Title: How do they decide who plays what?
Post by: LIGuns on January 25, 2009, 09:47:14 AM
I wonder how they decide who plays what guitar parts. Don't you think intros to SCOM, or WTTJ would be desirable for B-Foot, Robin, Fortus, B-Head etc.
If I remember correctly Bucket played them live 2000-2001, clearly because he was superior to Tobias/Huge.
As for 2006 I believe Robin played them, probably because of seniority over B-Foot.

Robin did in 2002 too. about 2000-2001 as robin was also in so maybe you aren't remembering correctly.

I thin BBF mentioned it in one of the interviews that they just talk and decide who wish to play what ... and then they play it.

It would be cool to see Fortus get a chance to play the lead on one of the songs, just because I haven't seen much of that yet.

You Could Be Mine?

Madagascar?

November Rain?

Just to name a few.

Cool man, thanks for the info.  I guess I just assumed that Finck played the November Rain stuff, and the other two I wouldn't really call "signature" guitar parts like Sweet Child or Welcome to the Jungle.  Glad to hear that he did some lead, though.

You wouldn't call scom or wttj signature guitar parts?

Really?

I think he was saying he wouldn't call the guitar parts in Madagascar and You Could Be Mine signature, as opposed to WTTJ and SCOM.

I think the more interesting question (for me at least) is how did they decide who got to get a crack at each solo on CD?  Seems like there was an honest effort to give everyone an equal amount of solos during the album.  With that said; Bumbefoot was included a lot more than I anticipated, while I was surprised Fortus didn't get a single solo (from what I remember at least).

For example: Did Axl let every guitarist have a crack at the TIL solo or was it always Robin?  I would love to hear what Buckethead could have done given that amount of time and space to lay down a solo of that magnitude.

Yeah, sorry if I wasn't clear before.  I meant that I didn't necessarily think "You Could Be Mine" or "Madagascar" had trademark lead guitar parts.  I think anyone here would agree that Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child have some of the most memorable lead parts of any rock songs ever.

I think that, with Finck's style, he was a natural choice for the solo in This I Love.  I'm sure Buckethead or Bumblefoot would have played something cool, but I'd argue that their solos might not have had the feel Axl was looking for in that song.  Who knows, though?  It would be fun to hear, the other guys' attempts, that's for sure.

Maybe Axl ask them to play, parts in which he feels fits the song itself.

No way to know for sure, at least until the story is hopefully told someday, but I'd bet after all this time that each one took a try at just about everything, and what they deemed the best was kept...

maybe before each concert - the guitarists play twister to see who takes lead on which song - and Axl spins the arrow and calls out ....   :hihi:

Finck obviously has the bluesy/Slash style so songs like Sweet child that have a lot of feeling would go to him. Songs

like the outro to Nightrain or the outro to Paradise City work well with some shredding so Bucket/Bumble get those

parts. Most of the old solos are covered by Finck cos of his style only the odd bit here and there would suit Bumblefoot,

however when they tour the new songs Bumblefoot should have plenty if you consider all his and Bucketheads parts

on the album.

It seems like Richard gets overlooked.

For example, he plays the last solo at the end of Street Of Dreams....

But on the booklet it says it?s played by Bucket. It seems that Fortus plays it only live, isn?t it?

Good point jarmo . In fact when i joined up i was hoping to ask Dexter if Fortus appears more on future albums, as

when i saw them a few times during 2006 tour he stood out for me as the coolest most rocknroll of the new guys

even more impresive is the solo he inherited from bucket in "madagascar." buckets solo is the best, but richard does a hell of a job.....

He also does Izzy's solo on Nightrain, which he does rather well imho.

No worries.

i think axl decides because he's really the top dog in gnr.  i bet he gets them to audition each solo for him, and he gets to decide who played it the best.  but i hope that doesn't cause any tension in the band between the guitarists.  because they'd probably work very hard to impress axl, and it might be discouraging to come in second or third.

but ultimately i think bbf will get most the solos because he's the most technically amazing player in the band.  he can play extremely fast and do sweeps and tapping, which the other guys can't do.  it just makes sense that bbf would be the go-to man.
