I've said this in other threads...

If anywhere, warmups would be West Coast. It makes no sense flying gear to NYC, then back to LA, then to Japan, then back to Canada.

That is very true. I can see them doing afew shows soon...not this month...but a week before they go on tour...Axl's got to warm up the golden pipes lol

The asia shows are the warm up shows....

I think if there'd be any warm up shows in the states.. we'd know by now..

But look at their travel plans for the announced dates... They are all back & forth

If there is a warm up gig and it's anywhere in the North East USA, I'm driving there. No question.

The first show on the Asian tour is in four weeks.

The previous warm up shows in 2006 were announced 3-4 weeks in advance.

You do the math....

i think the 01 01 01 show was announced like 3 weeks before the actual show.. there doesn't seem to be any buzz about a warm up show though.  i think its kinda unusual.. the new band had a warm up in 01.. then when bumble joined.. they did a warm up to get him up to speed.. i would think they would do the same for DJ..  purely guesing though.  given that the tour in japan.. if they did any warm up gig i would think it would be in LA or vegas.

I'm not going to be disappointed if there aren't warm up shows, just saying that it would be cool if there were. And if they were anywhere in the North East US, I'd drive to one.

I always felt that "warm-up" meant generating some early buzz in bigger cities around the tour, not getting the band up to speed on playing.

I think our time is out for a warm-up show...unless it is one show scheduled in LA at the last minute...but I am not getting my hopes up at this point

It doesn't take as long to schedule a show in the city where all your gear is.  Contrast that with shipping all your stuff across the country.

I know there probably won't be warmup shows, but I'm holding out hope damn it!

its too late for a warm up
If you are rehearsing at 'an arena'...I would assume you could very quickly arrange for staffing/security/vending to be on hand (like a weeks notice), and rip out a 2+ hr set.  I know nothing...but I just wouldn't rule anything out.  I do tend to believe there is some symbolism in opening this tour in Taiwan...a Chinese Democracy.   Any 'warm up' shows could steal/reduce that headline/impact.

A warm up show at a club usually doesn't steal the thunder of an overseas concert legs opening night IMO

No not the 'thunder' of the concert itself...nothing would take that away from GnR fans IMO...but the press would jump on the warm-up shows, blow their headlines, talk their trash, and lose interest - that was my point.  With Taiwan as the opener it will be hard for even hardcore Axl-haters (Dick Small for example) to ignore the 'Chinese Democracy' tie in, huge show, and get positive/neutral press in ways they normally don't (like NYT). : ok:

I still think they might throw a "surprise" gig somewhere in L.A. or N.Y. in the next week or two. Perhaps not play "the show" that they are planning on for the tour, but, maybe just some classic tunes and a few new ones to get the band fired up!

Perhaps...perhaps not.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. A smaller warm up date would be cool without the whole show but I get what you're saying.

I wouldn't say "the show" itself has been hyped alot, but I am looking forward to a big production given Ron's tweets.

Even a small surprise accoustic set somewhere would be pretty cool before they hit the road.

I had this idea today that maybe they could do something like Pink Floyd used to do in the 70s; play the album in it's entirety, take a break then do a second set of hits. That'd be sweet.

I say this because I wonder if a "show" of sorts is being planned around the album from track to track. That'd be killer!

Russ, you need to channel that thought to the band. That would surely kick hinder, with "CD" being a great opener and all. I'm just a bit excited about this tour, seeing that there's a whole new album of delicious tunes to draw upon vs. the previous leak tours. ;D

Even if they didn't do the "CD In It's Entirety" thing... I'm SOOOOO hoping they open with the title track at least.

It's not nearly as common as it used to be..but we used to see surprise warm up gigs in CT all the time.

In New Haven, at Toad's place...there were TONS of bands that would schedule a show under some bogus name, a couple/few weeks before their tour started (and the show would be a week or less before the tour), and would just do a one off show.  It would bear little resemblance to the full tour...not in terms of set list or stage setup (if you saw Toads...it's a small club) or anything like that.  They'd just do an hour (or so) set, probably just to get their juices flowing and comfortable with playing together, as a band, in front of an audience.

Doesn't happen much anymore, I don't think.  Different times and all that.  Word spreads too quickly, you get reviewers and bootlegs of the shows, etc.  But it USED to be GREAT.  I spent many a night down there, hearing some GREAT bands play.

Metallica did this summer in Texas if I remember right...but it was for something to do with Guitar Hero. Just a secret show under a weird name.

GN'R has done things not many other bands do.

Like play an acoustic set at 4am after playing a sold out Wembley Arena...

Or jam at an Osaka night club after ending the tour....

Copy and paste from the history section:

July 22nd, 2007 - After the last show in Japan, several band members head out into the Osaka night to celebrate.
In the early hours of the 22nd, Axl, Tommy, Ron, Frank along with Bubbles and classical pianist friend Takayoshi Azuma jam on a bunch of tunes at Osaka club "Live and Bar 11". Among the songs performed were Liquor & Whores, It's Not Unusual (Axl and Bumblefoot on vocals), Whole Lotta Love, Beautiful (Bumblefoot on vocals), Angie (Bumblefoot on vocals), Used To Love Her, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, I Want You To Want Me, Strutter (last three with Bumblefoot on vocals), Whole Lotta Rosie, Patience, and Nice Boys

And then straight to the hotel to check out and off to the airport to check in!

I don't remember the cab ride from Osaka to the airport though.... I managed to stay awake at the airport though. Just because I was too scared to sleep. Scared of missing the flight if I passed out before I made it to the gate!  :hihi:
