The intro to Rhiad is not what I expected- trippy industrial type stuff.  : ok:

I like the new intro a lot - also, the new guitar kicks ass imo. The solo is so different, yet so fuckin' cool.

Vocally, I think it's very difficult to sing but Axl nails it : ok:  I didn't particularly care for the live version from 2001, but this  rocks!!

Ronald's solo is like it's from outer space.  Totally off the wall but I love it.  Fits the song

This is one of the best tracks of the album.  I miss hearing Robin and Bucket's solo but Ron's is growing on me.  Bucket's outro sounds like aliens firing lasers, very spacey.

I think besides Chinese Democracy, its the best true rock song on the album. New Guitar solo kicks serious ass!!!!!!

I got a very Sci-Fi feeling from this song.  Done by any other band, it would have been a joke, but GNR pulls it off beautifully.

That's the fretless power, mate!

Bucket's outro sounds like aliens firing lasers, very spacey.
  I kinda thought the same!

Very cool song, indeed. Brain's not a human.

So Ron now does the first solo and Bucket the outro?  What was it on the demo?  Robin solo, Bucket outro?

In the demo, Robin did about 7 seconds of the solo and Bucket did the remaining 18 seconds, and the outro.  Now Ron does all the solo and Bucket does the outro.

The intro makes me feel like I'm all alone on a horror movie space station.

Combined with the wacky solo and the beeping outro, it makes for an odd sci-fi tinged rocker. Space Bedouins?

An example of where the excessive production works. A nondescript track when played live has turned into a more dynamic rocker. Very simple in structure, but there's a place for songs like that on an album.

Is it just me , or is there alot of funk in this song?

and some of the other new tracks too?

Title: Re: Riad N' The Bedouins
Post by: russtcb on November 20, 2008, 08:30:27 AM
Here's another one with an intro I'm not sure about. In a word; unnecessary. The song could easily just kick in with the guitar work and take off. Seems as if the intro bogs it down. When the song does kick it, it's biggest short coming is apparent; the "Ahh Ahh" lyrics. Again they seem unnecessary or at the very least unfinished. The two high points of the song are by far the half time chorus and solo. Those two points are what got stuck in my head and brought me back for repeated listens.
3/5

This is a great song.  People keep calling this the filler song.  Why?  It's a great straight-forward kick ass rocker.  How in the world is that a bad thing?

It reminds me a lot of tracks like OTGM or You're Crazy.  It really embodies a lot of the no holds barred GNR spirit.  Great track.  Axl, thanks for this one!!

I spent most of Thurs. listening to MySpace...jumped in the car, threw the radio on a local station, and about 20 minutes out I realized I was listening to Riad!  The DJ called it Raidin' the bed-oyns...I think it was a college station...thank god for our education system.  That dolt will probably be my boss in 6 months... :hihi:

I am not foaming at the mouth over this song, but as with all GnR, it surpasses anything anybody else is producing.  : ok:

Love this song, although must confess the weird sci-fi intro and the editing once again** are pissing me a bit. Surely they'll grow on me.

Should've never heard the demo. Got used to Robin's solo. That cool little stop on the rythm section in the middle of the solo also had more highlight before. Now it's kinda hidden by Ron. His style sounds strange, but, ok, good.

** It's the 3rd mistake I noticed on CD - minor ones, I know, but that just could not happen on such an historical album - it's on 3:24 when Axl sings "if you had wove - cut and paste - SO WELL". The other editing problems: Ron's slide on Better and Scraped 1:19. Not saying it ruined CD or something like that. CD is near to perfection, those are the ONLY things that just should not be there.

This is not a mistake, he's just phrasing the line differently than earlier in the song.

