We should try to limit this thread to just the promotion and not fill it with comment posts.  IT will make it easier to view long term.

Just now I watched George Strait - The Seashores of Old Mexico on Youtube, which belongs to the Universal Music Group (must be the record company).  There is a section to the right which will list videos that also belong to the Universal Music Group, and the first 4 listed are GNR videos.  I figured it was worth mentioning this observation under the Promotion thread, because I find it highly unlikely GNR would be matched with an old country song prior to the GNR Promotion campaign we've been seeing.  Its definitely a more subliminal form of promotion.

I just walked down Bay Street in Toronto near the ACC and they have Chinese Democracy posters all over the place, I doubt I'll get around to taking a picture for you guys, but it was cool to see!  Anyone going to a Leafs or Raptors game should look around!

The posters are similar to the ones posted by "eggers" on the previous page, but bigger... They also have "Available Everywhere" written in big letters, I'm not sure if there was any confusion over the Best Buy deal, but it's definitely not in effect in Canada.. at the bottom they have logos for all the stores that will be carrying it:  Costco, Amazon.ca, Chapters/Indigo, Best Buy, Sunrise Records, etc., etc.... There is also an Apple logo ("Available on iTunes").

Anyone noticed that if you buy the vinyl version of CD in the UK, via HMV, you get a limited edition exclusive 7" single. I'm tempted but would like a digital download for free like in the US too.

I was at the ac/dc concert last night in toronto and when we got back to our car there was a ad stuck to the windsheild for guns n roses chinese democracy.that ad had to be on everyones window there had to be like thousands of them everywhere it was kind of cool.

I've been refreshing a 100 times and no guns?

I think that it's been taking down now  :no: . I was on the site at around 8am UK time. It was a flash banner at the top of the page. Featured a pause/play of chinese democracy and very high res artwork of the 'blood people' from the star artwork. Also there was artwork displayed similar to the booklet that was leaked. The chinese president was also displayed with soldiers (excuse my ignorance it may be some other political figure).

Just to add to this:

There is a LOT of speculation that the Best Buy Black Friday ad is either a hoax, a fake from the company, or "something else".  CD is actually one of the bits of proof they're offering up (the price is the same as the release date price...certainly no "Deal"..but is listed as a  "doorbuster").    Ditto on some of the pricing in the flyer, as well as the prominent feature of Kung Fu Panda (which was prominently featured in THIS weeks ad...which is suspicious considering movies like Hancock and Wall-E both release closer to Black Friday).  Suffice to say, it wouldn't surprise me to find out it's a fake...or that it's legit.

All of which probably matters not a whit to most of you.....but suffice to say it may or may not be an ACTUAL advertisment.   :)

Yeah I saw that this weekend.  I was checking out the magazine in Borders and opened right up to the full page ad.  There was one of those tear away pieces of POP attached that led me to open right to that page.  Not sure if it was on purpose, but it worked.  Upon further review, it may not have been attached to the page, but it was in there, like a bookmark.

T minus 4 days and counting...  i bet that around day 3, we'll really start to see the monumental campaign kick into high gear!  the epic video for better will push the single to the top of the rock charts.  chinese democracy (the song) will ride it's coat-tails.  gnr will have two big singles and a number one album.

Just seen a CD advert on tv here in the UK. Its was on at half time of a football game between England & Germany (ENGLAND WON!). Anyway, the advert started with the old logo and SCOM playing, then the screen flickered and it said "Transmission interupted" then the screen had the years from like maybe 1991 to 2008 scrolling and in the fore ground, there was images of whats been going on, then they started playing CD and, the voice over was going on about the most antisipated album of all time........ OUT MONDAY!

Thus far, Best Buy has run a relatively restrained marketing campaign for ?Chinese Democracy.? Just a few days before its release, there were no signs announcing the album inside the West Hollywood location (there was a sign outside the store). The album is now up for streaming on MySpace, but not playing into the hype was the design, says Arnold.

