Fuck yeah, count me in for the iTunes deal. Of course, I'll be in Holland and am getting a copy around the 21st, but hell, I'll throw down for a digital copy, especially if there's a digital booklet or something and its iTunes plus. Getting the single will kick ass, really get the ball rolling.

They are really pushing the pre-order option, I wonder why? I wish they would 'pre-ship' the pre-order, so you could get it delivered at home Saturday.  I have to hold off since I don't know what city/BB I will be in that day, and I MUST have it 11/23...bummer for me.  :crying:

do any of you know what format / bitrate will the single have?

why is that?

I've got a question.  I don't have an I-Pod, never used iTunes, never bought music on the internet.  So what would be my best bet here?  Do you need an I-Pod to play songs off of iTunes?  If it's available at napster, would that be the better way to go?  My computer is quite old, I don't think it would know what to do with an iTune.

If you got the Itunes "programe" you can download/buy songs to your comeputer. You can still burn it out on a cd, put it on most mp3player (i belive) and listen to it on your PC..

Are they giving the song the for free to everyone or just those who pre order?  And if its just for pre order, will they ask for an order # ?

Well I had pre-ordered back in October... I think I paid $14.99... now it's on sale of $11.99... not that $3 is a big deal, but I hope I at least get the single.

tangent: I've determined that Axl Rose is the last rock star... I can't think of anyone since him that evokes the sense of danger, excitement, & rock & roll edge that he does.
This occurred to me after reading what James Hetfield said about Lars following around Axl hoping some of that rock star-ness rubs off on him... even other huge musicians look to him as an iconic rock star.

I would like GNR to give a WAV/FLAC version of the single, like NIN or Bumblefoot did.

And I wouldn't really say AAC is way better than mp3. Quality basically depends on the compression ratio of the original file, not the file type.

I'm quite new to itunes so maybe i'm missing something but why would you buy it on itunes? don't people want the actual CD in their hand. I'd be buying the CD and then just putting it onto itunes.

Depends how patient you are a guess. The fact its already being streamed everywhere and played on the radio means I can hold out until the release of the album. But you'd have thought with all of the material thats been recorded over the past few years a b-side or remix could have been thrown in

But like I said before I prefer to pick up the copy from the store on the day anyway

I hear what you're saying.  I don't know for sure because I don't use iTunes, but don't they give you extras when you download a single?  Like, artwork, liner notes, etc.  It'd be a little more than just the song itself, at least I think.  Also, you can still get the album in the store on the day of its release if you pre-order and choose "in store pickup".  At least, so I've heard.

One can only hope, depends on the record company. All the other GN'R albums are NOT iTunes Plus.

ok, thanx, then it's the austrian store. but i got it now. sounds a little different than the stream-version on the homepage: the sleazy guitar on the left side after the axl scream, now fits the song better. don't know if it's a different mix/mastering or just some compression issue (different file type etc)... whatever, very cool.

Me too, and pre-ordered the album on iTunes.  I almost couldn't believe it was real.  I think I will download the whole thing immediately at midnight on the 23rd and then go into Best Buy in the morning to pick up the CD to get the booklet, etc. 

I just bought the single on iTunes... awesome to see the full tracklisting on there.

It seems to be popping up in iTunes stores all over the world now.  8)

New Zealand got the single as well.


Of the countries that we don't know the release date for, the Spanish iTunes Store lists the expected release date to be the 22nd.

I just bought it on ITunes (YYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!)  It sounds exactly like it does on the Gunsnroses.com page.

This is maybe a dumb question, but does buying albums on places like Itunes count towards billboard charts, etc???  This is how I usually buy my songs/albums but i want to do my part to making it a Billboard/chart success. Thanks in advance.  :)

It's very cool that it's doing well... but I still don't understand this "it's only the first day" thing... I mean, of course people will download it more than a song that's already been out for a few weeks?  It's the same as the album charts, generally you expect an album to sell a lot in the first week and then drop off.

Anyways, I hope there are enough downloads to make it crack the Hot 100 chart next week.

That's a good point but I'm not sure how iTunes calculates their buy charts.  Obviously it's updated continuously since CD kept climbing throughout the day, but I'm not sure if the chart rankings are based on weekly totals or daily sales or what.  But it looked like most of the songs on the general top 100 and rock top 10 were ones that had been out for a while

Yeah, I'm not sure how they calculate it either... but I've noticed since they started counting digital sales on Billboard that when mainstream artists release a new single it usually debuts really high on the charts and then either drops off quickly or hangs in the same area depending on how much people like the song.

I saw the big Itunes write up on the australian itunes but then u did to separate searches for chinese demoracy and it didnt even bring up the CD or new song..Hopefully soon they will sort it out..At least its there.. : ok:

Hmm, I think that you are still charged 99 cents in the US for downloading the track.  I don't think it's truly "free".  I think what happens is that you buy the title track now with the pre-order, and then you get the rest of the album at a reduced cost when it is released using their "complete my album" function.

I pre-ordered the album off iTunes on Sunday and was charged $ 0.99 for the single and will be charged the remaining $9.00 once the album is downloaded by me on the 23rd.

Anyone know if the same applies if you get the single from Napster?  I would imagine so.  I tried to install iTunes on my cpu yesterday, but didn't have much success, so I'm thinking of giving Napster a try.

Yeah I just got my promitional download from Napster by pre-ordering from Best Buy.  Worked beautifully.  I'd fully recommend if you don't have/use iTunes.  First official "legal" music download I've purchased in YEARS.  And man does it feel good!

yes, thats right. this download stuff is not the right format in terms of my quality interests of an official collector's items, thats why i've just asked if there is any single cd release (to come). i do buy every physical official cd single and albums from bands i like but never will agree on buying inferior quality mp3 stuff in 2008 when the cd standard allready is from the beginning of the 80s. and this song is not "just another song released somehow" like Shackler was, this is the first official released single of this kind of album which also is the title track and also under the still huge GN'R banner, so its not too questionable that some people would have expected a simple single-cd too.....well, radio got promotional cds aswell, huh? however it right now appears they decided to go the download-way only. whatever the reasons are for that, some fans will have to wait for the cd/lp for adding some physical release to their collections. yeah, blame on those fans who surely have a bigger official physical collection than you, Jarmo!

I'm not really a collector. More of a music fan and listener.

So when a new song is available for purchase. I buy it if it's from a band I love and support.


I know that I will be able to hear it in all its high fidelity glory in a few weeks. I pre-ordered the vinyls (aren't you proud of me?) in addition to the CDs.

But until then, the iTunes digital single will do just fine and by making that purchase, I'm also supporting my favorite band. Which is becoming more and more important these days when sales are declining.


This is just a reflection from somebody who's seen more than one "release the album" or "release a new song" post over the years. So it's kinda ironic to see fans opting not to buy the song once it's available.

I can understand the quality concerns.

I wouldn't mind having the CD single either. Hell, if one is made available I'll buy it too.



But considering there's a new official GN'R single available for all of us to buy, it's pretty fucking exciting if you ask me. The format of the single comes in second hand.

everyone has a point here. in the end its up to the fans to choose what they will support and what not. and there are people who dont blindly follow all the actions of their fave bands, and f.e. every fan community has people who simply are against these inferior quality downloads on itunes and would support the physical releases (mostly) only. the main problem in here is that the industry hasnt upgraded their "download system"......offer little more expensive quality FLACs for example (as Metallica did with their live shows, aswell next to cheaper mp3 releases) and i'd be all over it. but after all the waiting its not too hard to wait 2 more weeks, then people could buy the album and make even superior quality mp3s and all - if they'd need to.
again i find it some hard to believe there have been printed many radio promo cds but no cd singles -and i'm hell sure they had TIME to do that properly- but only download singles to be released from the first single of the title track of one of the most talked/speculated/delayed/.... albums ever.

I thought the majority of the stations didn't get promotional singles but that it was done digitally?




In addition, regarding the "blind following", I'm guessing artists tend to play concerts in markets where they have fans?

So, and I'm just guessing here, since iTunes is a big music retailer I'm assuming those sales do count as well.

If nobody buys the music in your market because you're waiting for a better format, who knows what will happen eventually.


I know you will buy the album, I'm not talking about that. I'm just talking about the general idea of not buying.

I know for a fact that there are artists who only release material digitally. Either iTunes only EPs or full albums that you can only get online.

And if people boycott that, there's no sales to talk about.

well, the radio promo cds are on ebay and supposely for real. if most radio stations get the cd single online but a few got them as physical release....well, lets get "some" fans a physical cd single aswell  :)

i see the point with supporting, no doubt. and as big as itunes is today and how compatible and spreaded all the mp3 stuff might be and having to accept there is no physical cd single release, i absolutely dont get it why not offering at least cd quality too? its not an upload/download/internet connection problem worldwide anymore like it was 10 years ago or so! i simply dont accept to buy inferior quality (and that "only" compared to cd standard which allready is from beginning of the 80s!!) online in 2008, exspecially when the same song version(s) are out on an higher quality and physical cd/vinyl release ~2 weeks later. but if industry only offers the itunes/mp3 stuff and no higher quality....then -as big as a support for my fave bands is- i dont like to jump for them. in this case my band support will "only" be on the album releases not this cd single.

its as easy as that: if to order online let the buyers choose what to get, like:

Mp3 is the most widely used digital audio format. I guess it's the standard.

