It's such a great song. I've listened to the live performance so many times already and I hope the studio version will be just as good. One question though. What's a single these days? Will we be able to buy the "single" or will it just be played on the radio to promote the album that's coming?

By the Sword to me is better than 85% of the VR songs....  So people must not like singer.. Has a great riff, bridge, and solo....  We know its not slash they dislike, so it must be the singer..  I don't think this will be the biggest hit or best song.  I think the song with Fergie could be big due to her popularity, but with Kid Rock, Cornell, Adam Levine, and MShadows on the album as well, there will be many "single" possibilities.

For me it's just too hard to tell what this song will sound like. It's a piss poor video sound wise. Stockdale's voice swallows up the rest of the band in this live clip. I'm sure Slash's guitar will be turned up for the studio version.

The solo sounded promising.

great, Slash is back. very zeppelinesque song. I like it.

We know he recorded the whole album in analogue as opposed to digital, and I wonder if that helps give the song that retro feel at all or not. Someone more familiar with that might be able to offer some insight, but the song does sound like it was recorded 30 years ago in alot of ways.

Sounds pretty good to me.  Hope this is a sign of things to come.

The song is awesome, I love everything about it.  The solo cries passion.

Very good song, very emotional/Slash style solo that only he can produce.  I dont really like Wolfmother but i was really impressed with this song.  I can't wait to hear the rest of the songs that contain some of my favorite artists of all time on them.  if this is any indication, this should be one of the most "rock n roll" records  to come out in a long time.

THAT was actually a Scott Weiland failure.  That was not a "Slash style" guitar record.  And you know it.

Slash was part of the band.  Let's not lay the blame on ONE person. 

And for the record, I actually liked Libertad.  Although it was a huge step downward from Contraband to me. 

But I agree with your previous comment.  I'm not a big Wolfmother fan either, but dig this track.  Can't wait to hear the Kid Rock track and others.

being excessively optimistic, i find the song average. its not bad, but its kinda ''meh'' to me. Boring as hell in some moments, but gets better as soon as slash starts soloing.

I agree. The solo salvaged the track, but, for the most part, this song went no where. Bad vocalist. It's Five O'Clock Somewhere bad. From what I could make out, the lyrics were average.


Without a good lead singer, Slash's talent is just wasted. I really dug the solo though. Almost wish it was part of another song.

pretty good song. i don't love it, but i think as i hear it more (on better speakers) i will really start to like it.

Negatives - i was kinda hoping for it to really kick ass at some point, but it doesn't really get there. also, i like stockdale as a vocalist, but it's a little too much in this song. his vocal is just ok, and it really dominates the song.

Positives - but it has a cool grinding beat and some decent riffs.

Cool song, as I expected. The lyrics sound average, but the basic riff and solo are very good. I really like Stockdale's vocals.


Probably the acoustic droopy nature of the start of the solo.

I have wondered the same thing. Slash has no record label, and according to himself paid for the album out of his pocket. We know he has distribution deals set up with record companies, but I wonder where that equation leaves promo, as typically a record company would pick up the tab on that. We know Slash will get out there and hustle with the promo on his end, but nothing beats having the muscle of a record company behind you. It is one of the things I am most interested to see how it develops given his situation.

Perhaps a couple of videos will be done by the time the album releases. This song really is a :headbanger:. I wish the mix of the solo was a little louder. The drumming is quite awesome.

yeah, that's it. not that it sounds the same, but it has a similar feel. also, the song is at a very high intensity level and then basically stops for a second as the solo kicks in.

This song has everything to become in a big Hit. Despite of it has a "classic" sound - not in fashion these days -, the tune in general is very catchy and it's sounds fresh at the same time. If Slash would had got Robert Plant for this song, it'd be a "classic" already . This singer had an amazing work though.

The drumming is awesome. I love Slash's rythym playing on this song.  I LOOOOVE his wah tone as well, pretty well thought out tune, not cookie cutter.  I am noticing more and more little things the more I listen to it.

I learned a long time ago it takes 10-15 listens to properly  judge anything

Anything guitar related makes a HUGE difference with analog. I actually was talking to Slash about that ( he follows me on twitter hahahah ) because my band has been looking for a studio to record in full analog but to no avail and he said that they don't manufacture the 2' tapes that are used to record on!!

EDIT: His tone is almost identical to Messages from VR , makes me wonder if they recorded that in analog? That was one of their most stellar songs! Especially from Libertad era.

I wouldn't mind hearing the Slash parts over and over, but then there is that awful caterwalling obfuscating the good guitar work.

But I disagree with your repetition theory; I think first impression is extremely important and that someone can actually program themselves to like music through the comfort of its familiarity.

discussion for another thread im sure, but some of my favorite albums/songs of all time were ones i hated first couple listens.

Ive often found, stuff I like on the first listen, usually doesn't stay long in my CD player till I am tired of it, whereas ones that take a few, stick in there for a very long time.

Back in the day, I listened to that Coverdale/Page album twenty or thirty times and convinced myself it was a good effort worthy of Jimmy's axe. Five years later, I picked it up and *wham*, the reaction I had the first time I heard the material came back around and smacked me in the back of the head.  Pure wretchedness.

I agree that you can pick up stuff here and there to embolden a track (Chinese is a great example) , but very rarely has repetition changed my mind for an entire album.

As for this song, I doubt repetition will train my ears to ignore the terrible vocalist.

