Title: Tickets - Floor or Seats
Post by: Mark7955 on October 19, 2009, 07:15:10 AM
Just a question out of curiousity.  Do you feel the GN'R experience is better from the floor (standing room) or in seats with a possible better view.  I'm also trying to judge which to buy for the Feb 4 show, I had seats right next to the stage in Halifax in 2006 and that was unreal.

On the floor, especially up front, is a far more immersive experience.  Now, I'm not going to lie, every time I've been on the floor I was pretty drunk so that may have played a role, but if I had to choose, I'd go with the floor.  You feel like you're part of the show, rather than just watching...

If you've done seats before, why not switch it up?

I was on the floor for the first Hammerstein show and it was awesome. The last few times I've seen them since 02, the floor in the arenas was GA so I just sent in the seats in the lower bowl.

If the floor were assigned seating, I'd gladly pay more for closer seats. If it's GA, I'm just going to get lower bowl again.

You can always by seats and go down to the floor if you like, then you have the best of both worlds .

Any place that I'v ever been to, if you have seats then you'r usually not allowed to go down to the floors.   : ok:

floor is better for me, I can feel more energy and have more fun, usually on the floor u will find the die hard fans, just be early so u can go to the front and u will see Axl's red shoes in front of ur face lol  :peace:

Depends what you're after.

In the front, you're obviously closer (Mr Obvious) but if you go back a bit, you get to experience the full production in all its glory. You see the whole stage, the video screens and whatever else they have on stage.

Seats guarantee you the spot that is printed on your ticket.... If you don't feel like standing in line for hours before the doors open, maybe that's not a bad thing.

I'm 36, I prefer the assigned seating. Although I had GA for the 2000/2001 Vegas show and the 1st 2 Hammerstein shows.. But in a hockey areana GA is too large of a scale..Go w/ seating..Hopefully they play Nassau Coliseum on Long Island..It's a smaller arean than the over-rated MSG. Not a bad seat in Nassau Coliseum.

Any other band, I like seats. However, for Gn'R, the floor. That way I'm up front everytime.

Floor. You're freer.

Japan shows are all seating this time tho. It's better when the venue has both the standing and seats for you to choose.

You can always by seats and go down to the floor if you like, then you have the best of both worlds .

How nice!  :o

I think they require you to have a standing ticket to get down to the floor.

That's been the case at the shows I've been to....

Imagine if they allowed everybody in an arena down on the floor.....

In 2006 I went into the seating for all the shows - found that I had a better view, could see the whole production like Jarmo said and wasn't queueing for hours on end.  Or maybe it was because I am getting old.....

its got to be the floor if you wanna have fun!

i don't usually enjoy the people around me if im sitting, they tend to be more boring or families etc   :hihi:

thought that was too good to be true.

So you need 2 tickets for that or maybe in msaxl43's place they have special tickets that cost double.

You need a ticket that says you're allowed on the floor...

The venue can pass out wristbands. Or they check your ticket every time you enter the floor.

Right there with you.

I'm 35.  When I was 15 (or even 25)...I woulda taken floor every SINGLE time.  It was worth the pain and the adrenaline rush from both being that close, and the energy of the crowd, was just AWESOME.

But now?  I prefer a seat.  I don't have to elbow, push, shove, mosh, and generally get the crap kicked out of me for 3 hours (or more) and I don't have to turn into "Riot Cop" to hold a spot. I know where I"m going to be, and what view I'm going to have.  It's just a lot more enjoyable.

You want your tickets to say "GA-Floor" or "General Admission-Floor".  If they say that...you get to line up (get there early) hours before the show to try to get to the front of the pack....where' you'll fight a constant battle to stay there and not get "moved" by some other yahoo who wants to get closer.  Or you'll get caught up in the press of humanity and get pinned against a barrier, wall, or other immovable object.

Keep in mind, I'm not baggin on it.  It's a fun way to see a show provided you're into the experience.  As you get older, at least for me, it's not quite so much fun anymore.  We old folk will leave that kinda stuff to you youngsters.  :)

Was on the GA-Floor in Vegas in 06 and had the best time ever right up against the railing. Sat in seats for the November 5th show and had an alright time. If you are a die-hard and want the best time -- I suggest the GA floor. If you have 'other interests' then well of course a seat is better ;)

MSG aint overrated.  In the many shows I've seen at both venues, MSG always has much better sound.  No contest.

Depends on the venue layout.
When Guns played in Sydney last I had section A floor. I was front row right side of middle (6 hour wait mind you) It was unreal, the bass went straight through me in the intro to WTTJ like nothing I have ever felt.
It can be tuff and rough if your not very tall being so close to the front, but being so close to them that you can see the sweat beeding on their faces is by far worth it.
One thing  though was at times being so close to the front speakers/bass I couldn't hear axls voice very clear in a few songs.

