Title: Stage Layout
Post by: Axlashba on January 18, 2010, 06:40:27 PM
What are people thoughts on the new stage layout ?

i personally don't like it i think it breaks the crowd up too much, just a normal stage layout with one small platform in the middle would work better i think !

i can't see this stage layout working in europe !! i just seems wierd that people have to look at the back of axl or whomever when their right at the front of one of those "catwalks? type things ??

what do u think , also would like to hear from people that have been to a gig !

I think it's great.

It brings the bandmembers closer to a much larger portion of the audience.

why would the europeans don't like it? the foo fighters, ac dc and u2 among others have toured europe with much bigger "catwalks"

The "I can't see the stage layout working in Europe" statement is just silly. What are you basing this on? Has there been some extensive research on this particular subject matter?

I must have missed the "The impact of concert stage layouts in different cultures" paper.

It's the coolest stage currently on tour.

There's nothing like it.

Sure, U2 has a huge stage too, but they didn't put it indoors!

If you haven't seen it in person, shut up.  :P

yah both me and Spirit are from Europe, but that "breaking up the crowd" idea you seem to have is odd.. how much contact do you have with people 70 meters away from you anyway? It's even cool when the frontmen says to one side of the crowd sing this and then the other side should sing higher and battling each other and shit

but alrite

I love the new stage and I can't wait to see it in action in Toronto!!  :-*

Personally, I feel it's the best stage design, that GNR has ever had.

Including the Illusions setup. In hindsight, the rig/lighting they had back then, is boring compared to now.  8)

My first thought when seeing the new stage was, "they will be closer to the crowd than ever before".

It seems so in your face and why wouldn't you want the greatest band that ever graced the stage, "In your fuckin' face!"

What never stops to amazes me, is how people always fucking complain.

Is it just me or is it normal that people complain about ANYTHING?

I hate Axl's pants.  He has a hole in it that I don't like.  He should wear normal jeans!

My thoughts after the Edmonton show:

Pro's

- Guns N' Roses have a large band, and they move around alot... the extra catwalks keep the band members engaging with the crowd.  People in the stands and on the floor get a good view of the action.
- The three catwalk look is unique to GNR... and it commemorates this leg of the tour.

Con's

- The catwalks break up the crowd and pen the first few rows of people in like sheep... add in the power tripping security and it felt like I was being watched the whole time.

That said, I still like the stage layout overall.   : ok:

Yeah, I've seen some rockshows, but this shit is something else.
If you go, I suggest you look up, because that lighting rig is seemingly very innovative. A cavalcade of pyro on deck. Great sound system(not sure about the back of the arena...). Great LED effects. Guns n' Roses too! :o
Go if possible! Money well spent, even if you don't like GNR and just dig looking at cool shit.

The stage seems awesome and it's a great idea to get the band closer to the audience. I'm gonna love to be locked in like sheep in the first rows!

I hope you love standing still too, because the security (in Edmonton) was out to ruin the enthusiasm on the floor.  It was the only disappointing aspect of what was otherwise a great show.  I don't know where the orders come from, be it Axl, management, or venue, but it totally SUCKED.  I'm not pining for an all out mosh pit at a GNR concert, but a younger crowd should be able to move around like they're at a damn rock show.

Any kind of jumping or yelling was immediately squashed by security.  Absolutely No moshing.  No crowd surfing.  And "NO CAMERAS!" too.  How fun!

One young kid in front of me, left hand side of the stage, was dragged out during Whole Lotta Rosie because he started to push his friend and jump around a little bit... they hunted him down and eventually pulled him out.

I've been to dozens of shows at this venue, with heavier acts and nastier crowds, and this is the worst I've seen security.

For the sake of the tour, I hope they ease up.

For the sake of the fans who've been following this band since it began, I hope they continue to not allow moshing or crowd surfing. The one kid who started pushing his friend probably disrupted those around him.

I don't want anybody pushing into me or moshing around me. I want to see GNR while not being subjected to people who can't express themselves other than to spaz out and beat each other up.

On the other hand, I wouldn't bother going to see any hardcore bands because of the same reason.

I know how much disruption the kid caused, as I was directly behind him... and it was minimal.  Security made a big deal of nothing, perhaps its their job and what they're instructed to do - but it still sucked the life out of the floor.  And as a fan, I'm sure you can appreciate a little thing called "atmosphere" at a rock concert... and well, this particular concert had little of it (from where I was standing).

And anyone that can't handle the environment of a GENERAL ADMISSION floor concert, be they new OR old fans, should just save themselves the trouble and find a nice comfy seat close to stage.