Man, everybody here knows the mistakes that aren't really mistakes. Here's a crazy thought, maybe they were actually going for what they got. Sounds fucking perfect to me. Good to know everyone that can type can be a critic in this intelligent world. ::)

Sure. Sorry for the word "mistake", re-thinking that was too hard indeed.
But again, that "so well" didn't sound smooth to me for some reason (maybe because of the diference on the demo - that was never meant to be heard, but this downloading motherfucker did anyway), so it seems like a digital cut and paste (which is no shame to talk about cause everyone uses that) that didn't work 100% perfectly, maybe 90%... don't know. Nevermind, I love the song anyway, and that's better than anything from any other band these days.

Black Betty, just showed my opinion, and now I'm even reconsidering part of it. Didn't mean to be critic, intelligent or anything.
Just did what people do on fan message boards: wrote my thoughts, being respectful and supportive to the band and other fans like us. If I sounded pretentious, didn't mean it.

I am loving this song now.

Was what I considered the weakest but damn that song makes me move.

Gonna be on all my future running lists for sure.

Love the attitude and swing of it.

I am gonna have to do a whole new fucking review in a few days. This song has grown enormously.

This is one of my favourites on the album

Its has sheer energy, killer drums, killer guitar work and Axl sings it with the kind of ferol passion that personified GN'R in the 80's.

Rons solo is the only bum note for me. I'm getting used to it, but I still dont like it. I dont care how technically difficult it is to play, but it sounds like shite.

Yeah I hated Ron's solo at first but now I find myself air guitaring to that motherfucking thing. It kicks ass now for sure.

Granted Rhiad is the one leak I never listened to a lot so I didn't get something else embedded in my brain.

I think this song could be my favorite on the album.

I purchased the CD today and decided that the best way to listen to it would be borrow my roomates Audi (I drive a toyota truck) with nice speakers (I have stock...) and go for a drive on PCH in Orange County.

While listening to it Riad came on.  The intro began, and when Axl and the drums kick in, I was absolutley blown away.  My face made an audible "Ohhh face".  The song rocked so hard I thought I was going to piss my pants!!!!!

Riad IMO could have been a track that kicked off the next album.  It has a "WTJ", and "CD" feel to it.  Just pops out of the speakers.

Very much an improvement from the live version.

Excellent song, really rocks out and musically meshes with what the lyrics are trying to convey, and I love the intro they added. Still getting used to the new solo, but the production really helped this song soar.

Yet another song about the old band (note the little clue in the song title).

Was watching this & the slightly eastern sounding orchestral part in the background sounded familiar. Listen from 3m12s-3m22s. Sounds very like the intro to Riad just before the delayed guitar riff comes in. Just wondering if GN'R actually created that piece or they sampled it from somewhere. Either that or they let Top Gear use the piece before the record was released. Might be nothing but sounds very like the bit in Riad.

The Riad intro seems to sample A Strangely Isolated Place by Ulrich Schnauss.

This other song "Letter from Home", at least before the percussion comes in, sounds like the start of the Riad intro too.

Riad n' the bedouins as a whole is so much better than what It sound like live from 2000-2002, I'm so impressed with this song.

Indeed. Maybe it's a typical sound and not intented but I don't think so.

Anyway, after hearing the 2001/02 live versions I was afraid that if this song was included in the album that would hurt the sales and the album overall.

In contrary, the song was extremely improved. From garbage, it became a strong rock song with great vocal content, guitar solos and attitude. I like the new solo and intro which it offers some blue devils. It's one of my favorites.

I don't think there's a track error although I was a bit confused in the beggining because of the previous demo.

It seems that this song is dedicated to the Oklahoma insident (I think there's an interview with Axl). I guess the lyrics are supposed to blame the terrorists, (although there's a theory about a C.I.A. conspiracy behind the attack and that's debatable).

By the way, does anyone have the feeling that the intro with the synth stuff and the electronic blinks is like describing the explosions of the building? Espcecially the part from 00.35 to 00.47 is like hearing the people in the building screaming (like the people that were heard screeming from the cell phones in the 9/11 attack)  and the last guitar strokes or riffs can resemble the collapse of the building. If correct it's a little creepy but genius.

what do you think riad and the bedoins is a reference to?

