Post by: Falcon on November 18, 2008, 12:43:22 PM
Thanks to billy Morrison for the following:

I am pleased to announce that Camp Freddy will be repeating our wildly successful Roxy Residency series and will do four shows during the month of December. The shows will again be at The Roxy on Sunset Blvd and we will again be promising four different sets and four completely different line ups. The shows will be every Tuesday during December - 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd. The shows in May were all sold out so I strongly urge you to buy your tickets in advance. They will be on sale at The Roxy and Ticketmaster this week. Our favorite rockers, Drive A will be opening the shows and we will let you know more details as we get them. I wanted to get this up here so that you guys stand the best chance of getting tickets. Here we go again!

CAMP FREDDY Holiday Madness - Nov. 18, 2008

CAMP FREDDY ? the Los Angeles-based "jam" group featuring Dave Navarro (ex-JANE'S ADDICTION, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS), Billy Morrison (ex-THE CULT bassist, current CIRCUS DIABLO vocalist), Matt Sorum (VELVET REVOLVER, ex-GUNS N' ROSES), Donovan Leitch (son of legendary folk singer Donovan), and Chris Chaney (JANE'S ADDICTION, ALANIS MORRISETTE) ? has issued the following update:

"CAMP FREDDY are pleased to announce that they will be repeating the success of their Roxy residency with another series of shows during December. The band will perform each Tuesday during the month [Dec. 2, Dec. 9, Dec. 16 and Dec. 23] at The Roxy Theater on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. Each week will be a different set list and different guests. Tickets are and will be on sale this week from The Roxy and Ticketmaster. All the May shows sold out so get your tickets in advance."

CAMP FREDDY recently parted ways with Los Angeles' acclaimed Indie 103.1 radio station, which has aired the band's weekly show every Saturday for nearly five years.

CAMP FREDDY is continuing work on what is expected to eventually be released as the band's debut album. Among the cuts that are set to appear on the effort are "20th Century Boy" (also featuring Steve Jones from THE SEX PISTOLS on lead guitar) and THIN LIZZY's "Jailbreak" (featuring ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell on vocals and Billy Duffy on lead guitar). Other guest musicians include RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith and singer Macy Gray.

Since its formation six years ago when they rocked the opening of The Standard Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles at the invitation of Brent Bolthouse, CAMP FREDDY has performed on both coasts of America and on national television shows ("The Tonight Show with Jay Leno", "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", "Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn", "Last Call with Carson Daly").

A bit more from www.billymorrison.net on the December Roxy Residency:

OK boys and girls. The tickets are now onsale through The Roxy and Ticketmaster, and at the wonderfully festive price of $20 too, so treat yerselves to some yuletide rock n roll. We are now crazy, of course, putting setlists together and reaching out to our friends. We intend to blow the roof off the place every week. More from Billy on 12/2 and a teaser for next week:

Well, the first Roxy show was a blast. So much fun playing with those guys. We added a few new tunes, some new faces to our family, and we'll be back with another show next Tuesday 9th. The full set list and guests will be up on the Camp Freddy site asap. Sue already has the MySpace/Facebook stuff updated. Lets hear a big cheer for Sue please. I have to say that if you don't have tickets yet for next week, get them now! And although we don't usually let on who the actual guests are for the shows, I would suggest that if you are in town next week, you should perhaps come down and check it out. Can't give you a better heads up than that!

And a review from the 12/2 show:

Camp Freddy @ The Roxy
A review of Camp Freddy posted by stymee007 on December 4, 2008 1:46 PM

When: Dec 2, 2008
Venue: The Roxy
Where: Los Angeles
Camp Freddy made their big return to the Roxy for the month long residency at the Roxy with another night of familiar faces and lots of rock n'roll excitement. This all-star ensamble of vocalist Donovan Leitch, guitarists Dave Navarro and Billy Morrison, bassist Chris Chaney and drummer Matt Sorum brought back the fun in rock n'roll, and gave the lively crowd lots to look forward to.

One of the things about a Camp Freddy show is the variety of people that show up to jam with the band. The crowd is always kept in anticipation over who will appear that evening, which is half of the excitement.

The night began with Queen's 'Tie Your Mother Down,' where Leitch started the show off with a familiar song that built up the energy for the evening. Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath was brought on stage to lead into Killing Joke's 'Eighties' and The Cult's 'Lil Devil,' where Billy Duffy joined the band on guitar. The opening songs set things off for the night, and there was rarely a dull moment the rest of the way.

Former Fuel vocalist Brett Scallions was next to sing 'Roadhuse Blues' and 'Mama Kin,' the two bluesier numbers of the evening. Then his wife and Slunt vocalist, Abby Gennet, was introduced to front a strong rendition of 'Whole Lotta Love,' which included her singing to Navarro, on her knees and doing her best Robert Plant impression. This became one of the many highlights of the evening.

Morrison took over lead vocals and brought out Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones to join in on 'Suffragette City.' He later returned to front 'I Wanna Be Your Dog.' Velvet Revolver's Duff McKagan came out for 'Holiday In The Sun,' and then Scallions returned to front 'It's So Easy.'

But the big name of the evening came when Godsmack frontman Sully Erna was brought out for the next three numbers - 'Good Times Bad Times', 'Max In The Box' and 'Bodies'. While most were familiar with him in his main band, he showed that he was able to place his own spin on these songs.

Much like past shows, tonight's Camp Freddy show showed no signs of having a dull moment. They are easily the missing link in rock music today, and hopefully will something every band will rediscover over time.

Thanks to Dave Navarro for the following recap of the 12/9 CF Roxy gig:

"Once again, we all had a great time last night at The Roxy for week two of the Camp Freddy residency. Our guests included Mark McGrath who did an unbelievable version of Public Image and an even better job on Sanctuary with The Cult's Billy Duffy. Who knew the guy could sing like that? Mark also killed it on Rebel Yell with Steve Stevens on guitar... Later we were joined by Slash and Chester Bennington for Whole Lotta Love and Paradise City, which were the ultimate finale. Chester also did an incredible version of Mountain Song with the core band. Of all the people who I have heard sing that song, Chester is second best, after Perry of course. Chester obviously respects the song and really does it justice in his delivery and clear intentions to stay true to the original version. He also tore up Ace of Spades. Other guests included Franky Perez, who amazed everyone with his incredible voice on Highway To Hell and Alright Now, Steve Jones, and The Darling Stilettos."

SLASH, CHESTER BENNINGTON, BILLY DUFFY Jam With CAMP FREDDY In Hollywood - Dec. 10, 2008

Slash (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES), Chester Bennington (LINKIN PARK) and Billy Duffy (THE CULT) are among the guest musicians who joined all-star cover band CAMP FREDDY last night (December 9) for its performance at the Roxy in West Hollywood, California. This was the second of the four-night Roxy residency for CAMP FREDDY, which features Billy Morrison (CIRCUS DIABLO, THE CULT), Dave Navarro (JANE'S ADDICTION, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS), Matt Sorum (GUNS N' ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER), Donovan Leitch (son of singer Donovan), and Chris Chaney (JANE'S ADDICTION).

Commented Navarro: "Once again, we all had a great time last night at The Roxy for week two of the CAMP FREDDY residency. Our guests included Mark McGrath who did an unbelievable version of 'Public Image' and an even better job on 'Sanctuary' with THE CULT's Billy Duffy. Who knew the guy could sing like that? Chester also did an incredible version of 'Mountain Song' with the core band. Of all the people who I have heard sing that song, Chester is second best, after Perry [Farrell], of course. Chester obviously respects the song and really does it justice in his delivery and clear intentions to stay true to the original version. He also tore up 'Ace of Spades'. Other guests included Franky Perez [SCARS ON BROADWAY], who amazed everyone with his incredible voice on 'Highway To Hell' and 'Alright Now', Steve Jones, and THE DARLING STILETTOS."

Live Review
Camp Freddy - The Roxy, West Hollywood

Wed, 10 Dec 2008

Camp in December

"Are you ready for a fucking mega rock show tonight?" Donovan Leitch asked the sold out crowd at the Roxy, on night two of Camp Freddy's December residency. The audience roared, and they were more than primed for a "mega rock show" courtesy of Camp Freddy?the Special Forces of cover bands. However, the evening's "V.I.P." guests were just as ready as the fans were. Perching over the balcony, Slash smiled as a cigarette dangled from his lips. Signature top hat on his head, he was ready to light up the Roxy like never before.

Though Slash waited till the end of the set for his turn to join the party on stage, his presence was definitely felt, as pockets of fans kept staring up towards the balcony at him. However, once the music began, all eyes were transfixed on the stage and the rock n' roll royalty holding court there. The party started with a raucous rendition of the Queen classic "Tie Your Mother Down." No matter how cold it is outside, Camp Freddy bring the heat?and Dave Navarro never needs to wear a shirt. Navarro anchored down the infectious riff with an unmatched gusto and grit, as Matt Sorum pounded out each rhythm with an unparalleled charisma. As Sorum flipped drumsticks, he showcased a true percussive panache that few drummers brandish. Meanwhile, Leitch carried the chorus to heights of pure rock n' roll ecstasy. Once Navarro ripped the first solo, it was on. It didn't stop from there either.

Van Halen's "You Really Got Me" gave Navarro the space to showcase his virtuosity, as he breathed new life into Eddie Van Halen's impenetrable fretwork. Even though some massively influential musicians shared the stage with Camp Freddy last night, a relative newcomer, Frankie Perez, made a lasting impression. The Scars On Broadway guitarist grabbed everyone's attention, during spot-on renditions of "Highway to Hell" and "Alright Now." He dashed across the stage with a strut that evoked Mick Jagger and a fire forged from pure heavy metal. He garnered massive applause as well, despite being the underdog of the evening. It was a ballsy and bombastic turn for Perez.

The Darling Stilettos traded off melodies on "Girls Got Rhythm," while Mark McGrath joined Steve Stevens for an epic "Rebel Yell." Afterwards, McGrath exclaimed, "I know who's backstage, and it's going to be the best fucking show we've ever done." The band backed that up, especially during a fiery display on David Bowie's "Suffragette City" that included The Cult's Billy Duffy, The Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Camp Freddy axeman Billy Morrison singing.

Next came a true clash of the titans. Bassist Chris Chaney began churning out the slow, ominous roll at the beginning of Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song," and suddenly Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington took to the stage. A torrent of energy spread through the building, and everything erupted. Watching Chester with Camp Freddy is like bridging the generational gap. Chester showcased a vocal prowess and style that matched the legends beside him. He can hold his own alongside former Guns N' Roses and Jane's Addiction members, fitting right in. In fact, his presence caused a surge, as he simply killed the song's chorus. At the same time, Navarro conjured Hendrix on the solo and unleashed his best lead of the evening. Their chemistry was palpable and infectious.

However, it got better. Slash stormed the stage during Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love." He oscillated between strange toggle switch schizophrenia and mind-blowing fretwork. Slash simply bled soul all over the stage, as he and Chester brought the show to rapturous heights. Sorum nailed the drum break, injecting it with a tribal flair.

As Slash tore through "Paradise City" with Chester singing, it was hard to believe Camp Freddy could top this. However, there's no doubt they will?probably next week.

Thanks to Billy Morrison for the following recap of the 12/9 CF Roxy gig:

"Finally, I am starting to feel a bit better. And I also don't have quite such a crazy schedule in front of me right now. Tuesday's Roxy show was completely off the hook. Slash and Chester Bennington closed the show with Whole Lotta Love and Paradise City, Chester totally blew everyone away with versions of Mountain Song and Ace Of Spades, Mark McGrath was amazing on She Sells Sanctuary and Public Image, and Franky Perez rocked ACDC and Free. Along with myself and Donovan singing a few, we all had a fantastic gig. It sounded tight and loud and the audience were loving it. Thanks to all who came down - two more to go and it just keeps getting better. A full list of songs and guests will be on the Camp Freddy site later today and pics and videos from the show will no doubt appear during the coming week. Camp Freddy: The Future of Rock & Roll?

Posted December 12, 2008

I have seen the future of rock & roll, and its name is Camp Freddy.

Compared to the past of rock & roll, the future of rock & roll is a little older, a bit more intimate, but still wildly and undeniably cool.

The other night I went to see Camp Freddy for the first time at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip. What exactly is Camp Freddy you ask, at least rhetorically? Well, I'd say that Camp Freddy is a true rock & roll rarity -- a super group that's actually super, a loose gathering of great players that truly tight. On their website -- www.campfreddy.net -- Camp Freddy describe themselves as "not a band" but "also way more than a jam session." More descriptively they are called an "Occasional Happening" and "a freak of Hollywood nature."

The happening freaks in question are -- at their core - guitarist Dave Navarro (Jane's Addiction), drummer Matt Sorum (The Cult, Guns 'N Roses/Velvet Revolver), Billy Morrison (The Cult), Chris Chaney (session great and tours with Alanis Morrisette and Jane's Addiction) with charismatic and charming frontman Donovan Leitch, son of another fine singer you should know who went simply by that first name. I hear that Scott Weiland was also part of Camp Freddy, but apparently he got caught with some contraband sweets in the camp bunk, and he was not around for the good clean fun the other night.

Based on Wednesday's show, Camp Freddy is an extremely welcoming place -- a packed crowd at the Roxy saw a constant stream of guests and fellow travelers take the stage including Slash, Steve Jones, Mark McGrath and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, among others, running through an intoxicating blend of classic rock and punk standards. A singer named Franky Perez sang the hell out of "Highway To Hell," Chester Bennington made "Mountains" by Jane's Addiction even more majestic and McGrath did a very credible "EMI" with Steve Jones sitting in. And Slash played "Paradise City" and seemed happy to be with a band that actually appeared to like one another.

At a time when everyone still alive in rock history in music is reuniting for profit if not for fun, it was a gas, gas, gas to experience some heartfelt rock for rock's sake.

Info on the one off private CF Chicago gig 12/6 in between their December Roxy Residency courtesy of www.campfreddy.net

This was an epic two and a half hour set by Camp Freddy. At a private party in Chicago, surrounded by snow drifts and christmas lights, the band played the longest set so far of their seven years, as people just kept shouting songs and the band kept playing.

SETLIST: Tie Your Mother Down, Just What I Needed, Should I Stay, Ziggy Stardust, Feel Like Makin Love, Pinball Wizard, You Really Got Me, People Are Strange, Brown Sugar, Suffragette City, White Wedding, 20th Century Boy, Roadhouse Blues, Lil Devil, Jailbreak, Cat Scratch Fever, Rock N Roll All Nite, Rebel Yell, Gimme Shelter, I Wanna Be Your Dog, Rain, and a bunch of other songs we have all forgotten!.

GUESTS: Steve Stevens, Billy Duffy, Mark McGrath, Brett Scallions.

"I'll update this post throughout the day - pics, video and the answers to all your questions - but I had to get on and tell you all how amazing last nights Roxy show was....Wes Scantlin, Billy Duffy, Brett Anderson, Steve Jones, Mark McGrath, Steve Stevens, Fred Durst and Billy Gibbons all came together and jammed with us. Everyone had a fantastic time and the energy was pretty crazy. It was a sold out show and we busted out some Halen, ZZ Top, Nirvana, Hendrix and a bunch of others. I am not going to tell you who's playing next week, but it's the last show at The Roxy next tuesday (and the last Freddy show of 2008) and if you are a fan of rock music, I STRONGLY advise you to buy a ticket now! I can't quite believe it myself, but I think next weeks show is gonna top it all off quite nicely!! Don't say you weren't warned."

OZZY OSBOURNE To Perform With CAMP FREDDY Tomorrow? - Dec. 22, 2008

According to drummer Matt Sorum (GUNS N' ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER), Ozzy Osbourne is among the guest musicians who will join the all-star cover band CAMP FREDDY tomorrow night (December 23) for the group's performance at the Roxy in West Hollywood, California. This will be the fourth and final show of the month-long Roxy residency for CAMP FREDDY, which features Billy Morrison (CIRCUS DIABLO, THE CULT), Dave Navarro (JANE'S ADDICTION, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS), Sorum, Donovan Leitch (son of singer

Thanks to Billy Morrison for the recap of last nights show:

OZZY AND FREDDY AT THE ROXY

"Tired. Drained. Beat. Mentally Exhausted. Emotionally Bankrupt. Spiritually Enlightened. These words describe how I feel after five hours sleep and one of the best Camp Freddy shows in the bands seven years. The noise that the audience made when we brought the one and only Mr Ozzy Osbourne out to the stage was deafening. And Crazy Train, Iron Man and Paranoid brought the house down. I don't care who you are - watching a true legend like Ozzy perform in a small club like that is a very special and very intense experience. Standing on the stage with him playing those iconic songs is beyond. Linda Perry, Steve Jones, Juliette Lewis, Naveen Andrews, Chris Vrenna, Mark McGrath and Royston Langdon were all part of the final show at The Roxy. And we closed the month long residency with Ozzy and huge smiles all around. The energy was electric, both from the completely sold out venue and the band onstage. Huge thank you's go out to all the musicians and performers that took part in the shows with us. I hope everyone who played, came out, watched and experienced these gigs had as good a time as we did. I would imagine that pictures and video will be flowing freely as usual and when I get it all, I'll put it up here. I want to wish everyone Happy Holidays and thank each and every one of you for the love and support. 2009, baby. More of the same coming your way soon"