Why a band, management, or venue would open the floor up for general admission and then order a pissy security staff to haul kids out for jumping about is beyond me.

Question for those who got the first row: is the stage so high that you can't see the back of the stage? I ask this because I gor first row on Iron Maiden last year and the stage was so high that I couldn't see Nicko! People who were a few rows back would had seen the stage/band a whole better than me.  :-\

No idea where it the order came from but it was the same in both Regina and stoon.   Even just jumping up and down and waving the hands upset some of the security that was in the crowd.  (I do not mean moshing just jumping up and down) I have zero issue with no crowd surfing as it is dangerous I have had more then a few people land on my head.  Plus then shoes come off and get thrown onto the stage.    However in the end I still prefer GA even when we can just stand there and sway from side to side then seats

I was not front row but for both shows center and about 5-6 rows back and it was perfect.  Could see all 3 sides and for this show if you are going to it more then one time then maybe rail one time and a little further back the next.

Here in Brazil I'm sure we won't have these restricitions. There is NO WAY to refrain a Brazilian crowd from jumping, screaming their lungs out, moshing, and doing all kinds of crazy shit, and security knows that. They just keep an eye on violent acts, dangerous stuff, people with cameras in venues where they aren't allowed, and people trying to trespass the barriers. I've never seen security people here interfering with the way people were enjoying themselves at a rock concert!

And being unable to move in the first row is just the rule from where I come from, not because of security, but because everyone will be pushing against the barrier all the time. I do hope the stage isn't that high because I'll do my best to get front row, it's the only way to make the money I'm putting into the tickets worth it. Getting there and not being able to see a thing would suck.

I havent seen it in person so i can only judge by what i saw in the pics.

I love the stage and its the best one yet in a GNR tour, the only major disappointing thing about it, is that it doesn't have a ramp in the middle that goes all the way through the crowd like AC/DC's one.

I prefer those kind of stages, as you get much more chances to interact with the band and see them closer.

Other than that it seems like a great stage and in person you probably feel like that giant stage is falling down on top of you which is great. Ill have that experience when they come to europe for sure  :hihi:

I love the lightning too!

There are lights in the stairs like on broadway ;) and in the middle of the stage hanging above it, there are these 2 circles full of lights. One bigger than the other and they can both twist, break up in halves, turn, tilt and on. There's also led lights on the frame of the whole thing. Looks really bad ass! I'll post some pics of it later..

Isn't 4 in the morning rather early?  ???

BTW It's half past 6, early evening here.

Hum.. a visual trick or something I was under the impression that the edges of the runways were square. Perhaps because I saw it only from arenas and the venues were different.

I'd imagine that the stage can be configured to fit various venues of varying sizes, by adding or taking away sections. A bit like Lego if you like, you wouldn't necessary have the same stage for a venue that holds 8-10,000 compared to a stadium that holds 40,000, even if the basic shape is maintained, a truck full of extra parts wouldn't be out of the question. The tour organiser would need to know basic info, such as stage size  to plan their assembly stratergy before they reach the venue and avoid the surprises, I'd be shocked if they just turned up and worked on the fly.

S?o Paulo stage had the 3 sideways (catwalks) and, in addiction, sideways just under the screenshots! So it was s really big stage

You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkT-plcYa34

It's not the same.

The runways doesn't have the round endings, and the drum riser is the same as 2006 I think. No stairs going all the way around behind the drumset. Two smaller staircases on each side, and Dizzy, Frank and Chris have their gear on the same space.

The lcd screens and led lights hanging from the ceiling are the same.

Someone who I talked to at the show in Bergen had met Dj earlier in the day, and he said they were having some difficulties with the stage whilst in South America. We know there were some trouble in Costa Rica (?), but if this relates directly to the change of stage I don't know.

Title: Re: Stage Layout
Post by: jordinho on June 08, 2010, 02:53:20 PM
They work with a standard layout and adjust to the size of the arena. The one in Oslo was much wider than in Bergen. Two extra modules on each side I'd guess. Also I don't think they travel with their own stage, but have one provided locally. The modules used in Bergen were different from Oslo and the stage seemed a bit higher (I was front row both places). They would need to travel with two rigs if they brought their own. Not many bands can afford that and there's really no point.

The stage layout throughout the 2006/07 tour was really nice and simple, I thought it worked really well. The layout in Canada was very epic and obviously was in place to expose GN'Rs' amazing stage show the best way possible.

If GN'R continue with the ' Big ' layout or the smaller one like in 2006, don't bother me all that much. Because I know that GN'R always delivers an outstanding show, whatever the circumstances.  :)