Bedouins are a tribal community, the term covers millions of people living in desert climates in Asia also people on the coast of certain parts of Africa are known as Bedouins. As far as Riad goes I dont know if theres a real history to that : ok:

Bedouins are a tribal community, the term covers millions of people living in desert climates in Asia also people on the coast of certain parts of Africa are known as Bedouins. As far as Riad goes I dont know if theres a real history to that : ok:

As per trusty Wikipedia...

Quote
Riyadh (Arabic: الرياض‎ ar-Riyāḍ) is the capital of Saudi Arabia and its largest city.

Haha, that's funny, I was thinking the same thing while listening to it a few minutes ago! I used to think Chinese Democracy would be the best opener (and I still think it would be a great opener), but Rhiad has even more of a Welcome To Jungle type rawness to it than CD! Anyway, both would be great as openers, but Rhiad is the song that has grown on me the most lately. I now officially love every single song on the album, and it feels great! ;D :smoking:

I think the song Chinese Democracy would be a better opener. Not only because its the first single but because its such a cool intro.

Look. Rhiad is fucking great. Sometimes I forget how much it kicks ass then like this morning, I was playing CD loud as fuck in my car, on my way to work, and this song kicked my in the face again. Great shit.

I haven't listened to CD as much as I would have liked to since it came out but on first listen, Riad was one of the standouts for me. It's nice to hear the proper studio version after hearing just audience bootlegs of it.

And I don't know about anyone else but I love the "ah ah ah ah" bits. ;D They just sound cool!

From first listen of this song on the album, I feel like there is a great sci-fi story behind it.  I want to write one if there isn't! :hihi:  I don't think I could capture it though.  "Somewhere in time where only I can tell" That line calls to me.

A little universe that someone accidently created.  The inhabitants are warring, but the creator has gone insane and doesn't care anymore.  The creator could fix the issue by looking through the time track, but doesn't want to, or is just tired of the whole damn thing. Their constant warring, lies, and crys for help just make the creator want to let the whole thing go.

I know it's not the ACTUAL meaning behind it, but that's the story I want to write about it ;D

I've like the "Immigrant Song" opening since Vegas 01/01/01..Thought it was vocally to fast live..Especially for an unfamilular song..Reminded me of Perfect Crime live prior to UYI release..GN'R opened w/ it and it was hard to follow because it was the 1st time I heard it...When they opened w/ it at Giants Stadium a couple of years later it was great because I was familular w/ it..I'm sure Rhiad will be the same..

I still can't get over how good this song is.
I really don't understand people who say they hated the live version but love the album version, though. I'm surprised by how how similar the album version sounds to the HBO bootleg. I also think it's pathetic how fans of only the old band bash this song just because it's performed by a new band, because Riad sounds like a 2008 version of Appetite For Destruction. Those same people would dig the hell out of it if it had other musicians playing the same parts.

Man o man....Anything Axl writes is always either attributed to the old Guns or Stephanie Seymour.  As if those 2 entities were the ONLY ones to cause emotional turmoil in his life.

Yes, it could be about the old Guns, but it could also be about something else.  From the recent things he's said, it also sounds like each song could have multiple inspirations or not be related to anything at all!

In any case, I get my own inspiration out if it and enjoy the hell out of the song ;D

ps, this is not a bash on anyone, just my personal opinion :)

Intially it reminded me of Zeppelins Immigrant song... and it still does in a way. The imagery used, sort of foreign, mid east sounding mideast vibe, sort of substitutes for the tales of Vikings and Valhala... and then of course the AHHHHHHHHahhhhh ah, you know what I mean.

Now that Ive listened to it more, its taken on a life of its on and I definately agree its a reference to the old band. Its not a favorite, but I like it. It adds musical diversity to the album.

