Here Today... Gone To Hell!

i have some older friends who grew up with gnr back in the mullet-head days.  they make fun of me all the time for supporting the new band and believing in this amazing, beautiful new music.  they can only understand simple blues rock and think it's still 1988.  so they tease me all the time.  it's actually gotten worse since the album came out.  i want it to stop, but they just keep at it, hammering me on the same old things over and over again.

outside of gnr, we're great friends and have fun together.  i'm always dependable about giving people rides, and i'm happy to let people borrow money if they need it.  but i've honestly had just about enough of the bullshit picking on gnr and chinese democracy. 

so is it okay to break up with friends over a band?  it seems silly and all, but really it's deeper than that.  to me, they seem like the major problem with society -- people who refuse to move on from the past and try to judge a book by its cover.  i don't know... maybe i'll calm down later, but lately i'm asking myself, 'why be friends with people who make fun of great music?'

If I were only friends with people who liked the new band over the old band I would only have 1 or 2 friends...I have been hearing the "Chinese Democracy" taunts for the past decade...it is what it is...most friends I have like "Chinese Democracy" or at least think its o.k, but they still prefer the old stuff hands down...you have to give it time...this album has been out for 1 month...the old stuff has had 20 years to grow on people..I wouldnt write any friends off over it....The bottom line is I have been telling all my friends about how great the next GNR album was going to be and I was right...that is all that matters... : ok:

No, people can like or dislike whatever they want.    I have friends who don't listen to any rock music at all.

I used to make music with a friend who used to piss me off by saying GNR (but axl especially) sucked and how axl had the most annoying voice ever.
He knew I love gnr's music and used it to hurt my lil feelings :hihi: :rant:

Needless to say I dont make music with him anymore and ever since I left ze motherland I hardly ever speak to him.

Of course it wasnt all because of GNR. He started behaving like a pretentious prick and the music he made suffered because of it.

most of my asshole friends always do that but its not all the time like yours i'm guessing just make fun of them for something else like if they're fat or ugly or something. if you counter their shit with something else thats better they'll hush quick.

when i'm with my friends they like to listen to rap so i just try to mimick what ever rap song in playing and most of the time i just get threaten a punch in the face and thats it.

Personal time. We, my wife and I, had really good friends who we did lots of things together. I was the best man at their wedding, my wife was the main bridesmaid (Matron of honor I think its called). Hung out almost every weekend. My kids even called them like Aunt _____. They were our best friends. I hope that paints the correct image. Actually they were pretty much our only real friends.

We just had a big falling out over politics no less, last October. We were, and continue to be, big Barack Obama fans. Donated to his campaign, worked for him making calls to swing states. Seriously hardcore fans. Our "friends" talked some shit about Barack. They talked shit and were voting for McCain and Palin. It got crazy. They were over one day when my parents were over. My mom is a big Barack supporter as well, and they went at it. The next day I wrote them a letter expressing my sentiments, and that led us to "stop being friends" even to this day. Years of a friendship just crashed and burned. My wife still feels awful about the whole fucking thing. I am still bitter and my "I don't give a fuck" defense mechanism is in full gear.

So, I don't know. I guess this topic isn't that crazy. At least not to me who is going through something similar. What a bitch.

Back in the day I was driving a friend home and a GNR song came on the radio.  He started making fun of them so I stopped the car and had him get out and walk.  We were both joking, sort of, he only had to walk a couple of minutes as we had already made it to his street, though he didn't get curbside service.

Well, if it bothers you to the point where it puts your friendship in doubt, then let them know how it makes you feel when they keep at it. If they respect you as a friend, they will stop making fun of you. If they don't, then they obviously are making fun of you and not GN'R, and then I would think twice before hanging out with them again.

My college buddies have ALWAYS busted my chops about Guns N' Roses.  My friends will say that "Axl sucks" or "I'm blinded by my love of Axl" when I posted my review of CD. I don't care what they think. It's something not worth fighting over since at the end of the day we all support each other.

  I read on this thread how someone supported Obama and got into an argument with his friend. I think politics is different from music since there is far less implications and beliefs involved. I'm a moderate Democrat who supported Obama. A friend of mine is completely opposite of me.  He and I don't talk about politics anymore since we have gotten into heated debates. We both agreed that it's just not worth jepordising  our friendship.

 

For goodness sake... however good they are Guns N' Roses is just a band!  Chinese Democracy is a great album, but remember - it's just an album!  Some people take this far too seriously.

Sounds like they're always asking for rides and money.  For that alone I would question their loyalty.

