Title: Bands from your country Post by: svdv22 on February 19, 2010, 08:54:55 AM There are lots of different nationalities here right? So I thought a topic to promote bands from your home country / state or even city could be a bit fun.. I'll start of with 3 bands from the Netherlands:
1: Golden earring They're actually pretty known outside the Netherlands (they had Kiss and Aerosmith open up for them once!). Had a few hits such as Radar love, Twilight zone and When the lady smiles (early 70's and 80's). They're one of the longest existing rock bands that still perform in the same line up as when they first started. In 2011 they'll celebrate their 50th anniversary. I've seen them live and they still do some shows in Europe and/or America, sometimes. If you get the chance.. they're still worth to see them live! Radar love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeRa3RtBiIU&feature=related When the lady smiles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYxp6OIEZlk Twilight zone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1sf2CzEq0w&feature=related 2: Vandenberg Another pretty known dutch band. The only dutch band who ever got signed by a major American label. Best know for their hit 'burning heart' but they have many great songs! (Adrian) Vandenberg later went on joining Whitesnake and has been the longest lasting guitar player in that band. Burning heart: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY3L-QR2Jb4 Vandenberg guitar solo + Wait (live in Japan): (Actual song starts at 5:36) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRIIUyc2QNg Vandenberg guitar solo: 3: Plaeto Not known at all outside the Netherlands, which is a shame. They're amazing to witness live. Many solos, extended songs and more solos. They have 2 albums out. One full of great rockers hinting to the 70s. Second is more acoustic and has deeper songs. Not really rockin' (exceptions are made, here and there) but still very good. There's not much on youtube about this band except: Plaeto on arrow rock festival: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0PZJHXEeZA 'Bootleg' of Being me: (studio version is just 3,5 minutes long) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU2bkuz_q8A&feature=related You can listen to most of their songs on their hyves (sort of facebook just for dutch people, scroll down a bit for the player): http://plaeto-2009.hyves.nl/ Songs worth checking out are (amongst others): We've got the world today, you impress yourself, black state of mind, blame it on you anyway (from their first album, all rockers). From their second album: Rufus on Mars & Get on board. Eum bashra hey (first song on the list) is on their second album but gives a wrong image of their music. Title: Re: Bands from your country Post by: BlowUpYourVideo on February 19, 2010, 09:07:21 AM TBH the only Scottish artist I really like is KT Tunstall and she's not 'rock'. Alternative folky pop/rock?? Something like that. Universe & U is a current favourite of mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HycryXujLc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HycryXujLc) (Don't know what's with the video there...)
I like a couple of songs by Nazareth and Primal Scream but that's about it as far as Scotland goes. Now is when it pays to be 'British'. ;D Title: Re: Bands from your country Post by: Krok1 on May 19, 2010, 06:03:47 PM Twilight Arise ;) But I don't think they play with eachother anymore (they're just 18-19 years old), but still; They are amazing, just check them out at:
http://www.myspace.com/twilightarise Kinda like Dream Theater/Iron Maiden.. Metal ;D Title: Re: Bands from your country Post by: Is he struggling? on May 19, 2010, 06:26:16 PM Where I'm from (London) might just have the highest number of famous musicinas per head in the world, so I'm gonna stick to those who hail from my local area (North-west London)
Elton John You all know him - the grand dame of english pop-rock and a hero to our very own Dexter. Apparently he earned his musical wings by dodging flying pint glasses whilst he was performing gigs in some of my local pubs (a bit before my time, but I wonder if helped make him such a tempramental SOB?) Still who'd have thought a pudgy white guy from suburban London could have so much soul/ Ronnie Wood The only Stone (or perhps, the only musician) who can keep up with Keef. Apparently he and his family would keep most of thier neighbours up most nights with their family jam sessions. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Wood a couple of years ago. He was with his lovely (then) wife Jo. I made some small talk with him about the Stones and Arsenal FC, tried not to stare at his wrinkly face for too long (seriously people, we're talking a wet sack of prunes that have been left in the sun for a week here), I let him get back to his giant glass of red wine. It was 12.30 in the afternoon. (I know its bad form to tittle tattle about celebrities you barely know. But he did go down in my estimation after the way he abandoned Jo, who really is a nice woman). Scouting for Girls Indie-Pop Flavour of the month here in the UK. Half of them went to my old school. The less said about them, the better. Title: Re: Bands from your country Post by: BlowUpYourVideo on May 20, 2010, 08:45:55 PM Hmm, I forgot to mention The Jesus And Mary Chain (whose debut album I need to get). They're pretty influential. Other Scottish bands who I haven't listened much to are Skids, Big Country and Biffy Clyro.
Amy Macdonald, who's more of a folk/pop singer is also Scottish, as are GTA's own Love Fist! :P Of course, Bon Scott and Angus and Malcolm Young, as well as Shirley Manson of Garbage were all born in Scotland. Shirley's the only musician I can think of that was born in Edinburgh.... Scotland has more artists than I thought. 8) Title: Re: Bands from your country Post by: mrlee on May 20, 2010, 09:00:53 PM ^Primal Scream from Scotland too!
