Title: Moon Man 4 $ale!!
Post by: LIGuns on November 07, 2009, 10:24:18 AM
According to The Pulse of Radio, a 1988 MTV Moon Man award for "Best New Artist In A Video," given to GUNS N' ROSES for their "Welcome To The Jungle" clip, has been acquired for sale by music memorabilia clearinghouse Rockaway Records.

The statue belonged to former GUNS manager Alan Niven, who wrote an accompanying letter in which he says, "In 1988 this 'Moon Man' was presented to me in my capacity as manager of GUNS N' ROSES...it ought to have really been offered since the video 'concept' was mine ? but then it should have been presented to the talents I stole from ? the makers of the movies 'Midnight Cowboy', 'The Man Who Fell to Earth', and 'Clockwork Orange'."

The award is available at the Rockaway site for a mere $13,500.

I think this seems to pop up on Ebay from time to time, so who knows what's real and what isn't. Regarding his illustrious concept: What's so great about coming up with a video of a bunch of guys playing in a band together. It's not like he had the November rain "concept."

This certainly doesn't pop up on ebay from time to time!  You don't ever see GNR Moonmen on ebay.

It's the real deal!

This is only the second one I have seen up for sale. Dizzy sold one a few years ago. I guy in Australia bought it. But to get an old one like this would be pretty damn cool. The Price is way to high in my book.

It's in the ball park of previous prices.  Here is a Sweet Child one that sold in 2004 for $14,400 US

But I agree it's an expensive piece to purchase.

Maybe not this particular one, but there is an MTV trophy that pops up from time to time on Ebay. in fact, when it does, there are threads posted in this section, telling everyone about it.  I was merely telling people to watch out. It's hard to authenticate some of these things.

I've still never seen a GNR MTV Award on ebay and I check GNR stuff every day and have done for years (I've got a bad collecting habit).

I have never seen a thread in here about one on ebay either.

This is the only thread I could find related to Moonmen:

its a pretty cool piece to have and am sure it would look cool/would be a talking point in any household but would you really want an award that was presented to/gained by someone else (band member or not)

Thats kinda like buying someones war medals to me.

buying a prize that doesn't belong to you, got to wonder how it was "aquired" by anyone in the first place, esp since none of the band have died yet (?)

$14,000 for such a thing is a lot of money, no matter how you look at it, sure you could commision one to be made for much less