?It all starts this weekend,? Arnold says. ?We?re trying to time everything for the grand release this Sunday. There wasn?t a giant buildup, in terms of over-promising. We wanted the music to stand on its own.?

that would make this moment even sweeter.  i'd love to have a good pic of the band that i could have on my computer or better yet as a giant framed poster on my wall.  gnr has tons and tons of merch for sale, but man all i really want now is a picture of the band.  not a collage, but like all together in one room. 

not to invoke the old band because i like the new members so much better, but one thing those old guys did well was to pose for band photos.  now, years later i still have pics of that band.  what happens when we're celebrating the 20th anniversary of chinese democracy?  if we want to see teh band, we will have to look at the little individual photoshopped pictures in the booklet.  BUT I WANT A POSTER!  hell yes i do.

I'm sure it wouldn't be to difficult for them to accomplish, and for promotional puropses, I guess we'll see some new pictures in the near future.

Right now, I'm crossing my fingers for a music video, that would be sweet!

Seems a bt late in the promotional cycle to premiere a music video. But then again, G n'R seem to have a habit of leaving things late.  :o

It looks like promotion is really picking up now. Perhaps Universal/Geffen are saving most of the promotion for soon after the album is reeased - i.e after all the diehards like us have gone out and bought our 10 copies each, and at the point more casual music fans have to be persuaded to go out and buy it.

Just a thought.

Just heard Chinese Democracy on the Grey Cup.... there was also a mention of the album in a Future Shop commercial (it had an older versoin of the artwork actually!)

Nice opportunity

It was a good opportunity to advertise the album cause there almost no promotion at all at the record stores... No posters, no special stands, no nothing.

Universal doesn't have any t-shirts like in other countries and they'll send me like 5-10 promo cd's after countless phone calls and after they saw that I'll have a half page ad for the album and the fan club on the next 3 issues of the Greek Metal Hammer...

Today In Spain, I saw a GNR Promo for Chinese Democracy, during the program "Padre de Familia" ("Family Guy" in English). The Spot promote this TV serial, and you can see it at the begining and at the end.

Yeah no kidding. I've read--and expected--that Universal was launching the whole monumental campaign thing. It really doesn't seem like it followed through unfortunately. They began promoting the thing only a month before it came out. That's not very good. Slipknot's new album was #1 on release, and they were promoting it with their first single 3 months before it came out.

I was listening to kerrang radio this morning in the car on the way to college.

At about 11ish a show came on in which they announced the new album is released in the UK today. And wanted people to text in if they thought it was good or not to the show so the presenter could read out opinions.

Later on they would also be having a "old guns n roses vs new guns n roses" in which i assume they play two old guns tracks, and CD and better from the new album.

Sadly i arrived at college long before this. so i cant report on what the texts reactions to the album were!

i saw a new commercial last night on VH1 Classic. it was around 11:30 and i was watching an Iron Maiden performance from Rock n Rio 2002.

i wasn't really paying attention to the comercials, but all of a sudden i see the giant red star and i think it was CD playing in the background. then there was a voice over that said something like "gnr...cd...featuring the hit song CD....and Better." and they played a few seconds of each song. then the voice said "available now at Best Buy."

anyone else see this one? i did a quick search on youtube but didn't see it.

at least you managed to get something....in SA, there is still no radio airplay for either of the two singles...(an independent rock station occasionally plays CD)....the album is still not in stores...(wont be for another week apparently)...and a certain Universal rep said that they would recommend to stores that they only order a few copies as they don't expect this "thing" to do anything major in terms of sales....

fukn frustrating....not to mention that we don't have any T-shirts, posters, or TV ads...and Best Buy don't ship outside the states...crap....

I want to see GNR on tv/youtube/myspace peforming songs from the record to really shove this album in peoples faces.

Aside of putting on the premiere listening party with Universal on the 20th i've had 3 radio interviews between Thursday and Monday for the album.
2 for BBC and one for Manchester Rock radio. Also one for BBC tv at the album premiere.
All of the interviews i pretty much praised Chinese Democracy or stayed neutral when they started comparing it to classis GNR saying "look its something new i think its gonna work lets go with it. Original GNR was superb but lets not condem this new album cos we've not got anything else right now theres some great stuff on there and until a reunion lets be happy with it all."
Pretty much every presenter open minded to what i was saying.