That was my post. We agreed at one point to never discuss politics. BUt it was like walking on fucking eggshells. When my mom was over and she got into it with said friends shit just blew up. What kind of friendship is it where you have topics that have to be avoided for the sake of that friendship. I mean if the shit didn't hit the fan and we kept to this fucking never discuss politics mandate. One day we would be bound to be hanging flipping channels or something and Barack would be on, and then what? I can't live like that. I can't be walking on eggshells for no one. Maybe its just easy for me to say that because we really don't have friends. I know that is pretty much my fault and I have to live with that. I've had to deal with this situation as well... ultimately all you should care about is that you love the music and enjoy it, if someone else doesn't then it's their loss.  I've said it before... as far as I'm concerned GNR released ChiDem just for me !

No, I just point out how even if it's not their cup of tea, there are objective ways that GNR is better than the bands they love (Axl's vocal abilities and range, the talent of the musicians, better/longer concerts, etc) and usually the argument ends there

In high school, i drove a purple car with a Prince symbol painted on the hood, so yeah, i am pretty use to my friend's making fun of my favorite bands.

My best friends tend to be much, MUCH more conservative than I am - we basically have an unwritten rule to not discuss abortion, and in some instances, religion.  It's worked pretty well so far.

Fuck. No fucking way. Did you read my previous posts? How can this work out? It is obviously beyond me. To me, a real friendship is when you can just be yourself and not have to walk on eggshells. There should be no topics off limits. Dude a really really strong friendship was killed over fucking politics. It is something that will inevitably come up. Barack is on TV all the time and I would feel their eyes. But fucking Jesus, I am agnostic. I don't think it would be possible for me to be good friends with someone who wanted to make abortion illegal, and were bible humpers.

I think maybe my idea of a friendship is just different from the rest of you. I don't make friends easy and I only had one really long time friendship that was killed over ultimately the final straw being his shit talking of (like I mentioned earlier) Super Mario Galaxy. Hey sport... can you even name who is in GnR right now?  its not a band.. i don't get why idiots get so defensive about it.  the CD is great.  Axl did a great job and i hope he makes many more albums just like it.  i also would love to see the original band play live once in my lifetime.. i don't understand why people get so pissed about this.  its not like i'm saying the cd is terrible or axl sucks/slash rules.. or anything like that.   i read axl's homework and thought it was ridiculous.  he basically says that he feels he is solely entitled to profit from the GnR name.  that name would be worthless if it wasn't for AFD.  there is no reason why he should be 100% entitled in my opinion.. but on the other hand i couldn't give a shit.. because neither axl, slash ect.. is ever going to give me a penny of it.. and i would never buy or not buy a good album based on the name or who financially gains from my purchase.

it is silly and no its not deeper than that. people are entitled to their own taste and just because they like music from past decades, that doesn't make them "people who refuse to move from the past" or "a major problem with society".

however, from what i can read between the lines, the relationship you have with these friends seems superficial and a bit immature. i don't think your friends mean a lot to you since you are considering breaking a friendship over something so trivial like a band. on the other hand, since you are so sensitive on this subject, your friends should have respected that and quit teasing you around.

On a side note, I agree that in a true friendship no subject should be "off-limits". I have argued with my friends extensively over hundreds of different issues, ranging from sociological, supernatural and political issues to stuff like sports, music, games etc. we argue and sometimes tease each other to death but no topic is "off-limits".

No, I would not stop talking to a friend of mine because they did not like GN'R.  I have alot of friends that don't like GN'R.  Everyone has a right to their opinion.  I do like GN'R.

yes, i did read your posts (and the super mario part made me laugh pretty hard  :hihi:).  A real friendship is built around respect and trust.  I respect my friends for their different opinions, even if they drastically differ from my own. We aren't friends BECAUSE of our views on abortion or religion, so why should I really care what they think about those things.  As crazy as you think they are for their opinions, they probably think the same about you - two sides to every coin you know?

imo, you should be able to have good fights with good friends, and when you're both wiped out from arguing, you take it easy and have a drink together and talk about something completely different to put things in perspective.

Look. I know I am a little fucked. I can't argue that but, here is the deal. Say you had a really good friend who was gay alright. And they were going to vote for McCain/Palin, that wouldn't give you not only great pause, but a great big WTF moment? I am talking Palin who on video attended a church that asked everyone to "Pray the gay away." Personally that is beyond masochistic. Voting for someone who wished you either didn't exist at all, or could pray it all away. I struggled with understanding how my gay friends could even think about doing this. I straight up wanted an answer because I didn't understand, and they never explained or educated us as to why. I still don't quite get it. My letter was stated in a way they could have just explained it. We are so very un-PC, and talk so openly about almost everything. But for them to talk shit about Barack and vote for, who I perceive as a maniac (Palin) especially when they are gay, warranted the need to explain. I am very sensitive regarding gay bashing and I am not even gay. You know fuckheads who say "My best friends are gay." Well, mine were.

