Title: GNR List Of Demos 1986-1991
Post by: speedfreak on March 03, 2009, 08:45:46 PM
I posted this on another GNR forum, and thought that it might be of use to fans.

Here is a list of all the circulating demos and sessions by the old GNR. As far as I know, this list is complete. I've attempted to simplify things somewhat by listing the main bootleg CDs that they were originally found on. The times after the songs are only meant as a guideline. These songs exist on multiple unofficial releases and there are variances depending on the release, source tape etc. I didn't include radio edits or remixes, just studio demos.

Most of the Appetite era demos could be found on 3 main bootlegs: No Refrain, November Rain & The Rumbo Tapes.

The songs on No Refrain are from at least 2 different sessions. Trax 1-8 contain songs that ended up officially released (with crowd noise dubbed in). Also Slash's guitar is in the left channel. Trax 9 -12 are played faster and sound rawer, with Slash's guitar in the right channel. Trax 13-15 are unplugged

No Refrain Demos
---------------------
1. Jumpin' Jack Flash 3:35
2. You're Crazy 3:42
3. Reckless Life 3:13 (Live Like A Suicide version without crowd noise)
4. Heartbreak Hotel 4:22
5. Shadow Of Your Love 3:02 (was released on Live From The Jungle Japanese EP with crowd noise dubbed in)
6. Welcome To The Jungle 5:05
7. Move To The City 3:30 (Live Like A Suicide version without crowd noise)
8. Mama Kin 3:46 (Live Like A Suicide version without crowd noise)
9. Mama Kin 3:23
10. Heartbreak Hotel 4:33
11. Ain't Goin' Down [instrumental] 3:31
12. Jumpin' Jack Flash 3:21
13. Jumpin' Jack Flash [acoustic] 3:55
14. West Coast Junkie 0:38 (acoustic version of Move To The City that gets cut off)
15. November Rain [piano version] 9:42

The November Rain Demos sound more like rehearsal tapes than actual demos. They are played quite fast and raw, like the 2nd half of No Refrain.

November Rain Demos
--------------------------
1. Rocket Queen 6:05
2. Night Train 4:55
3. My Michelle 4:24
4. You're Crazy 3:25
5. Paradise City 5:39
6. Move To The City 3:18
7. November Rain [acoustic guitar version] 4:55
8. Shadow Of Your Love 2:41 (a cleaned up version was issued as the B-Side for Live And Let Die]
9. Reckless Life 2:48
10. Think About You 3:54
11. Welcome To The Jungle 5:00 (starts out with Axl asking "Are you guys ready?)
12. Don't Cry 5:19
13. Nice Boys 2:58
14. Back Off Bitch 4:40
15. Anything Goes 4:31

The Rumbo Tapes are from at least 2 different sessions. Half the songs are very early versions of Appetite-era songs. The other half use a drum machine.

Rumbo Tapes:
-----------------
1. The Garden 5:05 (w/ drum machine)
2. Don't Cry 4:40 (A cleaned up version was issued as the B-Side for Don't Cry)
3. Yesterdaze 3:39 (w/ drum machine)
4. Sentimental Movie 4:43 (w/ drum machine. Duff on vocals)
5. Bad Obsession 5:07 (w/ drum machine. Izzy on vocals)
6. Crash Diet 4:50 (w/ drum machine)
7. Anything Goes 5:09
8. Bring It Back Home 5:41 (w/ drum machine)
9. Back Off Bitch 4:50

11. Move To The City [acoustic] 3:46 (the first 40 seconds is found on No Refrain as "West Coast Junkie")
12. Too Much Too Soon 6:29 (w/ drum machine)
13. Just Another Sunday 4:34 (w/ drum machine)
14. Welcome To The Jungle 4:58

More early demos:
---------------------
1. Out Ta Get Me 4:00 (originally found on 44 Caliber Horticulture vinyl bootleg)
2. Rocket Queen [take II] 6:32 (originally found on 44 Caliber Horticulture vinyl bootleg)
3. Nightrain [alt. intro] 5:12 (originally found on Metal Petals vinyl. The beginning of the song is played like they played it live in 1986)
4. Sweet Child O' Mine 6:28 (originally found on Metal Petals vinyl.)
5. Mr. Brownstone 4:13 (originally found on Metal Petals vinyl.)
6. Crash Diet (alt. mix) 4:27 (on The Hell Revisited 3cd bootleg)
7. Instrumental Demo # 1 3:32 (on The Hell Revisited 3cd bootleg. Doesn't sound like anything recognizable)
8. Instrumental Demo # 2 3:34 (on The Hell Revisited 3cd bootleg. Doesn't sound like anything recognizable)
9. Nice Boys 2:42 (recently surfaced on some 80's Hair Metal compilation.  sounds like L.L.A.S. outtake)

Cornshucker demos:
------------------------
1. One In A Million 6:34
2. You're Crazy [acoustic] 4:28 (recorded in 1986. A cleaned up version was used as the B-Side to Welcome To The Jungle)
3. Used To Love Her / Cornshucker 5:51
4. Patience 6:00 (Same as the final version?)