Kinda like VHS was the standard even though other formats existed.


I'm sure you can come up with more reasons why it's popular among music listeners (and record companies).



Anyway, as a I said. This is a one track single. Digital release makes sense.

We'll get the physical album in less than two weeks.... Until then, this will do. At least for me.

I'm just excited to be able to buy a new track and listen to it!  8)

there is still a huge market for an physical album at least. single cds might not make much money anymore, still would have been nice to get one from cd and such a big band name. about the itunes DRM....not totally sure but didnt the major labels drop that because the customers didnt like supporting that?
if its the only-download-way to go: why not offering mp3 + flac for different prices? easy to do/nothing to loose!

CD is now #1 on the U.S. Rock chart for iTunes. It is #17 on their overall music chart.

So in addition to being the #1 Rock Song in the USA, it's also been or still is the #1 Rock song in Canada, Finland, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

I'm sorry for stating the obvious here, but I really, really don't see a problem. In fact, it's mind-boggling that you do. After 17 years without new material, you are now about to get a full album of it in 11 days. That is "physical" material of the single, with 13 other songs to go along with it. How the hell is that a problem? I don't even use iTunes, but the thought of not having the single physically in my hand, when I'm about to get my hands on a whole album of material, seriously hasn't struck me even once. Especially when I can listen to the new single on the official website in the meantime.

some collectors would have liked to support the gnr camp in buying the physical cd single only and also before the album release - but the industry doesnt offer that one or some kind of uncompressed quality audio for download. so its just waiting ~2more weeks, yep.

I am an audophile of sorts myself, and think it is sad that with the advancement in technology we've actually taken a huge step back in sound quality as a result of MP3's and the  "loudness war".   I understand your frustions, but having CD on itunes is a good thing for the band and a good thing for the fans and consumers, regardless of the formats available.  I think there is growing market  for flac and other high fidelity formats which wil result in more choices in the future, but for now itunes and mp3 are the standard.  Like Jarmo said, I can't wait to listen to CD in all its high fi glory...bring on vinyl!!!

I know that hit singles by Kanye & Britney sold 200,000 + in the first week and they soared up the charts... I'm not expecting that much, but I'm a little curious.

Its no.20 in Ireland on iTunes. Can't believe Beyoncee is no.1 The words in her song are ridiculous. I hope Axl gives the music world a good shake up

it seems that "Trendsingles" (at least in Germany) do always have some standard layout with the logo from the record label (or smth. similar) on it and that those singles are produced from upcoming album releases which have bigger expections salewise - but not singlewise.....its also an alternative for the download option, something i'd voted for. its simple, not cheap but still physical  :)
i am not aware how easily those are available im general or specially this one. the german fans had a hard time to get it though.

Well, even though I'm not able to have the fucking legal mp3 (because my local iTunes doesn't have it) or the physical CD-single (because it doesnt exist), I would like to say some things about this subject:

* I would love to be able to download a legal lossless version of the track. I cant understand why a major band like GNR cant provide, at least, the FLAC option next to the mp3. I also will never understand how can music industry show such a drastic regression, from offering lossless version as THE ONLY OPTION, to offering lossy, super-compressed formats like MP3 as the standard. Damn! You can play WAV files in every single iPod, MP3 player, standalone DVD players, personal computers... everything! You can also play WMA Lossless files in these players, which can be digitally protected using a license!

* But offering as the ONLY possibility a lossy version of the track is not a good reason for me not to buy it. I really want to feel a part of this, supporting the band. But... I really cant download the track because I live in southamerica! How can be countries like Argentina, Brazil or Chile unable to get the single, with all the massive amounts of fanatics they have!

I feel a little frustrated with all this subject. Maybe my problem is not related to GNR, but with capitalism itself. I dont even have a confirmed release date for my country, being 10 days away from 23/11!

I am the kind of guy who would have bought EVERYTHING the band had offered. And I think there is a very big number of people in my same conditions.

Anyway, this doesnt modifies my enthusiasm and my excitement at all, and I'm very happy, nervous, and proud (all at the same time) for being 10 days away from the album I've waited half of my life.

Apple also has a lossless compression codec that could be used for iTunes downloads. They just choose not to bother with it.

Chinese Democracy has currently slipped to 14th over all in the USA ITUNES.  It is still the #1 rock song on USA ITUNES.

What really will be cool to see is how well the actual record sells when it comes out. What do you guys expect, in today's hostile music environment? Can GN'R still reach the top of the charts? I say hell yeah!

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but it seems You can buy high quality drm free mp3 version of single and later album. 320 should be ok quality. Can not get more details from the iPhone at the moment. 7digital.com :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm chuffed to bits just to finally get the album - but I like supporting singles but it's pretty pointless if they have no b-sides.