One of my friends who is an ACDC fan said he liked the album and that it was better than black Ice. Also, Im almost certain he thinks its the original band.

I gave copies of CD to two people that I've known for a very very very long time.

One of them really like it and his 15 year old daughter LOVED it and he tracked me down to tell me.  :D

When I bumped into the other guy and asked him how he liked it, he sorta hesitated ... so I just said to him something like that it's okay if it's not the type of music he likes.  We all have different tastes in music.  I just wanted to know what he really thought of it.  Then he said he didn't like it but he knew how much I did so he didn't want to say anything negative that might hurt my feelings.

I thought that was nice reactions by both of them.  One sharing my enjoyment and the other not wanting to spoil my enjoyment.  :)

holy shit, that did not go well.  once again, my two best friends starting ganging up on me and making fun of chinese democracy.  so i finally snapped and yelled at them and let them have it.  i mean i REALLY let them have it... i said some things that my parents would probably be horified to hear me say!   ;)  some things were probably more hurtful than they needed to be, like when i made fun of my one friend for being fat and the other guy for having a learning disability taht made it impossible for him to go to school with the rest of us. 

well now they're pissed off at me and say that i've turned into an asshole.  yeah right.  i sat quietly for years and took there shit.  now when i dished it too they get all offended.  so now it's probably impossible for us to hang out any more because things just aren't going to be the same.  which sucks because we have known each other since we were kids.

i don't like to fight, but i was seriously considering it.  i was shaking and my face was red.  if i was a girl i probably would have cried even.  that whole time i we were yelling at each other, i just kept thinking of shackler and what he would do in that situation.  if i was the kind of guy who liked to fight or hurt people, they would have definitely been in some trouble.

but who the fuck cares?  they aren't real friends anyways and i still have chinese democracy, which is the greatest album ever.  and i know that they'll come crawling back just as soon as the video for better is released and axl does publicity and the album becomes a major hit.  then they'll feel like the fucking assholes that they are and they will ask for an apology. 

now the quesiton is more complicated... should i forgive them when they come crawling back and apologize?  i am a christian and jesus teaches forgiveness, but i am also a fan of axl and he says fuck that.  when people betray you and try to hurt you, i really think you should just cut them out of your life like a cancer.  but i should prepare for that situation becuase i know they will be forced to eat there words the second chinese democracy becomes a hit and everyone else at school loves it.

I wouldn't take it so personally.  I'm sure your friends are passionate about bands, books, games, etc. that you could care less about.  I don't think that's worth ending any friendship over.  And if it is, was it really woth having that friendship in the first place?

I'm a New England Patriot fan and watched the Super Bowl last year with ALL Giant fans.  I was outnumbered like 15-1, and we all know how that worked out.  A few of them got in my face in celebration at the end.  Did I like that?  No.  Did I talk to them for the next couple days?  No.  But when I was able to crawl out of my hole and face the light again I wasn't about to denounce my friendship with all of them because of anything that had happened.

I probaly wouldn't of mad fun of their weight or disablities, but maybe some type of hobbie or other music, video games, ect that they like.  It's not worth fighting over a Gnr CD.   PEACE and Happy new year.

Probably not, cuz I wouldn't have any friends left :no:.  As we have all realized, not everyone listens to or has an ear for just one kind of music so i don't expect them to share my passion, but those who are closest to me, and may not feel the same are always well mannered in regards to a listen or a conversation, I'm good with that.

I have had this all my life and you have to realise some people don't share your passion. A friend of mine who is more like a brother said to me that he felt"every negative review of CD was like a personal insult to me". He is still my friend! We argued endlessly whilst I to proved that Axl and Dizzy played regulary and Izzy played every so often. This really pissed him off as he was a fan back in the day and still loves illusions GNR. My advice is to relax and enjoy the fact your friends don't necessarilly love everything you do. Otherwise the world would be a boring place.

Your obsession with Axl seems to be a replacement for other issues in your life which may be lacking, you might even feel it's all you have, thus when it gets attacked, you lash out in order to protect what you feel you NEED. This, or any album, is not worth the degredation of your character to attack someone's learning disabilities. You call your self a christian in order to guage what your reaction should be when THEY come crawling back to YOU; I now enough about christianity and jesus' teachings to know that attacking people's disabilities would not be a hallmark of Jesus' life (his turn the other cheek parables) and that attaching onesself to a figure you have no real connection with (Axl) is in contradiction to the commandment about false idols and Jesus' saying "i am the way, the truth and the light". You have some very serious worship issues regarding Axl if you would lash out at criticism of him. This is what religious fanatics do.

in all seriousness, talk to someone trained in psychology. Your obsession with Axl is the sign of something deeper which troubles you, which you may not even be aware of. You're even in denial about GnR/ CD itself in order to validate your obsession.

