Title: Most underrated song on Chinese Democracy?
Post by: The Catcher on June 09, 2009, 11:35:06 PM
Which song on Chinese Democracy do you feel is the most underrated? And by that, I mean underrated by fans in terms of popularity in contrast to the quality of the song. In my opinion, it would have to be Chinese Democracy. This song is overlooked so much, for a reason I will never understand. It's a good quality, kick-ass, in-your-face, cacthy rock and roll song. If The World is a close seconds. That song is a real gem. A very good ballad, with an amazing mix of funky bass and flamenco guitars. Listen towards the very ending. It's amazing. 8) So what song, or songs, do you feel is the most underrated on Chinese Democracy?

Edit: Although it may be loved by many, I also feel that Catcher In The Rye gets overlooked and underrated. It is perhaps the best song on the whole album.

I agree, Madagascar is definately underrated and among the very best songs on the album, possibly the best along with Catcher In The Rye and There Was A Time.

Rhiad is awesome, still don't know why people hate it so much.  If the World is the worst Guns N Roses song ever recorded.  ( I still like it, because I love everything GNR has done, but lets be honest, its their worst.)

I've actually forgotten to mention the song I've always felt was the most underrated: I.R.S.
I.R.S. is a real gem, a great rocker with tons of attitude, almost addictive to listen to.
So my new list in terms of how underrated songs they are would be as follows:

1. I.R.S.
2. Chinese Democracy
3. Madagascar
4. If The World
5. Catcher In The Rye

id say that chinese democracy is underrated.  The song rocks an is catchy as hell.  And IMO would make a better single than "Better".

Is there a poll anywhere on this board were people can vote for their favourite Chinese Democracy song?  It would be interesting to see how they'd rate.
Maybe Jarmo could create one and get us discussing positive things again?

Definitly Scraped, so much so I reckon would be great to use for BBC F1. The lyrics would fit perfectly with Buttons 'Im Unstoppable' Charge to the championship. For hamilton?? well the line  "lies that they tell you" fits perfectly.  :)

Yeah, I will definitely agree on Scraped.

Chinese Democracy and I.R.S. are two of the best rock songs of recent times, and it's a mystery how they only have 5 or 6 votes each.

I don't like the song IRS, for me that's the only GN'R song I really do not like.

Having said that; I would agree with CD, Cather or If the world as being most underrated

Scaped and Prostitute.  Prostitute is one of the top 5-10 they have EVER done.

The whole album.

A lot of people can't listen to these songs with an open mind. So they never give the songs a fair chance.

The first step is to forget about what it's not and just listen to what it is.

I think the whole cd is underrated. I can't even say that there is a weak track on this cd.
There were a few songs I thought they could of left off on Use your Illusion I & II.
But not this one. The only thing (and this is because I like producing my own music) is a few songs on the cd I would of made only a few minor changes that I thought the producer or (dare I say Axl) should of not done or left out. Other than that I really think someone should take this cd down to Washington D.C.  Rent out a huge sound system and a generator. Aim the speakers at the White House and blast this cd until the paint starts to scrape off of the White House!!!!!!  : ok: : ok:

Prostitute doesnt get enough love IMO
It's probably my favourite song along with There Was A Time
It's just an amazin song, the guitars are heavy and thunderous, the orchestra compliments them amazingly, the lyrics (for the mst part) are beautiful and heartfelt, axls singing is great...the song is just perfect, and the outro to the song is just a perfect way to end the album

scraped. it's one of my favs and it doesn't seem to get much love among gnr fans. i think it would have great potential commercially as well.

If the World   ...my personal favorite from the album; I get the sense it's more or less despised by many folks that favor AFD over UYI.

"Chinese Democracy" is underrated. Besides "Better," I think it's the best pure rocker on the album.

I don't think "Prostitute" is too underrated by the fans, but I don't think many of us truly realize just how damn great it is either. That song scares me actually, because one could easily interpret it as Axl's swan song, his final farewell: "Where would you go if I told you I love you / And then walked away." I remember some review of the album saying how you could almost visualize Axl walking down a long corridor never to be seen again as those final notes of the song slowly fade away. I think "Prostitute" is the most interesting song on the album, especially the lyrics.

"Madagascar" is also very underrated, but I just think that's because we fans had heard it so many times before the album even came out that we passed over it in favor of the newer tracks.

Riad.  It's a buzzsaw, and the type of song that people who were complaining about the album not being heavy enough should like, but in a lot of cases don't don't

I guess maybe because it is a very choppy song.  But it has a great bassline and riff and some of the best vocals on the album IMO

Better, cause it has potencial to be number 1 everywhere.

But in the GNR fans, Riad. Lots of peopledon't like it. I do. Axl's voice on the chorus after the solo make it worth every listen.

Correct, but I still don't like IRS. Cannot help it. It's really one the few, not to say maybe the only Guns song I really dislike.

IRS is one of the songs I liked initially.  Some of the others took some multiple listens.  I think the ROCK songs on the album are the most underrated.  I can't tell you how many times I've heard people complain that the band can't rock as well, the ballads are better, and at the same time they praise Buckethead yet say the songs he was most instrumental in creating are the worst.  Doesn't make any sense to me.  I love IRS, Scraped, Shackler's, etc.  But those 3 in particular seem to get a lot of hate for some reason.

I don't hate IRS, I just don't like it.
Also, I never heard Guns can't rock and their ballads are better... strange quote. Guns is fucking one of the bands that rock the most! Just look at their concerts

Chinese Democracy's a good choice.
Shackler's Revenge, Scraped have both not got the love they deserve from time to time, same with Riad. Honestly, the only song I ever skip is Madagascar. I know people will think I'm a horrible human being for saying this, but I just don't like it as much as the other songs.

However, the song the constantly surprises me is Prostitute. I seem to find something new in it every time I listen to it. I don't think it can be overrated, so therefore, maybe it's the one that's underrated. You just can't say enough good about it!

I also love Catcher

I'm actually astonished more people don't love "If The World".  It has gorgeous vocals and melodies from Axl, and Buckethead's acoustic guitar work and his electric solo are brilliant.

i'd say Riad and the Beduoins or Sorry.

Riad has some mind-blowing Robert Plant-esque singing from Axl and the guitar work is just frenetic. its full-on mayhem but it hasnt quite got its due from fans. I read though that it was appreciated on Rock Band and that's cool.  : ok:

Sorry is perfectly constructed. Some people have criticized the lyrics but I find them interesting and complex- there's anger but there's also determination, a level of sadness, a realism about the costs of battle. plus it has such a BEAUTIFULLLL guitar solo that I believe it ranks among the best GNR guitar solos of all time. the vocal delivery is controlled yet emotive and the way the song sounds is just amazing. the mixing is spectacular. just a brilliant song altogether.

IRS for sure, I just can't believe fans don't LOVE that song.  Axl just givin'er, especially last verse, how the fuck don't GNR fans dig that shit!!?  ???   Especially the contrast in his voice, starting with a vulnerable weak and fragile tone building to the last verse when he goes balls out....fucking great.

This I Love...without question. But honestly, I chalk that up to a lack of a video/radio single. I think the band/label dropped the ball on this one. Sweet Child o' Mine made Appetite, and TIL could have done the same sales wise for CD.  Unfortunately, it still hasn't cracked mainstream radio, and there's no video to speak of; not just for this song, but the entire album.
