Kind of a little late! But good luck trying to sell them for face value, at the show you'll likely have to drop the price to sell them.

I can't believe all the positive reviews so far, based on how the media has treated GnR and particulary Axl in the past.  They deserve it though, I mean how could you criticize unless you're some idoit on youtube.

I'm going to skip Danko Jones, I checked out a few of his videos and he's too CJAY92 radio rock crap for me, I'm going to head down for 9pm as long as I don't miss Sebastian Bach - hopefully he is still on at 9pm. He blew me away last time in 2006! I would have thought that GNR would be going on later than 10:45 since it's Saturday night. Anybody remember when he would go on in 2006? Wasn't it more like 11:30-12?

I was just told that there was a request by the band to "check phones at the door". I'm not quite sure what that means but I asked for clarification and haven't heard back yet.

I wonder if they're somehow banning phones at the shows?!

I would HIGHLY doubt that.  That would be utter chaos, to get 10,000 people their phones back at the end of the show.  There must be more to the story.

That is totally different than what you said earlier.  You said: "I was just told that there was a request by the band to "check phones at the door"."
So they didn't do that at all....They took his camera...They probably never asked him for his phone... ::)

As in the guy who's at GN'R show right now enjoying himself and simply mentioned that security asked to see his phone said that the band requested that no cameras of any kind be allowed in the venue.

We've been over this before; probably the venue's own policy and blaming it on GN'R (imo) but it is what it is.

Seems about right. Cameras are being confiscated at every show. After all it usually says "no cameras" on the ticket.

That's fair.

It is standard, happened at the last Springstein show I was at--building policy.  They, like with Bono, let us keep the phone, they just didn't want filming.  I always hide things if I want to get it in--don't just hold it in my hand basically challenging them to hold it at the door.

That makes more sense.  I could see them confiscating cameras.  Isn't that a policy at most arenas?  I mean, sure lots of people get by with them, but I do believe it's within their rights.  And I don't think that has anything to do with Axl or the band either.  I didn't mean to insinuate that Bono would lie about such a thing, I know he wouldn't.  I just knew there had to be more to the story than them wanting to take his phone from him.

Yes I did, and personnally, I don't care really.  NO BANDS will make chek security for cell phones.  Everybody has a cell phone.  So taking away 15000 cell phones is a total nonsense, and anybody that tries to make you beleive otherwise for any stupid reason or for his own personal agenda against the band (to start rumours AGAIN) is a non sense too!

Pretty sure the no camera policy is a venue thing, it does not come from GnR camp. The band is not to blame for what security does. But we can ask Fernando tomorrow about that "the band told" thing.

But the show is on!

Looks like people are throwing shit again. Wtf is with throwing shit? Why do some have to go to a show just to piss bands the fuck off?

PRobably cause they want to feel important and think that they are badasses and think rock shows, are supposed to be that way? or maybe they got to the venue late seeing as they think Axl wouldnt go on till a later time and they are pissed? lol Whatever hope security chucked thier asses the fuck out!

I hope so too. Always a few asses that have to try and ruin things for everyone.

Just got back from the show, fucking wicked....Axl sounds perfect he was in such a good mood smiling all night, talking and making jokes. Found it funny right after CD he went into the story about being forgot at the hotel and having to take a slow taxi to be there tonight lol.

Vocals on "Sorry" were great, i think he he starting to feel comfortable on some of the new stuff, same with the rest of the band. Before I.RS he talked a little about how AFD as great as it was, was more testosterone driven and CD has alot more depth etc....and then what Jarmo said.

Some more highlights was Richard giving Ron a hard time about the acoustic guitar on the stand while playing If the World, "Man that looks so fucking gay" was the first thing he said haha. And yes Axl was pulling out the foot slide on the piano, then Ron came over to him and Axl slid his hands all up and down Rons guitar, awsome stuff.

I cant believe how Axl nailed everything that he did, This i love was Fantastic especially i remember thinking. I know someone who recorded some of the show (not sure if he got all of it) so i will check about it when i can and hopefully get some decent stuff to share, we will see. Tomorrow ill try to take some pics!

What a night boys n' girls. Every song played was amazing, but off the top of my head, Axl tore KOHD and If The World a new asshole.

Dude behind me and my Dad was kind enough to give us backstage passes, so we got to meet Del, Bumble' for the second time, and Mr. Dizzy Reed ;D

We saw DJ too but he was lost in conversation and we didn't want to disturb him.