Riad is my favorite song since I first heard Vegas bootleg before RIR 3 in 2001.  I still can't get enough with it, it fucking rocks so much. Ron's solo just added a whole new level of weirdness that I love in this song, from the tempo changes to Robin's lead following Axl's vocals in the chorus.

I didn't like the bootleg versions I heard from 2002, but I'd certainly be willing to give it another shot.  I like the studio version MUCH better.
Maybe because of the quality of the recording? I remember people saying how Riad were "techno" or "eletronica", when in fact its one of the most straight foward songs in the album - and it didn't change much since 2001.

Attention all hardcore gunners... If you want a fucking supersonic musical experience that will leave you in awe of the complexity of sound, put Chinese Democracy in your laptop (or stereo) and put on some really good headphones. I'm not talking about these fucking itunes plugs here, but real headphones. Then put on song number 9, turn the volume up and press play. I guarantee you that some four minutes later you will feel like you've really experienced something. Trust me. If you haven't done it yet, do it, if you've done it plenty of times like me, keep doing it. Riad on headphones is a true sonic experience. Just a friendly tip from a fellow gunner. Peace! 8)

I did it the first time I listened to CD. Actually, I bought a really good pair of headphones at the same store I bought my copy of Chinese Democracy.

When I saw the title of the thread I though someone discovered some sort of backmasking message hidden somewhere in the song where you could find phoebe buffay's cookie recipe.

Oh well.

The drum arrangement by Josh Freese and played by Brain is one of the best I've ever seen. Maybe the best on Guns N' Roses all time.

The riffing (courtesy of Tommy) is fucking bad ass too, specially in the first part of the song. Love how they used the same riff again, slightly different, in the second part of the solo (when Ron uses his fretless).

This is def the song to listen it as loud as possible.

I love the album and it's got even better legs than I thought. It was obvius from the get-go, that this album was pretty much timeless. In 10 years, 20 years, it will still sound as rich and vital as it does now, but I'm still blasting it every two to three days in the car or on our stereo and it's been four months since the release.

Of all the songs, maybe Riad and ITW didn't kick me on my behind as fast as all the rest of the songs did.

But lately I've really warmed to Riad. It's insane! Love it. Axl is vocally doing cartwheels and the DRUMMING is alien. The feel and snap of the drums is so crisp. The melody is fuu-yah!

Most of the new songs have taken a few times to settle down in a live setting, but the two (three?) times they've played Riad, they've pretty much nailed it. This holds excitement for the next tour!

I think they will play it on the upcoming trek for sure.

Tommy is mad about it too (and co-wrote it) it seems (his recent interveiw).

well what you said about IRS, I think that song is always better live, but in saying that, If Axl had the same vocals in the studio version of IRS as he did on Bach's song 'Stuck Inside', the song would be twice as good as what it is now, the only complaint with the studio version of IRS is the lack of 'fire' from Axls vocals,
but
Back on topic;

IMO, this is the song that sounds the most like "AFD on steroids".

Not bad, but not something I have a desire to listen to often.

Can't understand why this song isn't more well liked.  I guess maybe because of the choppiness?

It has a mean riff and bassline, great vocals, love the sonic bursts of sounds on the chorus and the chorus itself.  Ron's solo is a little crazy but in a good way

I used to feel that way.  I never really liked it from the live boots I heard.  But the demo made it worlds better for me, then the final product made it even better.  It's not among my most favorite GNR songs ever but considering where I ranked it before, it's lightyears ahead.

The song rocks!!!  That's for sure.

It is one of my favorite GNR songs ever. Since the Vegas bootleg, I love this song that much. To me, it does sounds like "AFD on steroids", but also it has the best groove of all the songs in the album. Thanks to Josh Freese and Brain for the awesome drumming and Tommy for writing such a mean riff.

Very well put. I can't wait to hear this song live again, I find myself going back to it over and over. It's one of those songs that challenge you so that you keep going back to it, and in the end becomes impossible to resist.8)