The next night I had section A seating. Different experience, got an awesome view of the whole show, sound was perfect and no pushing.
If you can't get the best seating available I would recommend the floor 15 rows back for sure !!! I'm glad I did both options

NYC Warm-Up's don't really make sense, since they would have to fly their gear from LA to NYC. Then back to LA then to Japan to start the tour. If anywhere, Warm-Up's would be (IMO) in California.

In 2006 I had floors at ACC in Toronto, was real tight, not much shoving your way to the front, basically rows of people standing, so where you were before GNR came on is where you watched them from.

In  2002 I had upper bowl in London Ontario and i'm almost 100% that there were actual seats on the floors there, no GA.

Sounds like the usual standing floor. You can also go late to stay cosy in the rear of the floor, can't you?

Cheers now I understand that in North America you have a seating arrangement called general admission and like in clubs or trains there are seats that aren't assigned and you aren't bound to them. I think that's a very nice option.

I'd prefer floor if I didn't have to worry about pissing!  Problem is, ideally you want to have some drinks, get there early enough to get a good spot, but then when you have to pee you either a. hold it in, b. go the the bathroom and lose your spot c. go to the bathroom and obnociously make your way back to your spot, or d. wear a diaper.  I'd typically rather have a seat and not have to deal with that!

It depends a little.. I don't have the patience to be in line 48h before the show to get a good spot on the floor. But if it's a smaller place, it doesn't really matter. And I don't want to be in the first row anyway. In '06 in one GN'R show I was seated right next to the stage and it was fucking great, really good seat. But if the seat is far away from the stage, I'd rather be standing on the floor 'cause I'd be closer to the stage. And for example in Helsinki Olympic Stadium it's so goddamn windy that the sound cuts off here and there if you're sitting in the far end of the stadium.

Sooooo.. I'd try to get a floor ticket, just to make sure that I can hear everything..

100% floor!! Its all part of the experience, including having a great pre and post party. In 06 I was floor front row in both Halifax and Saint John, no problems at all. I'm trying to rally a few people to hit the Moncton and Halifax concerts this time around....a 2 day party  .....then back to reality and work  :(

I'm tall (6'3) so the floor is much more fun to me-at a GNR concert, I'm assuming most people will be standing, even if there are seats on the floor (it seems mostly they are going no seats on the floor)-I've been to 2 concerts this year by more mellow acts-Elton John, the Moody Blues-where there were near fights because people are unsure whether to sit or stand-for a concert like those, never again-I'll sit in the upper sections-strange but true

I was there in 2006 and I found I could move through the crowd pretty well, getting as close as 2nd or 3rd row from the rail and back out if I needed a breather.  Obviously some people are going to fight to be able to stay exactly where they were standing, but for the most part people were ok with the typical pushing, swaying etc that comes with a good crowd.

Although I liked the floor for the Hammerstein Ballroom concert in 06, I prefer seats. There's possibility of crap going on like fights or stuff being thrown.  I'm too old for that now.

And at least in Hartwall Areena the floor is so empty that you can easily walk to a good spot when ever you want to. Not to the front row for sure, but pretty close anyway. And no, you don't have to use your elbows or piss people off.

And at least in Hartwall Areena the floor is so empty that you can easily walk to a good spot when ever you want to. Not to the front row for sure, but pretty close anyway. And no, you don't have to use your elbows or piss people off.

Next time you do that, speak Swedish with a loud voice! Let's see if you piss people off....

I just don't get the floor thing in the practical sense. I am gonna drink for a Rock show. I am going to do lots of things for a GN'R show and drinking is one of them. So there I am in the front on the floor. Oh shit I got to take a piss. Uh oh, I go pee come back...fuck me I am all the way back here now. Aint that a bitch.

So whats the deal. Do you fuckers not have any drinks if you are on the floor or what?

I only have a couple beers before a Gn'R show...other bands i'll get shit-faced. Some blow to keep me alert and not piss too, haha. After the show, it's time to party. But yeah. I like the floor just cause i like to be right in front.

Yeah maybe I should try that :hihi: Anyway, I'm wondering if the arena floors are always that empty.. I mean in every country/city. 'Cause in Hartwall Areena the floor is like 1/3 full when it's sold out.. or at least was when GN'R and Aerosmith played there, and they were both sold out.

Maybe it just looked so because people were thronging toward the stage.

I suspect that English spoken in a loud voice in a lobby pisses Swedes off.  :P

yes some liquids eg isotonic drinks. GNR is our natural high.

