm not bothered about. But I have to see GN'R at Leeds, I'm sure GN'R will be amazing just like 02.

I got my confirmation for my tickets, which you should have by now as well (haven't read the whole topic, in case you already mentioned). It took more than four hours, but after you filled in your details etc they instantly notified you that it would take a while due to site traffic.

I ordered tickets for Leeds & Reading. Guns, finally  ;D

Without knowing anything about the planned dates and/or contracts between the festivals and GN'R...

In 2006, Download was first announced and for a while it was the only UK date. Then they added the whole batch of dates...

And there was the Hammersmith show which was a warm-up for Download...


But we'll see....

Yeah and in 2002 when they played Leeds, they still did their own headline show at London Docklands. So it's possible that it will be the same this year.

And we got a HOT SUMMER in 2002 and 2006 you can see where i`m going with this ! we need G`N`R in the UK for our sun tans and happiness  :D also maybe there looking  if there`s a positive vibe about them coming and will add accordingly 2010 could be sizzling

Yeah, could be that the Reading/Leeds promoter just took a look at GN'R's current tour plan, and saw no other UK dates announced. And then, just assuming their tour plans for this year was complete, he thought the festival would be their only apperance in the UK.

Just guessing of course, but if GN'R were to do an extensive European tour this summer, it would be rather strange if the UK didn't have like 6-7 dates at least.

according to the weather office the summer is supposed to be around 100f+ by all accounts.............so it should be one very happy summer  :beer:

Gotta agree with you there, especially the R/L festival.  You've only got to read the comments on festival forums for evidence of that.


It's more likely that the promoters want people to think that it'll be their only UK appearance, thus ensuring higher ticket sales.  As Jarmo pointed out, that's what has happened in the past.  I can't imagine that they'll come over here just for two shows and think you'll find their own dates will be announced later on when it's not going to affect ticket sales for the festival.

Just got 2 Reading tickets for the Friday, looks like will have to sleep in the car though. Not doing what we did in 2002 and slept in one of the campsites with no tents or covers, was freezing!

I wouldnt worry about all the idiots posting stuff on the festival forums, it was like that for Donington 2006 and i thought the atmosphere was good when they played.

lol good idea. I did that at Rock am Ring in 2006. I had a tent, but I  couldn't be bothered to drag it to the camp site. Kept engine running for a while, so all was nice 'n warm and I slept tight. Everybody should sleep in their car, camp sites are a nightmare. I keep stumbling over those lines too.

I agree, for a festival the response to GN'R on their forums have been pleasantly positive. I just can't wait for all the casual festival goers to be blown away by GN'R, they will realise what a proper band is after they see GN'R rock the place.  :yes:

Might be a case of chinese whispers, I still would say we'll hear an announcement of more dates. A friend just phoned me after hearing a dj on the radio mentioning rumour of an irish gig but no date or venue confirmation as of yet

Looking forward to Leeds ;D The festival has changed a lot since 2002, a lot of the crowd are trendy idiots who are more interested in being at 'Leeds festival' to try and be cool. However I was watching the videos from 02 and the show looked awesome. Was at donnington in 06 and there were quite a few idiots then, Im sure guns will be the highlight of the weekend though and change a lot of peoples opinions of this great lineup : ok:

I too am worried about people throwing stuff, I hope it doesn't happen. But I will say this, if I see anybody throwing anything onstage during GN'R's set I will do my upmost to stop them. 2002 wasnt too bad for bottle throwing when guns were on stage(friday)  donny 06' was a lot worse(sunday)

i think it depends what night the band plays because the last day of the festival is prob the worse for bottle throwing etc

Disappointed at Donington?  GnR fucking owned donington (eventually) - yeah it got off to rocky start but they soon took control and played an excellent performance

Leeds last time was fine. It's all students, and Leeds has the best mix of students ever. A few will rebel, but most will be cool.

I know Leeds v. well given I lived and studied there, and I will also be there for the festival as I am every year.

I'd like to see Guns do a modest gig at the Edinburgh festival one year too. I know they are a fan of the city, and they would receive an excellent reception there.

I'm really looking forward to Reading! I'm up for meeting some GN'R fans so nobody ruins it for us! My first time seeing guns and I'm really looking forward to this!

I know, Guns have never played Edinburgh, and the first time they played Scotland at all was in 2006. It was a pretty wild reception all the same lol, they must have been impressed.
When Chinese Democracy came out Chris  Pitman,  strangely enough,  gave an interview to Leith FM,  thats the only Edinburgh connection I know of.