If you listen to the songs enough, you will like almost anything.  I agree a first impression is key.  But upon more listens, I notice more cool things... It may not change how I feel about the song as a whole, but it makes me appreaciate more aspects of the song. Some songs are so epic and huge (Coma and Estranged) that you need to actually study those to wrap your ahead around all that is going on.

pretty awesome song. probably about the level i expected, an 8.5/10.... i like it as much as anything on contraband...

its slighhtly boring, and i actually don't llike the drumming.. is that travis? and i dont like the initial wah sound of the guitar... also i think the riff and vocals get a littttle bit in the way of each other at the beginning.

but the melodies are sweet, and the guitars sound amazing.. and i really like the song.. so im daim happy hope the rest is this good

I like this song - but I don't think it will be a hit - not in the U.S. at least.

I think people on these forums really overestimate the popularity of GN'R, Slash, and related artists, groups.

Well said.  We do seem to raise expectations for GNR, Slash, etc. here in the US.  The music industry is so ridiculous in the US.  Just look at the top songs, albums.  You can clearly see there isn't much room for GNR, Slash, etc.  He has a chance with the Fergie track, maybe Kid Rock, but I'd be surprised if this song was a hit.  And I like the song, I just have no faith in the "casual" music fan in the US being able to notice a good song.  Of course, it could do well on the modern rock chart, or whatever chart that is.

When I said this song will become a "big hit" , I am not talking about it's gonna sell millions of copies or hit number one in charts, but I'm sure will be quite requested on radio broadcasts, that's it.

It's a good song, but I wouldn't have guessed it to be a single. Personally, I would've picked a different sounding song for a first single. Had he gotten Cornell to do a few late night talk shows with him and a video for their song I think people would've been all over it, just because of the collaboration between the two.

A lot of guitarists file away riffs so that they can use them in the right song. He even had the Fall To Pieces riff (although it shows up in a lot of GN'R songs) since the early nineties.

I like it....sounds very Zeppelin'ish.  Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

I hope the record sells a boat load.  Analog baby!  First Chinese was mastered correctly, and now Slash recorded his solo album in all analog.  Fidelity is not completely dead yet.

im not quite sure how they're going to calculate the album sales for this album, i think there is different release dates in several parts of the world.  Not to mention the fan pack with classic rock.

Does anyone know whether there has been additional confirmation that the album will be released on vinyl aside from Slash's tweet?

 Reason I ask is Bestbuy has the CD for pre-order but I have been unable to find any listings for the vinyl.  I understand EMI is handling the US distribution and they did not mention the specific formats that are going to be released.

I've given it a few listens and it's just not doin' it for me - I don't see it as a "grower" either.

I really like the song, riff sounds badass, solo is sick. I also like Stockdale's voice, something unique to distinguish from all the similar sounding Nickelback vocalists on rock radio right now.

If Stockdale sang every song then yeah, i could see someone formulating this opinion.

thats what makes this album so interesting.  Slash did a great job of picking RELEVANT singers in today's music industry like Stockdale, Shadows, Fergie etc.  If it were just an album with old time legends like Iggy Pop, Ozzy Osbourne, Chris Cornell, Lemmy etc I wouldnt be as interested in it.  This is a very ambitious record.

I find it interesting that AIC is dominating the rock singles chart, but the album as a whole hasn't sold all that much. Makes you wonder how important airplay is if the song is not getting played on the teenie bop/adult contemp stations.  I wonder if the Fergie tune could get some spins on those stations.

If you read some of the comments on Slash's facebook account, under the part were he said it had gone to radio, some people are claiming that its been played already!!!!

I never liked Stockdale's voice. I find it annoying. This song is very forgettable. I will give the album a chance because that is the kind of guy I am, but I hope there are far superior songs on it then this. It just sounds like a big pile of who gives a shit.

Slash's guitar playing sounds good on that song.  That is all I really care about anyways.  I'm not really a Stokdale fan but I can still appreciate his range.   The song is actually stuck in my head now lol

I got a funny related story, sort of.  I was at a strip club one night and asked the DJ to play some GNR.  I asked for "Rocket Queen", which is my favorite song, and has a stripper kind of vibe to it.  So the song comes on and I'm drunk, feeling good.  There's naked women around, life is good.  So I throw down a dollar and this Russian/Brazilian/chick from some foreign land comes over and starts dancing.  She's hot with large assets, might I say.  It's a great time.  So we start conversing a bit and all of a sudden she starts complaining about the music and saying how the song sucked.  Totally killed the moment for me.  I got pissed at her, in a joking kind of way.  Didn't she pass Stripper 101?  The customer is always right, always agree with him.  That's where the tips are.  That chick didn't get another dollar from me all night long.  Not that I'm a big spender at a strip club anyway.  If I was throwing massive amounts of money her way, I'm sure she would've told me GNR is the best band in the world, but not for a dollar.  Money talks.

The first single from SLASH'S impending Self Titled album will be By The Sword, a track featuring Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale on vocals. The track will be made available as a digital single.

after a listen or 2 i don't love it.. its ok.. reminds me of a good 70s rock song.. i don't think it was a very good choice for a lead single.. classic rock fans will like it.. but don't think it will have much cross over appeal.   I did hear it on the radio though.. and actually liked it a bit more after that.. i think it was the surprise of hearing on the radio

NOW Listen 'By The Sword'

Eddie Trunk played "By The Sword" on his Sirius/XM show again tonight for the second straight week.  He had Mike Piazza on the show and he talked about playing the song earlier before Mike got in the studio.  He told him the song sounded great, especially the way it was recorded and he was texting back and forth with Slash telling him how much he liked the song and was looking forward to hearing the rest.  Mike hadn't heard the song yet, but seemed intrigued.

Its a really good song, and I haven't gotten sick of it yet.  That solo is just awesome, it just builds to a great climax.  I also love the acoustic in the front of the song, and how he plays it during the versus.  Andrew did great as well..
