Title: The solo's we have heard so far
Post by: jacdaniel on March 24, 2010, 10:26:21 AM
Just heard a minority of people complaining that the solo's are not that great on the songs we have heard so far...

ive only listened to each song once or twice but the solo's sounded awesome to me.  Love the solo on By the Sword.  The one on Starlight seemed awesome too and obviously Watch This is basically just a solo over heavy Drop D riffs.  Even the solo's on Ghost and I hold on also sounded cool to me.  And Beautiful Dangerous had brilliant solo's too.  Easily better than VR solo's in my opinion.

but like i said, ive only listened to each once or twice so they're not stuck with me yet.

opinions?

I think the solos are pretty good but they aren't great. I'm still waiting for a real memorable solo such as the one in "Slither."

I like it when Slash plays off the melody in the song or the solo has a melody of it's own, rather than playing one hundred notes per minute that doesn't go anywhere.

The solo in Ghost is perfect, it has the right amount of feel and technical showing off, same with Beautiful Dangerous.
Starlight for the most part is too much noodling for me, I Hold On isn't too bad, and By The Sword has a great solo with a lot of feel as well.
The Crucify The Dead solo is by far the worst, it just doesn't go anywhere.

Oh yeah, and Watch This is killer as well. Parts of it remind me of the extended solo breakdown part that Slither originally had.

Honestly, the solos are the best part of the songs for me. Defintiely thinking they are great.

They are pretty good, but anyone that blow me away so far. Songs in general are awesome.

We surely haven't heard another NR or Street Child caliber solo, but on the flip side I think for the most part they have been strong because they fit in well with the song.

He seemed to go the route of fitting himself into the context of the song, rather than recording an album of masturbatory solos (not a bad thing) that happen to have vocals around them.

I would say that outside of the Slither solo, these are far stronger as a whole thus far than what he did in VR.

What I don't think is getting any notice though is how awesome his riffs have been almost across the board. They have for the most part all sounded pretty fresh and are catchy as as hell, and that is a lost art to say the least.

Complaining about solo's where did we go...

He played what he wanted and we complaining about that isn't our place

Why should He prove once more he can put on some PERFECT solo on some song while he can also just play what he feels is right.
we know Slash for how long now... 20 years and you still complain about the solo's come one.

In gnr he proved he can provide some amazing solo's and also in VR let the man play what he want's to play and just buy the record and show some respect.

Yea I aint complaining, just giving my opinion. I'm just saying that I have indeed known slash for 20 years and i know he capable of real memorable solos such as scom and slither. The songs are great and the guitar work throughout is very good. The solos could be better is all.

he hasn't really gone for it like he did on the Illusion albums, but on AFD, he did a bunch of shorter solo's (except SCOM) and alot of killer outtro's which this album is lacking a bit; but the solo's have really fit with the overall feel/structure of the song

I may be one of the minority on a GN'R forum to not really pay much attention to guitar solos. I'd rather he played what fit the songs, than go over the top with his fretboard wanking like he did in Snakepit. He appears to have done that, so I applaud him for letting the songs breathe instead of using his solo album as an excuse to show off. And the times where he does let rip, it's awesome. I honestly believe that if the other songs are as good as most of what we've heard so far, then it will be the best album Slash has been involved with since 1991. (And I'm a huge fan of Contraband).
