Fresh earthquake hits east Japan's Izu Peninsula

TOKYO, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- A fresh quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 hit Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan Friday morning, following a similarly strong temblor that occurred late Thursday night.

    The quake briefly suspended Shinkansen bullet train services, and a woman was taken to a hospital in the city of Ito in the east of the peninsula for treatment of injuries from a fall, according Kyodo News.

    There were no immediate reports of damage from the 8:45 a.m. earthquake. No tsunami warning was issued.

    The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake originated at a shallow depth below sea level off the east of the peninsula. It occurred nine hours after a similar temblor shook the same area, prompting the agency to warn that a series of quakes could follow.

    Both earthquakes logged lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in some parts of the peninsula, including Ito.

    The agency observed quakes with an intensity of 3 four times in the same area between Thursday midnight and 6 a.m. Friday along with a frequent number of smaller temblors, the Kyodo report said.

Like others have said, don't hold your breath. The only surefire way to see these guys live is to be there. I sure as hell hope they do put out a live DVD sooner  rather than later though. It would be great to stick that on for all those 'it's not GNR anymore' haters, and show them what this lineup is capable of.

About a dvd/blu ray: All these shows are filmed for live feed on the big screens. It's not the same as filming for a dvd. It's useless even thinking about a dvd because it needs much more planning. You can't just use the same source.
It's great for us fans and awesome for a bootleg but not for an actual release.
It sucks, but it's true.

Besides, a three hour show wouldn't fit on a double layer dvd ;)

A bootleg could be shot in Full HD and then made it in a blu-ray. The band could release it as Full HD too, for free, in YouTube Full HD videos.

Wow.  :o  I haven't been this excited about Gnr since the Hammerstein shows and from the looks of it, these last two shows blow those away. Our fair haired child seems to be really happy and DJ is a very nice fit. Pilferk, darknemus, Jazjme....Muscle Mike...Falcon...if you are still around. Tank is always in the house. Madagas would be proud. ;)

It's starting to feel like it did 18 years ago, when you didn't know what to expect going into a GN'R show (and I'm not talking about drama, that was actually a very small but widely publicized factor), I mean in terms of the shows being more organic and spontaneous, like a band who came up together. They seem to be having fun and not really caring about the press or this and that. The band seems more relaxed than it's ever been, I think. The comfort level seems very high. I guess it's the old classic formula for success, doing something you love without a bunch of BS going on.

How cool was this show?

95% of Chinese Democracy was played, which is extremely amazing
75% (9 songs, for 3/4) of Appetite for Destruction.

Would this be repeated? I'm not so sure, so all in all...

This show!! This one in particular has got to make it to DVD!! No matter if there were some mistakes on some songs, the whole complete show, this is HISTORY!! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!

If The World (I mean the whole one), somebody please?

after watching all of those clips from the 4 concerts what amazes me most, besides his fantastic voice, is the way axl still moves onstage. it's like going back 15-20 years and watching him perform on the uyi-tours.

there's no denying that axl sounds better than ever on these asian dates, BUT however, his voice do crack on occasion.....but it just adds somewhat to the charm.....only downside i've heard in real voice cracking so far is the last line of TIL from taipei

i guess some people love memorex...  To me the "fuck-ups", though i wouldn't  call them even mistakes, are part of a live show, and really add to it rather than detract.  i've always loved his live vox anyway.  His improved technical skill, or maybe concentration?, just gives it some new flavor.

more than half of the venue seats were filled. (the parts that werent full were mainly
behind the stage and on the sides anyways.. so they must have had 25,000 or 30,000
ppl in the end...much better than i predicted.. so i apologise for making a comment
about them not being able to sell out Tokyo dome as they did a good job of that too!).

if i remember correctly Axl wrote in one of those nights he chated with the fans that Dont Cry was one of the songs he was wanting to play at the next tour.

Holy shit!! What an amazing setlist again. Axl sounds better than ever. They way he moves reminds me of the old days. He has lost nothing of his glory, he only improved.

The rest of the band sounds better than any line-up before. I must admit I was not crazy about DJ Ashba at first (the shallow side of me just based that on his emo look) but now I have to say his contribution to the band is amazing. He makes Gunners sound...better and he gives them this extra kick!

I hope 'Whole lotta Rosie' is a keeper. It's sounds fabulous, tight and kicks ass!

I do know the answer.

I am sure that there is a special place in Axl's heart where he will forever hold the memories of lost loved ones.

Bottom Line:

OBVIOUSLY, Axl has no problem with Ron playing Don't Cry as part of his solo on this tour or the last.

OBVIOUSLY, Axl has no problem joining Ron onstage to sing Don't Cry whenever or why-ever he feels like it. 

Axl is trying to get things done his way for our benefit and from the looks n' sounds of this Asian leg of the tour, his way is pretty fuckin' awesome!!!

What does it matter why he doesn't sing 'Don Cry' completely or not?? Mayby he is just bored by it, who knows (don't forget it's the first Gunner songs ever). Some of you really look to far into things.

Anyway, they did play 'Whole lotta Rosie' and 'Nice Boys'. That is fucking great!! I can't get over that. I hope for Breakdown or Estranged one day, but that is just a wish, not a demand. I am perfectly happy with how the setlists are these days  ;D

if that doesn;t happen I beg to God, that someone filters a bootleg, a PRO shot would be stunning and marvelous.

I doubt Axl needs the idea of a live DVD propositioning to him. He's bound to know that the fans want it (in fact, I believe attempts were made at the New York shows in '06 for a DVD?), there's just probably some logistical or legal difficulties in the way of making it a reality.

For the last couple of weeks everything's just perfect except for the TIL solo, DJ should learn to play that :)

Wish we could have proshot DVDs of all these shows, the band is totally on fire!

