ROBERT PLANT, FREDDIE MERCURY, AXL ROSE, IAN GILLAN Among 'Greatest Voices in Rock' - Jan. 2, 2009

According to U.K.'s Daily Mail, LED ZEPPELIN's Robert Plant has topped a poll of the greatest voices in rock organized by digital radio station Planet Rock. QUEEN's Freddie Mercury came second, Paul Rodgers of FREE came next while THE WHO frontman Roger Daltrey came fifth.

The only female voice on the list was that of Janis Joplin.

"The Greatest Voice in Rock Top 40" was compiled by the station's DJs, presenters and listeners, plus musicians, rock critics and experts such as Tony Iommi from BLACK SABBATH, Phil Manzanera from ROXY MUSIC and Ian Anderson from YES.

Cool list.  I don't think Coverdale should be that high up, but he does have a great voice.

 not a bad spot, but I would've chosen a different list.

Hetfield should be higher.

Axl should be top 5 over Daltrey and Coverdale and maybe even the Deep Purple guy

Axl's not in bad company there in the Top 10....

All the people ahead of him are from a different generation.

So Axl's obviously the best of his generation....  8)

I agree with most, though definately not in that order...but I have one glaring exclusion: Neil Young.  Neil Young can't f---ing sing.  Sorry.  Neil, you are nice guy and all, but keep playing with your toy trains.  Everyone else on that list has some talent.  :no:

I personally would've put Phil Lynott, Steve Perry & Geddy Lee higher but can't complain.

i cant take that list seriously when Eddie Vedder aint on there, fair enough if you dont like his music [though i think its great] but he can sing like an angel. Ever seen there MTV unplugged. Good for Axl though

IMO Seb ruins Gn'R songs when he sings with Axl, I know he's mates and all that but a great singer 'e ain't.

Sorry but Neil Young is a god in many ways, great voice ( that you either LOVE or HATE ) but you gotta admit its unique. Not to mention he's a guitar god! Neil should be #1  : ok:

Ian Astbury could be in the top 40... and I think Steve Perry should be higher up.  Not really a Journey fan, but that guy can sing.

I agree. They even put Cornell on there, but left out Eddie. And Bon Jovi's voice isn't exactly special, either.

He had a very good voice back in the days. His songs are very hard to sing.

As for that list, I respect every single one of those singers but it's not too close to my personal favorites.

Gotta have Joey Ramone on that list.  I would have had Axl higher (OK, #1), but like Jarmo said it's quite a feat to be considered best of your generation.

It's a British classic rock station, I doubt they ever play PJ, apart from maybe one or two predictable hits from Ten.  I think the list is ok considering the station's audience.  And they voted Axl ahead of Bruce - considering it's a British poll you have to say that's impressive!

Daltrey at his peak should be higher if anything. The guy had power, range, was a great harmoniser and had no annoying vocal tics, plus if anything he was better live than in the studio. Who Sell Out, then Live At Leeds and Who's Next show all the facets of the guy. Totally under-rated, if anything.

Coverdale higher than Joplin and Morrison???

Joplin should be number one ahead of everyone... she WAS rock n' fuckin' roll. Then I would probably put Axl at #2. Janis never gets the respect she deserves these days.