However the prick from BBC Radio 5 Live yesterday was totally trying to condem the album and trying to get me on board and say its nothing without Slash. Which i didn't do i pretty much said its something new give it a chance. He did try and make me look stupid for not agreeing with him but made himself look more of a dick when he cracked a joke that no one got the punch line of about Guns 2 Roses having a "Slash" on stage as in he mean't taking a piss on stage. He ended up laughing to his own joke even his broadcast partner looks puzzled with a "wtf" look on her face.

My roommate saw the commercial twice yesterday, on Fuse and on VH1.  I witnessed the one on VH1, which was the same as you're describing.  I thought it was the same that was put up on their myspace page last week, could be wrong though.

Saw a sign for Chi Dem on the back of a bus today in LA.  Aside from the billboard on the Roxy, this is all Ive seen.  I drive through hollywood everyday seeing all the album ads posted on all the walls, but no GnR...

There are signs all over Sunset Blvd, even on the side facade of the Whisky, and I saw a CD poster on Pico Blvd last Sunday.

Howard Stern read a live commercial for Chinese Democracy at the conclusion of The Howard Stern show today.  He does live commercials throughout the show, and really talks up the products well.  Plus he gets millions of listeners on a daily basis.  I'm not sure if the commercial was a one shot deal or if it'll continue to run.  Hopefully it'll continue, it sounded pretty official he read some quotes from Rolling Stone and called it the most anticipated album ever.

They also played clips of 5 songs off the album earlier in the show, the response was positive except for Robin Quivers.  She didn't like the 20 seconds of "Better" and "Prostitute" that she heard.  She did agree during the live commercial though that they didn't really give the album a full listen to be able to form a valid opinion.  A caller also called in to discuss Buckethead's solo during TWAT and they played that.  Again Howard said it was good, Robin was less impressed.  Some quality overall GNR conversation on the show today though.  It was exciting to hear.

I just recieved a promo Multi media message from Optus about Chinese Democracy. It says if I buy the new single I will recieve a free ring tone and it also had a Video of the The new GN'R logo then the name of the album then the album cover.

I think its just ridiculous that this album was worked on so hard and so long to have the release handled so poorly.


I almost feel like Axl is boycotting the album.

I'm feelin' ya, bro. So many people put their efforts into this album for years and years, and there's been so much anticipation for it, and when the time comes to put it out, they essentially drop it off into a ditch, hoping someone will stumble upon it, by chance. I could see doing that if the album wasn't good, but quality isn't the issue. I don't really know what is the issue, though. It's been so mishandled. It's a shame, everything was there for them to hit it out of the park, and it seems they were simply content with getting a base hit... :(

Time will treat this album well.

The promo is not what we all thought/wanted it to be but Axl will eventually speak. The band will eventually release videos, and most importantly, the ALBUM will sell well for years to come.

I agree with this. Axl achieved the most important thing... namely an album that ARTISTICALLY (if not commercially) stands up to the name stamped on the front. It can slot in comfortably behind the Illusions and TSI? in anyone's GN'R cd library without looking out of place. I also believe that a growing audience will come to appreciate it through the years.

What is a pity is that it seems that we may not get to re-experience the whole "Guns N' Roses" hysteria again like we did in 91-93. Not at THAT LEVEL anyway. Few bands ever get to experience that though- so Guns was fortunate to achieve it once already. Who knows- perhaps that's actually a good thing for Axl and for the band- as those years didn't seem to be particularly easy for them- notwithstanding the success and attention.

At the end of the day though- Chinese Democracy is a rock music master piece- and that's what matters. Hopefully sometime soon people start to place a premium on quality when making their listening choices. :peace:

I just saw the Kid Rock Storytellers the other day, and I was thinkin that if GN'R did this just for the songs on Chinese it would be a great way to get the word out about the record. It would be die hard fans in the audience and it would just be an easy way for Axl to say where these songs came about, without having to actually do an interview. Plus, it would just be an all around great way to showcase this amazing music.