At the end, what most impresses me is the how this guy "Bumblefoot" rocks! Even Robin?s solos when played by bumble are absolutely perfect! He is the best guitar man on board!!   DJ still needs some practice on some Robin?s work, but he?ll get there... i think DJ fits better on Slash?s solos...  thats my impression from these initial gigs...  : ok:

It's even more amazing when you see him sing in person. It's quite mesmerizing.

Because it's authentic. He sings like he means every word! And it shows.



As an example, the ending in There Was A Time.

Hearing it on the album is awesome in itself, but when you stand and see him sing it, you're left speechless.

Where you on the side of the stage or in the audience?  It makes me wonder what was going on in 2002, he sounds fantastic on this tour!  He was good on the last one as well.

So you would reccomend seats where you are up a little bit and can see/hear everything.  I have noticed sometimes on the floor all the bodies block some sound.  Glad you were able to see these shows in person!

I'm not the person to recommend anybody anything.

Some people prefer to be in the front row to get a close look at what's happening on stage. Almost like a club gig.

Others prefer to have a designated seat and get the "full picture".


It all depends on what you're after.

I've found that the best place sound wise is in the first set of seats straight ahead from the stage just beyond the floor.

But I'm one who likes to sit now and then, or at least have a seat in between acts. They came in handy back in the 90's when you waited 2-3 hours for GNR to come on stage, sometimes at midnight. I didn't mind going seat less at the ballroom when they started back up in '06.

I was in the section straight ahead just beyond the floor in MSG New York back in 06 or 07 (can't even remember) and the sound and view were incredible.

I'm ending up going to 2 shows. I have lower bowl for one and floor for the other. I may do exactly that; watch the whole show from the back the first night then get up close on second night.

Yeah me too. There's pros & cons of each. It just depends what you want.

To me nothing beats being right up on the barrier. You can lean on the barrier which helps being on your feet so long & you can breath a bit better with clear space in front of you. You have a guaranteed un-obstucted view with no one in front of you. You have the best chance of touching the band, getting high-fives etc. & getting picks, drumsticks, setlist etc. You get clear & up-close pictures.The bass is so powerful it rips right thru you & it's just extremely intense being so close to the band. It seems like the band is playing just to you.

On the downside, sometimes the vocals go right over you. You can't see the whole stage & you not only have too arrive hours early to the venue, but your married to your spot until the shows over or you'll lose it. Not too mention- you better not have to take a piss!

I agree about the vocals getting buried when you are up front.   When I saw GNR in '06 at Gibson Ampetheatre I got about 4 rows from the front, I could still hear Axl but his voice sounded a lot lower in the mix than the instruments...then when I watched some videos on youtube from the same show(but further back), I could really hear Axl's vocals great and they were really loud and clear.   It was still so much fun to be up front and have Axl just a few feet away from you.

Maybe it's something about those concerts in particular, or just GnR? I find it weird because I have attended concerts from first row/barrier all of my life and never the voice was low in the mix to me. Actually, the only downside to me of being up front was the fact that you can't really move or leave your spot.

Am I just lucky? We can ask Jarmo, Lurk, RaspAxl and suntorytime if this time around, being up front, Axl's voice was buried or not.

This time I saw osaka within the first10?2 ish rows which was the closest to the stage ever for me and tokyo near the pa where I couldn't see anything on stage only crowd's heads when the screens were dark. at both shows axl's voice wasn't buried but clear  great and prominent. I wouldn't say 'loud'.

I don't know why no expert reviews mention this but the recent GNR shows had the quite strong feel of funk, soul/disco(?) of the 70s/60s(?). danceable. that was already there on cd I thought and is more remarkable live.

Good find! I knew I've heard that before, but would have never guessed it was Diana Ross stuff! And yes, the If The World outro was fabulous all these shows. Even more: i think i like the live version more than the studio one, and I do like the studio version a lot.

This show was great, specially the long Set-list as well as band's performance, including Axl, as much as he sounded weak and out of breath sometimes during the show, Axl was pretty well in general. This is definitely the best moment of New Guns era. It has a lot to to do with DJ Asbha and how this line-up is playin' live. It seemed the band had a very serious conversation about how they performing every song, respecting official version, above all amazing Slash's guitar.

Regarding to DJ, he reminds me a lot Slash, the way he play the guitar solos, throw the cigarrette or moves through the stage, Idem Bumble, he doesn't destroy (as Finck used to..) the solos, he perform them exactly like version's albums. I appreciate that.

I'm so happy, cause it semmed the freak era of GNR is over, current line-up is recuperating the essence and magic that had the past line-up, obviously it's not gonna be as great as early years, but at least, I'm really feeling that somehow I'm listenning Guns n' Roses !!.

They do not perform exactly like the album versions. Well, not Bumble anyway. He's playing some solos note for note, yes, but these guys are changing every song, adding licks, riffs and inventing things since the first show. Most of these changes came from Bumble, yes. Look at what they've done to KOHD. This is the most beautiful version of the song to date. Same with Jungle, those guitar slides that Bumble and Ashba are doing after the solo are really amazing - BBF with the fretless, Ashba with a metal thing in his finges. Ron does the Rocket Queen solo note for note, but he added a lick here and there and the intro with the fretless is so damn fresh and cool. So, even if these guys respect the old solos and play them close enough to the originals, they don't exactly copy what Slash and Izzy did in the past. They have their own style, their own ideas and I'm glad they share 'em with us. There's, of course, the excepcions like Nightrain, where Bumble shows what a real virtuoso can do and not make the solo sound like its coming from the outerspace. Even on that song, the first solo is closer to the original but in the end Ron does a really cool slide on the fretless. It has a rock n' roll vibe and sounds fresh to my ears. :)