Camp Freddy

Santa came early this year for rock fans attending Camp Freddy's fourth and final residency show at The Roxy. He brought some very special presents too. After a month of unforgettable rock n' roll shows, Camp Freddy did what they do best?surprise the hell out of everybody. Not only was Camp Freddy's final Roxy show the most star-studded of the four, it was also one of the most down and dirty displays of raw rock that the Sunset Strip has seen in decades.

That's right. Santa was very good to the fans. He brought them the "Prince of Darkness" himself, Ozzy "Fucking" Osbourne. Seeing Ozzy in such a small space is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Roxy's tiny walls illuminated how nefariously catchy Ozzy's voice remains after all these years. Of course, Ozzy's appearance provided the climax for the evening, and it had been hinted all over the net prior to the show. However, once Ozzy strutted across the stage, it was hard not to feel the chills. Yes, it was cold that night, but this was a different kind of chill. It's the chill of witnessing an icon transport an audience somewhere else. It's an irreplaceable feeling. It's something only Ozzy can do. Clad in black with shades over his eyes, Ozzy screamed, "I wanna see you go fucking crazy!" The packed house roared, and Dave Navarro ripped right into the classic intro for "Crazy Train." He imbued the song with a new swagger, scorching his fret board on the solo and bending the chorus into pure sonic ecstasy. Osbourne sounded pristine on stage, and he bounced around with an energy few frontmen could match. Matt Sorum bashed out the song's bombastic beat with a percussive panache and flair, while Chris Chaney kept the low end bolted down. The song went off the rails in the best way possible.

Immediately after "Crazy Train," Navarro began the satanically enchanting feedback swell at the beginning of "Iron Man." He conjured a six-string darkness, launching into a groove that sent Ozzy into full-on war mode. Ozzy carried the song's refrain, and the solo served as a battle cry. Finally, after Ozzy insisted on doing one more song, Camp Freddy ended the set with a super-charged "Paranoid." The crowd had received their best Christmas present, no doubt.

However, the rest of the show certainly didn't consist of lowly stocking stuffers. It was quite the opposite. Everyone was wishlist-worthy. Linda Perry may very well be the best candidate for a Led Zeppelin tour, if Robert Plant remains uninterested. She nailed the vocals on Zep-tastic renditions of "Rock and Roll" and "Whole Lotta Love." Navarro channeled Jimmy Page with reverence, while adding his own twists. Meanwhile, Sorum mastered the kit, doing the Bonham beat proud. Also, Lost's Naveen Andrews showed his rawk side on fantastic renditions of "Born to Lose" and "Holidays in the Sun." Mark McGrath rocked "Jailbreak" and "Hello There," and he also served as the night's MC. He made one remark that foreshadowed everything. "Merry Christmas, Camp Freddy heads! You've been very good this year, and you'll get the greatest fucking present ever tonight!"

There was more than just one great present though, and rounding out the all-star guest list was Juliette Lewis. She rocked firecracker versions of "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" and "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love," diving into the audience for some crowd surfing.

Ultimately, Camp Freddy's fourth December residency gig will go down in Sunset Strip history. How often do you get to see Ozzy Osbourne in a venue that small? Be good this coming year because Camp Freddy's taking note, and their presents definitely don't suck.

Billy Morrison doesn't confirm the show, from a post on his blog yesterday...

I also hope to be up at Sundance after that - either with Camp Freddy or DJing, although confirmations are still to be had. And as always, its not for sure until its over!

And this question is probably for Falcon.  They don't tell who the guests are in advance, but I would think, like in the case of Ozzy, you would want that out there for ticket sales (I would have to think that the last show sold out)?  Why don't they publicize the guests in advance?

Adding to what Paul mentioned above...

Publicizing the guests would take away from the "spontaneity" factor as well, they enjoy keeping things on a "you never know what may happen" level..

I guess I can see the appeal in keeping it on a "you never know what may happen" level, and there must be times when they don't really know too far in advance.  But it must be hard when they have certain guests...keeping that information to themselves.  Thanks
