I am trying to understand what EMO means. please explain. thankyou.

It's kind of like a guy who asks for an officer to give him a police escort just so he can propose to his girlfriend.

Emo is supposed to mean "emotional rock". But thats stupid because all music has a form of emotion in it. Emo really defines a certain genre and movement.

Much like its easy to tell a glam influenced band by the clothes they wear.

Its piss easy to tell if a band is emo by their image, and most of them have a distinct vocal style, they all sound the same. Whiney pussyified voice.

A few years later the scene, much like the crappy indie scene may i add, is cluttered with alot of bands emulating the genre but in a more pop orientated way. Pretty boys making dumb ass music.

I hate the whole genre with a passion. I have yet to have heard one emo band remotely good in anyway. I absolutely loathe it.

Nah, emo is some kind of..... culture? I guess that's what you'd call it. It usually involves those god-awful fringes that cover up the eyes, or at least one of them. The word 'emo', much like the n-word, has sort of gone from being a derogatory word to some sort of identity used by the individual(s) in question. If you read the Daily Mail, all emos are depressed suicidal weirdos. This of course is completely wrong. Only some of them are.

MCR isnt emo.  Dashboard Confessional is.

Men trying to find their fem side and vice versa.  Depressed but not?  Who the hell knows?  Many Goth kids are into emo around here.

not at all...they are what people who dont know anything about emo characterize as the "epitome" of emo...much like people called Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots "grunge" bands... a broad generalization...Dashboard Confessional and Mayday Parade are emo, MCR, A.F.I and bands like that arent...

So does that make me EMO because I ADORE TWILIGHT!. But I am over 30.

ugh yes they are. Just listen to the music, the lyrics, the voice. Then look at the various images they have had. Just because Gerard Way suddenly says they are not emo to try get more fans doesnt mean the band are not emo.

MCR and Dashboard Confessional sound NOTHING alike...DC is emo

I know they dont sound the same. But the emo sound typically derives from MCR. Whos more well known. MCR or Dashboard? Who is more successful, MCR or Dashboard?
MCR, so all the little copy cat money machine emo bands are gonna take influence from MCR.

I don't think you are emo, but you might fall under some of the sub-categories, what with your love of Hello Kitty and having a dragon on your lawn.

emo was around before MCR, it got sodomised and turned into a dirty word by the likes of MCR.

and now it's becoming unpopular the likes of MCR are denying ever being emo.

Nobody has called me EMO, but they have called TWILIGHT, EMO, and I just wanted to understand. And I am One of a kind! I get along with everyone, but fit in with no one.

I was also curious about EMO because somebody at mygnr said that their friends who were not diehard GNR fans thought THIS I LOVE was EMO. Alot of my conservative friends think I am strange for loving AXL Rose and GNR.

I think someone singing about heartbreak is not emo.

Its all about the fashion n music style, the weak ass fag lyrics just add to it.

Dashboard is a really good band, some awesome tunes.  I think they're considered the godfathers of emo, but that term really doesn't do them justice.  As someone else said, emo nowadays is more about the MCR/fall out boy image with the stupid hair cut and make up.

Plus, don't listen to anything that comes out of mygnr.  They'll use imaginary friends to put down Axl and Guns.  I hardly think TIL and Estranged are emo.  Just fucking great songs that capture the human spirit.

do a search for "godfather emo dashboard" and see what you find. 

i always thought the cure were a 80s goth band. Similar to The Cult, except without the balls.

Not all their music, but quite a few of there songs could be classified as "emo."

Not to mention pretty much every modern emo band has hijacked Robert Smith's image.


They have a few Goth albums, all light-years ahead of The Cult.

Whenever I hear of emo I always recall and laugh at this joke:

'You should look into buying emo grass, I hear it cuts itself.'

Thankyou to everyone for their replies. It seems EMO means emotional and that it started in the 80's. I did some research on the internet.  It was described as white boy pain.

^but that emo in the 80s. is ALOT different from the emo in the 00s.