it isn't catching on
Better will not be the SCOM which makes this album move millions
Axl is 46; he doesnt have the sex appeal (hell, Brad Pitt doesnt even at 46) to become an icon amongst teens

but the most important thing is you like the album, and the album came out. In the end, it doesnt matter whether your friends like it, it shouldnt matter to you whether it sells huge. But it does matter to you because you feel the need to validate your attachment to Axl, because, i fear, you cling to it in order to fill a void. It isnt Axl job to fill whatever may be missing, it isnt your friends' job to participate in the promotion of the album nor is it incumbent upon them to like it. It IS incumbent upon you to understand that not everyone is going to like the album based solely on the music, and that some wont like it based on Axl's behavior in the last 15 years. You need to be aware of that and realize that actions have consequences, both for Axl and yourself.

You need to apologize to your friends first and foremost. Nothing so trivial should make you react to them that way, especially stooping to comment on someone's disability. That is inexcusable and to start, you need to address that both to him and within your own soul and consciousness.

... What the hell? They rib you, you rib them back. Everyone likes something that you're guaranteed to think sucks. At least, that's how it is for me and vice versa. I don't actually take offense to the comments made about Axl or GNR, but if I can defend it, I will. If I can't, I go, "Wait a second... didn't you actually go see Mamma Mia in theaters? Yeah, why don't you sit on down there" or something along those lines, depending on the friend in question and their interests.

look man, i can't believe i am having to defend my fandom on a supposed fan site, but whatever.  the things they said wen WAY beyond ribbing. they were constantly making fun of axl, which okay i get it.  but they also made fun of the music.  and we know there's no wway someone could make fun of music this amazingly beautiful and touching unless they're just trying to be a hater who tears axl down.

they said very ugly, hurtful things.  and not just once, but over and over to the point that it would make me not want to talk to them.  the things they said were so bashing that they would have been banned from this forum in a SECOND!  so if saying that stuff gets you banned from the forum, why shouldn't it get you banned from my life?  life is too short to waste it on negative asshole hater fuckheads who only see the worst in situations and try to spread there misery around. 

if you guys are going to try and make fun of me,  A FAN, for defending my favorite band, then why don't you make fun of jarmo or any of the mother mods for defending the band against the same kind of assholes?  you're hipocrites.  and what's worse, you don't even have the honor or decency to defend your friends or people you admire from attacks.  wow... that says volumes about you guys.

for one, it doesnt take much to get banned from this forum.  my friend, who axl rose himself, once  thought was the funniest poster on this forum, got banned for making fun of a particular mod who contstantly swings from axl's nuts.  ironically, this poster is the biggest AXL ROSE fan and GNR fan i have ever known in real life.  we sat around on christmas eve with some guys playing poker and listened to chinese democracy in its entirity on repeat all night, a particular couple people at the party were saying how it wasnt really guns n roses, my friend argued how it's axl's name, axl's band, axl has always been the primary song writer (aside from izzy), etc.  my friend didnt kick him out of his house for having a different view, and eventually, the topic changed to something else.  no big deal.  the point is, it doesnt make you a fan for constantly swinging on axl's nuts and defending his every move without hesitation, it makes you a sheep.  i am gonna guess that axl himself wouldnt respect you anymore for defending his every move, and i'm gonna also guess he doesnt surround himself with a bunch of "yes men", who are just there to tell him how awesome every fucking idea is that comes out of his mouth.  there is a line between being a fan and being a fanatic.  just visit mark david chapman in prison and ask him.

I get in arguments at the bar all the time about music. Last night some fuckhead played decided to play Nickleback (whom I really don't mind that much, but their new single is fucking retarded)  so I went to the jukebox and played the whole Chinese Democracy album :) he said "fuck Guns N' Roses" so I yelled no, fuck YOU, and kept baggin on him till he left. cocksucker.

no, i defend axl rose all the time.  i defend him on taking his time working on his masterpiece.  i defend him keeping his band name, i defend most of everything he's done musically, legally, or otherwise.  i do not, however, belittle someone who has a mental disability because they talk shit about a band.  this goes beyond being a fan, and closer toward being someone who is obsessed, much like mark david chapman was with john lennon.  is that to say you are capable of murder?  of course not.

okay, i apologize for comparing you to mark david chapman.  relax.  the point i meant to convey is that next time, you should think twice before you attack someone's physical or mental handicaps, especially people who you claim as FRIENDS, in defense of a total stranger.  now if it was YOU being mocked and picked on, that is a different situation, but i believe there is a blurred line here, in which you are not seperating guns and roses being attacked, and yourself.  you are taking it as a personal attack.  when someone makes fun of guns n roses or axl to me, my response is more like...