Many of the Use Your Illusion demos and sessions were leaked in May 1991 on a bootleg tape called "Axl's Advance Copy". Most of the songs are very similar to the final versions except that they aren't fully mixed and there are some minor vocal differences. This tape plus the Civil War demos and some December 1989 rehearsals were all remastered and re-released on CD

Use Your Illusion Outtakes CD1:
------------------------------------
1. Dust N' Bones 4:57

That's it, as far as I know. The It's So Easy instrumental demo is a fake, the My World and Estranged demos are fakes and so is everything on the "UYI and TSI Sessions" 2cd bootleg. Please feel free to add anything that I've missed.

thats a project i really wonder why we havent completed ever up to 2009.
no time for verifying this all but some things got right into my eyes:

- in general ALL unofficial demo releases should be compared exactly qualitywise, concentrating on the late 80s/early-mid 90s "original" releases as most of the later versions are just rip offs from them.
- "in the studio" and "44 Caliber Horticulture" (cd) are also considered to be good sources
- channels left/right:
if Slash is on the left the transfer probably was just unintentionally made wrong (like connecting the wrong cables -> left is right/right is left....can easily be fixed without quality loss)
- Cornshucker demos:
4. Patience 6:00 (Same as the final version?)  <--- different for sure!

Although it's cool that they do, I'm surprised they allow the "Use Your Illusion Q" stuff to be shared. They are basically better sound quality versions of the originals (Expect "14 Years").

...It's a pity Slash didn't see it that way in his book.

Is "In The Studio" any different than "The Rumbo Tapes"??  I thought they were the same (they are both 66m56s)
I heard 44 Caliber Horticulture years ago, and I seem to recall excess noise (tape hiss) and the songs sounded slightly sped up / pitched sharp.

- channels left/right:
if Slash is on the left the transfer probably was just unintentionally made wrong (like connecting the wrong cables -> left is right/right is left....can easily be fixed without quality loss)

If you listen to the official releases of those songs with the crowd noise dubbed in,  Slash's guitar is also in the left channel.  It was definitely meant to be that way.

- Cornshucker demos:
4. Patience 6:00 (Same as the final version?)  <--- different for sure!

Isn't it the same vocal and instrumental takes as the final version, just not mastered and mixed?

havent compared "the rumbo tapes" , "in the studio" and "44 caliber horticulture" exactly.
my main thinking in those unofficial demo releases is the more early release the better in quality. sure it depends on source and transfer but back then bootleg companies liked to re-rip existing unofficial cds for (mostly more bad) re-pressings so they could make $$ aswell.

channels left/right:
hmmm, good point but maybe still a mistake after all? the slash man mostly is on the right later and live aswell.

cornshucker demos-patience:
you're right, same version as you've described. i mixed it up with "one in a million", sorry.

here you go.  If memory serves, it's a bootleg released by Alan Niven.  Jumpin' Ax Flash, it is called, and as well as the LLAS stuff, it has really good studio covers of Jumpin Jack Flash and Heartbreak Hotel, as well as You're Crazy, Shadow of your Love and Welcome To The Jungle.  No Nice Boys though.  Sorry.

Edit;
Does anyone want any other demos uploaded?  I can put up Rumbo Tapes, The Hell Revisited and GnR Ruffs if anyone likes, and a fair bit of other stuff as well.  Only im MP3 format though.  On GnR ruffs, the instrumental version of Estranged is awesome, and the 14 Years has an alternate outro that is amazing, and should have been on the album.

diggin' out this topic again!
unlike other fan communities the so called "gnr community" has never combined a proper list with the best quality versions of these demos/versions/unreleased songs. having these songs circulating for about 20 years.....actually we pretty much sucked in this and should work on that!
proper name listing would be the first issue IMO. it doesnt help only reading "version 1", "version 2".....how can you know which version this is? at least there must be some small additional other info for being able to quickcheck what version we're speaking about. for example:

You're Crazy - Demo (Version 1, "let me explain" Axl talking in the beginning)
You're Crazy - Demo (Version 2, with some deep Axl voice in the end)

the song lenght doesnt help much at all as there are many bootlegs flying around with unknown analog transfers with speed issues. the exact lenght only should be given out after we've found and proper edited the final version (IMO).

question 1 about the list above:
It's So Easy [Censored Version] UK 7" DJ Promo, alternate vocal take with diff. lyrics

^^is this one for real at all? i've never heard an "its so easy" demo or an alternate vocal take.

question 2:
anyone with proper knowledge (and the will to spend some time for this project) up for this?
serious replies only please....not the usual "where can i d/l this or that song?"

