Post by: italysfinest1985 on January 07, 2009, 10:35:55 AM
Catcher in the Rye.
This I Love.
Street of Dreams.
Prostitute.

A hard choice for me...but I think Catcher in the Rye by a hair.

Im not sure about beauty....but

I adore prostitite.....though id like  the lyrics/vocals a little less produced/clear.....so you can understand the lyrics in parts ( yeh whinge whinge :)

The outro is awesome though, right up there with the outro from locomotive

I'm suprirsed so many people like This I Love... musically it's really nice, but goddamn the lyrics are cringe-worthy.

Prostitute gets my vote, by far.

Depends

If I were saying what is the most beautiful lyrically only, Im going with SOD or Catcher

If we are talking overall, TIL musically, emotionally and just atmospherically, is the most beautiful.

I'm not so keen on the vocal/lyrical part of TIL, though the music is nice. Basically what the bucket said a few posts back. :P

And I'm not sure I'd consider TWAT a ballad. :-\ Great song, but can you call it a ballad? Perhaps I have a narrow definititon of what a 'ballad' is...

I love Prostitute (not prostitutes, you pervs!).

Seriously, it is so incredible. The emotion, the music, how it integrates the orchestra and rock together so seemlessly. How it starts small, works up to a climax and then tapers off back into silence at the end ... the perfect way to end the album. I listened to it like 20 times the other night. I couldn't get it out of my head. I've never been a huge fan of Don't Cry or November Rain, or even Street of Dreams, or hell, even Sweet Child of Mine, (although Estranged was one of my favorites off UYI) but this is different type of ballad for GNR. Completely new ground. This is the song, more than any other, that makes me think that CD was worth the wait. It's Earth shattering, yet humble. Sonically complex, while built around a simple tune. It's lyrically aggressive, yet it shows that Axl is knows he's made mistakes along the way just like anyone else.

Without a doubt, it's my favorite song on CD, and possibly my favorite GNR song of all time. It just speaks to me in a way so few songs ever have.

I'd classify it as a rock ballad.

A very good point in itself. It's hard to favor one over the other. But something about Catcher brings a tear to my eye every time.  :smoking:

Semi ballads: TWAT and Prostitute

Yeah, they are kinda like semi-ballads... Which is why I usually don't like to use the word 'ballad' when it comes to rock music (with the exception of Bon Jovi). That word makes me think of something really sappy and even This I Love doesn't fit in that category.. IMO.

Overall I find The Blues to be the best ballad/semi-ballad/whatever you wanna call it that GNR has ever written.

"This I Love" is the most "beautiful" IMHO.

That said... it's neck and neck between "This I Love" and "Prostitute" for best ballad... and overall song on the album for me. Those two tracks are absolutely amazing and well worth the wait. I cringe when I think of all the close-minded ex-GN'R fans and rock fans out there who won't give this album a fair hear b/c of the line-up. Someday they'll hear these two tracks and be like... "What the fuck was I thinking!??!". :smoking:

It doesn't seem to be a popular choice in this thread, but I have to say "Street of Dreams".  I just love the lyrics, the piano, just the flow of the entire song.  Every ballad on this album is awesome though.

This I Love is a beautiful song, with great emotion and addictive piano playing

My only issue , if I have one, is the opening lyrics - it just seems so "below" what should be accompanying this type of song..but I would'nt presume to completely understand them either, despite them appearing simple

Which is my problem with it, it's too simple... esp. given that Axl has been apparently working on it for years.

Like jarmo, I like different things about different songs for different reasons.   Its hard to pick, but right now if I was forced to choose, it would be This I Love.

What about Sorry? Isn't that a ballad?
I am not sure that TWAT or Catcher are ballads, at least in my book.

(n); Typically characterized by having a slow tempo, long voiced notes, electric and/or acoustic guitars, and deemphasized percussion and bass. Some sections of the song may include strong percussion and bass that are more typical of the hard rock and heavy metal genres for increased emotional effect, and often the electric guitar comes back in the song's climax.

 :hihi:

Catcher defined.

I dont really consider Madagascar a ballad. I personally would only consider releasing SOD,TIL, and ITW out of the bunch

This I Love is the best ballad on the album. Cant wait to see the response when it hits radio.

If I were GNR I would release this over The Blues because its a very to the point type song. With CD and Better there is a lot going on. This I love strips everything down. Although I do like Street of Dreams I think This I Love will get more of a response plus its the riskier choice. SOD is too safe.

I think the remaining singles should be Scraped,If The World or Sorry, and This I Love...in whatever order.

To me, This I Love is the most impressive song GNR has ever done from a strictly instumental standpoint.  It's not my favorite GnR song ever, but musically there are no mainstream rock bands/singers aside from Freddie/Queen I could even imagine composing something like that

This i Love - ive been through a ton of bad relationships in my life, and most recently have been cheated on but deep down i still have feelings for her, this song speaks the most to me on the album, i relate alot to the song and it made me honestly cry when i first heard it.

I'm going to have to say This I Love is my favorite ballad at this time.

I can't usually can't just listen to an album from start to finish without doing anything else.  If I'm not multi-tasking, I have a tendancy to zone out and get sleepy :hihi:  The first time I listened to this album, I did it without doing any thing else.  I didn't want to have an association with something when listening to these songs later on (confusing, I know, but it makes sense to me  :smoking: )

By the time I got to track 13, I was on my way to zoning out.  I was tired and thinking of taking a break before listening to the rest of it.  When This I Love started in, it just blew my mind and reinvigorated me.  The passion in it just blew me the fuck away.

If only for that shock, it's still my favorite ;D  I can't say it's my overall favorite song on the CD, I really don't HAVE a favorite, I love them all.  But in the ballad category, this one is tops in my mind.