Hopefully we will get some pro shot footage from reading. All the highlights are on tv so we should get maybe 5 or so songs. They only show the reading highlights and thats why they never showed leeds 2002.

its pre-recorded on channel4 (UK), i dont think it will be HD but you never know. the highlights from donington is only a short show and they only showed a couple of GnR songs, but the reading highlights are aired over 3 days if i remember right so there will be lots of footage hopefully  :smoking:

They show the whole gig of all 3 headliners I rem last year watching radiohead thinking it was the biggest pile of wank ever!! In fact all three headliners were poor last year!

They wont show the whole gig, I went last year to Reading and when I came back I watched the Highlights on demand and you could have up to a choice of 6 songs pro shot! Can't wait I still believe Reading is the bigggest festival in the UK and without a doubt the most popular and it will be awesome to see Axl and co shine!

You can get to those gigs for free if you apply to work at the gigs doing wristbanding, I did it last year at Electric Picnic, you work a couple of hours in the morning putting wristbands on people coming in. Then you get to enjoy the rest of the festival for free. Email wristband@festivalrepublic.com to enquire about working at whichever gig Reading or Leeds and they'll put you down on the list. Warning issued after conman is prosecuted over fake ticket sales for sold-out event
 
POLICE have urged Reading Festival fans to watch out for fake ticket scams.
The warning follows the successful prosecution of a Berkshire man for 27 counts of fraud relating to the fake tickets for the event.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Sally Russell said: ?The case should act as a warning to other people tempted to buy tickets for events like the Reading Festival from unofficial sources on the internet.

?It?s really important people follow some simple steps to reduce their chances of becoming a victim of this type of fraud.?
Thames Valley Police has now issued the following advice:

* buy tickets from a reputable seller
* when buying or selling by other adverts, meet in person so that you can see the tickets and exchange money. For personal safety always take someone with you
* if buying online ensure you use secure methods of transaction, such a Paypal
* never send or wire money to sellers, including methods such as sending a cheque, transferring money via online banking directly into the seller?s account or using services such as Money Gram
* be aware that some tickets may have terms printed on them that limit the ability of the original buyer to sell them to someone else.
* never provide your personal or banking information (e.g credit card number) to others over the internet.

Headliners for the event include Guns N? Roses, Arcade Fire and Blink 182 (pictured).
Weekend tickets for Reading Festival, which takes place from August 27 through to August 29, are already sold out.

Tickets for the new Norway gig, just the band on their own, are costing ?82 British Pounds....seems a bit high doesn't it, at least with Leeds you get all the other bands?

you`re lucky if anyone plays for less than ?70 a ticket these days look at how much Bon Jovi and Aerosmth are charging and they expect everyone to go and see them at the 02 arena rather than tour around the country i think G N`R are pretty reasonable.

Beer is twice the price in Norway than the UK. Obviously local towns will be cheaper. I went to Pizza Hut there, 1.5 times UK prices as well. Sweden and Denmark were also more expensive. Some strange high seats in bars in Sweden as well. Iceland prices are on another planet.

Obviously arena shows are more appealing but festivals are not as bad as people make out. There's something special about going to a festival where you're band are headlining, and you just know that they are going to blow every other band out of town.

It's like you're on a battle field with you're GN'R T shirt supporting you're band, and you are just waiting for you're army (Guns N' Roses) to come and save the day and kick every other bands ass.

thats how I look at festivals where GN'R are playing, they always kill every other band on the bill, just like Download 2006.

Some of the group I'm going to Reading with have dropped out, and I now have 3 Friday day tickets to Reading to sell if anyone is interested. face value. Question about Reading......Im going for just Firday to see GNR im guessing the set will end after midnight, anyone knows if there is transport back to train station or if trains will run after midnight?

The train station is like a 20 minute walk from the festival, so I won't worry about getting to the station afterwards. I'm not sure what time trains stop and start, but I'm sure trains start operating again like around early morning-ish like 5,6,7 am. So it's not a long wait regardless, just chill out in the train station, and maybe get some rest.  :)

(The Leeds festival does have coaches going back to Leeds Train and Coach stations. This is because it's a good 30 min drive, from the festival and to the station. But I don't think Reading has this service simply because of how close the train station is to the festival area.)

thankfully Ozzy is on the ball and keeps tickets down purposely for the Ozzfest, looking forward to that in the UK

Hour and a half for a Festival it's preatty good most band's play around 50min by my experience.