Almost 100% certainly just 2:

1) Don't Cry b-side version (4:40) recorded 1985/1986.
2) Sound City Studios version (5:10) recorded June 4 or 5, 1986. That one can be found on bootleg Sessions.

edit: Seems there's actually a third one from the bootleg Metals Petals.

..and I have another different version, but I could not find it on youtube.

First video = same version as on third video, just with a better source and possibly also with edits.

If you have another different version, it's live, an edit or something else. Feel free to upload it on www.sendspace.com so it can be verified what it is.

Demos we have multiple versions of:
Jungle 3
Rocket Queen 2
You're Crazy 2
Anything Goes 2
Move To The City   3
Nice Boys   2
Reckless Life   2
Mama Kin   2
Shadow of your love   2
JJF   3
Heartbreak Hotel   2
Don't Cry   3
Back Off Bitch   2
November Rain   2
Ain't Goin' Down  2 (1986 and 1991)

Edit: See topic above. Numbers changed in accordance with that.

So with my hardrive dying and having to d/l a load of stuff I've been sorting through all the demos and whatnot that are out there. I found this thread and it's been a real help so far. Ages ago I bought a bunch of boots off ebay and I ripped all those yesterday, sorting through the stuff to keep and the stuff to ditch. So basically, this post is for people that are new to the game and are wondering which of the various bootlegs to d/l in order to get all the demos. Now most of you will probably know all this, so forgive me if I'm repeating stuff that's been posted before - this is just stuff I've found which I think'll help other fans.

I own copies of the following: the Sessions 2cd boot, No Refrain, Unwanted Illusions (Trashed Illusions), Practice for Destruction and two different versions of November Rain.

*Practice For Destruction isn't needed unless you can't get your hands on a copy of the 'Live From The Jungle EP' or find a d/l of it. The last 3 live tracks on this boot (It's So Easy, Knockin' On Heaven's Door and Whole Lotta Rosie) can be found on the aforementioned EP. Everything else on the boot can be found elsewhere.

*Unwanted Illusions/Trashed Illusions (same boot, different covers) isn't really needed as the material is available on other boots. In my opinion, the only tracks worth having on this cd are 'Axl's Blues', which is basically the band jamming while Axl tells a story about a barfight, and the performance of Yesterdays in a bar, entitled 'Scrap Bar Daze'.

*Welcome To The Sessions isn't needed unless you want to source the songs from a vinyl rip.

After listening to 'No Refrain', 'November Rain' and the 2cd 'Sessions', it's my opinion that you really only need the 2cd 'Sessions' boot, as all the material on both 'No Refrain' and 'November Rain' can be found on the 'Sessions' discs. The material on 'No Refrain' is noticeably louder than on the 'Sessions' disc, but I still prefer the 'Sessions' boot for the overall sound. Out of the two versions of the 'November Rain' boot (one with a grey cover, the other a picture of Slash and Izzy) one is worse than the other in terms of quality. I can't remember which one, but it's not really needed anyway if you get the 'Sessions' boot.

On to 'The Hell Revisited'. A lot of the material is available elsewhere, so these are the only songs which I took from this boot:

The 4 Hollywood Rose tracks at the beginning, 'Out Ta Get Me', 'Anything Goes (alt. lyrics)' (which I believe is Hollywood Rose as well), both 'Rocket Queen's, 'Move To The City (acoustic)' and both 'Instrumental Demo's.

The acoustic MTTC sounds better on this boot than it does on the 'Rumbo Tapes'. Also, the track 'Rocket Queen (6:13)' is the same one found on the 'Sessions' except for an extra bit of guitar at the beginning. The acoustic 'November Rain' on 'The Hell Revisited' has an extra couple of seconds where you can hear someone say 'Go/Let's Go' if you're desperate to hear everything. The track 'Crash Diet' is available in two versions. Basically, one has an extra guitar intro which the other doesn't. To me, they sound the same, so just stick with the long version which is available on the 'Rumbo Tapes' and you've got both.