No, man! I have to be clear headed because I wanna enjoy all the single moment of the show! That's very important for me, I love Guns N' Roses, they are playing for us and I will be there to listening and to capture all the emotions that they pass on.

No, those numbers are just used for tracking purposes.  I have a stack of tickets from shows I've gone to that have been GA which have rows and seat numbers.

I think i'v seen that too on some tix, but was just curious because my other conformations didn't have numbers for tracking purposes? Just says GA-floors.

I have 3 floors for Hamilton, if anyone wants to trade for seats that are up close.....I'd be interested.

All the shows iv been too, and that doesn't include GNR because iv never seen them live old or new band (yeah, its a shame, but something always came up in the middle  :-\)
But all the shows iv been to... AC/DC, Rock In Rio Lisbon 2004(Metallica, Incubus, Sepultura, Moonspell, Slipknot) and also Korn, Muse, Linkin Park on the same day, i always went to the floor. Never experimented the seats, Its a lotta of fun in the floor, but on AC/DC's show for example it would have been better to stay in the seats! Cause they had this big ramp where angus walked and did his 20 minute solo, and i would have liked to have seen more of that :hihi:

Drink Whiskey! it doesnt make you piss as much as beer.  its easy enough to hold for an hour or two.

I know this really doesn't have anything to do with GNR, but since it IS a discussion about seats.

Has anyone ever had seats BEHIND the stage before?  It's all that is available for Pearl Jam in Hartford right now.  I've been waiting to see if better seats get released but it's been a few weeks and nothing yet.  The show is in 3 weeks or so.  I mean, the seats are close, lower level.  But, behind the stage?  Can that possibly be any good?

I've ad these kind of seats once and it really depend on the stage layout.  Mine was ok.  But for example, I recently went to see Bon Jovi and people who had seats behind the stage were really OK.  I mean, they didn't have a full view ALL the time, but the way the stage lay out is designed, they had a very good view 85% of the time.  I honestly thing that, depending on the stage layout, these seats are better than no seats at all.

Yeah, I'd be down for trying them out.  But my buddy isn't as willing for the $82 ticket price.

In relation to the original question.

I have to say out of the 14 times I've seen GN'R I've only sat twice, but both times the show was absolutely amazing. I sat this year in Toronto, and it was just brilliant because I could see the whole stage show.  :)

It really comes down to personal taste, and what you prefer. I love standing and being up front close to the band, but in my view, being in a reserved seating spot is just as good.  :D

I prefer a seat, only because I would not like standing the whole concert. I've seen them 3 times at a seat every time, besides you pretty much stand majority of the time but its nice to sit a little too.

I've sat in those exact seats, in the Civic Center (Xl Center..whatever) as a freebie about a half dozen times.

It's NEVER been a good seat.  Now, that could be because the bands stage setup was lousy and not conducive to sitting behind the stage.  I'll allow for that.  But, in general, the XL center, itself, has a CRAPPY concert setup with a pretty lousy (now a days) sound system that tends to get overwhelmed, easily.    Add to that you're pointing AWAY from all the amps and speakers and if you have the normal "default" XL center scaffolding stage setup...and you're not going to be able to see much, or hear much, and you're going to lose out on a LOT of the crowd energy.

Not, probably, what you wanted to hear.  But that being said, if the PJ stage is "open back" or "switch back", you might be OK.  Still, for 82 beans...I'm not sure I'd jump on it unless I just had to be there (ie: this was a GnR show).

I've seen PJ at the Dodge ('06 and '08) and they were GREAT shows...but even then, I don't think I'd pay that for those seats.  YMMV.

Check fansnap.com  You should be able to find better seats for not much more.  I'd even take uppers over behind the stage, for comparable dollars.

I've seen GNR 6 times, 4 times on the floor and twice in seats.  The two times with seats were at MSG, where IMO every seat is good.  It depends on the venue.  I will say that the best shows I have been to were when I was in the front row of GA.  Nothing beats being a few feet from your favorite band.  It is a hassle though, and can be uncomfortable if you are there for a long time, so I only go early and get close to the stage for my favorite bands, GNR, Metallica, etc..Other bands I get floor seats and just roam around where its not crowded.  Im really not into having an assigned seat at a rock show, unless its really close, then it is great.

Also I want to add.

What really determines if your seat or standing position is good, is the company you're in. It really does make a big difference, to the overall atmosphere.

If the people around you seem cool, and just want to have a good time, you are most likely going to have a brilliant show. But we've all been there when 1 or 2 idiots try to ruin the fun, and you don't need it when your trying to enjoy the show.