Is that official? I always thought at Reading 2 headliners got 90 minutes and the other got 2 hours, and I would have suspected that GNR would have the longest set as they are the oldest band. Perhaps timings have changed but I am almost certain both Radiohead and Metallica got 2 hours.

Leeds City Council are strict. Reading are not too bad.

I am sure Guns will play 2 hours minimum set.

Bands usually play approx 2 hours when headlining, really depends on who headliners are, past ones have been shorter if they have less material but still deemed popular enough to headline (eg Razorlight... no I dont know why they headlined either!), but Metallica, Maiden, Pearl Jam etc all played for around 2 hours in the past.  Fear not!  I cannot see Blink being given a longer set slot than Guns, or Arcade Fire for that matter.

readings festivals site is in the middle of the town, they will be strict, but i think the curfew is 11:30 not 11

Reading Council are actually ok (historically anyway). The Noise Act 1996 gives 11pm as a statutory cut off point for loud noise, but permission can be sort quite easily for extensions to this time.

would explain why most bands seemed to finish  around 11:30 then  :hihi:

Well I have heard that the latest they should arrive is 2 weeks before the festival.

I feel they should have been posted out just like any other concert ticket. I understand about re-sellers, but I think this inconveniences the fans just as much.

Download posted the tickets in 2006, just like any other show, about a week after I ordered it. I'm not sure if that has changed as well but I don't see the harm in sending them out straight away.

"Extra stewards and security staff will now be on duty at the Leeds Festival, which is being held over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

There will also be a ban on bringing alcohol onto the site after 6pm on the final evening of the three-day event.

The Leeds Festival suffered repeated problems with last-night violence and rioting before moving from Temple Newsam to Bramham Park in 2003.
A total of 37 people were arrested at 2009's event, the majority of them in connection with drugs offences.

Acts appearing at the festival this summer include Arcade Fire, Blink 182 and Guns N' Roses.

* A 19-year-old woman was allegedly raped at Latitude by at least one man after losing her way when looking for a toilet late on Thursday.

The second reported attack took place on a 17-year-old girl in a tent at the festival site on Friday night or Saturday morning. Police say they are not linking the incidents".

My Reading ticket has arrived but my Leeds one is yet to come. Does anybody know whether it's normal for the 2 tickets to come seperately, I did order the Leeds one about 2 weeks after my Reading one, so it should be OK I hope.

Does anyone have any tips for getting back to Heathrow/London after the Reading show? im planning to get the train there but I believe the trains finish at 23:55 and there are no trains until 4am. I dont want to rush for the last train and potentially miss the end of the show.
I only have the day ticket and want to avoid waiting around till 4am in reading city centre.
Is there a bus that you can prebook or something like that?

To be honest, if you have a slow walk back to the train station after GN'Rs finished, due to the crowds and such it will be getting on anyway. My advice is to hang around the festival area for abit, have a nice slow walk back to the station. Then just chill out in the train station, and get some rest. Then catch the first coach or train out, even if it's at 5am, that is probably what me and alot of others are going to do.

Time flies by at events like this so, I would say just go with the flow and don't worry about getting home really early.

(also my Leeds ticket came today, so I have both now.)  :)

I phoned a local cab company in reading and he said to just book a cab in the day and it should be OK. I think that after being there since 11:am I would be dead come 4am the next day.

On another note, any guesses where GNR will be staying? Hotel near reading? or near london?

I hope for the band's sake they are not staying in a hotel in Reading  ;D

There are trains from Reading to Paddington that run after midnight.  One leaves at 0039 and another one at 0110 on Sat 28 if either of them are any good for you.

I love going to pre-show meet ups, I got to meet jarmo in Toronto.  ;D

Even if a meeting did happen at these festivals, in my view it would have to be a bit earlier than 5pm. The best time is probably around late afternoon, like 2pm - 4pm, as people still have plenty of time to mingle before trying to get a good spot. But the problem at 5pm, is that people are starting to make their 'plan' so to say, to get close to the stage. People would not stay as long as they would have, if it was a little earlier.

Just my view though.

On the lead singer of Guns N' Roses, Axl Rose's, twitter a message was been posted saying all tour dates have been cancelled. However eFestivals has had confirmation from festival organisers that it appears someone hacked into Axl Rose's twitter account, and all Guns N' Roses dates are still on. This includes their appearance at this year's Reading & Leeds Festivals.

The lead singer's twitter account, (here), published the following message at around 11pm (BST) last night:

    "All upcoming Guns N' Roses dates are officially cancelled. Please contact your place of purchase for any refunds."