So.... here's what you need (in my opinion) - The songs from 'The Hell Revisited' mentioned above, these songs from the 2cd 'Sessions' boot:
CD1

1. Jumpin' Jack Flash       available in better quality on the 'Jumpin' Ax Flash' cd
2. You're Crazy        available in better quality on the 'Jumpin' Ax Flash' cd
3. Reckless Life       available in better quality on the 'Jumpin' Ax Flash' cd
4. Heartbreak Hotel       available in better quality on the 'Jumpin' Ax Flash' cd
5. Shadow Of Your Love        available in better quality on the 'Jumpin' Ax Flash' cd
6. Welcome To The Jungle        available in better quality on the 'Jumpin' Ax Flash' cd
7. Move To The City        available in better quality on the 'Jumpin' Ax Flash' cd
8. Mama Kin        available in better quality on the 'Jumpin' Ax Flash' cd
9. Mama Kin
10. Heartbreak Hotel
11. Ain't Goin' Down
12. Jumpin' Jack Flash
13. Jumpin' Jack Flash
14. West Coast Junkie       cancelled out by the acoustic MTTC on 'The Hell Revisited'
15. November Rain

CD 2

1. Rocket Queen       if you're using the one from 'The Hell Revisited'
2. Night Train
3. My Michelle
4. You're Crazy
5. Paradise City
6. Move To The City
7. November Rain
8. Shadow Of Your Love       a better version can be found on the Live And Let Die single
9. Reckless Life
10. Think About You
11. Welcome To The Jungle
12. Don't Cry
13. Nice Boys
14. Back Off Bitch
15. Anything Goes

These songs from the 'Rumbo Tapes':

1. The Garden
2. Don't Cry       a better sounding version can be found on the Don't Cry single/promo
3. Yesterdays
4. Sentimental Movie
5. Bad Obsession
6. Crash Diet
7. Anything Goes       again, I think this one is from Hollywood Rose
8. Bring It Back Home
9. Back Off Bitch
10. Ain't Goin' Down [instrumental]
11. Move To The City [acoustic]
12. Too Much Too Soon
13. Just Another Sunday
14. Welcome To The Jungle

the 'Cornshucker' cd from Niven and the 'Jumpin' Ax Flash' cd which is also from Alan Niven. Also worth having is the 'Under My Heal' cd which is again, sourced from Alan Niven. I haven't compared the version of 'Mr Brownstone' on this cd with the one on Appetite but for curiosity's sake it's worth having. Also worth having is 'Salt Of The Earth' which Axl and Izzy played with the Rolling Stones, and 'Under My Wheels', which is the studio version that also appeared on the soundtrack to 'The Decline Of Western Civilization Part 2: The Metal Years'. You can find the song on itunes now, albeit with Gene Simmon's voice present before the song starts, so if you're not a fan of Gene, I suggest you stick with the version on the 'Under My Heal' cd.

Other songs that are needed from the Metal Petals compilation:

- Nightrain [Alt. Intro]
- Sweet Child O' Mine
- Mr. Brownstone

I haven't got the version of 'Nice Boys' which appears on the 'American '80s Hair Metal' compilation (listed as 'Re-Recorded' and attributed to Axl Rose, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin, Slash & Steven Adler  :hihi:) but it sounds interesting enough to buy.

Whew! I haven't got around to sorting through the UYI stuff yet but once I have, I'll post what I found. Also, I hope to get some sort of identification sorted for each version of the demos, like the one which starts with Axl saying 'Ready' and stuff like that.

Right, as for the UYI era demos you need the following:

'Axl's Advance Copy':

01. Ain't Going Down
02. Get In The Ring
03. Dust N' Bones
04. Bad Obsession
05. Back Off Bitch
06. Double Talkin' Jive
07. November Rain
08. The Garden
09. Garden Of Eden
10. Don't Damn Me
11. Bad Apples
12. Dead Horse
13. Coma
14. Civil War

The rehearsals from 'Mates Rehearsals' - I think there are only 5 tracks from this session but I've seen two versions of 'Civil War' included in some zip files (1 has vocals from Axl so it can't be from that session surely?) and the two tapes from Alan Niven, the (mainly) instrumental 'GNR Ruffs w/ New Slash GTR's 09/21/90' and the 'Normal & Q-Sound Mixes 01/18/91' tape.

Now, someone seems to have bunged all the tracks from 'Axl's Advance Copy' and 'Mates Rehearsals' onto one compilation with two takes of 'Civil War' and called it 'Use Your Illusion Outtakes'.

*Civil War (Studio Take #1) 7:13 - backing track w/ Axl's vocals, but no sound effects or overdubs
*Civil War (Instrumental) 7:17 - instrumental backing track used on vocal takes

^Where did these two takes of 'Civil War' come from?

and what about this one > *Civil War (Studio Take #2) 1:56 - Axl vocal take, backing track cuts out at 1:45?

I have everything else in FLAC but I haven't been able to find these:

*Civil War (Studio Take #1) 7:13 - backing track w/ Axl's vocals, but no sound effects or overdubs
*Civil War (Studio Take #2) 1:56 - Axl vocal take, backing track cuts out at 1:45
*Civil War (Instrumental) 7:17 - instrumental backing track used on vocal takes

from the Metal Petals compilation:

*Nightrain [Alt. Intro]
*Sweet Child O' Mine
*Mr. Brownstone

I'd really appreciate it if someone would be kind enough to upload these for me  ;D
