Q&A - James Hetfield

Have you listened to the leaked tracks from "Chinese Democracy"?

I haven't.  I'm sure Lars has heard it - he's a big-time Axl follower [laughs].  He's followed him around and annoyed him, trying to capture some of the rock-star-ness. We played a festival with them in Germany in 2006 - not on the exact same day - and we went down and watched them.  The guy's a good frontman.  There's a lot of extra stuff that goes along with that, but he is talented.

Lars was kind of a punk.  After the set he came out with the band took a bow and then threw his cup of beer in the crowd so it got all over them.  It was a real classy move.

Lars has been a huge Axl fan forever. He talks a lot about it in interviews sometimes. He was on some VH1 rock countdown one time and went on and on about How Axl is like the greatest rock star to ever live.

That was actually my third show that year in three different cities:  NYC at Hammerstien, SF at the Warfield, and Oakland at Oracle Arena.

I was actually texting updates that night from the show.  I remember thinking, I better make sure that people know I wasn't seeing things, that Axl introduced Lars before the song started.  After the song, Lars jumped off the drum riser and gave Axl a hug.  I thought that was cool to see given what happened back in '92.

Fernando is easily confused.  ;)

I think he means he saw GN'R for the first time in Oakland.

Not necessarily the 2006 Oakland show.

I saw him at some European shows that summer. Either it was him or there's a clone out there.... Two Fernandos.  :nervous:

I would have to assume he means that this was his first GnR show:

09.24.92 - Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, CA
opening act: Body Count
set: Welcome To The Jungle, Mr. Brownstone, Live And Let Die, Attitude, Bad Obsession, It's So Easy, Double Talkin' Jive, Civil War, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds / Wild Horses [Intro] / Patience, Drum Solo, You Could Be Mine, Guitar Solo, Godfather Theme, It's Alright [Intro] / November Rain, The One [Intro] / Sweet Child O' Mine, Only Women Bleed [Intro] / Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Don't Cry, Mother [Intro] / Paradise City
audio/video recording?: video
notes: Someone throws a bullet onstage during 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door,' prompting Axl to ask the crowd who it is for.

You're kind of right. But I was referring to the really old days, like 70's and 80's. Back in the 80's Guns played with Maiden, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Tom Petty. We had the sadly canceled David Lee Roth tour. Not to mention guests on GNR concerts, like Jeff Beck, Aerosmith again, Lenny Kravitz and sir Elton John.  :peace:

Singer/guitarist James Hetfield checked in from the band?s tour...

Q: You guys have an uneasy history with Guns n? Roses. Have you heard Axl Rose?s new record? Do you even care?

A: I?ll certainly listen to it. But I haven?t lost sleep waiting for it. I thought we took a long time to make an album. But you know he?s late for everything so it makes total sense. We saw him play at a festival in Germany two years ago. He?s a good frontman. He?s eccentric, but all artists are. If they don?t show that they?re quirky, they?re lying to you. They?re either pretending they?re not or they?re pretending they?re an artist.

That's high praise from Hetfield. I think it gives you a sense how good this album is when rivals inclined to really want to bash the thing... decide they better not (for fear of looking stupid).

All of which opens up the following questions: (1) What would Kurt Cobain have thought of this album? (2) What does Vince Neil think? (3) What does Jon Bon Jovi think? (4) What does Trent Reznor think? (5) What does Dave Grohl think? (6) What does Scott Weiland think? (7) What does Eddie Vedder think (not a rival necessarily- but a contemporary of Axl's)? A penny for their thoughts. :hihi:

I think there was more to that than just that one evening. I think James was always a little pissed that Axl and GN'R got so much attention and that his drummer practically had a man-crush on Axl since '87. Metallica's a great band- but I've always thought that a lot of what they have done since '92 has been an attempt to achieve the Use Your Illusion level of fame and influence of GN'R. More commercially accessible music. Check. "Double" (of sorts) album. Check. Attempts at artistic "deep" music videos. Check. Music with orchestra. Check. Controversy with fans (Napster). Check. Line-up changes. Check. Intra-band strife for all to see (Some Kind of Monster). Check. HAHAHA... I don't know. Maybe I'm reachin' there. Just a theory I've had. :hihi:

You gotta be kidding me right?
Metallica have no need to copy GN'R at all, they are highly successful in their own right, and comparisons you are making is simply clutching at straws.
As for lineup changes, there are 3 core members (James, Lars, Kirk) that have been there from the start, other than that, they've had 3 bass players in 25 years, one of which died.

I think it's great that James makes some nice sentiments about Axl here, but people still fucking turn it around into something negative.