However eFestivals has had official word from the festival organisers saying "it seems someone hacked into Axl Rose's twitter account, all Guns N' Roses dates are still on."

Fans had suspected as much saying that his account was hacked when the twitter came to light. Their reasoning was two fold. Firstly the spelling of 'cancelled' there's only one 'l' in the US spelling, and secondly the tweet was posted from 'mobile web' instead of Axl's usual 'Twitter for iPhone'.

hope we get official word soon i do follow Axl on twitter through my phone and you get a message to alert you, that message didn`t come to my phone so it kind of makes me suspicious it seems the only explanation there`s no reason to cancel :-\

This has been confirmed by the band's facebook page and the Reading/Leeds organisers as fake - it seems the twitter account has been hacked.  Do not panic!

According to NME.com, GUNS N' ROSES have not cancelled any of their previously announced dates despite a Twitter message from frontman Axl Rose which suggested otherwise.

A spokesperson for the Reading and Leeds festivals has told NME.com that it had received confirmation from the band that Rose's account had been hacked and that next week's slots at the Reading and Leeds festivals are set to go ahead as planned.

Reading And Leeds Festivals boss Melvin Benn has told NME he is "absolutely confident" that Guns N' Roses will play the events, following Axl Rose's Twitter account suggesting otherwise earlier this week (August 16).

Following a festival spokesperson's confirmation that the band would play this year's festivals following the Tweet, Benn reiterated that Rose's Twitter page was hacked.

"I'm absolutely confident about them showing up," said Benn, before describing what action he took following the publication of the Tweet.

"There were probably four or five emails back and forth between 1am (BST) and 3am Monday morning," he said. "[Guns N' Roses] agent was absolutely clear that it was false ? it wasn't true. I think he was in the UK, but I think he'd spoken to Axl and he came back and said it was a false alarm."

Benn added: "Axl confirmed to the agent and the agent confirmed to us. When you look at the Twitter transactions, Axl's Twittering is pretty infrequent and has generally been from a mobile phone. This wasn't in Axl's style."

The festival organiser said his first reaction to the Tweet was one of "disbelief", before adding that he does not know why it is still visible on the site as of today (August 18).

"I didn't know it was still on," he said. "I don't know why it hasn't been deleted. It certainly is completely untrue."

The Reading And Leeds Festivals take place on August 27-29. Arcade Fire and Blink-182 are the other headliners.

The last time they played Leeds was trule an excellent night. Anyone else that was there then going to be there again? Talked to a lot of people that night, perhaps a few of you will be down the front again?!

For anyone who is attending the Reading festival and are not sure about locations and how to get there. All you need to know is that as long as you get to Reading train station, you are fine as you can walk from there, it takes about 10 - 15 mins.

No need to worry about transport from the station to the festival as there is really no need, although there may be buses. I know people often scan these boards looking for info who are not registered, so I hope this helps someone out who is not sure.  ;)

And also for Leeds, the coach station (dyer street) is about a 10 min walk from the train station. Then from the coach station, the festival are putting on shuttle buses really frequent (like every 15 mins or so), and there is a charge, you can find it on the website. So again, as long as you can get to Leeds train station and then walk to the coach station you will be fine (or go directly to the coach station). You can also find the shuttle bus timetable on the Leeds festival site.

(and chances are you will need to get the shuttle bus, as the festival grounds are quite a distance away from the stations)

For those asking about timing - I seriously wouldn't book stuff. It's highly likely they might not be even on stage by 10:30. Let's face it - they're notorious for taking to the stage late! In fact, I don't think I've seen them arrive on time.

At Download 2006, they hit the stage 10 minutes early   :smoking: !!! Agree with the Leeds comment also.

I never understand people like this, book a room if need be, wait in the train station until the first train out the next day. But how someone can walk out of a GN'R show, just to make sure they get home early is just rediculous in my opinion.  :P

If you are taking kids I would advise booking a hotel within a taxi ride away, but don't leave early.

I would not expect them on before 10 at the absolute earliest - if they rocked on closer to 11 it wouldn't surprise me. Axl works to his own timetable - we should all be cool with that by now (or at least grudgingly accept it!). I was at Leeds 2002 and it seemed like an epic wait..........but it was so worth it. An amazing show for my first ever GNR gig.

What no one seems to have mentioned on here so far is escaping a festival site at the end of a night of a festival. I did Download 06 as well and both times it takes a long time to get away especially if you are in the middle of the crowd - even if you are not there is always a crush at the end of a set. If you are leaving early (Why???) then ok you can make a quicker get away - but it is still a trek out to the exits and then out to your transport etc.