Well, off to get some ZZZzzzzs, and then it's off to Edmonton in 3 hours :D

For anyone that attended last night how was the crowd in calgary?

Title: Re: Calgary, AB - Concert Discussion
Post by: fishtifer on January 17, 2010, 11:31:09 AM
That was my 3rd time seeing GNR, first was in 2002 Tacoma, second 2006 in Calgary. Last night was the best of heard Axl out of the 3 times, and seeing him without the braids and with bandanas was like seeing classic Axl. He really blew me away, I am curious as to what he runs backstage for during each song - oxygen?

The guitars however sounded a little sloppy to me, they seemed clearer and like they were playing the exact notes with Buckethead and Robin, this show they just sounded noisey and like the guitarists didn't worry about playing the songs exactly like they were on the albums. (maybe the sound was just off last night?)

So go and see them if you haven't, Axl's back!!!

The Calgary crowd seemed awesome to me, it was nice hearing people scream out Axllllll!!!! They even seemed to be into the guitar solos, Richard Fortus's was probably the most interesting solo I've ever heard, I'm usually bored to death with those things!

You nailed everything I was thinking. Sure 06'-'07 was pretty great, but NOTHING like this, and this is what....the 5th or 6th show of the tour so far??? If they tour for the next 2 years as Axl said he was planning to....like this...then they won't have any problem garnering success in the U.S. again. I think that's going to be their biggest hurdle, because it seems like people in the U.S. are far more skeptical than anywhere else. I think they'll win them over this time!

Guns 'n Roses lightens up for Calgary crowd

CALGARY- It would no doubt be hasty to try and claim that Axl Rose has lightened up.

It was only a month ago that one of rock's most notorious attack dogs made headlines for swinging punches at a member of the paparazzi. Speculating that he's mellowed seems awfully rash.

But damned if Calgary didn't catch the lighter side of the Guns N' Roses hellspawn Saturday night at Saddledome.

For one thing, the 47-year-old frontman hit the stage relatively early ? around 10:15 ? which is shockingly cordial behaviour for Rose, who started closer to midnight the last time he came through town.

Then there was the fact that, by all appearances, he seemed to be having a ball from the get-go. After kicking off his nearly three hour set with the blazing hard rock of new tune Chinese Democracy, Rose then bitched to the crowd of 9,000: ?my people decided to leave me at the hotel. . . . I had to catch a cab here.? (It seemed like a dubious tale to me. Couldn't one get beheaded for that in Axl Land?)

In the past, such a story might be Axl's excuse for burning down the 'Dome with everyone in it. But Saturday night, he registered his annoyance with little more than an evil grin, seemingly resigned to it.

Then, over the course of a sprawling, ambitious and mostly great rock show, he kept the levity coming, from cracks about Tiger Woods to the appearance of his old buddy Bubbles from TV's Trailer Park Boys, who toured with GN'R back in 2006.

Joking about their mutual love of tacky porno movie titles, the pair then downed tequila shots served by a bevy of lovely ladies before Bubbles sang his signature song, the country strummer Liquor and Whores, while Rose sang harmony.

It was a fun moment that had the crowd howling.

Even Rose's physical appearance seemed like that of a man more at ease than in the past. Gone were the angrily tight corn rows of Rose's last Calgary appearance. Saturday he hit the stage wearing sunglasses, a fedora and a bandana over his scruffily kept and fairly short red hair. He wore ripped jeans and an unbuttoned, untucked dress shirt which didn't cover up the minor paunch he's developed over the years.

It was one of many outfit changes, but other than the top hat and red velvety jacket he sported at one point, nothing Rose wore seemed overly image conscious.

None of this is to suggest that Axl wasn't taking his concert seriously, however.

Far from it. Backed up mightily by the seven heavyweight musicians whom he's currently calling Guns N' Roses (Axl is the only original Gunner left in the band) Rose led his army through lethal versions of his biggest hits, as well as a feast from Chinese Democracy, the album that he took 14 years to create.

Among the classics ? all of which were received rapturously ? was It's So Easy, still full of violent, punk spitfire, and Mr. Brownstone with it's mean blues-metal beat. There was Welcome To The Jungle, accompanied by deafening fireworks, which seemed to knock out a speaker momentarily (again, Rose took it in stride), as well as Sweet Child of Mine, and, come encore time, Paradise City and Patience.

The Elton John inspired power ballad November Rain went over with roars of approval too. That one's always been too overwrought for my liking, but Rose delivered the tune beautifully.