I'll be sleeping in Leeds coach station for a bus home at 4:45 am. I'd much much rather do that than ever leave a gig early. Way I see it - I won't remember the few hours spent in a bus station for very long, but I'll remember the gig for a very long time. No contest. As for getting out of the site - who knows!?! Best not to worry about it! There's sure to be some way of getting back into the city centre sooner or later! Most important thing is that it's guns n roses, and we all know they're going to blow us away again! The crowd will probably be full of dim teens shouting 'play sweet child' or 'where's Slash?" but fuck it. When the intro to nighttrain kicks in, there won't be a feeling like it in the world! Never is!

Just hang out at the train station, alot of people probably are going to be waiting for the first train. I wouldn't worry about getting out, loads of people will be walking that way, just follow the crowd. If it helps, print off a map of reading train station and you will see the road that leads to the festival site, it really is not that far.

Don't worry about the typical idiots in the crowd, I've came across alot of them. You are there to see GN'R along with the army of GN'R fans, you are not alone.  :)

Although there is still time for them to come, I would advise you to keep sending them emails. Or you can have a go at calling them, and see whats up with your order.

I have not been to the Leeds festival since they moved. Ordinarily, it takes 30 minutes at least to leave the festival grounds given the size required for everything including the camping.

If you are wanting to see GN'R, catch an early train the next morning, otherwise you will miss everything.

anyone going to reading on a day ticket and without a hotel there is a 24/7 cafe just down the road from the main entrance which i stayed in for about 7 hours after rage played reading a couple of years ago, they don't seem to mind people staying there all night as long as you buy something

If memory serves you can walk and there is a bridge (I think they have even put additional temporary ones up in the past) but it is quite a walk. Alternatively you can use the boat but there will probably be queus. Are you going for the whole weekend?

I think the BBC will be showing the full showing of all the headliners, and a lot of other bands as well. 

Knowing the BBC coverage of things like this there is never any rhyme or reason as to what they show! They could show lots of GNR, they could show barely anything. There never seems to be much logic to it. Fingers crossed I guess!

on bbc 3 tv listings it has 90mins for the GNR show at reading on Fri night.  Saturday, Sunday evenings has the others. Obviously it wont be the full show and its recorded on a delay. It will be interesting to see how much of the show we actually get!

For those who can receive it. There is a special on the Reading festival on BBC3 Will start around 22.25 UK time.  The program info states:
Episode 2 of 7:Live coverage of the first day of the Reading Festival. All being well, Axl Rose will have allowed the best possible view to experience the live rock and roll extravaganza that is Guns n' Roses as they headline the main stage.

how do you reach that conclussion, if the band was broadcasted live every fucking time they played a festival were a broadcast was expected/announced? (Rock In Rio III, Rock In Rio-Lisbon 2006, Inland Invasion, Rock Am Ring, and even ISE was broadcasted when the band played at Roskilde)

Duffrock, I feel exactly the same way. Whan I see them in October, I'll be screaming and singing along until the bitter end, even if it finishes at 4 in the morning and I have to walk all the way accross London to get home.

It's in the middle of a town, the curfew is their out of respect for the local people who are there all year round.

I doubt some of the older folk in the area want to hear blaring music past midnight.

I honestly find it amazing that people bitch about curfews for outdoor shows in populated area. considering the band were there a good 2 hours before they were due to start there is no reason for being an hour late on stage.

Yeah, Download 2006 the sunday night there was a lot of shit. Guns finished, we all went to bed (well I was up being naughty outside of our tent) and a few hours later there are Police Carriers going through the camp sites. :o

True, but you had to see something like this coming.  The organizer practically dared Axl.  So Axl in turn dared the organizer, and both of them stuck to their guns (pardon the pun).

It looks like everyone handled themselves as well as you could have hoped though, and we should be thankful for that.

The band were on site at least 2 hours prior to the scheduled stage time

I'm sorry but if there were issues why not say straight away, avoid the bullshit that happened at/after the last show.

what I know about the festival is that every year I have been no band has been more than 10 minutes late, none of the other bands on today were late. And i've seen some insane stage set ups there.

The Kings Of Leon headlined last year's Friday night at the Reading Festival... A band member said this about the gig "Reading? What the fuck? Zero love for the kings. I know it was cold but holy shit, y'all were frozen. I can only hope Leeds is in better form."