For the majority of the evening his legendary voice was in top form, banshee-like on the rockers but emotive, stirring and powerful on the ballads. When Rose hits his mark vocally, he's like a man possessed.

That was most evident in the ballads from Chinese Democracy. Street of Dreams was maudlin on record, but Rose delivered the tune with such striking passion live that it couldn't be denied. The same goes for the theatrical This I Love, which even seemed to win over the most hardened headbangers.

Still, some grumbling could be heard as Rose and company worked the Chinese Democracy record hard.

That disc sold disappointingly compared to the big business GN'R did in its heyday, and, consequently, some fans who were hungry for the classics had little patience for the new material. That's too bad because the majority of Chinese Democracy is excellent, and, for the most part, it came across as such at the 'Dome. Highlights from the album included the Nine Inch Nails-like Better, which deserved to be a huge hit, and the bitterly twisted ballad Sorry.

Sure, there were the odd songs that needed to be tuned up, like the choppy Shackler's Revenge, or, dropped, like the overblown Madagascar, but by and large the Chinese Democracy material proved its worthiness.

So did the current members of Guns N' Roses, actually.

I miss Slash and the boys as much as the next fan, and, truthfully, I still have trouble accepting the new group as GN'R. To me, they're the members of Axl Rose's solo band.

But that crew ? which includes Tommy Stinson, former bassist of The Replacements, along with guitarists Richard Fortus, DJ Ashba and Ron ?Bumblefoot? Thal ? all have much to offer.

Rose seems determined to prove that with extended solo spots for each of them. While the odd impressive moment came from those spots, a lot of it was indulgent ? fat that could have been trimmed away for an even stronger show.

Still, the great moments far outweighed the shaky ones Saturday at the 'Dome, and the opening acts were a part of the plus side.

Underrated Toronto rocker Danko Jones was a blast with his cocky, charismatic stage presence and molten-metal garage rock.

Hard rock animal Sebastian Bach, former lead singer of Skid Row, was a kick too. The big knucklehead is absolutely dedicated to the business of old school headbanging and at the 'Dome he punched his way through a set that was full of wicked energy, even if it was dated. At 41, Bach still wields plenty of magnetism, not to mention a mean rock 'n' roll scream.

the moderators can merge this into the main Calgary show thread if they feel it belongs there.

im just happy that reviewers are finally starting to give credit to this accomplished, brilliant band of ours. :) although, of course there are some points on which I dont agree with the writer.

do you have floor seats for all shows AMM?

Not doing floor for any of the shows, I'd only do that for a small venue like the Hammerstein where I'm guarenteed a superb spot.

Why does it seem to me that the reviewer thinks he is a movie critic?  He/She talks about long solos being bad?  The more I think about it the more I think people have gone soft on Rock.  Most the music I listen to comes from Europe because those bands have guitar solos and play music not just 3 and 4 cord crap.  GnR is one of the only bands still doing REAL ROCK shows.

Also I suspect the writer was dictating this article since I don't think the writer can read.  Comments about Rose coming on late when they started the show 30 min early boggles the mind.  Maybe this writer should stick to covering "Hanna Montana" and the "Wiggles" if the show is to late for him/her.

during the last part of Street Of Dreams, Axl and me locked eyes, and we were basically singing at eachother the "Only memories" line! he had this HUGE SMILE on his face, and laughed a bit and then finished the song! I spent almost a grand to fly out to see them (which is all the money i have since im 16), so my whole trip was made in that moment.

you can see it a bit in this video (im front row, he turns and stares right at me)

I see the Calgary Sun article was updated today, and says there were 10,000 fans at the concert.

http://www.calgarysun.com/entertainment/music/2010/01/17/12504086.html (http://www.calgarysun.com/entertainment/music/2010/01/17/12504086.html)

But it was apparent most of the 10,000 fans who took in the Saddledome show were there to see Rose

yup par for the course.  Most of the negative comments come from people who want a rock show to fit into their life instead of taking a break from their life and going to a rock show.  Either that or the show started to late is the other negative comment.  so basically people who have no brain.  As any show that starts at 8pm listed on the tix and has 2 openers is gonna start before 10pm is kidding themselves.

This attitude also comes from the bands who are "pick our setlist" crap.  People seem to think bands are an all request radio show or something.

I would love to see more of the stage photos.  Showing more of what the overall effect of the stage is like but might not be possible
